व्ह्यूपॉइंट: ‘अश्लील उद्योग मित्रमंडळ’ या नावावर जाऊन जर तुम्ही अलीकडे आलेल्या मराठीतल्या काही प्रसिद्ध अडल्ट कॉमेडी सिनेमांसारखा हा हि एक सिनेमा असावा असं समजून हा सिनेमा पाहायला गेलात तर नक्कीच तुमची निराशा होऊ शकते. मात्र मराठीत नवे प्रयोग करणारे सिनेमे क्वचितच प्रदर्शित होत असतात, आणि अशा सिनेमांबद्दल तुम्हाला कुतूहल असेल तर हा सिनेमा नक्कीच पाहायला हवा!

काय जमून आलंय?

• सिनेमा सुरु झाल्याच्या १० मिनिटातच सिनेमा कुठल्या वाटेने जाणार आहे हे प्रामाणिकपणे जाहीर करतो. हि वाट एरव्हीच्या तर्कशुद्ध कथानकात असते तशी नाही. किंबहुना एरव्हीचं पारंपारिक कथानक सुद्धा इथे अस्तितवात नाही. दोन ओळीत जर हे कथानक तुम्हाला सांगितलं तर ते अगदीच बालिश आणि निरर्थक वाटेल. मात्र हा सिनेमा पाहताना कथानक दुय्यम ठरतं. सिनेमातून आपला होणारा भावनानुभव अधिक महत्वाचा आहे. या सिनेमात जर गुंग होऊ शकलो तर सिनेमा अनेकदा हसवतो आणि चांगल्या अर्थी गोंधळवून लावतो.
• ‘अब्सर्ड’ या शब्दाचा गुगल वर येणारा अर्थ ‘अनरिजनेबल’, ‘इललॉजिकल’ इत्यादी हा आहे. म्हणजेच एखादा सिनेमा ‘अब्सर्ड’ आहे असं म्हटलं तर त्यापासून तर्क जपण्याच्या अपेक्षा असू नयेत. अब्सर्डपणा एखाद्या ब्लॅक कॉमेडी किंवा सटायर पेक्षा काहीसा सारखा असला तरी वेगळा असतो. सटायरमध्ये प्रत्येक गोष्टीला विशिष्ट अर्थ असतो, अब्सर्डपणात काही गोष्टींचा अर्थ लागतो (जो प्रत्येकाचा वेगळा असू शकतो) आणि काहींचा नाही लागत. या खेळात रस निर्माण झाला तर आपलं मनोरंजन नक्कीच होतं.
• सर्व कलाकार त्यांच्या परीने त्यांना दिलेली पात्र सामर्थ्याने उभी करतात. अगदी एकाच सीनमध्ये दिसलेला कलाकारही त्याचं काम उत्तम करून जातो. हा सिनेमा बनवणारी आणि त्यात काम करणारी हि सगळी तरुण मंडळी नाटकातल्या शिस्तीत तयार झालेली असल्याने कदाचित त्यांच्या कामात नवेपण जाणवला तरी नवखेपणा अजिबात जाणवत नाही. हे दिग्दर्शक म्हणून आलोक राजवाडे याचं सर्वात मोठं यश आहे.
• सिनेमाचा मूळ विषय तरुणांच्या लैंगिक वंचितपणाशी निगडीत आहे. मात्र या विषयासोबतच एखाद्या तरुणाच्या आयुष्यात इत्तर अनेक गोंधळून टाकणाऱ्या गोष्टी घडत असतात. त्यात मिसळलेला ‘अब्सर्डपणा’ याने सिनेमाचा एकूण माहोल जो तयार होतो तो या पिढीतल्या तरुणांना रिलेट होणारा आहे असं म्हणता येईल. एखादी ‘बॅड ट्रीप’ लागते तेव्हा अवतीभवतीचं जग कसं अस्पष्ट वाटू लागतं तसा अनुभव हा सिनेमा देतो.

काय फसलंय?

• सिनेमातली मुख्य पात्र आपल्यासमोर तुकड्या तुकड्यात उभी केली जातात. त्यांच्याबद्दल सहानुभूती किंवा इत्तर काही तीव्र भावना निर्माण होतील अशी सोय या सिनेमात नाही. आणि त्कया पात्दारांच्चिया एकमेकांशी असलेली नात्तयांमध्ये सुद्धा आपण फार गुंतत नाही. हे जाणीवपूर्वक केलेलं प्रयोजन असावं पण तरी त्यामुळे त्या पात्रांच्या आयुष्यात घडणाऱ्या घटना काहीश्या दुरूनच आपण पाहत राहतो.
• सिनेमाचं कथानक ‘नॉन लिनिअर’ पद्धतीने उलगडत जातं. हे प्रयोजन खरंतर एका विशिष्ट पात्रासाठी केलेलं आहे. पण ते तसं न करता त्या पात्राचं सिनेमात असणं तुकड्या तुकड्यात जर आलं असतं आणि कथानक लिनिअर पद्तधतीने उलगडललं असतं तर अधिक गुंतवणूक प्रेक्षकांची झाली असती आणि शेवटाला जेव्हा ते पात्र मुख्य घटनाक्रमात आणलं जातं तेव्हा ते जबरदस्तीने आणलं आहे असं वाटलं नसतं.
• वरच्या मुद्द्याला धरूनच, अखेर जबरदस्तीने त्या पात्राचं येणं खरंतर सामाजिक संदेश थेट पद्धतीने देता यावा यासाठी केलेलं प्रयोजन आहे. साधारणतः एखद्या ‘अब्सर्ड’ सिनेमात समाजिक संदेश दिला जाणं अपेक्षित नसतं, मात्र तो देऊच नये असाही नियम नाही. तो कसा द्यावा या बद्दल नक्कीच चर्चा होऊ शकते. इथे तो अधिक चातुर्याने देता आला असता जो सिनेमा संपल्यावर आपल्याला विचार करायला लावील.

