Cast: Kay Kay Menon, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Milind Phatak, Abhijeet Amkar, Harshita Sohal, Shalva Kinjavadekar & Shubhvi Gupte

Director: Lokesh Gupte

Quick Viewpoint: ‘Ek Sangaychay…Unsaid Harmony’ wastes an important issue by over hammering of the ‘message’.

What Works?

  • Kay Kay Menon! Though not an extraordinary character, he still manages to interest us in his character by is performance.
  • The seriousness of the topic that parents need to communicate with their children.
  • Technically the film is neat. Lokesh Gupte as a first time director does a decent job as a director (though not as a writer).

What Fails?

  • Literally, nothing happens in the second half! The film only deals with the aftermath of a big incident that has happened in the first half. None of it feels important on a narrative level!
  • The whole screenplay has many logical errors. From the very backdrop of a strict father who is an inspector to his relationship with his 20 something kid, all of it feels distant from reality.
  • The film deals with an important subject like youth suicides but fails at understanding the issue in depth. It just doesn’t understand how a planned suicide is different from a momentary action!
  • The second half keeps stressing on the message repeatedly even when the message is incomplete & the context of the situation is something else.
  • Kay Kay Menon’s character is expected to get some sympathy from the viewers & has been projected in the film similarly. But while watching the film it is impossible to feel any sympathy for him as the audience only see him as a stupid over egoistic father.

Final Verdict: ‘Ek Sangaychay…Unsaid Harmony’ doesn’t reach any harmony on the screenplay level. But feels like an empty film that is stretched to an extent where it has the soul itself.

Rating: 2/5

Bucket List Movie Review:

The one-liner for Bucket List would appear considerably interesting on paper. The film even achieves some of it’s ‘fun’ aspect in the first half. But even that has a problem of perspective. The whole idea needed to be looked as a comedy, a true blue comedy that could only get slightly serious in the climax. Instead ‘Bucket List’ appears confused about it’s perspective. It unnecessary creates drama out of situations that are outright illogical in the narrative. It even underplays the humorous moments to keep the film family friendly.

Madhuri Dixit Bucket List

The first half starts off on a terrific note, where we didn’t expect this film to make Madhuri a true believable middle aged housewife. We also notice there’s a slight cutely dumb side to her (one that is never seen again). I was reminded of Sai Tamhankar’s character from ‘YZ’. Imagined that in this scheme of things! But Madhura (Madhuri Dixit Nene) is hardly a complete character on her own. She is a roughly created generalized version of a middle aged house wife from a upper middle class family.

As we know the narrative of the film is about Madhura completing a ‘Bucket List’, a Bucket list that belonged to a teenage girl who lost her life before completing her 21st birthday. Why Madhura is supposed to take this responsibility on herself? From the promotions of the film I realized the Bucket List team doesn’t want the audience to know about it, so I won’t reveal. But I would say whatever the reason is it makes sense as also it’s a part of the basic idea which is interesting on it’s own.

Madhuri Dixit Sumeet Raghvan Bucket List

However the journey of the completion of this Bucket List doesn’t bring about any substantial change in Madhura’s life. She does a number of things, by the end she says she has learned so much & has changed so much, but this change is only present in the dialogues not in the actual screenplay. One major reason for this error is that since the film didn’t really figure out Madhura’s character before the Bucket List entering her life the changes too are difficult to incorporate!

The second half as major issues throughout, almost every dramatic moment feels forced & which are unnecessarily added to have a conflict in the story. The climax is shockingly absurd! The fast paced, high energy party song ‘Houn Jau Dya’ kills the entire novelty of the subject brutally! The song just didn’t belong to the film. Why would parents of a dead 20 year old celebrate her birthday with such over the top excitement just after 6 months from her death? The birthday party makes sense but the excitement is just mindlessly absurd.

Madhuri Dixit Bucket List Marathi Movie

But the reason I have still rated the film decently is the way it created an interesting give & take between today’s younger generation & the generation of their parents. Madhura too is backed by a few friends of the deceased teenager. Madhura also has few interesting & relatable moments with her own teenage daughter. Deceased teengaer’s twin brother played by Sumedh Mudgalkar too suffers from the unnecessary dramatic angle of the film, or else he could have made a better connect with the audiences, also because he is a good performer.

Finally talking about Madhuri’s performance! Her Marathi isn’t a problem, neither is her overall performance, but then she doesn’t save an average film. A better actress in this part could have surely elevated the overall film as there were many moments for the character to shine above the mediocre script. I was reminded of Sridevi’s heart warming performance from ‘English Vinglish’ & how she literally appeared ‘Shashi Godbole’ in & out.

Overall:

Bucket List’s biggest problem is the directorial decision making, from the tone of the film to the overall flow of the screenplay, the inclusion of irrelevant drama & the absurd climax. Yet for audiences who are fans of Madhuri Dixit, the film would be a pleasing experience overall.

