Viewpoint: Marathi cinema has had very few but great political films over the years. Most of them have lasted the test of time and are considered classics. Moreover we as a culture are very politically inclined and find day to day political incidents fascinating and exciting with our strong opinions about it. The recent chaotic political atmosphere also fueled the same, and in between all this ‘Dhurala’ is a brilliantly crafted political film that we all deserved!

What Works? 

• Unlike many other recent Indian political films, the political canvas of ‘Dhurala’ is smaller. It’s not about state level or national level politicians but about a political family working within the boundaries of a village. But the makers of this film have proved that the stakes are equally high here! In fact since the focus remains on a family and their internal as well as external politics the film becomes very character driven and we get to know all the primary characters in & out!
• The dialogue writing of the film strikes the right balance of being slightly filmy yet extremely believable! ‘Right’ because that’s what we see politicians doing too! Dramaticness or ‘filmyness’ has become an inseparable part of our politics.
• The film gives an inside view of how a political family functions from within. How in a strange way their privilege might actually be more of a curse. We understand the ruthlessness and the ugliness of the political games they have to play to survive or go forward.
• All the lead actors get an equal opportunity to shine! Siddharth Jadhav and Sonalee Kulkarni in particular get to play characters which they had never played before and shine in them! Ankush Chaudhari matches the subtle smartness of his character perfectly and Sai Tamhankar again hits it out of the park with her extremely sensitive performance!
• Technically the film is good at all levels. But it’s the background score that stands out bright and bold! The score gives context to many simpler scenes and makes us more interested than otherwise. It’s not just the quality of the score but the timing of it that makes the difference I believe and this film has so precisely got it right!
• Eventually ‘Dhurala’ works as a basic human drama. The setting is all of a political film, but somewhere we see ourselves in the film, that is what cinema is supposed to do! It has to speak to us in a very human way beyond all of it’s outer layers!

What Fails?

• No real major flaw in this film. Except a little one, I feel many a times the film doesn’t build an atmosphere. It feels a little too focused on it’s characters alone (which is great) but visually it could have done with building scenes in such a way that we feel where exactly is it happening, and we are a part of it.

Final Verdict: Post Sairat Marathi cinema has been in search of a film that works easily with a broader audience and is also brilliantly crafted. ‘Dhurala’ has that potential in my opinion. It surely feels like a hopeful resurrection of good Marathi cinema at the box office!

Ever since the first teaser of upcoming Marathi release ‘Dhurala‘ went out the excitement among Marathi film lovers has been on the peak! After a long long time Marathi audiences are anticipating a truly exciting Marathi film! Rightfully so as the names associated to this film from writer Kshitij Patwardhan, director Sameer Vidwans to the star studded cast of the film, all of it create expectations!

While the first teaser of the film hinted us that the film is set in a village and the politics within it. The trailer of the film goes deeper into that and now the film feels more like a story set in the internal politics of a political family! We believe the audiences might be treated with two genres in one and we might see two sides of the characters through these genres!

Sai Tamhankar, Ankush Chaudhari, Amey Wagh, Sonalee Kulkarni, Prasad Oak, Siddharth Jadhav, Alka Kubal & Umesh Kamat all these actors seem very natural in the trailer of the film and ‘Dhurala’ promises to give all of them their chance to shine! Who could have thought that all these above mentioned actors could be working together in a Marathi film and that too a film which isn’t a romantic drama or a comedy but a hardcore stylistic political film! Well the director-writer pair of Sameer Vidwans-Kshitij Patwardhan along with the backing of Zee Studios has made this possible with their new film ‘Dhurala‘!

Currently in a completely chaotic world of politics in Maharashtra a film like ‘Dhurala’ makes more sense than ever! However it will be interesting to see what the pair of Vidwans-Patwardhan contribute to this genre. So far filmmakers in Marathi have mostly sticked to their comfort zones, i.e artists from Mumbai-Pune have hardly focused on rural backdrops in their films, similarly filmmakers coming from rural parts haven’t tried stories set in the urban backdrop much.

But with ‘Dhurala’ Vidwans-Patwardhan have focused on rural politics! From the teaser of the film one can make out that this will be a stylistic commercial political drama about the competition and the games people play in politics! It will be interesting to see how the audiences react to it when they are already much entertained by the current political scenario of our state! ‘Dhurala’ releases in theatres on 3rd of Jan, 2020!

‘Hirkani‘ is Prasad Oak’s second film as a director after the critically acclaimed ‘Kachcha Limbu’. The film stars Sonalee Kulkarni in & as ‘Hirkani’. A small folk tale from the ‘Swarajya’ time is coming to life through this film. The film mainly centers around a mother and her fight against all odds to protect her child.

While the trailer does make us feel that there is enough authenticity in the world built in the film. But also it keeps a lot to be desired in terms of the ‘thrill’ that is expected from a story like this. More so it feels since the basic folk tale is pretty basic there will be things added to bulk up the runtime of the film.

Moreover the quality of VFX used in the film will also contribute in the overall impact of the film. However it seems the audiences feel truly connected with the film through the trailer as one can make that out from their positive reactions to the trailer. ‘Hirkani’ releases in theatres during Diwali on 24th of October!

But with ‘Hirkani‘ actor turned director Prasad Oak has instead chosen a smaller forgotten folktale that is officially not even a chapter of history, but nevertheless has lived through word of mouth!

Starring Sonalee Kulkarni in the titular role ‘Hirkani’ this film promises to be a thrilling real-time tale of bravery! Many younger audiences of today’s generation aren’t really aware of this folktale and hence this film is important in a social way!

The teaser of the film doesn’t reveal much but gives us a glimpse of the tone of the film. The film will have a thriller, survival film tone for sure. More so we can expect the film to be technically perfect as it’s made by the director of the cult film ‘Kachcha Limbu’.
