Shentimental Marathi Movie Review :

Defining commercial entertainment isn’t easy. There shouldn’t be a specific ‘formula’ to it. But if we observe the films that are highly successful in India, have something in common. It’s the emotional connect! It need not be an out & out tragedy where the audiences keep shedding tears, but few basic ‘touchy’ instances that do the trick, provided the other aspects are taken care of! In case of Sameer Patil’s ‘Shentimental’ the other aspects include unforced humour, & a new approach towards the world of police!

Shentimental Marathi Movie Ashok SarafSameer Patil succeeds at the most basic stage of this film, the writing! A smoothly crafted three act structure, where the actual aim was not to give us a crime investigation film, but to investigate the human side of both the police & the criminal. Just as the title suggests, this film is sentimental about both parties. Ashok Saraf’s ‘Prahladrao’ a constable, is definitely the heart of the story, but all other characters are equally important. Upendra Limaye’s ‘Dilip Thakur’, Vikas Patil’s MPSC pass out ‘Subhash Jadhav’ & newcomer Suyog Gorhye’s ‘Manoj Pandey’ (the thief) all of them & ‘Prahladrao’ are equally important in the chain of events that take place. In addition to that Raghubir Yadav makes a delightful cameo as a quintessential ‘Bihari Bad***’.

The first act happens in Mumbai, which introduces us to these police men & women working at Andheri’s D.N. Nagar Police station. There are many insightful ‘inner police jokes’ that are a treat! They should be discovered in the theatre itself! ‘Shentimental’ borrows a bit from ‘Dabbang’ for sure, in terms of the overall approach to its characters. But ‘Shentimental’ doesn’t have a hero, & that very quickly establishes an altogether different path for the film. The second act is the most fun part where we are on a railway journey from Mumbai to Bihar! But throughout the two acts ‘Shentimental’ never loses the emotional grip on the audiences.

The final act is a sheer roller coaster ride! Sameer Patil manages to actually transport us to ‘Bihar’! Only the language of this film remains ‘Marathi’ rest of it makes us forget that we are actually watching a Marathi film. We wish the third act was longer, because somewhere the end is a bit abrupt (though it doesn’t spoil our overall experience in any way). Almost every film that aspires for commercial success in India tries to mix & match humour with emotional drama. But very few of them actually manage to figure out the right blend! That too without interrupting the natural rhythm of the story! ‘Shentimental’ is one of those few Indian films that give a ‘complete’ experience to our audiences.

Ashok Saraf’s comeback has been hugely awaited by his countless fans & all of them will have a ball watching the man still dictate the big screen with the same finesse & control! Yes the energy’s not the same, but it’s understandable & also suits a man who is only two years away from his retirement. The back story of Prahladrao’s character is actually relatable to any working common man who has grown up sons or daughters & is nearing his retirement & not just the police.

Upendra Limaye - Shentimental Marathi MovieThere’s a little love story established in the first act between Vikas Patil’s character & Pallavi Patil’s character, that needs a mention. Mainly because it can work as a perfect example of how to treat a sub-track in a story! It’s smartly been connected with the extended point ‘Shentimental’ makes about the condition of police & their hectic life. Even their song ‘Ithech Mandu’ so beautifully represents the same.

Vikas Patil - Shentimental Marathi MovieSameer Patil’s ‘Poshter Boyz’ & ‘Poshter Girl’ were good, but in parts! Here he has managed to give Marathi cinema an extremely essential dose of guilt free entertainment that also has few important things to say.

Overall:

Shentimental’ is a film that is technically well crafted, emotionally strong & refreshingly funny throughout! Not to forget it makes an essential social commentary about the regional disputes between Bihar & Maharashtra! What more can a Marathi movie fan desire!

Pindadaan Marathi Movie Review:

When I had reviewed Prem Kahani a few months back, I was hoping there would not be any other film that would be as bad. In the back of my mind I had confidently even made its entry in the first number in a list of worst films, incase I had to make one at the end of the year.PremKahani had plunged to such depths of mediocrity that I felt that it would scarcely be likely that any film would even come close. Pindadaan almost proved me wrong.