Dashkriya Marathi Movie Review:

Dashkriya starts off on a highly dramatic ‘Dashkriya’ (10th Day Ritual of an deceased person) scene establishing Manoj Joshi as ‘Keshav Bhat’, an outright villain. Throughout the film no matter what the situations are ‘Keshav Bhat’ has been strictly projected as a villain, also in situations where he clearly classifies as ‘victim’. I agree that such scenes are few, but the point is that this film just doesn’t believe in ‘grey’. It feels to have a preconceived understanding of everything & has ruthlessly sorted the ‘black’ & ‘white’.

Another clear bifurcation is evident in the very next song sequence that follows the ‘dramatic’ opening scene. It’s the usual fun song for kids, alike countless others seen before in other films. There is nothing wrong with the song, but it’s placement itself is so baffling to the audience. It’s like you have to instantly change your state of the mind. And then this same exercise needs to be continued throughout the runtime! It’s like watching two different films at the same time, scene by scene alternatingly! One that follows the opening ‘drama’ & the other that is a ‘slice of life’ comedy! A better story teller could’ve chosen neither of the two & would have preferred a ‘dark satire’ instead!

ARYA ADHAV_DILIP PRABHAVALKAR_VINAYAK GHADIGAONKAR - DashkriyaSo is it just the treatment where ‘Dashkriya’ baffles, disappoints? No! The basic story itself is baffling. There are just too many things happening! ‘Paithan’ is the place where this story is set. Most of the men (Milind Shinde, Nandkishor Choughule & Santosh Mayekar) among the important characters are drunkards. A socially relevant subject is included here, that has nothing to do with the main conflict. Now these drunkards are a part of every social, religious activity in the village. They almost appear normal when they are sober. So in a way this makes us feel that everything’s fine with their lives. And hence the whole point of alcoholism becomes weak.

Then what is the main conflict? There are two plots in my observation one is a little boy’s story & another is Keshav Bhat’s story. This little boy ‘Bhanya’ (belonging to a lower caste) skips school & works on the river banks of ‘Paithan’ where tourists come to perform ‘Dashkriya’ for their closed deceased ones. The god men who perform these rituals belong to a specific sub-caste of ‘Kirvant’. Now Bhanya works with them as a apprentice of sort, there’s another weaker ‘Kirvant’ played by Milind Phatak with whom Bhanya has a better connect than with the powerful ‘Keshav Bhat’. Then there’s an elderly righteous man ‘Savkar’ played by Dilip Prabhawalkar. Though ‘Savkar’ has less to do directly throughout the film, he seems to be important only because he is played by Dilip Prabhawalkar, a veteran!

MANOJ JOSHI_MILIND PHATAK_PRAFULLA GHAG - DashkriyaMany tourists that come to ‘Paithan’ are supposedly feeling exploited by ‘Keshav Bhat’. In a cameo Jaywant Wadkar plays a tourist & speaks how these god men are asking too much money. The thing is we never see what actually happened. We just see Wadkar confronting Savkar about it.

Bhanya’s mother is trying her best to make ends meet, her husband (Milind Shinde) does nothing substantial. At first she scolds Bhanya for skipping school but later she seems to be happy & proud about her son who starts earning a better sum working on the river banks! This shift of perspective has never been explained! Meanwhile ‘Keshav Bhat’ & his whole sub-caste where insulted in a social gathering by Savkar. Why? Wasn’t Savkar a righteous man! Even in this situation the background score suggests that ‘Keshav Bhat’ is the baddie!

PANKAJ CHEMBURKAR_MANOJ JOSHI_DILIP PRABHAVALKAR - DashkriyaAt the end of the film, bits & pieces of the two stories are hurriedly jointed & the climax is created, a climax which actually is a lot stronger than the whole film. That makes a strong social statement! But by then we are too much exhausted by the proceedings that came before. That statement makes sense to just the climax, not to the whole film. The whole film is a jumble if we try to make interpretations about social messages or statements.

Overall:

Dashkriya is a missed opportunity. Had the film realized that the whole process is as important as the final statement, we could’ve got a more pure film. Dashkriya is polluted by a need to be commercially viable to all audiences, even at that it doesn’t succeed much.

Earlier in the year ‘Dashkriya’ Marathi movie received three important National awards Best Screenplay for Sanjay Krishnaji Patil, Best Supporting Actor for Manoj Joshi & Best Feature Film in Marathi. Now the trailer of the film is out. And it definitely lives up to all expectations.

The best part about this trailer is that it is perfectly crafted & timed. It doesn’t reveal anything from the conflict of the film, yet it gives a good idea about the whole atmosphere of the film, the story & its social context.

Sanjay Krishnaji Patil who has previously written a masterpiece like ‘Jogwa’ is back with ‘Dashkriya’ after a long time. This trailer makes us think that this film touches on a sensitive topic about class difference & religious customs & rituals. Actor Manoj Joshi who won a national award for his role in this film looks in top form. The young child actor too looks perfect for the part. It is definitely one of the most important film of this year releasing by the end of the year!
