Khichik‘ releasing on 20th September stars Prathamesh Parab, Siddharth Jadhav, Rasika Chavan, Paula L McGlynn and other artists! The film seems like a heartfelt story of people migrating from rural to urban parts! On this occasion we catched up with Prathamesh Parab and asked him about his experience of being a part of ‘Khichik’!

You don’t seem to particularly choose lead roles in your films! But still there’s something unique about the characters you play. Is it the same in ‘Khichik’?

Yes, in this film too I play a very unique character. I haven’t played a road romeo who is also a thief before! This film too is very unique. When I first heard the narration I was attracted to this character because he seemed like a boy you can easily identify with and can find anywhere on the street! In real life when we see such characters we feel we should stay away from them! And the look given to my character too is very unique!

How is the character important in the film?

Even if lengthwise it isn’t much a bigger character. But in the second half my character is important to the story. But what I felt the reason this film is important is because it brings together many genres together. The film is set in Vidarbha as well as Pune. So that also brings in different flavors of the regions along with different music, different actors in different looks! Hence it’s a very rare feat for a film to bring together all this variety together in one film.

As you are saying there are many different tracks in the film, what is the one thing that binds all these tracks together?

The character of ‘Fatfati’ is that one thing that binds everyone together. The small kid who is the actual lead of the film and along with him the character of ‘Aaba’. How they bring all these characters together could be explored in the film itself!

Will you be seen romancing in this film? As your fans love you seeing you do that!

The character that I play does like a girl from his heart, but he is not good at wooing girls, neither does he stalk girls! But primarily my character is of a thief! So maybe audiences would be see me playing a completely new character in this film!

Amey Vinod Khopkar Entertianment, Purple Bull Entertainment, Trans FX Studios & Panaroma Studios’ production ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa 2‘ is all set to release in theatres this Friday on 9th of August. The film stars Sanjay Narvekar, Prasad Oak, Aniket Vishwasrao, Priyadarshan Jadhav, Mrinmayee Godbole, Mrinal Kulkarni, Anand Ingle, Vishakha Subhedar & others. After the success of ‘Baghtos Kay Mujra Kar‘ this is the second directorial film actor-writer turned director Hemant Dhome. Here are his thoughts about the film..
  • The first ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ was a hit, did that bring exert pressure on you?
100% there was pressure on me! It’s but obvious when you make a sequel to a successful film. But because of my whole team’s efforts and the backing of my producers and I have been able to make the film that I wanted to make without any compromises, and that makes me happy!
  • Is this a proper sequel? Or a spin off using characters from the first film?

‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa 2’ is based on a completely new narrative. We have only used the characters of ‘Anna’, ‘Tenya’, ‘Ranjana’ & Janhvi Mujumdar from the first film and a new story has been created with many new characters. ‘Anna’ is at the center of the story this time and he is creating a new team of con artists!

  • Tell us about your experience of working with such a huge star cast.

It was a lot of fun. Every artist has a different sense of comedy, and different comic timing! Every one has different strengths and all of it lead to many layers in the narrative! Moreover all of these artists are a friend of mine, hence our shoot was fun and enjoyable.

  • The music of the film has clicked with the audiences. Tell us about the recreation of ‘Ashwini Ye Na’ and about the overall album of the film!

We have experimented a lot in the music. Keeping aside typical sound we have tried to push the boundary. Troy and Arif have done fabulous job, including the background score. I am glad that the audiences have appreciated and loved the recreation of ‘Ashwini Ye Na’! ‘Un Dos Tres’ is a Spanish song that has also worked well and is making everyone dance! Title song of the film is sung by Mika Singh and writer-lyricist Kshitij Patwardhan has written two fun song! We are satisfied to see the great response from the audiences.

  • What do you think is essential for a Marathi film to be successful?

There’s no formula for a successful Marathi film! If the film connects with the audiences I think it is successful! That connection is very important more than the numbers!

Vikram Phadnis directorial ‘Smile Please‘ starring the likes of Mukta Barve, Lalit Prabhakar, Prasad Oak, Aditi Govitrikar & others is set to release this Friday! We chatted with the Bollywood fashion designer turned Marathi filmmaker on this occasion regarding the film & beyond!

You have worked in Bollywood for many years. What was the first revelation you had when you entered Marathi film industry?

Nice question! Yes, I did a mistake. I underestimated the talent of Marathi artists! More than underestimating them I think I didn’t really knew them. But then I became familiar to the power of Marathi talent!

