Quick Viewpoint: MPM 3 takes off from where MPM 2 left, not just story wise but overall the film exceeds on the stronger points of the previous film & minuses some of the negatives! 

What Fails? 

• The film could have easily been edited for at least 10-15 minutes especially in the second half. Some scenes though harmless don’t seem that important at the later stage of the narrative.
• As usual the ever-present flaw in almost every Satish Rajwade film. Visually the film looks like a daily soap! From the use of light, to the art direction & makeup of artists.
• Certain elements in the film feel repetitive, like how Gautam (Swapnil Joshi) keeps repeating that he wasn’t ready to be a father. At a point the film doesn’t understand the actual weightage of this statement, it keeps using it as a character trait.

What Works?

• Performances! Swapnil Joshi becomes an altogether different actor when he is in ‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai’ & again he is smashing throughout! Mukta Barve too compliments him & so does the rest of the senior cast which include Prashant Damle, Savita Prabhune, Vijay Kenkre, Suhas Joshi & Rohini Hattangadi.

• The way film slowly establishes it’s primary conflict (of Gautam & Gauri turning ‘accidental parents’), it happens so organically & believably that we can easily relate it with our own life or with the people around us.

• Both Gautam (Swapnil) & Gauri (Mukta) are essentially unique characters but flawed human beings. And hence when they are put into a believable situation the drama that enfolds becomes interesting.

• The film goes easy on ‘drama’ in the second half, unlike the second installment of the series where the drama went on increasing as the narrative progressed. Though both decisions work perfectly in both films respectively!

• Even while encompassing more characters & appearing like a family drama, this film understands that the heart of this franchise is a ‘love story’! And it skillfully highlights that again so beautifully!

Final Verdict: All in all ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai 3’ offers everything that the dedicated fans of the franchise were hoping for!

Swapnil Joshi & Mukta Barve starer ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai 3‘ continues where the first two films of the franchise left. In the first film, we saw Mumbai & Pune falling in love with each other, in the second film they got married & now they are having a baby! The film captures the purest feeling of turning parents! The film has the tagline from the popular Prashant Damle song, ‘Sukh Mhanje Nakki Kay Asta’. Just like the first two films the third will also be directed by Satish Rajwade.

The sequel ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai-2’ was released during Diwali on November 2 two years ago. Not only in Maharashtra, but the film goers even in other states like Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka and even in US received overwhelming Response. The film was screened in San Francisco, Houston, Los Angeles, Detroit, Salt Lake City among other others.

Director Satish Rajwade said, “We did not expect Mumbai Pune Mumbai to be successful to such an extent. Mumbai Pune Mumbai (MPM) as now became a cult, seating a trend of one of its kind love story. MPM has become a habit with the audience. People are now more curious about the lives of Gautam and Gauri. And related themselves with the happenings in the lives of the couple.

‘Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai 3’ is being produced by Sanjay Chhabria while the associate producer is Amit Bhanushali. The release date announced as of now is 27^th April 2018.

Sagar Deshmukh (YZ)

YZ was a complex film that talked on passion, friendship, romance, life & everything in between. Sagar Deshmukh as ‘Gajanan’ was a genuinely out of the box protagonist. First of all a lot of credit goes to the makers of ‘YZ’ who perfectly casted Sagar in this role. Throughout the film Sagar is natural & carries the whole film on his shoulders with ease. We would definitely want to see him more often in Marathi films now!

Prashant Damle (Bho Bho)

It’s a said rule that usually popular stage actors are not suited in films. But the king of Marathi theatre for over 2 decades, Prashant Damle proved this rule wrong. He was just as great on the screen as he is on the stage. He scores in the comic, eccentric part of the film but he is even better in the emotional scenes. His character ‘Detective Vyankatesh Bhonde’ has a fondness for dogs & has many heart touching scenes were Prashant Sir is seen taking care of them, talking with them & also saving their life!

Jitendra joshi (Ventilator)

Jitu Joshi is an actor who gives his 200% to every role that comes his way. And his role of ‘Prasanna’ from ‘Ventilator’ was perfectly tailor-made for him. A struggling political activist whose father is on ‘Ventilator’ & he has been put into a position to choose whether his father should stay on the ‘Ventialtor’ or not. It’s the most difficult choice for a son to make, even if he wasn’t his father’s favorite child. This conflict & moral confusion has been portrayed by Jitu with real panache! His eyes emote everything that goes on in Prasanna’s mind throughout the film!

Nana Patekar (Natsamrat)

The most loved acting performance of 2016 by all audiences. Nana played a sharp, satirical but equally theatrical version of Dr. Lagoo’s ‘Ganpat Belwalkar’. Many have written about all those beautiful philosophical, theatrical & poetic dialogues that Nana recites in the film, but we felt Nana is actually more fantastic in those normal scenes. He simply seems to be enjoying living this mythical celebrated role. Those scenes where he ridicules his son-in-law’s boss about plays & playwrights or those when he enters drunk at the party or his satirical conversations with friend & ex-competitor Vikram Gokhale!

Dr. Mohan Agashe (Astu)

Dr. Mohan Agashe is one of India’s most underrated actors. He has worked in countless great films in different languages & he has been actively part of theatre as well. His role of a Sanskrit scholar who slowly & steadily gets affected by Alzheimer’s disease in ‘Astu’ is one of his most accomplished performances ever. The transition of an intelligent, learned man into a child who has no memory & no understanding of ‘life as we know it’ is played with subtle brilliance by Agashe Sir. It’s sad that a film like ‘Astu’ & a performance like Agashe Sir’s had to be crowd funded to manage a release in theatres. Nevertheless, it’s a film that will stay forever as a film that questioned, analyzed our purpose & meaning of existence.

Comedy is an underrated art. It is one of the most difficult thing to make people laugh. ‘Zee Talkies Comedy Awards’ has been the forerunner in appreciating humour in Marathi film and theatre industry. The annual award show was held this year as well in its full glory at the Ravindra Natyamandir. The theme this year was ‘Kal Aaj Aur Kal’.

‘Murder Mestri’ and ‘Shree Bai Samarth’were awarded the Best Film and Best Play, respectively. Veteran actor Prashant Damle won the Best Actor award, while Kranti Redkar and Manasi Naik were honoured with the Best Actress award at the ceremony. There was a separated section for reprised plays as well and the Best Play award there went to Sanshay Kallol. In the same section Prashant Damle (Sanshay Kallol) and Hemangi Kavi (Ti Phulrani) were announced as the Best Actor and Best Actress.

Madhukar Toradmal who has graced the stage and films in a career of over 5 decades was honoured with the Life Time Achievement Award. ‘Loknatya Vishesh Puraskar’ was awarded to the great performer from Konkan, Mahadev Chodnekar. Senior actor Arun Nalwade was also given the Special Jury Award.

The excitement in the announcement of awards, the top quality performances and the enthusiastic response from the audience made the even a memorable night.
