]]>Quick Viewpoint: ‘Aani Kay Hava’ is solely dependent on it’s two actors (there’s almost no one else) and the chemistry between them. While it stumbles upon a little in the beginning it still gives us some heartfelt and fun moments to cherish.
What Works?
What Fails?
Final Verdict: Director Varun Narvekar has explored the new medium effectively and we need to realize that this seems more like a trial! We surely should anticipate more quality work in Marathi through this medium.

]]>The post Pimpal Review: A Cathartic Love Letter to Loneliness appeared first on MarathiStars.
]]>Gajendra Ahire directorial ‘Pimpal’ is one of his rare movies that understands the power of minimalism & inhibits it in & out. Running around one & a half hours, ‘Pimpal’ has a very specific world & an organic structure that doesn’t follow any norms of conventional storytelling usually seen in our films.
Dilip Prabhawalkar plays an old retired man living alone with some assistance from his cook (Kishore Kadam) & his doctor (Priya Bapat). The actual people in his life are probably only these two! But in a virtual world, he is connected to his two sons & their family including grandsons & a granddaughter almost on daily basis. His sons, daughters-in-law & grandchildren all of them seem genuinely interested in the old man through their regular video chats.
There are no distinct caricaturish features assigned to this old man, which makes him more believable! Even Priya Bapat’s character isn’t created like a make-believe movie character, to some extent we feel to be at distant from her real self, which again works for the film. At first, we are allowed to wonder what the film is actually about! Slowly we get into the actual soul of the film.
That soul too is minimalistic just as the approach to the overall making of the film. We have many times heard that it’s depressing for a single old person to survive once he/she loses their life partner. This film goes deep into this feeling, it’s not depressing, neither is it pleasant. It’s a bit of both! It’s a lot like being in love! A bittersweet feeling as they call it! This loneliness is more on the sub-conscious level than in physicality. How can an old man who has a loving family eagerly waiting for his arrival be lonely? One could ask this question? That’s the point in physicality (which also includes the virtual world) he isn’t alone, but in his conscience, he misses the life he had, he misses his wife, he regrets how he couldn’t live his life at it’s fullest when she was with him!
The film doesn’t really have a strategically constructed ‘story’. It just dwells on certain real human feelings & probably the most peacefully lonesome phase in a person’s life. It uses the medium of cinema in actualizing this lonesome atmosphere & we can experience the same through our senses in a cinema hall. Provided we open up our senses & look beyond a ‘story’ & a conventional idea of ‘entertainment’.
This is Dilip Prabhawalkar’s finest performance in a long long time! You couldn’t have anyone else in his part. He is tailor-made for the role & for the film. Priya Bapat too explores a new side of her in the film! Kishore Kadam gels well in the film too. Gajendra Ahire is a passionate Marathi filmmaker who has a habit of disregarding the technical aspects of the medium many times. But here since the film had a minimalist need in every way he has managed to make the film just about perfect in every way. His biggest achievement here is that he has captured the feeling of loneliness through image, sound & the overall atmosphere he creates in the film!
In a way, it works cathartically for those who regret their life decisions & wish they could have given more time to themselves & their loved ones.
‘Pimpal’ is a must watch for those who love thought provoking simplistic films! While there are too many options in the theatres currently (including Marathi) ‘Pimpal’ is a clear stand out amongst all of them as it can give some peace of mind to the audiences in the midst of all chaos we are in right now.

