Sai Tamhankar & Jitendra Joshi are two of Marathi’s leading film actors. They both have a truly diverse body of work. In Duniyadari they were seen sharing the screen but Jitu played a villain in that film. Many of us would have since hoped that they would star together in a different film.

Now soon they’ll be starring together in an upcoming Marathi film which was recently announced by director Nikhil Mahajan the maker of ‘Pune 52‘ & ‘Baji‘. This film is written by ‘YZ’ fame actor Sagar Deshmukh & Nikhil himself.

Both Sai & Jitu have worked with Nikhil Mahajan previously. Sai starred in a path breaking role in Nikhil’s debut film ‘Pune 52’. Whereas Jitu was seen playing ‘Martand’, a truly gruesome villain in Nikhil’s Superhero film ‘Baji’.

This yet untitled film will be produced by Akshay Bardapurkar & Nikhil Mahajan’s brother-in-law producer Suhrud Godbole. We wish all the very best to Nikhil Mahajan & his team for the film.

Pune 52, a new-noir film in Marathi has become a cult film since its release. Nikhil Mahajan, the director of this film recently announced on social media that the team is working on a sequel of this film.

Pune 52 was released in 2013 and starred National Award winning actors Girish Kulkarni, Sonali Kulkarni and Sai Tamhankar in the leading roles. Though the film could not do wonders on the Box Office, it gathered critical acclaim and cult fan-following. Girish had also produced this movie and also written dialogues for this film. This was a debut directorial venture for Nikhil Mahajan who later directed Baji- a superhero film. It will be interesting to see what topic this team will decide for the sequel for Pune 52.

Pune 52 was a story of a private detective set on the backdrop of early 90s in the city of Pune. The film was set in 90s when liberalization has changed not only economic policies but day-today lives for Indians. The film tried to capture this increasing consumerism and loss of pre-liberalization values from the society through this enthralling narrative.

The star cast and the title for this film has not yet been announced. We will keep you updated with some more news about this sequel.

Review:

Nikhil Mahajan’s Baji achieves a rare feat of being a powerful action saga narrated and crafted in an artistic way. It is a benchmark of sorts for Marathi cinema when it comes to presenting a story. However, the film doesn’t rise as much as you expect after a brilliant first half due to various reasons. But there is enough in Baji for the masses to savor it.

Baji is based in the village of Shrigangpur, where Chidu (Shreyas Talpade) lives a simple life with his mother. Chidu is honest but lags behind in intelligence and bravery. This is the reason why he doesn’t find acceptance from the girl he is madly in love with – his childhood friend Gauri (Amruta Khanvilkar). The village is also known because of the savior Baji, who is believed to exist decades ago.

But there are some like Chidu who don’t believe such tales. But Gauri is a firm believer in Baji as the hero had saved her life during her childhood. She has been in love with Baji ever since and is still waiting for him. Chidu is eager to be her Baji but will he succeed? Meanwhile, Martand (Jitendra Joshi), a harmless villager, turns into a greedy devil when he comes to know that tons of gold lies underneath the land of Shrirangpur.

Baji is a rare example of a close to three hour movie that doesn’t force you to look at the clock even once. As far as the first half is concerned, the fascinating and intriguing storyline, creative narration and Mahajan’s mature handling of the subject leave you super-impressed! The shadow fighting sequence is a sheer pleasure and it deserves special mention. At this point itself you realize the film is an achievement for Marathi cinema.

But alas, things aren’t so similar in the second half. Although it continues to be a well-shot entertaining affair till the end, it is the twist that plays spoilsport. After such an out-of-the-box first half, you really don’t expect the story to tread on the age old, tried-and-tested formula lines, but this is exactly what happens. In fact, the basic plot is almost the same as that of a Marathi film released not-so-long-ago, which itself was a mish-mash of a number of Hindi films.

Vasu Rane’s camerawork plays a large role in making Baji look like an international product. Be in the picturesque locales of Konkan or the high octane action sequences, he excels throughout. The background score and editing also make sure the final product turns out to be technically impressive. Atif Afzal joins the party too with well composed tracks, from which the title song is the best of all.

The film will also be remembered for its action and stunts, especially the train sequence. However, the use of a huge hammer to beat up could have been avoided. Such visuals can’t be digested by a large section of the audience since the film is aimed at people of all age groups.

Coming to the performances, this film required Shreyas Talpade to give his best performance till date and he does that. This act also adds on to his versatility since he manages to excel even in this genre. Jitendra Joshi matches up to him with an excellent, powerful villainous act. This will surely be one of his most talked about act always.

Amruta Khanvilkar too displays her talent playing a tough village belle. Actors playing Chidu’s friend and mother too play their parts well. Nagraj Manjule (director of Fandry) scores in a cameo.

Overall:

Baji is an entertainer worth your time and money. It also ensures Nikhil Mahajan to be a lookout for the future. With the tremendous hype and its commercial nature, it is most likely to be a box office success.