You used to watch Marathi films?

No, not really. I recently started watching Marathi films after many years! When I was a kid my parents used to take me to watch Marathi plays & I had a fading memory of it. Now during Hrudayantar (his first Marathi film) I started watching other Marathi films to know what is happening! I didn’t even knew

Marathi actors face to the name! I only knew Sachin Pilgaonkar, Sachin Khedekar, Mahesh Manjrekar & Ashwini Bhave!

Do you believe the Marathi audience is different from Hindi audience and so on? Or you think audience is audience and it’s same everywhere!

Hindi is a universal language in India so everybody watches it. We don’t watch Telugu and Tamil films much unless we are a part of that industry or we are passionate about that cinema! And those people won’t watch Marathi films! That’s why it’s called regional cinema. So the difference is there but there is no problem that it is there! Every state has their regional cinema and Hindi releases everywhere. It is bound to be that way. Having said that sometimes some film rise above this and people watch movies of other regions!

This is your second consecutive film with Mukta Barve. How was the process different than the first time?

Both of my films are emotional. In both my films the woman is the main protagonist. In the first film she was the narrator, and now in the second film she revolves around the main conflict. It could have gone wrong, we would have falled on our face and people would have said that this is a sequel of Hrudayantar! It could have been risky for her for more and people could have said that he has made the same film again. Because people look at actors later but they will see the teaser/trailer and say that it looks like the first!

But it doesn’t look like that!

Because I am doing a sensitive subject! If I was doing a comedy, horror, action, rom com it would not have! since the genres are similar. I know my weaknesses that I can’t do an out & out and comedy or an action film. And I also know my strengths. Like in chess we know which pawn should be moved in which direction similarly I know how to Mukta in the right direction. If I moved her to the same direction or the wrong direction I would be moving her to the dead end. But Mukta has the versatility in her that she can give two different option in films with similar genres! Also I wanted Mukta to be a part of this journey as this is a tribute to my mother!

You said now that both your films are emotional. Along with that both your films are also concerned with illness, in this case mental illness.

I would hate to call it a illness! Because I’ve seen it from close quarters. I don’t think it’s a illness, it’s a phase that you go through. I am happy right now. 6 minutes later if I’m sad doesn’t mean I’m ill! I would hate to call it a sickness also! It’s a condition. People who think it’s a sickness or illness, it’s not right. Stability and instability comes in your life like day and night! After the night the day comes! I want to bring this to the forefront that when such condition arise in our lives defeat is not the answer! We shouldn’t loose hope and say to others ‘Chal Pudhe Chal Tu’!

For whatever this film is about there may not be pharmaseutical remedies. You may not be taking a pill to cure yourself. But if your mind and your soul are right are positive and healthy, you can face what the condition of this film is!

Doctor turned model and model turned actress Aditi Govitrikar is again living a doctor’s role, this time in a new Marathi film ‘Smile Please‘. The film also stars Mukta Barve, Lalit Prabhakar & Prasad Oak! We made her open up about this new film, role and also about Marathi cinema!

Ringa Ringa (2010) was your first Marathi film. And now you are in Smile Please. How do you think Marathi cinema has evolved over the years?

I think Marathi cinema has always had powerful content! Yes there was a time when ‘comedy’ had taken over but after that superb content has been continued! It has been a journey of ups and down but still all genres are working, maybe except Horror in my understanding. Different slice of life stories too are working for the audiences.

You have worked with Vikram Phadnis (the director of ‘Smile Please’) as a model. And now you are working with him as a actor. How is the director in him different than the fashion designer in him?

He has thought me everything as a model. From how to pose to how to walk on the ramp. And as a director his unseen side was came in front of me! He is super talented! I asked him why he didn’t direct for so many years! The way he tells stories, emotions and his understanding about relationships, not in a dramatic way but in a very subtle way he shows all of that on the screen. It touches everybody’s heart!

What is the importance of your character in the story of the film?

As you can see in the trailer I play a doctor in this film. But she isn’t just a doctor to Mukta’s character but also a close friend of her. They go back together from their college days. So there are many aspects to the character both as a friend and as a doctor! I can’t reveal beyond this!

Which are some of your favorite Marathi films?

(Director Vikram Phadnis prompts ‘Hrudayantar’) Yes that is one of my all time favorite films! But Deool, Anandi Gopal and many others are among my favorite films!

