  • Review: Welcome Home (2019)
  • Director: Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar
  • Star Cast: Mrunal Kulkarni, Sumeet Raghavan, Dr. Mohan Agashe, Uttara Baokar, Spruha Joshi, Siddharth Menon, Deepa Shriram, Prasad Oak, Sarang Sathaye, Irawati Harshe, Jitendra Joshi, Subodh Bhave & child artist: Pranjali Shrikant
  • Screenplay: Sumitra Bhave
  • Producer: Abhishek Sunil Phadtare, Vinay Bele, Ashwini Sidhwani & Deepak Kumar Bhagat

Quick Viewpoint: Certain films avoid being ‘certain’ in many ways. Welcome Home’s uncertainty is it’s biggest strength. It’s like a breeze of fresh air but air that has a conscience of it’s own.

What Works?

  • The singular most important aspect one needs to address here is how essential good actors are in this film. As usual though in a Bhave-Sukthankar film! These filmmakers use their actors so organically that the whole set up of the film never feels like a set up, it just feels like an actually existing world. Mrunal Kulkarni under Bhave-Sukthankar feels completely at ease, it’s like we always knew there was this intense (at the same time subtle) actor waiting to explode out of her! It won’t be exaggeration to call this her career defining performance!
  • Story telling in films usually manipulates the time factor. Sometimes certain films do not skip or jump time as normally most of the films do. They linger over it, they let you go through the suffocated routine of the time passing. Smallest of things are amplified to their actual size in life. It’s like being trapped with those characters in a very specific time frame of their life. All of this results into a very lively experience of human existence & ‘Welcome Home’ does exactly that!
  • ‘Welcome Home’ gets deeper into our upper middle class society’s skin. It tries to experiment and find what if so & so happens & our people are made to instantaneously react to it! What if an independent middle aged woman suddenly decides to leave her husband’s house & come back to her previous home (or her parent’s home). The results of this experiment are not really demotivating! While going through this the film stumbles upon it’s main subject of research which is the idea of home! And how does a modern day independent woman explores it.
  • Usually ‘coming of age’ is a genre trait that can be spotted in films mainly with teenage protagonists. But here Mrunal Kulkarni’s character comes off age in a very organic and gradual process! And again the time factor let’s us actually understand the process better & how & exactly what triggered the process! One of the main triggers is a charm of character played by Sumeet Raghavan!
  • As said earlier uncertainty is Welcome Home’s biggest strength, by uncertainty I do not mean in terms of the narrative and what would happen next in their life, but in terms of what exactly do we interpret from the proceedings. And it’s something that viewers need to experience on their own in a theatre!

What Fails?

  • Spruha Joshi though has given a much smoother performance when compared to her recent filmography but the only flaw of the film rests on her little track in the film. Her presence within the ‘home’ is quite essential in the film, but the point film wished to make through the rest of her track doesn’t quite gel in the scheme of things and doesn’t feel essential to the film. Moreover the track had a really irritating song.

Final Verdict: In the rich & diverse filmography of filmmakers Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar, ‘Welcome Home’ is a welcome entry! Like in most of their films they have again explored our societal patterns through the case study of family dynamics in a well educated, cultured upper middle class!

And Jara Hatke Marathi Movie Review :

& Jara Hatke generally scores in departments that most Marathi films don’t. It has been promoted smartly, with the posters making ingenious use of the’&’ in the title. It also has a finessed look that will attract the urban multiplex audience to the theatres. The actors all do a fine job, but what the film lacks is the very essential- substance!

Meera (Mrunal Kulkarni) is a botany teacher living in Pune. She is a single parent whose daughter Aastha (Rangole) is studying in Mumbai. She one day meets Aakash (Indranil Sen gupta), her long lost friend, and they hit off very well and fall in love. Akash is a single parent himself with his son Nishant (Siddharth Menon) studying art in Mumbai. The two parents think that it would be less awkward if their two children meet each other themselves. Nishant and Astha also get along well and as their relationship takes a turn into becoming something more than friendship, things get complicated.

The main issue with the screenplay here is that the characters are shown to be all broad-minded and modern individuals, but somehow they are not able to make logical decisions. And this comes across as as quite unconvincing. It is also strange to see the parents who have taken a firm stand of getting married in the first half, choosing conventional and socially acceptable solutions later on.

Siddharth Menon, Shivani Rangole - & Jara Hatke Still Photos

The senior pair here of Murnal Kulkarni and Indranil Sengupta share a good chemistry. The presence of Indranil gives a refreshing Bengali touch to the film. The younger actors are also up to the mark. Siddharth Menon is fast becoming an actor identified with cinema of substance. He also doesn’t seem out of place in a main stream film like Poster Girl. But they can do only so much as the script demands.

