2017 has been a different year! Different because the whole Film industry has seen extreme peak points with success of Bahubali 2 & Dangal! The other film industries with ease proved that their films are full proof from all kinds of social political changes that are happening in our country. Sadly that’s not the case with Marathi cinema. Our films have been affected by these changes for sure. Apart from a few exceptions our films haven’t really worked on the box office. But the better news is that our audiences have still backed few good works that came out in 2017 so far, in the first half.

5. Braveheart

Though Braveheart was not technically perfect, it had a powerful soul in it’s story. The real life inspiring story of Nikhil Karkhanis who fights a deadly disease without losing hope or losing his love for life! The strongest aspect of Braveheart was Sangram Samel’s performance as Nikhil & the chemistry he shared with his father portrayed by Arun Nalawade.

4. Chi Va Chi Sau Ka

Romcom as a genre has been lately been explored too often by Marathi cinema. But Paresh Mokashi and co-writer Madhugandha Kulkarni give this love story a fresh spin by incorporating a unique twist in the tale. Lalit Prabahakar and Mrunmayee Godbole share a warm chemistry that makes their characters and performances even more relatable.

3. Ti Saddhya Kay Karte

Satish Rajwade’s Ti Saddhya Kay Karte gave a solid beginning to 2017 for Marathi cinema. A unique rom com that didn’t follow any set pattern. Ankush Chaudhari’s performance both as an actor & narrator lifted the whole calibre of the film. Though debutants Aarya Ambekar & Abhinay Berde could have been better the film still entertained us thoroughly. Not to forget a refreshing performance by Tejashri Pradhan.

2. Muramba

Another fantastic take on the Rom Com genre. But debutant director Varun Narvekar’s Muramba was beyond just that. It was a family drama set in today’s time, today’s sensibilities. Varun proved that a good script, systematic approach to the craft & using the aesthetics of cinema visually & through music is enough for the audiences to love your film. A huge budget is not a necessity. The film relied equally on the shoulders of the cast Amey Wagh, Mithila Palkar, Sachin Khedekar & Chinmayee Sumeet who gave literally perfect performances.

1. Ringan

The best Marathi film of 2017 so far & probably the best Marathi film in recent years of Marathi cinema. Ringan’s strongest aspect was it’s simplicity. In the plot, in the treatment & in the performances. Shashank Shende & the little Sahil Joshi as father & son showed heartfelt chemistry. Director Makarand Mane’s clarity of his intentions can also be credited in the success of Ringan. The holy city of Pandharpur has a connect with us & Ringan reinstated our belief in it & strengthened the positivity within us.

Muramba Marathi Movie Review :

The trailer & the whole promotional strategy of ‘Muramba’ involved all the leading four actors/characters. And the film has so beautifully justified this involvement. It’s not simply a modern day rom-com, but also a modern take on ‘family drama’ in the most fun way. A basic connective conversation is absolutely essential for these two generations two come on the same page. Varun Narvekar, the director of this film presents an interesting view point that maybe our elder generation has skillfully adapted to changed times, but it’s the younger generation who are struggling to strike the right balance to reach out to their elders.

The film’s story happens over the duration of a day & of course the story keeps going back & forth through flashbacks. Aalok (Amey Wagh) & Indu (MIthila Palkar) have ended their 3 year relationship, at a point where both families where involved & the engagement date was about to be decided soon. The first half takes a lot of time that lets us settle into what Aalok is going through. His equations with his mother & father are slowly unveiled. The essence of this calmness can also be related to the overall privileged life that Aalok is living. He belongs to a decent upper class family & his survival isn’t dependent on whether he works or not.

Aalok though has always been a very bright student! An MBA by education, but he hasn’t yet decided upon what exactly is it that he wants to do. On the contrary Indu is a workaholic (though her family background is similar). She works in a travel company & has been considering the thought to shift to Kerala for a year. This & many other little reasons are responsible for the friction that was caused between Aalok & Indu.

So yes there’s a plot, a pretty compact & specific, but the strongest aspect of Muramba is something else. It’s the inter-connected bonds between Aalok & his parents (Sachin Khedekar & Chinmayee Sumeet) & how easily they have assimilated Indu into this family.

Director Varun Narvekar keeps on saying a bit of truth here & there, one that resonates with today’s idea of liberalism & gender equality. Aalok’s inner conflict too can be associated to a similar commentary. But here’s where a flaw occurs. This inner conflict of Aalok lacks a logical explanation. It appears a bit superficial, done for the sake of the ultimate showdown, and left unresolved once the greater point is made.

However, the good part is that the ultimate showdown works beautifully! The performances obviously are also responsible for the overall elevation of the film’s impact on the viewers. Amey Wagh has outdone himself & our idea of how talented he is! He is truly magical! Sachin Khedekar has given one of the most important performances of his whole career!

Mithila Palkar is as natural as a fresh monsoon breeze, and Chinmayee Sumeet’s performance (& the character) is where the heart of Muramba truly lies!

The cinematography, editing, sound design & back ground score complement each other & the rest of the aspects in the film. Especially the cinematography, since the film is compact & was shot at very limited locations. The few songs that are in the film or in the album are truly as fresh & soulful as the film.  

Yes the film will break your idea of a “family film” in some situations/scenes. But it’s time we adapt accordingly. Moreover Marathi cinema needs a hit as immediate as possible, & there can’t be a better film than Muramba at this stage which deserves the glory.

Watch Muramba with your “special” loved ones or family members & if possible both together!

‘Muramba’ starring Amey Wagh, Mithila Palkar, Sachin Khedekar & Chinmayee Sumeet seems to be a film that’ll finally give a refreshing perspective about today’s youth & their relationships. Recently three different teasers of the film were released on social media. All of these teasers tell us one particular aspect that this film is about modern relationships & how our parents play a vital role in it.

In the first teaser we meet Alok (Amey) who’s missing his girlfriend (probably ex-girlfriend) Indu (Mithila). His parents want to discuss about the same but Alok doesn’t seem to be in a mood for that.

In the exclusive ‘Baba Teaser’ we are introduced to the father as the oldest friend! This little teaser truly tells us about how times have changed & the father in our films is changing too.

Then in the ‘Aai Teaser’ we meet a mother who is more traditional & caring for her son. However, here too the mother is introduced to us as our very first female friend.

A Teaser is hardly a minute long. A good film can always impress & catch our attention in that little time. Amey Wagh & Mithila Palkar starrer ‘Muramba’ succeeds in catching our attention. The teaser titled ‘Introducing Alok and Indu’ literally introduces us in a subtle, beautiful way.

Though it’s difficult to say a lot about their characters from the teaser, still we feel the film will display sensibilities of today’s generation quite aptly. Yes Indu & Alok also appear to be in love, but there’s a hint or two in the teaser (the phone call & the sizzler) that says more about the conflict that might arise in between the characters.

The sizzler shot suggests Alok is a person who enjoys even the most little moments of life & the phone call suggests Indu is more practical! This much reading between the lines is enough at this stage, but we are sure this Varun Narvekar directorial film will have plenty to be read between the lines!