Smile Please‘ this Friday’s big Marathi release stars a big star cast of Mukta Barve, Lalit Prabhakar, Prasad Oak, Aditi Govitrikar and others. The film deals with a mental condition and how does a person tackle it! We chatted with Mukta Barve about the film and her role in this film!

What does ‘Smile Please’ the title of the film stand for in the context of the film?

Every actor in the film is saying it currently but I believe it’s the message of the film that needs to reach out to viewers who watch the film. These two words ‘Smile Please’ have become very redundant in our world today, when people say ‘Smile Please’ we laugh artificially for a photo! It is not just a physical action but it has to be imbibed into a person! The film believes nothing is difficult in this world! If we try happiness is achievable!

You have played many important and challenging roles in your career. What was challenging in this role of yours?

The fun part about this role was that I didn’t have the luxury of using emotional memory of this character which I usually have! Which in fact is the base of all characters and you’ll know when you watch the film that why I couldn’t use it! And hence I had to unlearn many things as the role demanded it! Many things I learned it in a new way. It’s like you have to communicate what’s inside of you to the audiences but without the usual mediums that you have to communicate! Definitely this was a challenging role and I had to approach it a very new way!

The chemistry between you and Lalit Prabhakar is evident from the trailer. How was your experience working with him?

It was great. I had seen his recent film ‘Anandi Gopal‘. I like his screen presence very much. He brings a lot of energy on the screen. And his character in ‘Smile Please’ brings a lot of positive energy on the screen. And as a co-actor he is always thinking about the film and the whole script. And he even has queries to ask to the director. So when I do scenes with him I feel that we travel together in this journey. He is not like an independent player who scores his 100 alone! So I enjoy the give & take while working with him.

Is Prasad Oak’s role in ‘Smile Please’ an extended cameo of sorts or a proper full fledged role?

I had worked with him in ‘Ek Dav Dhobipachhad’. But we hadn’t worked together to this length! So yes he has a proper big role in the film! It was Vikram’s (director Vikram Phadnis) decision to not reveal much about his role in the trailer as the he wants the audiences to be surprised in theatres!

Subodh Bhave is currently on a role, this year he has been ruling on both Marathi cinema & now with the success of ‘Tula Pahate Re’ he has again become a household star who meets the audiences daily through their T.V. But at same time his hugely anticipate biopic of Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar is all set to release this diwali. The trailer of ‘Ani..Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar’ has impressed the audiences & critics all alike & everyone is expecting a huge blockbuster for Marathi cinema this Diwali when the film releases on 8th November! Here’s Subodh Bhave’s views on Theatre & Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar!

Sir, we all are aware that you started your acting career with theatre! Tell us which are your favourite Marathi Plays of all time!

One play I just can’t forget is ‘Dhyanimani’! It starred Shivaji Satam & Neena Kulkarni back then! And then all plays of Satish Tare! I have loved every play that I have seen of his & I have always been a huge fan of his!

Did you get a chance to watch Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar perform live on theatre? Or did you read his plays?

No, I didn’t get the chance. I was in 5th Std. when he died. But I remember one monologue of his from the play ‘Raygadala Jevha Jag Yete’. I used perform that in my program. I hadn’t read his other plays. And for ‘Ani..Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar’ I followed Abhijit Deshpande’s script as he had thoroughly researched on Dr. Ghanekar & his life & his work in theatre!

Now that you’ve played him in the film, you are aware of the characters he played. If you get a chance, which of his characters would you like to play on theatre?

I had seen the play ‘Ashrunchi Jhali Phule’! Not starring Dr. Ghanekar, but the later adaptation where Shreyas Talpade played his part! I find that role fascinating & I would any day love to play the character of ‘Lalya’ from ‘Ashrunchi Jhali Phule’!

You have now played the role of a theatre artist in the medium of cinema, if you get a chance to play the role of a theatre artist in theatre, what would you enjoy more?

To me the medium isn’t important. Getting to do good characters in any mediums is important! Whether it is cinema or theatre or even serials, to me the character on it’s own is more important & not the medium! If I get a chance to play Dr. Ghanekar’s role in theatre I would surely do it, if time & other things permit me!

Do you think if Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar was alive today & was functioning in today’s modern world of films! What fun would have he had as an actor?