Overall:

& Jara Hatke is a film that looks pretty, but lacks enough substance to engage you or make any impact.

Ravi Jadhav has become a brand in himself. There is a certain excitement attached to everything he is related to these days. What sets him apart from his peers is his smart marketing strategies and their design. Ravi Jadhav – a JJ School of Arts grad – has a beautiful sense of aesthetic and that shows from his films and promotion.

& Jara Hatke Marathi Film Promotion

The upcoming film ‘& Jara Hatke’ has been co-produced by him along with Krushika Lulla. And the stamp of Ravi Jadhav is visible in the promotions. The use of the ‘&’ in posters has caught the attention of the public. Each of the posters released have a uniquely designed ‘&’. Design is not only trying to be fancy but there is some thought behind them as well.

& Jara Hatke’ is directed by Prakash Kunte who had made the popular film ‘Coffee Ani Barach Kahi’ last year.He has teamed up with writer Mitali Joshi for the upcoming film. It is about a middle-aged couple deciding to remarry and how their adolescent children try to cope with their decision. It stars Mrinal Kulkarni and Bengali actor Indranil Sengupta in the lead roles along with Siddharth Menon and Shivani Rangole as their children. It is Indranil’s debut in Marathi cinema. We will be witness in an interesting mix of Bengali and Marathi culture in the film.

Poshter Girl has been declared as a super hit on the box office. Dealing with a sensitive subject of Women Empowerment, the film makes it point through a social satire. The leading lady of this film, Sonalee Kulkarni is more than happy with this role. A meaty role in this woman-centric film has given her critical acclaim and box office collections. We spoke to Sonalee about her performance and experience in this film.

Here are some excerpts from this interview.

Congratulations! Poshter Girl has been receiving tremendous feedback from the audience. How does it feel?

It feels amazing. We all worked really very hard for this film. There are some things in your life which are beyond commercial mathematics. I really wished this to do a film do better and appreciated by the audience. All of us are really very passionate about the film. The hard work was enormous but fortunately it has paid off. The impact Poshter Girl has created in the audience mind is more important. It is touching hearts of the people and gaining good money on the box office.  What more can an artiste ask for.

Though both films have different plots, Poshter Girl was thought as the sequel to Poshter Girl. Did you think that it will be compared with the first film?

When you give a successful film, people start expecting more from your second film. This has happened with Sameer as well, Poshter Boys did not have any burden of expectations, but for this film it was obvious that people are going to expect more. The fact that he titles second film similar to his fist film, even though subjects are different, made more speculations. However, fortunately everybody knew that these are two different films, neither sequel nor prequels. For me the most important thing is people like this film immensely. It has gone one step ahead of Poshter Bys in terms of opening on the box office.

Poshter Girl has a usual star cast. There are no definite romantic leads, or a hero. The subject revolves around your character. How does it feel to star in such a woman centric role?

Sonalee Kulkarni - Poshter GirlThe role was really marvelous and I will call it as actress’ dream role. I really wanted to do something like this, and I am so fortunate that makers thought that I could carry this role. The film is about women empowerment but it never becomes preachy. Though it is female oriented film, it is still a very commercial paisa vasool film also. Generally what happens with such films is that they become very preachy and socially biased. In Poshter Girl, the message is never in the face, but very subtle. Hence, it stays with the people for longer time. The best compliment for us is when people tell us that they are laughing and enjoying the film, but when they are coming out of the theatre this film is making them heavy hearted. The film makes you think and feel responsible towards our society and women.  I feel much honored be a part of this film. This is the best thing happened in my career so far.

You were working with Sameer Patil for the first time. How was the experience?

Sameer has a distinctive style as a director. He has a different genre for making films. Working with him becomes very effortless as he is a good actor himself. When you work with new people the elements that are unknown to even you can be explored. This was my first black comedy and social satire. I really appreciate that he thought I can play this character.

How did you prepare for this role?

Rupali Thorat is completely different from all the characters I have played earlier. She is even unlike Sonali Kulkarni. So for me getting into the skin of this character was very difficult. She doesn’t talk much in the film but she always speaks sensible. She is such a strong headed girl yet she never preaches anybody. Getting this balance of the character was really challenging. Everybody else is having some good punch lines and amazing scenes, but she is the only one who is talking very little but sensible. So, I had to work a lot on my dialogue deliveries.

