Review:

The only noteworthy feature in debutant Harish Raut’s Shortcut – Disto Pan Nasto is that it is the first Marathi film based on Cyber Crime. There is nothing else to take home from this one. This year has seen a large number of silly Marathi films. Shortcut enters the list successfully.

The film tells the story of Rohit Pradhan (Vaibhav Tatwawadi). As he is passionate about hacking and anything to do with computers, he enrolls for computer engineering. He meets and falls for the bubbly and beautiful Ishika (Sanskruti Balgude). Rohit secretly continues his hacking antics for various reasons. But he soon lands himself on the other side onthe law and comes into direct confrontation with ACP Nimbalkar (Rajesh Shringarpure) of the Cyber Cell.

To be fair, despite the lack of conviction and logic, the first half is watchable and at times, decent. The hacking expedition of the central character and the Cyber Crime track at least keep you interested in knowing the further development and the culmination.

However, the already unconvincing tale submerges further into silliness and poor execution after the interval point. The series of questionable incidents lead up to some truly unconvincing twists in the finale. Apart from the lack of logic in the tale, the major reason for the goof up is some poor research on Cyber Crime and hacking and silly working style of the Cyber Crime officers.

Here are is a list of some unfathomable incidents without spoiling the suspense:

• To relish pizzas for free, Rohit Pradhan hacks into the website of a pizza outlet and makes fake payment. The pizza guys deliver his order without knowing a thing about it.
• A radio station announces an Audi car as a prize for the winner of a contest. The protagonist wins it, of course by hacking into their system.
• A character is made an undercover agent of the Cyber Cell. But he is given an ID card and made to work with the rest of the staff. He also enters their office openly in broad daylight.
• A character is given a chance to prove himself innocent of a cyber crime. He plays few tricks on the computer right in front of the senior officers and deletes their entire data. The officers couldn’t see this coming although their eyes were fixed on the screen all the time.
• The hacking procedure is shown through some funny and, at times, irritating visuals, which appear more like a video game.
• Cyber Crime officers search for evidences in the hostel room of the protagonist in panic mode and leave in the same state, as if they are robbers.
• A character doesn’t want the police to arrest him because he is partying with his friends.

The songs are too many without much purpose. They just add up to the length. The cinematography is average and the background score forceful.

Vaibhav Tatwawadi is a good performer with innocent looks. But the script doesn’t allow him to rise much. Rajesh Shringarpure, another fine actor, provides a decent act, but is let down by his character development. Sanskruti Balgude does what was asked from her.

Overall:

Shortcut – Disto Pan Nasto suffers from a silly storyline and poor execution. This coupled with the lack of hype will make sure the film stands no chance at the box office.

Harish Raut is one more among the growing tribe of debutant directors in the Marathi film industry and his debut film is eagerly anticipated. We spoke to the talented director about his new film.

What is your film all about and what does the title ‘ShortCut’ signify?

Our film is about the recent trend of cyber crimes emerging in the society and a growing magnitude of cyber experts resorting to various frauds and crimes to make a quick buck. We have also highlighted how the youth of today is addicted to internet and other social medias.

Tell us something about your lead cast.

We have the young dashing Vaibhav Tatwawadi who plays a hacker who resorts to crime and he had only one film SURAJYA to his credit when we signed him and opposite him is Sanskruti Balgude who our casting director was very keen to cast.

Reportedly you have six music directors in the film. Why so?

We thought of it as an experiment as no one has done it before and we thought that a debutant music composer if given an opportunity would give his best for his debut film and generally what happens that out of the many songs composed for a film only few are hits but we wanted six very catchy songs for the film and all our music directors have delivered what we wanted.

Reportedly most of the film was shot in Karjat.

Yes. Most of the film is college based and we shot the film in a management college in Karjat and in Mumbai we have shot a few songs.

How was your first film experience?

All the cast and crew was very co-operative and my producers Mukesh Choudhary and Bhavin Dedhia provided me with everything needed to make a good film and I hope my hard work pays off and the film is a success.

What next?

I am making a Hindi film and will soon reveal the details.

Vaibhav Tatwawadi who is a leading star in Marathi cinema is on a high after the success of ‘Coffee ani Barach Kahi’ will soon wow the audiences im his forthcoming film ‘Shortcut’. We spoke to the handsome dashing actor about his new film . A few excerpts.