I am not sure if he would have done films had he been working today! Even today he would have done theatre as films didn’t really connect with him. Both biopics that I have done of artists; Bal Gandharva & Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar, never enjoyed working in cinema. Because both of them had a direct connect with the audience, they loved the ‘live’ medium of theatre!

The trailer of ‘Ani..Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar’ starring Subodh Bhave in the title role excited the audiences about the film! As much love Subodh has got for his portrayal of ‘Dr. Ghanekar’ from  the trailer equal amount of love & fascination is being expressed on Sumit Raghvan’s portrayal of ‘Dr. Shriram Lagooo’! Here’s what the talented actor has to say about the film & his work!

How would you describe playing the role of Dr. Lagoo in ‘Ani..Dr.Kashinath Ghanekar’? Was it challenging or frightening?

I am really thankful to Abhijit (Abhijit Deshpande, the director) & Nikhil Sane for giving me this role. I did feel the pressure while playing this role as Dr. Lagoo is with us today! Dr. Lagoo is an acting school on his own! And in this film there’s a conflict between the two schools of acting that Dr. Lagoo & Dr. Ghanekar represent! I didn’t understand how to react when this role was offered to me, because Dr. Lagoo himself will be watching this film! He even saw my play ‘Hamlet’ & he met me after the play & he was teary eyed! So now playing him in a film is very emotional & challenging for me!

What exactly is your role in this film? Is it a cameo or an extended cameo or something else?

In a way yes, I am playing a cameo. But Dr. Lagoo’s character is very important in the film, in shaping the screenplay of the film! Dr. Ghanekar was a very different actor than Dr. Lagoo. Dr. Ghanekar was flamboyant, & he played to the gallery, while Dr. Lagoo was more within him & more studious as an actor. Dr. Lagoo was like Rahul Dravid & Dr. Ghanekar was like Sehwag!

Dr. Lagoo once said that an actor has to be an athlete! I think it applies to you perfectly as you look the same as you looked 10 years ago! How do you think the fitness of an actor helps an actor in his acting?

See when I am fit physically the audiences have scope to watch me in different roles! Today I am 47 years old, if I start looking my age I won’t be able to fit into different roles! Moreover an actor’s body is like his own instrument. And even after that the shelf life of an actor is less. You get around 25 years! And only great fitness can let you extent it to even 50 years!

We’ve seen you in Hindi films, serials & in Marathi but your mother tongue is Tamil! Would you ever be interested in dong Tamil films?

I would love too! That’s the language that is spoken in my house by my parents. While I am not an expert in Tamil, I definitely communicate in it & with a bit of homework I can certainly be comfortable to do a Tamil film!

Sachin Khedekar is a veteran actor on Marathi screen for more than 25 years and has many acclaimed films to his credit like ‘Mee Shivajiraje Bhosle Boltoy’, ‘Kaaksparsh’, ‘Aajcha Mazha Divaas’, etc and now his most eagerly awaited film ‘Baapjanm’ is about to release and we caught up with him at the trailer launch of the film .Here is what he has to say.

‘Baapjanm’ sounds like a very strange title?

Yes. But it is relevant to the story of the film. We have often seen films on relationships between a motherand her son, but this film will focus on the relationship between a father and a son and I play the father in the film. He is not an emotional father but a strict disciplinary one.  It focuses on the generation gap that exists between the present generation and the older one. Director Nipun Dharmadhikari who makes his debut with this film has presented the film in a different and effective way.

What is your opinion about the debutant director Nipun Dharmadhikari?

He is young and talented and I have seen him perform and direct in plays staged in Pune and the Purushottam Karandak and he has also acted in a very nice way in the film ‘Highway’. He has a very bright future ahead of him. He shot the film in just 35 days in and around Pune. It was a pleasure working with him.

Baapjanma Upcoming Marathi MovieWhat is the other cast of the film?

The film also stars Pushkrakj Chirputkar, Sharvari Lohkare, Satyajeet Patwardhan and Akarsh Khurana.

You are gradually moving towards character roles.

Yes. At my age one can’t expect more and there is a lot of depth in the characters I play and its also an always pivotal role in the film. Marathi films are generally character driven and not hero or heroine oriented. The graph of the actor and the role is very important like my roles in the recently released Kaccha Limboo, etc.

Whats next on the anvil?

I am waiting for a good book adaptation for a film in Marathi as the Marathi culture is full of great authors and I am waiting for some director to approach me with such a role. Also I am acting in Hindi films like Judwaa 2 and Golmaal-4.

