Quick Viewpoint: ‘Girlfriend’ is a smart emotionally strong romantic comedy that both addresses the typical traits of the genre & also redefines most of them on it’s own! It also incorporates the changing definition of love in today’s social media savvy world.

What Works? 

• To start with, both Amey Wagh and Sai Tamhankar are exceptionally good in the film! Especially Amey has totally succeeded in convincing us that ‘Nachya’ is a real person with real issues and real fantasies! He uses a completely different physicality and mannerisms than his previous roles. Whereas Sai’s portrayal of ‘Alisha’ adds a unique sense of wonder to the film (talking more about her would be spoilers) along with her usual charm. And their chemistry together is what elevates the film overall, otherwise the narrative of the film might have felt a bit fabricated.
• Writer-director Upendra Sidhaye has crafted the film in two clearly distinct segments; up until the interval and after the interval. Both halves still work even when narratively the twists are a bit hard to believe. The strangeness of the second half is a bit difficult to digest at first (even when we are thoroughly entertained in the journey) but slowly as the characters before us start unveiling their inner natures & their chemistry starts mingling together, in no time we buy the strangeness! The film in fact celebrates “strangeness” in many ways.
• For the first time in Marathi cinema we are seeing actual understanding of our new social media infused societal culture. No longer can we have a private life when we have chosen to have people surrounding us. We are judged everywhere & in every way now. The film doesn’t criticize this new societal behaviour but it recognizes all of that. And in a rom com genre that is no lesser accomplishment to start with!
• A recent Hindi film ignited a debate about glorification of morally wrong things done by the “hero” of the film. Here, there are a few morally questionable things that our “hero” indulges in, but the contrasting approach given to the character of the “heroine” completely baffles our train of thought and makes us feel stupid to even think of anything of this sort in the first place! Now that’s what good story tellers do, they smartly manipulate you! 
• Girlfriend’s another big strength is that it never lets us realize how beautiful it is technically and how much hard work has been done by every department of the film! Later when the film keeps lingering in our mind we realize all those little details that made the film so wholesome!

What Fails? 

• Nothing. Absolutely.

Final Verdict: Urban Rom Coms made anywhere in India today are slightly similar to each other consciously or otherwise. But ‘Girlfriend’ stands out in all of them because of it prioritizes the people in the love story more than the love story itself! As we only buy into the love story when we love the people in it!

Rasika Sunil became a household name as ‘Shanaya’ in the popular Zee Marathi serial ‘Majhya Navryachi Bayko’. But then she left the serial & was replaced by another actress. But even after her leaving the serial her craze & fan following hasn’t left her one bit!

Recently during the shooting of the film ‘Gatmat’ the production team faced a lot of trouble because of her fan club! The whole unit was irritated by the huge number of fans. Just for a glimpse of Rasika Sunil her fans even climbed the high-security wall created on the set. Many of the fans used their mobile to catch her glimpse as it was difficult to meet her there.

The shooting of the film was disturbed because of the intrusion of the fans of Rasika Sunil! It’ll be interesting to see if the audiences respond similarly in theatres when the film releases! Zee Marathi’s Majhya Navryachi Bayko has reached high TV ratings from the very beginning of the serial. The characters of Radhika, Gurunath, Shanaya & others have made a bond with the audiences. Some time ago another interesting character of Soumitra was added in the scheme of things!

Soumitra has been trying his best with his unusual tactics to make Gurunath realize his mistake. Soumitra has figured out that Shanaya doesn’t really love Gurunath but she loves his money. So separate Gurunath & Shanaya Soumitra is himself trying to impress Shanaya with his wealth! From taking her to a lavish dinner to gifting her a credit card Soumitra is slowly making Shanaya fall for him!

We are also seeing that Gurunath is being affected by this tactic of Soumitra. He even accuses Radhika that this is her plan to separate him from Shanaya! It would be interesting to see in coming episodes of Majhya Navryachi Bayko whether Shanaya leaves Guru for Soumitra? Not many times we see audiences getting connected with supporting characters in a serial. Zee Marathi’s ‘Majhya Navryachi Bayko’ is a healthy exception. The audiences are involved & interested in the supporting characters as much they are bothered about the lead characters. As we all know this serial is mainly about ‘Gurunath’, ‘Radhika’ & ‘Shanaya’ but equal importance have been given by the audiences to the characters of Revati & Mr. Gupte!

