‘Sohala’ is an upcoming Marathi film that has united many senior artists & filmmakers together. ‘Sohala’ stars popular actor-singer-filmmaker Sachin Pilgaonkar & is directed by Gajendra Ahire. This film is presented by a big name in Hindi film industry K.C. Bokadia, while the producers of the film are Sohan Bokadia & Suresh Gundecha.

Anaan Marathi Movie Review :

Marathi cinema is going nowhere with simply unique subjects anymore. The makers of today’s Marathi films need to understand the essentiality & urgency of learning ways to explore these ambitious subjects. Prarthana Behere starrer ‘Anaan’ suffers from the same. 

The start of the film suggests an over the top thriller. But soon we realize that it’s just a back story. However the man introduced as villain is set to return. Shilpa Tulaskar (called as Didi) & Uday Sabnis (Didi’s friend/philosopher/brother?) rescues a newly born girl child which the villain wants to kill. That child is considered a sin. So that child grows up as Prarthana Behere. She is a passionate classical dancer trained under Didi (Tulaskar) who is a classical singer. The trailer of this film hinted a few traits of lesbianism. The first half shows a few scenes that could be letting us towards it. But no, it’s an altogether different theme that this film concerns itself with.

On paper this theme itself is extremely ambitious. But this film never manages to understand its magnitude. The treatment ruins every possible chance of taking the theme & the film seriously. One of the most irritating characters in this film is portrayed by Sukhada Deshpande. She plays a German woman who is interested in the mythology of Shiva & is here in India for arranging a classical dance show with the theme of Shiva. She plays a German woman who speaks English & Marathi in a Puneri-American accent. In one moment she is on the phone saying she has booked her tickets for Amsterdam & then in the very next moment she tells a fellow character that she is going back home. What has Amsterdam got to do with her home (in Germany)?

This film keeps screwing up with geography throughout. The villain speaks in Hindi-Marathi with an overdose of Rajasthani dialect. The places in the story are not at all defined. In the all important climax the film shifts locations like they are just a prop on a stage. Everyone ends up being at the same place without even knowing each other’s whereabouts!

The title of this film ‘Anaan’ isn’t justified almost throughout. During the final dance performance I still managed to find out what it actually means. Let’s say it would be a spoiler to reveal it here. All I can say is that ‘Anaan’ is an abbreviated form of one of the many names Lord Shiva has, which also represents the conflict of the protagonist of this film.

We see the film throwing in Lord Shiva’s myth in between for effect. This film could not even get any grace points for a ‘different subject’ because it simply makes everything laughable. For example there’s a character in this film that has been attacked by our villain by a knife on the neck! But guess what? The other characters never even consider filing a police case! They pretend it’s an accident & move on with their lives. They are completely aware that this villain is on his way to kill the protagonist, yet no police in the picture whatsoever! Why? What kind of fairy land is this film set in?

Then there’s another sub-track of our hero. He is a passionate classical dancer who considers his art as his girl friend. This philosophy of his doesn’t even last the first half of the film. His father has fixed his marriage with his friend’s daughter. This daughter is another gem when it comes to bad characterization! She is obsessed with our hero for no specified reason. Her father in the climax scene says that his daughter is very ‘aggressive’ & she can do anything if she doesn’t get to be our hero’s bride! My point is that by common sense her character was made this way to make the police think that the attacks are done by her! But as I told you, there is no police! 

Overall:

Lets pray to Lord Shiva that Marathi cinema gets over this really bad phase that it is going through right now.

Seems like the audiences are truly loving the ‘Boyz’. This unique teenage comedy has attracted the college going & other young audiences all over Maharashtra. Moreover there is positive word of mouth for the film which means their box office collections will go on increasing in the upcoming weeks!

The songs ‘Mayalu Kanvalu’ & ‘Kuthe Kuthe Jayacha Honeymoon La’ should also be credited for attracting the audiences towards theatres. This film is easily relatable to growing up teenagers who are experiencing changes in them & around them. Hence, the success of the film proves that the film has managed to connect with these audiences.

Parth Bhalerao’s performance as ‘Dhungya’ has been widely appreciated by the crowd. We expect Parth to soon turn out to be a superstar for Marathi cinema after all he is talented in every way. If you haven’t seen ‘Boyz’ yet don’t waste anymore time & watch the film only in theatres.