Pindadaan PosterThe film is so bad that I don’t know where to start from. The plot? Well, the plot was so thin that it would not have been enough even for a 30 minutes slot on TV. Ashutosh and Ruhi are two Maharashtrians working in London for a TV channel. Ashutosh is a director of science documentaries and Ruhi is his trusted cameraman. He lives in a rented apartment with a landlady(Stella) who has had a tough life growing up all alone in a man’s world. She refers to one of the lady in the picture hung on her wall as a ‘heartless angel’ who left her behind all alone. Ruhi is a loner who has fallen in love with her director, however, unfortunately for her, the love is unrequited.

Now, Ashutosh’s Mom wants him to do his grandmom’s after-death rituals or ‘pindadaan’ by going to India. Ashutosh, who is apparently born and brought up abroad, obviously hesitates. At this point the screenwriter must have come up with the problem of having a plausible reason to send Ashu and, as Ruhi is in love with him, her too, to India. So in a dazzling display of lazy screenwriting he comes up with the very convenient reason of sending them both to India to make a documentary on what else but ‘pindadaan’!

Paula McGlynn - Pindadaan Marathi MovieThis isn’t just where the whole believability of the film suffers. Things get even worse when the story shifts to India. In the village where he has come to do the ‘pindaadan’ and even make a documentary on it, Ashu starts falling for a mysterious white English girl in the village and it becomes obvious where the film is heading from there. But what gets on your nerves is that the film takes hell of a lot of time to get to its conclusion. Verylittle happens in the first half or even in the beginning of the second half. It is only in the last 30 mins that there is some sort of vibrancy in the film. Apart from this there are various other aspects that raise serious question marks: Ashu spends most of his time chasing the English girl Anna, so when does he work on the documentary which is apparently complete by the end of the film? What was the point of introducing the character Ruhi as she did not play any part in the story after it moves to India? Why are we mislead into believing that it is Stella’s daughter who has abandoned her?

Another thing that gets on your nerves is the terrible attempt at speaking Marathi by the English actor. It feels as if the makers of the film here just wanted to play to the fascination we Indians have for the ‘white skin’.

What salvages this film somewhat from being as bad as PremKahani is that the actors in lead roles (ManvaNaik and SiddharthChandekar)try their best, though they can’t help much about the very shoddy screenplay and direction.

Overall:

Pindadaan makes you really wonder about the mechanisms of how the film the Marathi film industry works. It seems difficult to believe that this film with such a sloppy screenplay found a producer, actors and technicians to back it and a distributor who thought it might work with the Marathi public.

Pindadan a film starring Manava Naik and Siddharth Chandekar is ready for the release. The makers of the film have released the song “Hey Mann Zhale Tujhe” on the social media platforms. The song features Manava and Siddharth in a very romantic situation.

The song has been sung by Anandi Joshi and composed by Sagar Dhote. Vaibhav Joshi has penned the lyrics. The song articulates soft and romantic expression of love through the attractive words. The song also has some passionate love making scenes picturised very beautifully. The feel of passion has been essayed by Manava and Siddharth is very good and justifies the emotions of the song completely.

Siddharth looks very cool and handsome in this film. Manava has never looked so sexy on the screen before. The silky voice of Anandi adds to the magic of the song. Use of instruments like Saxophone and flute makes the song more enchanting. The composer Sagar Dhote has manages to retain the freshness of this song in a very innovative way.

The film has been directed by Prashant Patil and written by Avinash Ghodke. The film also stars international actress Paula Mcclain in a very important role.
Pindadan will be releasing on the theatres on 17th June 2016.

Canadian actress Paula McGlynn who will be seen in PindaDaan along with Siddharth Chandekar and Manva Naik has taken Marathi lessons for her role. To get her accent correct, Paula started reciting Gayatri Mantra. She also made sure she knew the meaning of every word she was reciting. “As I knew the meaning of my dialogues it became easy for me to memorize them and express them” Paula commented.

Paula will be playing role of a British girl Anna, who comes to India and falls in love with Indian culture and decided to stay here.