Do you find any difference in Marathi and Hindi film industry ?

Basically it’s the same but the atmosphre on a Marathi film set is very friendly and less stressed out and whereas on a Hindi film set, its all chaos and there is a lot of stress and a lot of a noisy atmosphere on the sets.

Please name any five films in Marathi that you are really proud of.

Astitva, Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy, Aajcha Divas Majha , Kaaksparsh and Shikshanachya Aicha Gho.

Any plans of turning director?

No. I  am not temperementally fit to be a director. I am happy being an actor.

Shivya, a film by Sakar Raut is ready for the release. The title of the film is a bit different, and teasers have added curiosity for the audience. The film stars Bhushan Pradhan and Sanskruti Balgude in the lead roles. We have seen Bhushan and Sanskruti together in Pinjra (serial) and Nivadunga.

We spoke with Bhushan about his new film and his role. Here are some excerpts from this interview.

Bhushan, tell us about your role in Shivya.

I am playing role of Raghav, main protagonist of the film. This character has a bad habit of swearing and using bad words all the time. He is not an evil person, but his mouth always lands him in the trouble. He creates a bad impression with his swearing words even while calling his friend in the public. His personal and professional life is disturbed. One day, he decided that he will not use such words. What happens next will be seen in the film. I will not tell you much about it; otherwise we will miss the fun part. Playing this role was very entertaining for me.

Did the makers of the film face any problems with censor board due to such bad words?

Not as such. We have found a great solution to this problem in the second half which you have to see on the screen. The first half contains such words, but either we have used acceptable words which censor board has Okayed. This is not a  film for the children, as the subject is not appropriate for them. Yet, some words have been either muted out or beeped. It gives slight disturbance to the flow of the film. Apart from that, I don’t think there was any problem with the censor board.

You have done a serial and films with Sanskruti. How the experience has been?

As I have worked with her previously on small screen and big screen, there is a definite comfort between us.   We shot for this film and then did Nigvadunga. However, Nivadunga released first as this film’s post production took some time.We love working with each other. Comfort level and our friendship make our working even more interesting. We know how other person will react in front of the camera. This comfort level enhances our screen presence and chemistry.

This will be your second film with director Sakar Raut.

Yes, I have done “kalakar” with him earlier. It was his debut film as a director. We are growing as a team. We were newcomers by then, so we decided to make better films by learning and undoing our mistakes. Sakar trusts his actors and make them comfortable. He has a clear vision about what he wants to show on the screen. However, that does not mean that he will tell us exactly what to do. He will give a freedom to the actor and still get a perfect shot. This is one of those rare production houses which treat actors very professionally. Working with them is a great experience.   They have bettered there working style and made it more proficient. I prefer working with such people.

Marathi films are getting more awards in recent years. Do you think there is an increasing gap between “a film” for classes and masses?

No. Actually I think the gap is diminishing. We are making films which have a class and will make a good turnout at box office. We have always made great films, but unfortunately getting a theatre release for such films was our problem. See the example of films like Fandry. The film was critically acclaimed and won many national and international film festival awards. The film did very good at the box office. I am glad that such films are being made and released so that Marathi audience is growing in terms of visual arts. Audience is waiting for such films; I think this is surely a good sign for the audience.

Can you tell us more about your upcoming films?

My two films are ready for the release. One is Dadar Mumbai 28 where I am playing a major role. Tee aani itar is a film by Govind Nihlani, where I am working with Subodh Bhave, Sonali Kulkarni and Amruta Subhash. Recently I have completed a shoot with Prarthana for an untitled film. The post production for this film is going on and will be releasing in the second part of this year.

Apart from acting what are your hobbies?

Acting was my hobby, but I turned into a profession. I also like to watch English films. They have such fantastic day to day stories in their romantic comedies. Watching such film is a great stress buster for me.

Bhushan, Thanks for speaking with us. We wish all the best for your upcoming release and the future.

On the occasion of an upcoming release ‘Dhyanimani’ we got the opportunity to ask one of India’s boldest filmmaker & a free spirited soul Mahesh Manjrekar a few questions regarding acting, directing & everything in between!

What drives you to choose a project as an actor/producer?

