Quick Viewpoint: Sameer Vidwans has beautifully created a world that is less about the backdrop & more about the humans of the pre independence era. He succeeds in telling us the inspiring story of India’s first female doctor!

What Works? 

• Anandi Gopal craft wise is one of the most superior films made in Marathi that are set in a different era. Yet as said earlier the film’s focus isn’t on the backdrop of that era or the overall British rule over India. Especially the camera work by Akash Agrawal maintains that personal feel in the film.
• The character arc of Gopalrao Joshi (Lalit Prabhakar) is so mindfully created that we understand the minute changes his character goes through because of the situations that he is put into. He is throughout believable as a person who can be both strong and weak in different scenarios.
• Bhagyashree Milind as Anandibai Joshi has given a sublime nuanced performance. Again because just like Gopalrao’s arc her character too is beautifully sketched out making us understand both the revolutionary, confident woman & the child that she was before.
• The film doesn’t over dramatize or underplay the difficulties that Anandibai & Gopalrao had to face to make their dream a reality. Every conflict that is show in the film & the way it is shown is very much believable. Hence we are throughout by their side routing for their dream to come true! And when it does it becomes an emotionally rewarding closure for us.
• Never does the film ever distract itself from it’s main narrative. I mention this because there was clearly scope for the film to indulge itself in the freedom struggle or the other social problems. The film wholly stays personal & specific.

What Fails? 

• Though Lalit Prabhakar shows sparks throughout his performance here & there, overall his performance remains inconsistent. Many a times his limitations to function only at two emotional extremes hampers the nuances the performance demanded at some occasions.

Final Verdict: ‘Anandi Gopal’ is a film that is a must watch for the inspiring tale of a woman who had the guts to work hard for achieving her goal/dream in a completely unfavorable situation & her husband who had the vision for a different society in India.

Mala Kahich Problem Nahi Marathi Movie Review :

‘Mala Kahich Problem Nahi’ is directed by Sameer Vidwans who previously gave us films like ‘Time Please’, ‘Double Seat’ & ‘YZ’. This is clearly Vidwans’ weakest film. It was also the first time Vidwans was working with a different writer (Kaustubh Savarkar). His partnership with Kshitij Patwardhan gave a fresh perspective to Marathi cinema, their best being ‘Double Seat’. The basic problem with ‘Mala Kahich Problem Nahi’ is the screenplay. Elsewhere the film is just as good as Vidwans’ previous works in terms of craft & technique.

But as it is believed ‘a good script’ is essentially important, the overall film suffers due to it. The story is of a couple who got married in a hurry. And then after a few years & having a child they realize there’s something wrong between them. The husband (Gashmeer) is a man of less words & that is the major conflict of the film, his wife (Spruha) can no longer go through with the ‘auto-pilot’ (as they say in the film) mode on in their life. Suddenly in the middle of this, arrive their parents! Yes it was a love marriage & both parties (families) had a unpleasant history together. So then the mother (Nirmiti Sawant) of the husband initiates an act of redemption, by deciding that all of them will spend a few days in Konkan where the other party resides.

This idea (of shifting this film to Konkan) is not really out of logic, but it is certainly ambitious. And that’s where the film starts to struggle. Countless characters & tracks are introduced & we keep wondering what has all this got to do with the film we saw in the first half! The thing is this idea could’ve been novel enough only when it had lasted for a while, & the narrative had shifted back to the world where the husband & wife actually belong too. The end of the film becomes as expectedly abrupt & we are left exhausted by the whole exercise the second half makes us do.

Actually the second half isn’t that bad, it could’ve worked in a different context. It just doesn’t match the first half & the actual conflict of the film. All the character actors (Satish Alekar, Nirmiti Sawant, Kamlesh Sawant, Vijay Nikam & others) who are a part of it have played their parts beautifully & save the film from becoming a disaster. Among the lead, Spruha looks a bit out of sorts & frankly appears unsuitable for the role. Surprisingly Gashmeer gave a better performance, better than anything he has done before! In fact that is the biggest positive from ‘Mala Kahich Problem Nahi’!

The end of this film reminds of Vidwan’s previous film YZ’s end! This film could’ve been better had the second half was developed better on the paper. In the first half, one actor shines in the role of a friend, philosopher & guide to the couple. Vinod Lavekar is that actor who has been working as director in T.V. He is hardly seen in films, the last we saw him was in the video adaptation of ‘Sakharam Binder’ play. Imagine a regular sidekick actor in this role, & the whole spice of that character goes away! The ‘Gaaj Yeta Go’ is very much addictive & has a beautiful soul to it, but only if this soul was reflected in the film, the film could’ve turned better.

Overall:

As the title goes, ‘Mala Kahich Problem Nahi’ is definitely problematic but is fine for a one time watch or if you are a huge Gashmeer Mahajani fan!

Recently Spruha Joshi one of Maharashtra’s favorite leading ladies revealed a special news through her social media account. She posted a pic of her, director Sameer Vidwans&GashmeerMahajani with a caption “So here we are… A fresh new start with a fresh new team.. First project of 2017 begins today. @gashmeer Details to follow soon..Super excited!!”

The name of the movie is still kept unrevealed. Recently the muhurat of the movie was commenced by the Producer P. S. Chhatwal. Also present were the co-producer of the movie Ravi Singh, Director Sameer Vidwans and other Artists of the film.

