Review: Rampaat

Viewpoint: ‘Rampaat’ is by a long distance Ravi Jadhav’s worst film. It fails at every aspect of story telling from it’s loosely conceived screenplay on paper to it’s fragile plastic like execution of it.

What Works?  

• The only positive to come out from this whole unfocused passion project about the strugglers in the world of cinema is a newcomer who plays the female lead, Kashmira Pardeshi. Her conviction is evident even if her whole track feels completely silly and uninspiringly unoriginal!

What Fails? 

• To begin with both Abhinay Berde & Priya Berde feel terribly miscast in this film. No way do we feel comfortable to see Priya Berde as a widow from a drought struck part of Maharashtra, neither does her over animated filmy mother amuse us in any way (it instead irritates). While Abhinay feels even more in need of grooming than in his debut film where too he struggled a lot. (The irony is that the film deals with the subject of actors needing to improve themselves before offering their talents to cinema.)
• Usually Ravi Jadhav has a very tight & in detailed command over two important aspects in his films. One is the authenticity in his worlds (whether it’s Balak Palak, or TP series, or Natrang) & other being the smartness to use certain devices in the plot to take the story forward. A lot like Rajkumar Hirani from Bollywood Ravi Jadhav understands pretty well how the audiences react to the littlest of things making them very good commercial filmmakers. In short their films never turn boring! But that’s exactly what ‘Rampaat’ becomes. It’s boring from the very first half an hour of the film. The world building is extremely generic & there is absolutely no attention to detail. It almost feels like it’s directed by a newcomer who has very little understanding of the medium.
• There’s complete confusion about what the film really wanted to be! Did it want to become a love story set in the world of cinema (& strugglers) or a film about strugglers who happened to be falling in love while chasing their dream. It tries to become both & fails at both. It feels like a cheaper bastardized version of many films from Om Shanti Om to Bunty Aur Babli.
• Having said all that, it still has a valid point to make about making it big as actors or stars, but one doesn’t care about it as the journey that lead to it is throughout silly, shallow & plainly uninteresting. (Not to forget the irony when an incompetent actor has been cast in the lead).
• Beyond anything else you at least expect a Ravi Jadhav film to be visually grand & pleasing to the senses, apart from the post film rap song in this department too ‘Rampaat’ is strictly mediocre.

Final Verdict: I would rather recommend you to watch ‘La La Land’ if you haven’t, just to know what magic can be created on this very subject!

Ever since Ravi Jadhav’s ‘Rampaat‘ was announced the audiences where eagerly awaiting to know more about the film. Like many times before Ravi Jadhav has again collaborated with Zee Studios for this film. After giving countless hits like the ‘Timepass series, Balak Palak, & Natrang Ravi Jadhav & Zee have again come together to entertain us.

The teaser of the film is out now and the film feels like a total masala entertainer which is about dance! And of course there also seems to be a love angle! The actors who are playing these characters have been kept a secret in this teaser as we can only see their backside! The song used in the teaser is like a rap song which too is new for Marathi cinema!

Ravi Jadhav has both kinds of films, one which are extremely socially relevant & have moral statement to make like ‘Nude‘ & ‘Mitra’ while he as also made pure entertainers & sometimes he has married both the styles in films like ‘Balak Palak’ & ‘Natrang’! With ‘Rampaat‘ it would be interesting to see which side does Ravi Jadhav turn to! No matter where he turns we are sure he would succeed in it!

Nude (Chitra) Movie Review:

Nude is a film that needs to be understood in two ways. One that is the ‘literal’ way which is about a middle aged woman ‘Yamuna’ (Kalyanee Mulye) who after being betrayed by her husband lands up in Mumbai with her son & ends up being a nude model for fine art students at J.J. School of Arts (an iconic art college of our country). The other way is more within the lines. The alternate title used smartly in the promotions of the film ‘Chitra’ is a sign for this other allegory. An artist at the college (Om Bhutkar) who becomes a silent companion of Yamuna throughout her journey discovers ‘Chitra’. ‘Chitra’ represents the art work that he creates with the help of Yamuna & also the hidden meaning of ‘Nude’.

