Swapnil Joshi Starrer ‘Mogra Phulaalaa‘ has received very good response from the audience. The film is doing very well in the theaters in Mumbai, Thane, Pune to watch the family drama, which has been subtly narrated. The film registered the business of Rs 37.5 lakh on the first day of it released, followed by Rs 56.2 lakh on Saturday, the second day of the release. Despite of the much hyped cricket match between India and Pakistan on Sunday, June 16,  the film registered the business of Rs 51.5 lakh. The business for first three days was pegged at Rs 1.45 crore.

The response to the film has compelled the producers to increase the number of shows in multiplexes and theaters says Arjun Singh Baran and Kartik Nishandar of GSEAMS Films. Directed by Shrabani Deodhar who has made cult classics in Marathi cinema like ‘Lapandav’ & ‘Sarkarnama’. The film marks debut of Sai Shakti Anand into Marathi cinema who had been seen in popular Hindi serials.

Leading actors from Marathi industry Nina Kulkarni, Chandrakant Kulkarni, Anand Ingale, Sandeep Pathak  too have contributed to the rich production values of the film. Mother played by Nina Kulkarni resembles with the great character of mother played by other noted actresses on silver screen. Award winning director Chandrakant Kulkarni has tried his acting skills after a long period in this film by playing character of Swwapnil’s uncle. Shankar Mahadevan, Bela Shende, Jasraj Joshi and Rohit Raut have sung the songs composed by Rohit Raut and penned by Abhishek Kankhar. The film will be remembered for decades, undoubtedly, owing to the great story, appealing concept duly supported by leading actors and ear soothing songs.

Youngraad Review (Marathi Movie):

Directed by Makarand Mane of ‘Ringan’ fame & backed by ‘Phantom Films’ the iconic indie film studio of Bollywood (& Overall Indian cinema), ‘Youngraad’ is a film that is solid on many levels starting from the casting, to the use of craft (technical), use of background score & the overall direction of the film. What it also manages to do well is inhibiting the ‘Sairat’ influence in a positive way. But the film has issues with the narrative, which hamper the overall takeout for the audiences.

The film begins with a flashback clarifying the protagonist of the film as someone who has got over a dreadful phase in his life & has now grown to be a wiser person. The problem with this device is that it takes away some of the ‘thrill’ in a film that had some traits of a crime thriller. The story revolves around four school going mid teenagers living in the city of Nasik. The first half mostly depicts their friendship through different incidents & the romantic track of the main hero of the film!

The romantic track clearly has a ‘Sairat’ influence but in a very healthy way. It makes us believe whatever it depicts. This in fact is Youngraad’s biggest strength. It never takes away the believability. Except a jail sequence in the second half which also stars Sharad Kelkar in an unnecessarily filmy mode.

As the trailer reveals these four friends start working for a local goon who is soon venturing into politics. This transition of normal fun loving kids to goons of an aspiring politician is almost very easy but still convincing. Then due to some circumstances they decide to leave all this & become clean. This conflict of the film arrives almost at the interval point. The second half then takes a completely new turn. Now this transition both from the narrative point of view & the character transitions aren’t smooth. The film develops quite a few problems in the second half. The biggest being the track of our protagonist in prison. The believability suffers here. However, even in these moments the performance of the lead actor keeps us interested.

Once the protagonist is out from prison the film deals with the aftermath in a bit formulaic way. But it let’s the protagonist dwell around the proceedings deliberately purposeless. We see him roaming around the sub-urban city clueless & with a grim on his face. These little sad moments involving the protagonist & his friends make the second half interesting. There are many errors & plot points left abruptly in the second half, but because of the film’s emotional connect we are affected by the film.

After ‘Ringan’ director Makarand Mane approached a completely new story & partially succeeded in creating another moving film experience. But more work on the writing of the film could’ve taken ‘Youngraad’ to similar heights of ‘Ringan’. However one could easily notice that as a director Mane has still improved his craft, especially the way he has used visual language in ‘Youngraad’. The young actors of the film have given good performances especially the lead actor. Shashank Shende & Savita Prabhune are probably the only well versed actors in the cast & they too have given superb performances. Savita Prabhune has been seen in very few films but she is impressive in all of them, last she was seen in ‘Jaudya Na Balasaheb’.