You hail from an urbanized background. Was playing a rural girl a challenge?

My first film Bakula Namdev Ghotale was also a woman oriented title role film where I played a village girl. For Poshter girl, the character was little tricky, though she is rural, she is not brought up in that village. She has studied agriculture in Pune. She has roots and connections to that village but she was not raised there. The trickiest part for me was to bring in the flavor but not to play just like any other village girl. To get this, we approached the character reversely. What generally we do is we start with the looks then think about the body language and then the language. However, for Rupali, we decided about her language and then her looks.  Before shooting I used to record one scene on voice recording and send it to Sameer and then we discuss about it. The character was inspired by Vishwas Nangare Patil. He is also from small town guy so I listened to his speeches and interviews. Rupali Thorat is not over the top fake girl. She is very much real like any other well educated girl from the rural area. This subtlety was the trickiest part but Sameer and Hemant Dhome helped me tremendously.

Jitendra Joshi is such an energetic and spontaneous actor. How was the experience of working with him?

He is a rock star. I have done a farcical comedy “Hay Kay Nay Kay” and small part in Singham with him. He is such a hyper energetic actor. He helped me a lot during this film. Not only him, but all the other actors helped each other to make this film brilliant. For me, this was also a learning experience. Sandeep Pathak is known for his comic timing; Hrishikesh Joshi has an excellent command over Marathi. So, I kept learning from everybody. This is a very rare film which has an ensemble cast, but every cast member is given an excellent scene. So, when I had to do my scenes, every other member helped me a lot. Nobody tried to kill each other’s work, this happens seldom.

Somehow that positive atmosphere and team work shows on the screen as well.

Yeah! We completed each other but never competed. All the five boys had to do lots of hard work, but they always gave their 100 percent. This is the best film crew I have worked so far! Such was the positive and healthy set environment was!

Poshter Girl songs are already chartbusters. Which one is your favourite?

It has to be Rakhumai! We have four different songs in the film composed by Amit Raj and all have become popolar. Avaj vadhav DJ has become a chartbuster immediately after its release in December. But, Rakhumai is a song that will stay with you forever. It has got a classic library value. This song stays with you, it makes you feel, it makes you cry. Every time I listen to this song, I get Goosebumps. It has been written so beautifully and composed so serenely. The real highlight of this song is Pandit Vishvamohan Bhat has played Mohanveena. I am so privileged to be associated with this song.

You said Poshter Girl was your dream role. Now what is ahead?

Your ambition has to go higher. I will not say I have achieved everything in my career. It is time for me to do different roles, as people have started taking me seriously as an actress. Earlier I was more like a glamour doll or just a good dancer. I still love that image but Poshter Girl has given me the credentials for being a substantiated actress. When you do something successful then next thing should be bigger and brighter.  Thus begins my new journey. Poshter girl has proven to everybody including me and my film people that Apsara Aali has become Poshter girl. Now my career has begun on a completely new level. I want to go beyond this and explore myself.

Tell us more about you upcoming projects.

I believe in doing one film at a time. I want to give my 100 percent to a film and I am very passionate about what I do. I had done three films in the previous year. This year Poshter girl has started in a big way and I am working with something equally exciting but it is too early to talk about this project.

Sonalee, Thanks for speaking with Marathistars.com. We wish you all the best for your next projects and expect such nice heartwarming performances from you.

    Poshter Girl Marathi Movie Review:

Poshter Girl is directed by Sameer Patil who had also directed the film Poshter Boyz (2014). It is not exactly a sequel of the 2014 film, but it is still similar in style, flavor and intent. Now, I felt Poshter Boyz was a totally misfired attempt and did not even do well commercially. So, it did not really seem wise to make a similar kind of film. However, now that Poshter Girl is made lets shift the focus on this latest film.

Poster Girl MoviePoshter Girl is definitely an improvement over Poshter Boys. Sameer Patil seems to have learnt from his debut film; his second film does not have as many issues. But, some negatives of Poshter Boyz are found in this film too.

The film is about a village called Tekawade and how due to female infanticide and a rampant misogynist thinking, the village is devoid of any young girl. Tekawade has been blacklisted by all the neighboring villages and nobody is willing to marry off their daughters into that village. However, a strong willed and pretty girl named Rupali (Sonalee Kulkarni) comes to live in the village and all hell break’s loose. A group of five young men – Bharatrao (Hrishikesh Joshi), Bajrang (Aniket Vishwasrao), Arjun (Siddharth Menon), Ramesh (Akshay Tanksale) and Suresh (Sandeep Pathak) – enter into a game of one-upmanship to win Rupali’s heart and get her hand in marriage.