1. Shreyas Talpade. This guy can bring magic on the screen. After performing some fabulous roles in Marathi and Hindi films, Shreyas is back as Baji– First Marathi Superhero. He is one of the rarest actors in Marathi who can act very well, and look breathtakingly handsome on screen. Shreyas will be seen as a superhero in this film, so expect some good action scenes, emotional scenes and romance from this super-talented hero.

2. Nikhil Mahajan has earlier directed Pune 52. Though the film was not very successful on Box office, critics had loved this film. This time Nikhil is back with Baji, a superhero film. Hollywood has loved its superheroes. Bollywood has started this trend with Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish. However, for Marathi films, this is a big budget super hero film. Audience can expect a roller coaster ride of entertainment from Baji for sure.

3. Stunt Silva, a name known for fantastic action sequences has done stunts for Baji. Stunt Silva has earlier done thrillers like 3, Thalaiva, Jilla in Tamil. He has also done stunts for Malayalam and Telugu movies. Baji will be his first Marathi film. The film has some unusual fight sequences such as shadow fighting. It will be great to watch such stunts in Marathi.

4. Glamour. Amruta Khanvilkar will be seen in this film sans her diva image. She has not used any make up for this film. Although looking at promos and songs, one can definitely say this girl knows how to look glamorous even without makeup. Also, Shruti Marathe’s item number “Masoli” has added glamour quotient of the film. The film is rumoured to have some cameos by other actresses as well.

5. Jitendra Joshi. What can we say more about this actor! Be it serious, comic or villainous roles, he knows how to deliver. His penchant for role of baddies has given us Duniyadari. Now he is ready to take up against our Superhero Baji. Jitu has shaved his head, puffed his muscles and done many other things to get this Supervillain. Martand looks not only bad, but very very bad in the promos. Audience will be in treat to watch these two talented actors against each other.

Shreyas Talpade-starrer Marathi film “Baji“, a superhero entertainer, will feature a unique shadow fight sequence.

In order to make the scene look interesting, action directors Stunt Silva and Nikhil Mahajan came up with the idea of shadow fighting. The scenes are shot in such a way that the action is showcased via shadows.
Though the whole sequence was difficult to shoot, the way it was executed is something which will pique the audiences’ interest.

Shreyas is all praise for the act.

“When Stunt Silva and Nikhil Mahajan told me about the idea of shadow fighting, I was very excited and it was something which I have never done before and was challenging. In order to get the sequence correct, we had done intense training not only practising shadow fighting but also my body posture, my stance and sword training,” Shreyas said in a statement.

The film boasts some never before seen action sequences. All the stunts in the film have been performed by Shreyas himself.

Baji, the lead character, is an action-adventure laced superhero-vigilante who takes it upon himself to protect the common man against oppression and injustice in this small village of Shrirangpur.

Shreyas Talpade’s 2015’s most anticipated film ‘Baji‘ is creating buzz even while the shooting is going on. Currently the shoot is in progress at picturesque Konkan locales. It is slated to release on 6th February 2015. However, the social media is already buzzing about its promotion and audience is eagerly awaiting for the first Marathi Superhero.

Baji is an action-adventure-romance laced superhero vigilante film that transcends both folklore and present day. It is based on the legend of a man who took upon himself to protect the common man against oppression and injustice. His sword, his bow-arrow and his white stallionlive on to define him.

Baji marks Shreyas’s comeback into Marathi cinema after a gap of 7 years. The Film also has Jitendra Joshi as the antagonist and Amruta Khanvilkar as the female lead. Atul Kulkarni has been roped in to play Prataprao Gujar in a Marathi historical action film titled “Saat”.

“Saat” is based on true events in the life of Shivaji Maharaj. It encapsulates the inspiring, true story of Prataprao Gujar, the commander-in-chief of Shivaji’s army and his six trusted men who fought valiantly for their king and pride. Commenting on the role, Atul said in a statement: “I’ve always loved doing roles which frighten me as to how am I going to do it! ‘Natarang’ for example.

I must confess that this role and script of ‘Saat’ have challenged me the most so far.” Written by Nikhil Mahajan, “Saat” will be directed by Ashish Bende. DAR Motion Pictures, IME Motion Pictures and Blue Drop Films have joined hands to co-produce the movie, which marks the second co-production between the three production houses.

They first produced Shreyas Talpade-starrer “Baji”. Commenting on behalf of the co-producers, Vivek Rangachari of DAR Motion Pictures, said: “From the time we first started discussing ‘Baji’, we were very sure that we wanted to work on an epic project of heroic proportions in Marathi.”

“Some of the best subjects in this space come from Shivaji Maharaj and his era, without question. However, since some really excellent work has already been done on Shivaji Maharaj, we had to ensure that when we did decide to do

something it had to be something that was befitting of the epicness, yet at the same time had never been attempted on the big screen.” “‘Saat’ was a perfect fit and we absolutely had no hesitation in green lighting the project.”