]]>The post Aamhi Doghi Review: Priya Bapat & the Original Story Shine Bright! appeared first on MarathiStars.
]]>‘Aamhi Doghi’ is based on a story by writer Gauri Deshpande. Not a lengthy novel but a compact 12 page story. However the time frame of the film (& the story) is larger & covers a span of around 10-12 years. The title of the film is a bit misleading as the film is more of an individual’s journey in the crucial years of her life. ‘Savitri’ or ‘Savi’ played by Priya Bapat is that individual & also the narrator of the film. She warns us both at the beginning & at the end of the film that since she’s the narrator she would always be in the foreground by force & in the background lies her step mother ‘Amla’ or ‘Ammi’ played by Mukta Barve. This isn’t a huge issue but I must warn Mukta Barve fans that she won’t have a lot of screen time, though her character is still essentially important to the film.
Equally important is Savi’s father ‘Appa’ played by the mighty effective Kiran Karmarkar. Even the rest of the cast that includes Savi’s friends, colleagues, & her love interest are important to the story in their own little ways. Savi is unlike any female protagonists we’ve seen in Marathi cinema. She represents the independent woman of today’s age & not in a caricature-like way. In a way this is the biographical story of Savi’s life & how she groomed herself to become the independent woman of today’s age. ‘Appa’ is the opposing force in her life & he consciously groomed her to become a lot like himself. But from her teenage years Savi didn’t feel the need to let ‘Appa’ decide for her, the first moment of Savi’s journey towards attaining independence begins here, enters ‘Ammi’ Appa’s newly-wed wife only 7-8 years older than Savi, n exact opposite of Savi in every way. Savi grew up without a mother & adapted herself accordingly. Ammi meets Savi at a point where Savi isn’t searching for a mother. Savi has a best friend already! So how & why does she connect with Ammi? She does, but how & why needs to be seen in the film.
Now the problem with this first half that deals with Savi’s teenage years is that the film doesn’t bother much to create a period in which things are happening. Since the story begins with a flashback, building a period is very essential to capture the realness of the lives of those people. The visual tone of the film too remains bland throughout. The good thing is that the film gives scope to silence! It doesn’t spoon feed the audience by bombarding loud background score telling them what to feel all the time. By the end of the first half we are unconvinced about Mukta Barve’s existence in the film. But later in the second half her character returns to give the defining meaning to the film. A meaning that shapes the whole film & Savi’s conflict in a completely different way! It gives a lot of food for thought to the audiences after they leave the cinema hall.
Priya Bapat as Savi is extraordinary & extremely real. There’s an inherent softness in her that actually would go opposite to the character of Savi, but instead that softness blends in with Savi’s toughness to give a much more believable portrait of a strong independent woman! Mukta Barve would have easily been a more obvious choice to this role but Priya Bapat brings in an x-factor! Mukta Barve too shines in a role that will linger for a long time in our memory even with limited screen time. Bhushan Pradhan for the first time seemed into the skin of his character! He plays ‘Ram’ who tells Savi in their very first meet that Rahul Dravid is his idol in every way! ‘Ram’ (in another way an ideal ‘man’ or ‘husband material’) does represent ‘Rahul Dravid’ himself or should we say vice-versa!
‘Aamhi Doghi’ could have been better directed for sure but it still works beautifully. The strength of the original story & Priya Bapat’s lively ‘Savi’ makes ‘Amhi Doghi’ a must watch for all kinds of audiences especially the family audiences!

]]>The post Gachchi Review: Abhay Mahajan & Priya Bapat Excel in this Light Hearted Entertainer! appeared first on MarathiStars.
]]>Remember that iconic scene from ‘Titanic’, “You Jump I Jump”. Very instantly that film established the relation between Jack & Rose & how it’s journey would be throughout the film. ‘Gachchi’ avoids any inspiration from this perspective. It’s just two people in crisis that meet & bond as just people! Not as hero & heroine! Yet the slow & steady build-up of chemistry between ‘Shri Ram’ (Abhay Mahajan) & ‘Keerti’ (Priya Bapat) is so organic & effective.
Abhay Mahajan as Shri Ram is a hit straight from the very first frame of the film. He gets one of the most inventive introduction scenes I’ve seen in Marathi cinema. Even without him speaking a word we understand who this guy is & what his conflicts are! Shri Ram is that kind of guy who gets bullied in the school for being a good boy. He is forever a ‘Mumma’s boy’ & to add to that he also represents all traits of a typical middle class Maharashtrian! Not to forget he suffers from Diabetes too!
On the contrary Priya Bapat’s Keerti is pretty basic & doesn’t enjoy a complete arc of character development. But that probably is done for a reason to keep the mystery of the character intact. As the trailer suggests the main conflict is the same. Keerti is about to jump from the terrace of a building & accidently Shri Ram notices her & then tries to convince her to not do something like that. And yes they are total strangers. But that building is the common ground for both. I won’t reveal much about why Shri Ram is there, but let’s say it’s a crisis situation for him too, one that is very well established in the first act of the film.In this first act the senior actor Anant Jog gives a delightful performance, one of his finest! He plays a baddie, a person of power who doesn’t even forgive a rat (yes an actual rat) who bothers him in a ridiculously unique way!
One of the strongest points of ‘Gachchi’ is it’s natural flow of proceedings. It doesn’t seem like a made up plot & Keerti & Shri Ram both are people whom we care for! Even though the major portion of the film is set on a terrace, it never feels like a theatrical play. The fun of background music too contributes in making things interesting even when nothing substantial is happening, the film manages to interest us in many little things.
The performances of both Abhay & Priya are extremely natural! Priya Bapat after a long time proves that she can be completely herself on the screen & yet be the character she is playing both at the same time. Abhay Mahajan too was bating in his home conditions! If you remember Abhay Mahajan’s breakthrough role was in Hindi web series called ‘TVF Pitchers’ of ‘Mandal’. Mandal was not much different from Shri Ram except he was a cartoonish good guy, Shri Ram is more relevant in the real world.
The young director Nachiket Samant has definitely succeeded in his intentions of giving the audiences a light hearted entertainer which also lingers on a few serious notes. The one issue of the film is the way the conflicts resolve. This film has two equally important conflicts dealing with the two respective lead characters. By the end the two conflicts are intermingled & resolved without much opposition. The ease in the resolution of these conflicts makes us feel that the film has hurried a little. There’s another twist in the end which can actually be predicted earlier in the film.
Gachchi is a safe entertainer in every way. A film that can easily connect with all kinds of audiences young & old! And hence I believe it’s a perfect film to be watched with the whole family.