Boyz Marathi Movie Review :

First & foremost I would say that the whole marketing strategy applied by the makers & sellers of ‘Boyz’ has succeeded! I happened to watch this film in a regular theatre with a fair percentage of occupancy. I was pleasantly surprised by it. Almost all of the audiences comprised of college going ‘Boys’! And they came in here whole heartedly with their own groups to enjoy the film. In my observation they fairly enjoyed the film. So if you’re one of those audiences who have finalized their decision to watch this film in theatres? Watch it.

To those who are still reading this, I have a few things to put down. Firstly Marathi cinema has been (or rather had been) celebrated for choosing unique subjects consistently. That consistency isn’t visible in recent times. The basic structure of ‘Boyz’ could easily be seen in last year’s poorly made ‘Yaari Dosti’. While ‘Yaari Dosti’ was plainly intolerable ‘Boyz’ isn’t. However ‘Boyz’ shows only a few glimpses of truly smashing (just ‘fair’ isn’t enough) popular entertainment. A few opening shots of this film reminded me of ‘3 Idiots’ & later the film kept reminding me of ‘3 Idiots’ & ‘Munna Bhai MBBS’ combined! The thing is, not everyone can manage to be funny yet emotionally, socially relevant all the time like Rajkumar Hirani (maker of 3 Idiots & Munna Bhai).

However the transition from being funny to a moment when the film expects the audiences to take it seriously is quite tricky! I could read the awkward laughs from the audiences during this tricky phase of this film. The problem here is the lack of logic in the very basic conflict of the film. Generally, a mid teenager (Sumant Shinde) could be considered to be sensible enough, that a mother could openly tell him about the father he never had in his life. Fine at that stage we could still forgive this as a minor flaw. But later this flaw keeps haunting us every time the film wishes to establish an emotional connect with the audiences. (Instead the emotional connect had a broader scope with the other two ‘Boyz’). Though Shilpa Tulaskar’s performance as the mother is very much believable, in fact all the performances are decent enough (including the small parts played by Santosh Juvekar & Vaibhav Mangale) to not harm the film in any way.

Talking about the part that brought the audiences in theatres, the outsiders who enter a strict boarding school! Parth Bhalerao is good at playing the same character repeatedly! He still manages to interest us with his presence. The other actor (Pratik Lad) too is decent in his part. But again they (their characters) are one-dimensional & predictable throughout. As the film progresses the humor is no longer as novel as it was when they first entered the school asking for a selfie from their new strict principal! 

Another major problem with ‘Boyz’ is the character of the supposed villain, the principal (Zakir Hussain). Throughout the film only a few dialogues mouthed by a good hearted professor (Juvekar) & the back ground music emphasize the villainous traits of this otherwise considerate principal! Later in a scene, almost forcefully he is transformed into a full-fledged bad guy & suddenly he is made to appear like a prison warden!

I don’t understand why every film made in Marathi these days wishes to make a greater point, some kind of moral of the story. I was reminded of Sujay Dahake’s ‘Shala’ a film that never had any intention of giving us a moral lesson, yet it turned out to be the best Marathi film made on the school life scenario. So the moral of the story for ‘Boyz’ is in fact a complete mess! I won’t give up everything but let’s say it’s anti-3 Idiots! Remember what Rancho was famous for? Asking questions! I didn’t crave for a moral from ‘Boyz’. I would have been interested in seeing how the two outsiders truly set this establishment in chaos & all of that with no sense of responsibility! That’s what films that are made with sheer purpose of entertaining the audiences should do!

Though Parth Bhalerao is good, he isn’t the strongest aspect of the film. Surprisingly & sadly the strongest aspects here are the technical aspects like the camera work & sound. The background score had so much scope to be louder & irritating but thankfully it’s not. The dialogues of this film definitely work, but with the restrictions provided by the overall screenplay of the film.

Overall:

As said earlier, If you’ve already made your plans to watch this film, definitely watch it but don’t expect it to be a ‘Sairat’ or ‘3 Idiots’! Again to those who haven’t, ‘Boyz’ is a film that is well made technically, but with very primary errors in the screenplay, errors that are overall unforgivable!