Speaking about this unique couple, Director Sameer Vidwans said “I found Spruha and Gashmir’s duo very apt for the topic. Spruha is a very nice friend of mine but we have never worked together, not even with Gashmir. Similarly, they both haven’t worked together. Till Double seat, even Mukta and Ankush hadn’t worked together. In the same way, this jodi’s chemistry will grow over the time and that is the need of the topic of the movie. I know I would have lots of fun working with them.”

We have observed that Sameer Vidwans has always worked with different actors in his films. And most of these actors have given their best performances in his films, whether it’s AnkushChaudhari’s ‘Amit’ from ‘Double Seat’ or PriyaBapat’s ‘Amruta’ from ‘Time Please’. In Sameer’s films along with the lead actors the rest of the cast is equally important! So we are extremely excited to learn more about this film & yes will Sameer Vidwans collaborate with writer-friend KshitijPatwardhan again? Also remains an important question.

YZ Marathi Movie Review :

Marathi Cinema is having a particularly ordinary year. We are more than half way through 2016 and there are only a handful films that are worth recommending. But now as we have entered the later part of the year, things are looking brighter. After the charming Half Ticket that released last month, with YZ we now have another marathi film that is worth watching in the theatres. YZ is not only laden with tongue-in-cheek humour as the title and the promos would suggest, but is also a thoughtful film.The note on which the film ends is what left me pleasantly surprised and most impressed.

YZ is a film of two different halves. The film begins rather humorously with an introduction to the protagonist Gajanan (Sagar Deshmukh) – a single, virgin and socially very awkward man in his 30s. A simpleton to the core, he is born and brought up in Wai and now teaches history in a local college. He dreams of visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, at least once in his life time.A shy and non-engineer guy like Gajanan has troubles getting married. He doesn’t have the confidence to approach a woman himself and isn’t a very saleable ‘product’ in the arrange marriage market either.The scenes in the ‘vadhu-var melava’ wherein we are shown Gajanan being introduced with a remark that he has no four-wheelerare particularly humourous. He is transferred to a Pune collegeon a temporary basis for 6 months and comes into contact with the college cool dude – ‘Battees'(Akshay Tanksale). How these 6 months in Pune spent by Gajanan have a profound impact on him as a person and on his life, is what YZ is all about. A kind of coming of age film, albeit of a man aged 33.The early parts of the film are full of funny lines, mostly involving the conversation between Battees and Gajanan, as the former is trying to teach him to develop a personality that would impress women. Battees calls this a YZ attitude. There is nothing really very original in the plot seen before in films like Hitch, but at least the film made me laugh more than a couple of times.

The film breezes through the first quarter of the duration, but without much substance or intent, till Gajanan is visited by the prospective bride Parnarekha (Sai Tamhankar). The Parnarekha chapter of Gajanan’s six month stay has to be the most engaging as her well drawn character sketch gives the scenes a lot of humour born out of situations and character quirks. It has the right mix of content, direction and humour. Saie Tamhankar’s convincing performance goes along way in making her portions of the film so impressive.

As the film enters the second half there is a sudden switch in the mood with the film getting thoughtful. It would have been easier for the makers of the film to stick to the fun filled atmosphere of the first half, but they haven’t and that is certainly commendable. However, as the film starts getting a little depth you cannot shrug of the feeling of the proceedings turning a little dull. Take for example the long preachy speech by Gajanan in his lecture about how we are more interested in building statues of our historical figures but don’t bother to imbibe the values they stood for. Though the thought behind the second half is appreciable, some scenes get a rather cliched treatment like the one in which Gajanan’s Aunt confesses how married life sucked away her love for reading. Wiser from his experience with Parnarekha and courtesy the company of Battees, Gajanan starts to express himself more freely. He develops a confidence to just be himself. He moves out of his Aunt’s house with whom he was staying in Pune and starts living in a rented place. This new avatar of his impresses his cousin’s young friend Antara and she develops feelings for him. Also, Gajanan coincidentally meets his long lost childhood sweetheart Saylee (Mukta Barve) and realises that he still has feelings for her even after all these years. Saylee is in a serious relationship with another man, but still not married. Parnarekha, in the meanwhile, again meets Gajanan in a reformed avatar taking him by pleasant surprise.

So, Gajanan – the once perennially single man – now suddenly has three women in his life with whom he has the possibility of getting into a relationship. As an audience we try to second guess the lady Gajanan will walk down the aisle with, but it is here that the filmmakers pull out an ace byside-stepping all cliches and ending on a note that very few filmmakers in India would have chosen to.

Theatre artiste Sagar Deshmukh delivers a knockout performance in his first major role in a film. The camaraderie he shares with Akshay Tanksale is one of the biggest positive of the film.There is hardly a dull moment when the two are on screen together. Another major plus are the consistently funny dialogue. The other ladies Parna Pethe and Mukta Barve don’t get a lot of screen time, but are well cast.

The writer-director pair of Kshitij Patwardhan and Sameer Vidwans have come up with another fine film after last year’s Double Seat. Here’s wishing the pair treat us with more such quality cinema which we haven’t seen much in the recent past.

Overall:

YZ is a consistently humourous film, with a solid performance by the lead actor Sagar Deshmukh. It also leaves you pleasantly surprised by its end.