Overall:

In terms of the commercial value ‘Youngraad’ has everything that today’s youth Marathi audiences would connect with. Including humor & beautifully composed & shot songs. It shouldn’t go unnoticed just because it hasn’t been promoted well!

Makarand Mane, the national award-winning director of ‘Ringan’ is coming up with yet another different movie ‘Youngraad’, the trailer of which was released recently. Produced jointly by Vitthal Patil (Vitthal Patil Production), Gautam Gupta, Gaurav Gupta (Future Works Media Ltd.), and Madhu Mentena ( Phantom Films ), ‘Youngraad’ stars four young actors in the lead, Chaitanya Deore, Saurabh Padvi, Shiv Wagh & Jeevan Karalkar. It also features leading actors including Sharad Kelkar, Savita Prabbhune, Shireen Patil, Monika Chaudhari, Shashank Shende, Vitthal Patil and Shantanu Gangane.

Review:

A musical saga filled with numerous outstanding songs can gain acceptance even if the overall content falls in the above-average category. But this is not the case with Subodh Bhave’s Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. The film excels in every department and turns out to be a treat for your senses.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli is based on the Marathi musical play of the same name. The story takes place in the pre-independence era in Vishrampur, Madhya Pradesh. Pandit (Shankar Mahadevan), a master in classical singing, has been a Rajgayak at the King’s court. As a reward for being a Rajgayak, the king decides to present him a royal dagger (Katyar).

Pandit comes across Khan Saahab (Sachin Pilgaonkar), a singer of a different gharana, at another village. Bowled over by his talent, he suggests Khan Saahab to migrate to Vishrampur so that he earns a decent living. After migrating to Vishrampur, Khan Saahab gives and outstanding performance during a jugalbandi with Pandit. However, the King declares Pandit the winner. This is just the start of Khan Saahab’s frustration. Later on, a young aspiring singer (Subodh Bhave) becomes an important part of Khan Saahab’s enmity with Pandit.

Normally, a musical film deals with subjects like romance or some serious drama. But KKG is a rare music-oriented film whose subject is a mixture of one-upmanship, betrayal and revenge. The writer has blended each of these aspects naturally with music through a intelligent, fast moving script. The duration of 2 hours and 41 minutes doesn’t appear lengthy at all.

The film is Bhave’s first as a director. But he has handled the film like a pro. There is a long list of scenes that leave behind a mark. In fact, it won’t be an overstatement that his next directorial venture is keenly awaited.

Music is the soul in this genre. So, the music just has to be impressive. But what the composers have achieved here is pure excellence! The tracks lead you to a trance.

The film also triumphs in the technical aspects. You can’t help but notice the artistic abilities of the DoP. The background score and editing too are praiseworthy.

The film does have few incidents in the second half that are questionable. On one or two occasions in this half, the going gets a bit dull.

Lastly, the performances take the film few notches higher. Sachin Pilgaonkar surprises you with his brilliant act as Khan Saahab. This is easily one of his career best acts. Subodh Bhave once again excels by showing a lot of dedication.

Shankar Mahadevan makes an impressive acting debut. His acting skills are on display in the latter part. Amruta Khanvilkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande and Pushkar Shrotri are good in supporting roles.

Overall:

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli is an overwhelming musical saga. The film will do well at the box office despite the presence of Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 and Bollywood’s hugely awaited Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Sachin started his journey in the film industry as a child artiste, after doing many roles in Hindi and Marathi, he became director and producer. His movies became milestones in Marathi industry and box office was always favourable to him. His latest role as Khansaheb in Subodh BHave’s Katyar Kaljat Ghusali has already made audience very curious!

Why is this film so important to you?

This is a classic role. Vasantrao Deshpande has taken this role to another level with his performance. Though I do not wish to get compared with him, I was a bit skeptical about this role. I have never played a Muslim classical singer previously. Subodh was very insistent that I will be able to do justice to this role. I did a screen-test with costumes and makeup which made me more confident.