‘Chitra’ also represents ‘art’ in totality. ‘Art’ that means different things to different people. An exact same painting could evoke different emotions from beings of the same species. These emotions could bring out the inner most desires of that being. A painting of a woman without clothes would represent the ‘soul’ of humanity to some & to some it would seem sexually explicit. It’s sadly ironic that one couldn’t resist associating the famous Rabindranath Tagore quote told to us by our beloved Pu La Deshpande with ‘Nude’.

Tagore said, every painter watches the sunrise in a different way. Hence there are never too many sunrise portraits, there’s always room for more. In a scene (from Nude) when we first see 5-6 fine art students painting the same woman sitting in front of them, we could associate her with the sun. But then later we could also associate this ‘difference of perspective’ theory on people who get violently offended or sexually excited by ‘art’!

From the very first frame of ‘Nude’ we are enticed by the visuals. It’s like Ravi Jadhav & his marvellous technical team (the cinematographer, editors, & even sound artists) announcing to us loud & clear that their film is about ‘paintings’! Lively moving images (paintings) where the reality is not treated that stark to pull us out from the visual artistry. Yes the film establishes it’s world with great detailing, but makes sure that the film isn’t about the world.

The major portion being based in Mumbai & that too in Mumbai slums the film doesn’t focus on it. The focus is very much intimate. We are with ‘Yamuna’ all the time. Her son (Madan Deodhar) & her aunty (Chhaya Kadam) are important to Yamuna & hence to us. Yet their interaction with us is as much it is with Yamuna. Her aunt is the driving force in Yamuna’s life in the beginning of the film but soon Yamuna is in her own control. Her son is not a completely developed character on it’s own, & has a few logical errors in his arc, yet he delivers the final ‘kick’ in the film. Yes Nude has a fantastically hard hitting climax or a ‘takeout’ scene.

Kalyanee Mulye as Yamuna in the first few scenes appears to be putting up a show. Her mannerisms even appear strangely fake. But soon we ‘get’ her. We accept her rendition of ‘Yamuna’. Those mannerisms no longer feel strange, they feel very real. She gives a sublime performance in all aspects of acting. Her command over a unique rural dialect, her mannerisms, her body language & the way she emotes her inner trauma all of it is outstanding! Chhaya Kadam plays a character similar to what she played in ‘Sairat’ but does it with perfection. Other performances in the film are decent too.

The real heroes of ‘Nude’ (Chitra) are Ravi Jadhav, his technical team & even Sachin Kundalkar who has contributed in the screenplay & dialogues of the film. The long journey for ‘Nude’ is known to us all, but our long wait has been rewarded in every way. ‘Nude’ is a film that pleases our senses & yet gives us a bit unpleasant food for thought. It affects us in a way ‘art’ is supposed to affect!

Overall:

‘Nude’ (Chitra) deserves a watch from every creative soul & from those who adore ‘art’, understand it & imbibe it as a way of life.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day the press conference of upcoming Marathi film ‘Nude’ directed by Ravi Jadhav was held at the historical JJ School of Arts in Mumbai. The film has been in news for a long time since last year’s IFFI where the title of the film created a controversy. But now all the audiences who were eager to see this film can enjoy it at a theatre near you from 27^th April. The film is now being presented by Zee Studios & is being released in Maharashtra as well as in some other states of India.

At this event the actual inspiration for the film a women named ‘Lakshmi’ was also present. She worked as a nude model at the JJ School of Arts for over 30 years! She spoke about how her students treated her like god & made her feel proud of her work! Now she was very happy that a film has been made on her story & is soon releasing in theatres.

Ravi Jadhav himself been a student of JJ School of arts & he assured the media that Nude (Chitra) won’t be sexualised in any way instead it presents the realistic & artistic side of the story. Kalyanee Mulye & Chhaya Kadam play nude model in this film who take up this work to support their family. ‘Yuntum’ is an upcoming Marathi movie, rural romantic drama directed by ‘Chaurya’ fame director Sameer Asha Patil. The film stars debutants Vaibhav Kadam & Apoorva Shelgaonkar. Vaibhav Kadam was chosen for this role from social media! The very first song of the film was recently released online.

‘Gara Gara’ captures the innocence of first love perfectly. The song is beautifully shot & the actors seem to be perfect in their parts. Though after the success of ‘Sairat’ many romantic Marathi films have come but ‘Yuntum’ seems to be unique & since it’s made by a good director we can expect the film to make a connect with us & also entertain us.