Now, the biggest positive of the film has to be its casting. Hrishikesh Joshi was one of the best things about Poshter Boyz and most likely that is why he has been given a lead character here. In Poshter Girl, too, he steals the show and brings out the most laughs as the childless Uncle Kishan of Rupali who is supervising over this competition (or swyamvar) among the young and most eligible bachelors of the village. Sonalee Kulkarni does justice to her part in the film and doesn’t overact for the most parts. The bunch of eligible bachelors too are well casted and do bring out laughs at some places, but they cannot help being over the top, much like the acting in Poshter Boyz.

Another negative of Poshter Boyz that is found here is the lack of fully developed characters. Apart from Kishan and Rupali almost all other characters are mere caricatures. The screenplay credited to Hemant Dhome and Sameer Patil, has interesting back stories to Bharatrao and Bajrang, however it just scratches the surface and does not allow us to connect with the characters at all. It has all the obvious double meaning jokes and other slapstick scenes that people expect from such a comedy. The gags hardly have anything novel in them, but they might work for the target audience. Poster Girl, thankfully, does not have any ridiculous product placement like Poshter Boyz and neither does it have any inane cameo just for the heck of it.

The attempt to tackle social evils of female infanticide and misogyny in Poster Girl are also marginally more successful than the tackling of the taboo of vasectomy in Poshter Boyz. But, the way the message is put across is certainly a bit pushy and preachy. However, though not fully successful, the attempt to deliver a message in the form of humour is definitely worthy of a little praise.

    Overall:

Despite being better than Poshter Boyz, the film is only partially successful in delivering a message under the garb of humour.

Sonalee  Kulkarni who has been noticed in films like ‘Natarang’ ‘Bakula Namdev Ghotale’, ‘Classmates’, ‘Ajintha’, etc. is now all set to wow the audiences in her forthcoming much buzzed film ‘Poshter Girl’. We spoke to the fair and green eyed beauty at a press meet of the film. Here are some excerpts.

There are a lot of expectations from ‘Poshter Girl’. What are your views?

Yes. It’s the second film directed by Sameer Patil after his successful debut in ‘Poshter Boyz’ and it’s backed by a leading studio like Viacom 18 and has a medley of a leading cast like Hrishikesh Joshi, Aniket Vishwasrao, Hemant Dhome who has also written the story of the film, Jitendra Joshi, etc.

Poshter Girl First Look PoshterWhat is your character in the film like?

I play an ambitious village girl who is studying in Pune and wants to be an agricultural officer but when she comes to her native village, her life changes when she finds that the village has a paucity of marriageable girls for boys and how she is wooed by all the boys of the village and how she finds that  each boy is different in their behavior and manner like she finds Aniket as a very boyish innocent boy, Jitendra Joshi, a very powerful boy of a leading powerful family of the village, Hemant Dhome as a very funny  and completely rural boy and her uncle played by Hrishikesh Joshi wants her to get married to one of these boys and this is the gist of the film.

How close is the character in the film to your real self?

I am also a reasonably ambitious girl also hailing from Pune and I am also a simple girl with simple wants in life and acting is my only passion. I am happy that I have got a female centric role in the film which is always satisfying as an actor.

How was it like working with Sameer Patil as a director?

Unfortunately I hadn’t seen Poshter Boyz before the shooting of the film but I made it a point to see the film after I signed ‘Poshter Girl’ and I found that he is a director who likes the satirical black comedy genre but albeit with a good message and when we shot on the locations in Wai, I found he was a really nice and a complete gentleman who knows his craft and always trying to excel himself. I am very happy that I have acted in this film as I got an opportunity to grow as an actress and also our entire team was like one big happy family.

Sonalee Kulkarni - Poshter GirlIsn’t it a great thing that a big studio like VIACOM 18 is producing this film?

Yes. Marathi cinema has grown over the years and they have made Marathi films in past, some successful like ‘Zapatlela-2, and this is a sign of Marathi cinema coming of age.

Do you have any song and dance sequences for which you are famous for after Natarang’?

Yes, Natarang was a landmark film for me but I have done films in which didn’t have any dance sequences and ‘Poshter Girl’ is one such film. It is a completely performance driven film.

    What’s next?

I like to do one film at a time and after the release of ‘Poshter Girl’ I will take a much needed break for a while and then I will start reading scripts and then sign a very good film.

Are you open to television offers?

Television is not my cup of tea. I like to do things in a very easy paced and a no stress manner and television is too hectic for me and so I want to keep away from television.
