Shyamchi Aai, an autobiographical novel written 76 years ago by social reformer Sane Guruji occupies pride of place in Marathi literature.
The novel explores Sane Guruji’s relationship with his mother as a boy and is the ultimate tribute to motherhood.
While Acharya Atre made the 1953 film Shyamchi Aai based on the novel, Mahesh Manjrekar is making another film based on it, with Madhuri Dixit being considered for the lead. Madhuri, we hear, is rather kicked about the role in what will be her first Marathi film.
Said Manjrekar passionately, “Shyamchi Aai is equivalent in Marathi literature to Pearl S Buck’s The Good Earth. I’ve longed to make a film based on it for very long. I can’t see anyone but Madhuri in that role.”
Although the director was quick to add there are some “practical problems” before Dixit takes it on. Why do we feel these ‘problems’ could have something to do with the actress’ insistence on a steep remuneration.