फायनल व्हर्डीक्ट: पारंपारिक कथानकाच्या पलीकडे कथनक झेलू शकणारी रसिक मंडळी आपल्याकडे कमी प्रमाणात का होईना नक्कीच आहेत. जगभरातला सिनेमा पाहताना आपल्या भाषेत आपल्या तरुण कलाकारांनी बनवलेला हा प्रायोगिक सिनेमा आपण नक्कीच एकदा तरी पाहायला हवा!

Film Medium Spicy that promises to spin a web around urban relationships is surely building an exciting ensemble in its journey. The film is already looking like one of the biggest ensembles of the year boasting of actors like Lalit Prabhakar, Sai Tamhankar and Parna Pethe in lead roles along with Sagar Deshmukh, veteran actors, Neena Kulkarni and Ravindra Mankani supporting the main cast. Actor Sagar Deshmukh known for Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Bhaai – Vyakti Ki Valli’ and Hindi film ‘Hunterr’ has joined the cast of Mohit Takalkar’s ‘Medium Spicy’. The film produced by Vidhi Kasliwal of Landmarc Films also stars Sai Tamhankar, Lalit Prabhakar and Parna Pethe.

This is the fourth film that Sagar is doing with Sai Tamhankar after Hunterrr, YZ and Girlfriend. Confirmed Producer Vidhi, “Yes, Sagar is part of the Medium Spicy ensemble and we are so happy to have him on board. Medium Spicy has a mélange of many interesting characters and Sagar’s character is an integral part of the story.”

After playing writer P L Deshpande in Manjrekar’s film, Sagar is currently seen playing the titular role of Babasaheb Ambedkar in a TV series based on Dr. Ambedkar’s life. Medium Spicy is touted to be an urban tale of relationships and the shooting of the film is almost complete. While Mohit Takalkar is known for his award-winning works in theatre, Vidhi Kasliwal is known for producing commercial films with strong content. The coming together of these two surely makes Medium Spicy one of the films to look forward to.

Take Care Good Night Review (Marathi Movie):

There are quite a few issues with Girish Joshi’s ‘Take Care Good Night’, some of them affect the film more adversely while some don’t but altogether ‘Take Care Good Night’ is a good film that deals with modern day parenting & the world of cyber crime.

Our recent films involving youth have made genuine efforts to figure out how exactly should we portray teenage-early 20s youth in our films. The communication gap between these youth & their parents has been a common theme of some recent Marathi films & successfully these films have managed to make their points. Take Care Good Night too belongs to this type. It succeeds in cracking the ‘gap’ part & the perspective of the parents but when it comes figuring out the youth, it only scratches the surface & nothing from beneath comes out.

The film builds up the conflict very effectively (even with the errors) in the first half & continues even better in the beginning of the second half, but at a sudden point we are welcomed by some interesting humour. We don’t mind it. Mahesh Manjrekar as the cyber cell cop is adorable from the word go & the tongue & cheek humour goes well with his character. The problem arises when the film itself deals with the conflict in a casual manner disregarding the seriousness it maintained from the beginning. This sudden change of tone & the abrupt conflict resolution affects the overall film adversely. The well known ‘second half syndrome’ most of the times concerns the conflict resolution as it does in this case.

However there are lots of things that work in favour of the film & are new to our audiences. The film has great potential to work with the modern day urban families as it will be extremely relatable, both from the lifestyle, cultural identification factor to the idea of a sudden financial crisis. The casualness or ease with which the conflict is resolved & the way it is looked at in hindsight by the characters harms the film. If that issue wasn’t there ‘Take Care Good Night’ could have been one of the must watch Marathi films of the year.