Well to talk about this (Dhyanimani) subject specifically, I actually wanted to direct it. Even while producing this play (in 1993) I thought of it as a film. So when I entered the film line I always wanted to make this film & I also wrote the screenplay for it. I decided at some point I’ll ask Chandu (Chandrakant Kulkarni) & Prashant (Dalvi) about it. But then they said, they’ve written the screenplay & they want to do it themselves. I said fine. Anyhow, I wanted this film to be made. The subject itself is so off-beat that it’s difficult to categorize it in a specific genre. In a way it’s a thriller, a suspense film & has an emotional impact but beyond that it has its own USP, a shock element to it.

From ‘Kshitij’ A Doordarshan serial to ‘Rege’ many of your roles have become immortal. How would you specify your approach to acting? Are you a method actor?

When I did ‘Kshitij’ the stigma of ‘Leprosy’ was huge. One spot of Leprosy could destroy a man’s life. Actually, one type of Leprosy was curable (the other type wasn’t). But otherwise too it wasn’t infectious. That was a very important serial in my life, I was also the writer of it. I was extremely proud of it & I felt it was ahead of its time.

Even your performance in ‘Kaante’ was ahead of its time.

In case of ‘Kaante’ all others were heroes & I got to play a guy who’s a drug peddler. So I did my homework. I asked the director if he’s using sync sound. So when he said yes. I decided to use the ‘stammer’ & the director agreed. I still feel that everyone performed really well but I stood out because of my ‘stammer’. I did it because I felt that suited the madness of that character.

This role (in Dhyanimani) seems to be a difficult role to play, emotionally. Does it affect you personally?

I never take my role home. I am not a “Method Actor”. I don’t have that much patience. When the director says ‘Action’ I am into the role & the moment he says ‘Cut’ I am out of it!

Many Marathi plays are being adapted for the screen. What about other Marathi literature?

Look, there’s a reason to it. It’s a simple human psychology. In case of other literature one needs to read & create the images on his own. A filmmaker is subconsciously lured by plays because he’s already seen it. Now ‘Kakpsarsh’ was based on a work of literature. But for that Girish Joshi worked hard on it & gave it a visual form which helped me as a director.

Mahesh Manjrekar Still - Dhyanimani

So do we need more professional screenwriters?

I feel we have very few good screenwriters. Every day I get phone calls that they’ve written Oscar-winning scripts! If you read them they are pathetic, but in their own mind, it’s a masterpiece. Film line is the most abused line. If you can’t do anything in your life, you decide to be a director! All these so called writers & directors are in plenty today, whereas a good writer has no value. I think the most well-paid profession should be of writers.

You’ve implied a bold “Baghu Naka” marketing strategy for Dhyanimani. This should inspire others.

I don’t know about others. But I’ll tell you why I did this. See I am also doing another song & dance film. So I would readily invite the audience who likes that kind of cinema. In that case, if you’re expecting something thought provoking you should avoid it. I trust the audience. If you give anything good it has its own audience. There’s a song & dance audience & there’s serious film’s audience. But when the song & dance film lovers come to watch a serious film, they ridicule it. This results in negative word of mouth which is unfair to the film. These audiences might even distract (the popcorn & stuff) the serious film watchers watching the film.

What is your equation working with Chandu Sir (Chandrakant Kulkarni)? Does the director in you come in between your work as an actor?

Never, but I can discuss with Chandu since he has done theater. In other cases, I prefer the ‘supply according to demand’ philosophy. I am being paid to do exactly what the director wants me to do. I never think too much of it. But with Chandu it’s a different scenario. I share my vision with him. There’s scope for discussion & we come to common grounds. However the last word will always belong to Chandrakant Kulkarni. Actually if we observe there’s no other director around who works with his actors so wonderfully.

Nana Patekar said in an interview that he wants to play ‘Sakharam Binder’ in a film directed by you. What are your thoughts?

I said this to Nana that actually I am not convinced about it. Nothing against ‘Sakharam Binder’, it’s definitely a milestone play written by Vijay Tendulkar. The problem is I can’t see Nana as ‘Sakharam Binder’. I don’t doubt his acting skills, we all know he can absolutely smash it as an actor. The problem is his godly image in the hearts of the people. With his recent works as ‘Dr. Prakash Amte’, ‘Natsamrat’ & his actual work for ‘NAM Foundation’ he has reached an iconic status. His image will affect the film. I don’t think the audiences would like Nana playing a womanizer. They respect him a lot. However, I would definitely want to work on a different film with Nana. As a director, I am obviously greedy to work with a great actor like Nana Patekar again. That film has to be eye popping but it shouldn’t be something in which people won’t accept Nana in.
