In the history of around two decades of Marathi television very few TV serials have earned the place of being the most loved serials in Marathi ever. Star Pravah’s ‘Agnihotra’ was one such hugely loved serial. It brought together suspense thriller and family drama together about three generations in a family! It went on to become a milestone for Marathi serials!

Now Star Pravah and the mind behind Satish Rajwade who is now the programming head of Star Pravah has decided to bring the epic serial back! ‘Agnihotra 2’ will soon be ready for the audiences! Satish Rajwade believes, even after 10 years of the last episode the impact of Agnihotra is still with the audiences, which is very rare about TV serials!

Just like the original serial, ‘Agnihotra 2’ will also be written by Shrirang Godbole! Godbole is one of the most prolific writer, director & producer to work in Marathi TV and he says that ‘Agnihotra’ remains his most precious work! Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star is Mumbai’s beloved film festival that showcases the best of Indian and foreign films to the passionate film lovers of Mumbai! The festival is now in it’s 21st year! And like every year they are again screening Marathi films under their various sections!

in India Story section three Marathi films are being showcased. ‘Chivati’ directed by Rajkumar Tangade is about generations of a closely-knit, humorous community of sugarcane labourers who have been migrating yearly in search of work. ‘Y’ directed by Dr. Ajit Wadikar and starring popular actress Mukta Barve, is a collage of four different, interconnected stories that address sex-selective abortion and female foeticide. And the third film in this section being ‘A Thing of Magic’ directed by Nithin Anil which is about a struggling harmonium player, who aspires to join a local drama troupe.

In the ‘Marathi Talkies’ section three Marathi films are to be featured. ‘Dithi’, the much awaited multi-starrer film about the ‘Warkari’ sect directed by Sumitra Bhave stars the likes of Kishor Kadam, Dr. Mohan Agashe, Amruta Subhash, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Girish Kulkarni, Anjali Patil, Shashank Shende & others. The section also features ‘Bhonga’ by the national award winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil. Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Panghrun’ which is a period drama film about a widow starring Manjrekar’s daughter Sai Manjrekar will also be a part of the ‘Marathi Talkies’ section in the festival!

‘About Love’ is another Marathi film that is part of MAMI this year! A documentary film directed by Archana Phadke about the three generations of her family inside their ancestral home – the 102-year-old Phadke Building in downtown Mumbai. Mining their daily routines and rituals, ‘About Love’ deconstructs the dynamics of one eccentric household, studies its gender dynamics and brings unexpected revelations for a daughter rediscovering her family from behind the lens.

‘Smile Please‘ this Friday’s big Marathi release stars a big star cast of Mukta Barve, Lalit Prabhakar, Prasad Oak, Aditi Govitrikar and others. The film deals with a mental condition and how does a person tackle it! We chatted with Mukta Barve about the film and her role in this film!

What does ‘Smile Please’ the title of the film stand for in the context of the film?

Every actor in the film is saying it currently but I believe it’s the message of the film that needs to reach out to viewers who watch the film. These two words ‘Smile Please’ have become very redundant in our world today, when people say ‘Smile Please’ we laugh artificially for a photo! It is not just a physical action but it has to be imbibed into a person! The film believes nothing is difficult in this world! If we try happiness is achievable!

You have played many important and challenging roles in your career. What was challenging in this role of yours? 

The fun part about this role was that I didn’t have the luxury of using emotional memory of this character which I usually have! Which in fact is the base of all characters and you’ll know when you watch the film that why I couldn’t use it! And hence I had to unlearn many things as the role demanded it! Many things I learned it in a new way. It’s like you have to communicate what’s inside of you to the audiences but without the usual mediums that you have to communicate! Definitely this was a challenging role and I had to approach it a very new way!

The chemistry between you and Lalit Prabhakar is evident from the trailer. How was your experience working with him? 

It was great. I had seen his recent film ‘Anandi Gopal‘. I like his screen presence very much. He brings a lot of energy on the screen. And his character in ‘Smile Please’ brings a lot of positive energy on the screen. And as a co-actor he is always thinking about the film and the whole script. And he even has queries to ask to the director. So when I do scenes with him I feel that we travel together in this journey. He is not like an independent player who scores his 100 alone! So I enjoy the give & take while working with him.

Is Prasad Oak’s role in ‘Smile Please’ an extended cameo of sorts or a proper full fledged role? 

I had worked with him in ‘Ek Dav Dhobipachhad’. But we hadn’t worked together to this length! So yes he has a proper big role in the film! It was Vikram’s (director Vikram Phadnis) decision to not reveal much about his role in the trailer as the he wants the audiences to be surprised in theatres!

Fashion Designer turned filmmaker Vikram Phadnis is back with his second Marathi film ‘Smile Please‘ after the success of Subodh Bhave-Mukta Barve starrer ‘Hrudayantar‘.