Girish Joshi is one of the seasoned & respected Marathi writers around. His direction too is smooth. There was certainly more scope to portray the youth characters in more depth & breaking the shackles that they are put in usually by our films. The performances are fine from the ensemble cast. After having a terrific 2017, Sachin Khedekar has created an aura around him of being exceptionally good & subtly perfect. This performance might not stand out as one of his bests but still he is very good. In the beginning we don’t find his performance believable but quickly he convinces us that this person exists. Irawati Harshe has a lot of screen time but doesn’t really get moments to shine, her character remains slightly lesser important. Mahesh Manjrekar & Perna Pethe stand out as the real performers who impress! Manjrekar was last seen as a cop in ‘Rege’, here he is equally effective yet completely different! Adinath Kothare too fits the character & does good job.

Overall:

‘Take Care Good Night’ definitely deserves one watch from our audiences most importantly for understanding what the film has to say. Today’s parents have to understand the need of communication & so does today’s youth & of course for the cyber crime issue.

Faster Fene Marathi Movie Review:

The thing with detective characters like Sherlock Holmes, Byomkesh Bakshi & even Jagga Jasoos is that their world is distinctly different from our existing world. In case of ‘Faster Fene’ that isn’t the case. The film is set in today’s Pune. So that avoids comparison with all recent detective films from all over the world. FaFe’s strongest point is its compactness & the uncompromising decisions that the makers have taken. The film doesn’t have a single song or any sub track. The focus with which Kshitij Patwardhan has crafted the screenplay is indeed admirable.

However the plot points of the film are not completely error free. Because of the focus & compactness the film becomes a straightforward duel between our hero Fafe (Amey Wagh) & our villain Appa (Girish Kulkarni). Throughout the runtime of the film, Appa is this larger than life villain whose mere presence in the frame makes everything darker, fun. A villain is always made by his/her dialogues & Appa too has a plenty of lines that can erupt whistles & claps in the theatres. Maybe we weren’t supposed to but we are on Appa’s side. The error here is that by the climax of the film, almost abruptly FaFe makes a fool out of Appa.

Earlier one instance in the film did remind me of the Joker-Batman relationship. Appa too is a Joker like figure, who is ahead of FaFe by at least a single step. But the way FaFe catches him & gets ahead of him isn’t that convincing. The film could’ve chosen a little different path than Fafe himself explaining everything he did to catch Appa. Another minor error is that since there isn’t a sub track, the other characters Aboli (Perna Pethe), B.R. Bhagwat (Dilip Prabhawalkar), Bhu Bhu (Shubham More) don’t have any personal motives other than helping out FaFe who is principally right.

Having said all that ‘Faster Fene’ is still a very important film. One because of the way it uses contemporary technology of social media, & the internet. It truly belongs to today’s times. It also suggests us that even a normal person like us can investigate if we are passionate about it. This co-relation of fantasy & reality has never been seen before in Marathi. And then the actual subject matter of the film. I won’t reveal much, but I’ll say that it explores the most relevant social issue of today’s youth, education! Previously a film like ‘Shikshanachya Aaycha Gho’ tried a bit to address the issue on a surface level, but in case of ‘FaFe’ never does the film directly takes up the issue. It is bothered about its own plot, yet through the journey we are introduced & enlightened by many shocking realties of the education ‘Business’. Here too Appa doesn’t remain just a filmy villain with masterful dialogues.

Almost all of these positives should first be credited to the writer of the film, Kshitij Patwardhan. Followed by the director Aditya Sarpotdar & the whole cast of the film. Even the background score is an important character in the film especially because there are no songs. The editing, cinematography too contributes towards making ‘FaFe’ a truly memorable experience.

Amey Wagh as FaFe is perfectly casted & he does it with his usual mastery. In fact every single character whether it is lengthwise small like Siddharth Jadhav’s Reverse King (A Rickshaw driver who drives his Rickshaw in reverse) & Shrikant Yadav’s inspector, or the character of the original writer of ‘Faster Fene’, B. R. Bhagwat (Dilip Prabhawalkar in top form), all of them are perfect in their roles. But one man (& his character) still stands distinctly above all of them, & that is Girish Kulkarni as Appa. He is the closest Marathi cinema has ever been to a villain of Joker’s stature.

Overall:

‘Faster Fene’ takes commercial entertainment to a different level, the film is aesthetically made without a single compromise & yet it has everything that can interest audiences of all kind & all ages.

B.R. Bhagwat’s Faster Fene books have inspired & entertained a generation of kids. Those kids must be parents now. And through this film those parents can in a way pass on their love for ‘FaFe’ to their kids. Both parents & kids would associate with Faster Fene in their own ways.

Isn’t Diwali vacation the best time to watch films at theatres! Especially a film like ‘Faster Fene’ which can so easily match everyone’s taste in the family & everyone could enjoy it with each other’s company.

Though B.R. Bhagwat’s ‘Faster Fene’ was written long back in the 70s & 80s, this film isn’t set in that time. This film is set in today’s modern world where technology is an inseparable part of our lives. Writer Kshitij Patwardhan who has given many unique films to Marathi cinema in very less time has designed this whole new setting for ‘Faster Fene’. The city of Pune, the character of the original writer B.R.Bhagwat all of it projects a newer & modern day version of ‘FaFe’.