From many episodes we have been seeing how Revati & Mr. Gupte fell in love with each other. At first Revati declined Mr. Gupte’s proposal as she couldn’t get over her anger against men in general. But Radhika & others finally changed Revati’s decision! Soon in the coming episodes we’ll be seeing Revati & Mr. Gupte getting married!

Revati played by Shweta Mehendale (wife of actor Rahul Mehendale) has garnered lots of love from the audiences & so has Mr. Gupte who is played by Yash Pradhan. In a way this serial has also supported a progressive idea of divorced people getting married again as love can happen to anyone at any stage of their lives.

Bus Stop Marathi Movie Review :

How do I put this? There are certain films that are simply pointless. They are not even irritatingly bad. You just can’t enjoy such films in any possible way. This multi-starrer mishap belongs to that category of films. A few months back we had another ‘disaster’ in the college romance genre ‘F.U.’ while F.U. was equally bad it was also ambitiously ridiculous, so ridiculous that you might end up enjoying the nonsense it keeps hitting you with. In case of ‘Bus Stop’ you are simply bored.

There is factually no conflict to the story! Rather there is no story, just a bunch of overgrown college students fooling around the campus. Maharashtra’s most loved writer/performer Pu La Deshpande once said when older people make movies about the youth they end up making miserable movies. The same is the case with ‘Bus Stop’, the writing has no real understanding of what today’s youth are really about. But forget that the film doesn’t even manage to put together whatever it thinks it knows, even though what it knows is nothing!

It’s such a pity to watch actors like Siddharth Chandekar, Aniket Vishwasrao, Amruta Khanwilkar, Pooja Sawant, Sanjay Mone, Avinash Narkar, Vidyadhar Joshi & Sharad Ponkshe being wasted. Especially Siddharth’s performance, he almost portrays his disinterest of doing this film. Uday Tikekar & Hemant Dhome play characters which they’ve been playing for a long time now, they are a fine example of typecasting in Marathi.

Many a times we feel the makers just stumbled upon the title ‘Bus Stop’ & then to justify it shifted few scenes at a ‘Bus Stop’. But one thing’s for sure the trailer did suggest us that the parents will have a perspective in this film. And they do! Vidyadhar Joshi’s character who plays father to Pooja Sawant is probably the only interesting character. His confusion of whether to give his child utmost freedom or whether to curb it like his friends, could’ve been evolved. But the film almost restlessly makes him a caricaturish filmy father!

Since the film doesn’t work on the most basic stage of having a plot, conflict. The casting mistakes are actually secondary. But in general Marathi cinema needs to understand that we are unlike Bollywood! Bollywood can afford to cast older ‘stars’ in younger roles, because the point is they are ‘stars’. We don’t really have stars! We have actors. And secondly Marathi cinema has been manufacturing teenage films for a while now, in which actual teenagers play teenage characters. Hence the audiences too are not used to watching older actors in younger roles.

We didn’t really notice but technically the film is definitely decent, but then it doesn’t change anything. Among the actors as said above Siddharth looks completely disinterested, the same is the case with Aniket Vishwasrao to some extent. Hemant Dhome’s caricaturish funny guy fails terribly. His relationship with Sharad Ponkshe (his father who owns a Vada Pav shop) could’ve been funnier had it been developed in a better way. Among the girls Amruta Khanwilkar & Pooja Sawant do their bit in whatever scope their parts provide them.

The songs too are forgettable or plain boring just as the film. One of the songs is a clear rip-off of ‘Ratta Maar’ song from Karan Johar’s ‘The Student of the Year’. During the runtime of this film I genuinely wished, why can’t these makers randomly select a foreign college movie & blindfoldedly make a copy of it! But then I feel even that isn’t an easy

Overall:

‘Bus Stop’ supposedly had the ‘youth’ as their target audience. But if you dared to watch this film, I assure you, you’ll feel like a ‘Target’ on which this film is all set to make its ‘Target Practise’.

Bus Stop seems to take this genre to the next level in Marathi.