What is your role in ‘Shortcut’?

I play a computer hacker and it is the story of his journey and his relations with his friends.

What is the basic premise of the film?

The basic premise is that how the youth of today want a fast route to success and money and not working hard for it. It sends across the message that there is no alternative to hard work for success.

How was it like working on the film?

It was great to work with co-stars like Sanskruti Balgude and Rajesh Shringarpure. I had worked with Sanskruti earlier and we shared a comfort level on the sets but with Rajesh I was working for the first time and we shared a healthy relationship.

Tell us something about the director.

The director Harish Raut is a debutant but he has assisted many big names directors and knows his job very well and knows exactly what he wants from his cast and crew and has made a visually appealing film with a good subject.

Has the success of ‘Coffee ani Barach Kahi’ helped your career in any way?

Yes. Any hit film helps your career. And I have bagged some major films including a biggie like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hindi historical ‘Bajirao Mastani’ where I play the character of Chimaji Rao. I also have a very good project in Ajay Phansekar’s ‘Cheater’ for which I recently shot in Mauritius and I have a few untitled films with actresses like Pooja Sawant who will co-star with me.

Q: Tell us something about your new film.

Shortcut is based on cyber crime. Today cyber crimes have become an integral part of our day to day lives and they are increasing in number day by day. To get rich quick and to get instant fame youth of today are misusing ‘the shortcut’ methods. What happens when such shortcuts take you path of crmes and how these repercussions will affect their lives! Vaibhav Tattvavadi plays a hacker in this film. It has a very thrilling storyline and I think youth will be able to connect with this film. I play role of Ishika. She is a college-going girl; this role actually suits my present age. So I did not to do any special preparations. I feel I am representing today’s generation which was fun to do.

Q: How was the experience while working with Vaibhav and Rajesh?

Vaibhav is my dear friend. He is a very sincere and honest actor. I loved every moment while working with him. I think this film will change his image. Rajesh plays a cop in this film. I am sure audience will like his look and actions in this film.
This is a first film directed by Harish Raut. I have liked the way he has designed this entire film.

Q: The film deals with a serious subject of cyber crime. Are you an internet addict?

Luckily, I am not! I don’t have that urge to stay connected at each and every second. Social media is a wonderful experience, but one has to understand all the pros and cons about it before using all this apps. I like to stay in touch with my near and dear ones and fans through social media. However this interaction has to be in moderation.

Q: The film’s music has released recently. Songs are getting popular.

I am already in love with this album. Actually, six composers have given music for this film. Nilesh Mohrir, Sushant Shankar, Premanand, Punit Dixit, Chand Sadhwani and Nick are the music directors. Makhmali, a song composed by Nilesh Mohrir had received so many views on youtube. The album has some nice sift romantic numbers and some foot tapping dance numbers. I hope audience will like these songs.

Q: Dancing is your first passion. Does Shortcut have any of your dance numbers?

Ans: Unfortunately not! I still hope that I will get a good film where dance will be an integral part of the script. I am performing live in various events However, I wish to do a dance-based film in near future.

Q. What are your next projects?

Ans: After release of shortcut, I am busy with four more projects. Curently, I am shooting for Damalelya Babachee kahani with Sandeep Khare. This is a very emotionally touching film. Then I am working on Bhaya, Hatke Love Story, and Shinma.

Q. Seems that you are completely busy with films!

Ans: Yes. Actually, I would like to do some television as well but with such projects in my hand I cannot commit for television.

Q. You are basically from Pune and travels between Mumbai and Pune for work? Which city you like?

Ans: That’s a tough one. I like Mumbai and Pune both. Mumbai is very mysterious and intriguing- this city is just like a dream. However, I grew up in Pune. Pune is like my home. I just love the vibe of this town. I will always love Pune, no matter what where I am staying.

Q. Nowadays, everybody has become health conscious. How do you stay fit?

Ans: Dancing is not only my passion but also my workout. I do practice dance everyday for at least two to three hours. Apart from being a physical exercise dance, it acts like a stress-buster for me. No matter how much tired I am, dance makes me feel rejuvenated.