How did you prepare for the role of Khansaheb?

My look was designed by ace make-up artiste Vikram Gaikwad. Judging by the audience reactions of promo, we will say this has really paid off. The results are fantastic. The look is very elegant, authentic andtrue to the core of this character. Though I am a director, I left myself totally under the baton of Subodh. His vision will be different from me, I trusted his vision and his instincts.  I had seen the original play six to seven times, and I have personally met Vasantrao Deshpande. He has sung for some of my films as playback singer, however, I never thought that time about performing this same role.

You are a singer too. But you have not sung for this film?

A person should know his weaknesses and I don’t know classical music,  so I left the singing to the original Khansaheb,  Vasantrao Deshpande’s grandson Rahul Deshpande. He has sung nine songs in the film composed by Shankar  Mahadevan. Shankar has done role of Panditji and as he is a fabulous singer, he has sung all his own songs. However, I have been given a playback and it is the correct way.

Any memorable incidents while shooting for the film?

There are many! Film like this not only looks grand on the screen, but making is also filled with little anecdote.
Shankar and me are ardent foodies. On the sets, we used to keep ordering from various restaurants and always exchanged information about which cuisines and restaurants are worth trying. It was also good to work with good artistes like Amruta Khanvilkar and Saakshi Tanwar.

How happy are you with this film?

I am very happy because I have played a character with a negative shade for the first time. Very few people know my passion about Urdu. This film gave me a chance to speak Urdu throughout this film as my character hails from Bareilly. I have learnt Urdu many years back and my wife and daughter used to make fun of me whenever I speak Urdu. But see, all that practice has come handy for this film!

The look of the film is very grand and unlike any Marathi film till date. The costume drama takes place in a state where the king organizes a contest to choose a “Court Singer” i. e. Raj Gayak. The title is very prominent and comes with lavish palace. What happens in this contest sets off an emotional drama and brings out the various shades of these characters. The film is based on a classic Marathi play written by Purushottam Darvekar. The play became immoral with its astounding and spellbinding music by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki. The film’s promo features some of the songs in the background and it is mesmerizing again.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali– a film directed by Subodh Bhave has already been in the news for its awesome music. Soor Niragas Ho by Shankar Mahadevan and Dil KI tapish by Rahul Deshpande are already becoming popular among audience. The complete album of 20 songs for this film was launched recently in a grand event. The entire cast and crew of the film was present for this music launch ceremony.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli has been a mile-stone for Marathi theatre. The play was written by Purushottam Darvekar and its immortal music was composed by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki. Actor-director Subodh Bhave has turned this play into a feature film. The film stars Sachin, Amruta Khanvilkar, Subodh Bhave, Sakshi Tanvar, Mrunmayee Deshpande and Shankar Mahadevan in leading roles.

Subodh Bhave said on this occasion, “Though this film is based on the play, this is a new approach and should not be compared to the original. Along with the songs from the play, the film also has some new songs. I am sure people will love these songs equally”

Shankar Mahadevan commented that he is emotionally involved in this project due to its music. “I have always been passionate about Marathi Sangeet natak. It was a challenge for me to compose music for this film, which will be having songs composed by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki as well. The soul of these songs is spirituality of classical music. Maintaining that spirituality throughout the film was a herculean task for us.”

Ehsaan Noorani, another composer for the music has expressed that even today’s generation will love this Indian Classical music. “This is our first film where we have composed classical music. Our love and passion for classical music has made us to work really hard on this project.”

The album features twenty songs and singers include eminent names like Mahesh Kale- disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Bollywood singers Arijit Singh, Divya Kumar, Sawani Shende. Highlight of the album are the voices of Rahul Deshpande- grandson of Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande and renowned classical singer and Shankar Mahadevan. The lyrics of this film have been penned by Prakash Kapadiya, Sameer Samant, Mangesh Kangne, and Mandar Cholkar.
The film will release on 12 November all over Maharashtra.
