Braveheart Marathi Movie Review :

Braveheart is a film that’s not technically or logically flawless, but manages to strike the most essential chord, the ‘emotional’ one. 2017 hasn’t been a great year for Marathi cinema so far & Braveheart is one of those few films that the audiences should definitely give a try.

The film is based on a true story. A young man named Nikhil Karkhanis (Sangram Samel) suffers from a deadly disease of the spinal cord, with no possibilities of surviving. The scene in which the doctor reveals this sad truth to him & in his father Sacchidanand Karkhanis (Arun Nalawade) is where the film starts rising above average. Nikhil’s first reaction to this is not just shocking but extremely uplifting. He asks the doctor how many months, years he has with him. Nikhil is passionate about many little things in life from trekking, traveling to food & he wishes to complete as many dreams as he can in whatever time he has left.

However the narrative of the film reflects more on his struggle with the deadly disease that works like slow poison, affecting his legs first making them useless & slowly the entire body. Throughout this struggle there are two faithful helping hands to Nikhil, one being the company he works for ‘Tech Mahindra’ & the other & the most important his father Mr. Sacchidanand Karkhanis. Nikhil grew up under the love of his father & grandmother (Sulabha Deshpande) as his mother too died from a disease when he was 12-13 years old.

Apart from this really inspiring real struggle of Nikhil, the strongest points of this film include the performances by the two lead actors Sangram Samel & Arun Nalawade. Sangram, the debutant has truly poured his heart into the performance. Both physically & emotionally he lives Nikhil’s character. Arun Nalawade is an actor who has a tendency to go over the top, but when he doesn’t he has a great gift to make his characters human! And he did make Mr. Sacchidanand Karkhanis very much human.

Talking about flaws, ‘Braveheart’ could have avoided a clichéd approach to the character of Nikhil’s love interest played by Dhanashri Kadgaonkar. A girl who is madly in love with Nikhil & wishes to marry him disregarding his disease. But after the marriage, she changes drastically without any solid reason. She was married to Nikhil for almost four years, if they wanted the character to change so drastically they could’ve shown the transition slowly & without directly making her a vamp.

‘Tech Mahindra’ as I said earlier is an important helping hand to Nikhil, but unfortunately we never really witness Nikhil’s office routine or the reason why he is so important to the company. Another major flaw is the ever-present narrator (Atul Parchure) who contributes nothing substantial to the narrative.

Many a times some important incidents in Nikhil’s journey are simply narrated by the narrator, which should’ve been shown to the audience. Obviously there are financial constraints that could’ve made the director take these decisions.

This film is written by the ‘Ek Hazarachi Note’ fame writer ‘Shrikant Bojewar’ & his dialogues are very much important for making the emotional connect. Another refreshing aspect is the background score given by Amar Mohile. Yes it’s melodramatic but still displays a lot of craftsmanship & an intent to contribute to the film’s emotional context.

This film being produced by the actual Mr. Sachhidanand Karkhanis (real Nikhil’s father) avoids any unnecessary “commercial”, “masala” sorts of additions. Directed by a non-Marathi director Dasbabu, ‘Braveheart’ is a film that could’ve been even better if it had a bigger budget & more work on the screenplay, but nevertheless this story of a real life ‘Braveheart’ & his equally brave father manages to inspire us positively & value our lives more.

Overall:

If you love inspiring real life stories, ‘Braveheart’ is a must watch, for others too ‘Braveheart’ can surprise you emotionally!

Manus Ek Mati Marathi Movie Review :

“Oh, you could study Shakespeare and be quite elite,
And you could charm the critics and have nothing to eat,
Just slip on a banana peel, the world’s at your feet
Make ’em laugh, make ’em laugh, make ’em laugh!”

– From the Hollywood Musical “Singin’ In The Rain”

‘Manus Ek Mati’ surely made us laugh! Though unintentionally & quite ridiculously. Marathi cinema had many such wonders (read disasters) in recent times (last 2-3 months) which were competing for the ‘so bad that it’s good’ title, but most of them were simply boring. Finally we have a winner!

A decade ago, came a Marathi film titled ‘Sakka Bhau Pakka Vairi’. The film was loud, stereotypical & quite obvious. But it was a huge hit in the rural areas. There were many dying ‘touring talkies’ that were revived because of it. Why? Simply because it made a connection! Even for an ‘elite’ audience such films can have the strength to manipulate them emotionally. So the point is ‘Manus Ek Mati’ belongs to the same genre. And the genre or style is not outright waste.

The story of this film is unnecessarily told in a flashback. Baban (Ganesh Yadav) & Laxmi (Harsha Gupte) become parents to an orphan child. The child grows on to become a smart, studious, all dancing, all fighting film hero, Vijay (Siddharth Jadhav). Then he falls in love with Vidya (Ruchita Jadhav) & they get married. Now the proceedings that follow have no indications of a certain change that we see in all major characters. There’s this ever-present narrator Anna (a friend of Baban) who exists just for the sake of existing.
Later part of the film also shares resemblance to 2016’s major hit ‘Natsamrat’. A tragedy is a risky business, yes it can be loud or even theatrical in some cases but it still needs to be a decently made film. When all the basics of filmmaking are given a toss, & the whole attention is on the message & the loudness with which the message is being delivered it becomes a true disaster.

Both Siddharth Jadhav & Ganesh Yadav are good actors, but the film doesn’t allow us to ever enjoy their skills. Not just because they are made to overdo their stuff, or have got badly written characters & situations but also because the editing of the film keeps abruptly cutting almost every single scene in which we are slightly trying to invest us. The background score of ‘Manus Ek Mati’ is unbelievably loud.

If that’s not enough the film has a truly lethal item number placed as abruptly as possible within the already messed up narrative. Indra Kumar, a Bollywood hero from the 90s makes a cameo appearance (god knows why) in this song alongside another 90s icon ‘Milind Gunaji’! Certain films that are bad, know that they are bad, but ‘Manus Ek Mati’ has no idea whatsoever about how & what it’s turning out to be. And that is the sole reason it can be enjoyed for its unbounded ridiculousness.

However the biggest absurdity arrives after the film ends. Post the runtime of the film, when the credits appear, there also appears a lady (assumably the producer) who again gives the necessary ‘message’ if at all the audience failed to ‘get it’ after watching the whole film. Even then we burst into laughter.

Overall:

Manus Ek Mati’ is a film that quite disrespectfully abuses the medium of cinema & story telling. Yes the film is unintentionally funny & all, but that’s not what we want. Or do we?

Currently different subjects & content are being made in Marathi Cinema. ‘Manus Ek Maati’ is one such unique film. Set to release on 24th March, the content of this film is just as profound as the title of the film. Even if it’s true that all human beings ultimately end up being one with the mud, but what if a person’s life turns into mud while he is still alive?

Many times we have seen films made on the greatness of a ‘Mother’, but seldom do we see a film that emphasizes the importance & greatness of a ‘Father’. ‘Manus EkMaati’ is a film that focuses on the sacrifices & hardships that a father goes through. Hence, ‘Manus Ek Maati’ is a film that should be watched by the whole family together.

Sharda Vijaykumar Kharat, the producer who believed in this subject decided to make this film under the ‘Shivam Entertainment India Ltd.’ banner along with co-producers Dr. Vijaykumar Kharat, Dilip Nimbekar & executive producer Deva Pande.
