Produced by Siva Kumar R. & directed by choreographer turned filmmaker Anddy, ‘Gavthi – Apman Nahi Abhiman’ is in theaters currently from 30^th March. We did an exclusive interview with the lead pair of the film, the debutants actor Shrikant Patil & actress Yogita Chavan about the film & about themselves!

‘Gavthi – Apman Nahi Abhiman’ is a very unique title. Tell us about it’s origin.

Shrikant Patil: Actually this film is based on the real life struggle of our producer Siva Kumar Sir. When he came to Mumbai for the first time he was called by such names in the city. My character in the film too faces the same treatment. It was Siva Sir’s perspective that one should take this as ‘abhiman’ & not ‘apman’!

Since Siva Kumar Sir is a South Indian & your character in the film is of a Maharashtrian, the cultural background does it affect the story?

Shrikant Patil: In our country people from different places who become successful have their origin from villages. So the cultural background doesn’t matter. But some people forget their origins after shifting to cities.

Tell us about your ‘origin’ story. This is your first film, how did it happen?

Yogita Chavan: My background is from dance just like Anddy Sir (the choreographer turned director of ‘Gavthi’). One & a half years ago I started acting & then ‘Gavthi’ happened.

Did you audition for ‘Gavthi’?

Yogita Chavan: Yes after giving my auditions I waited for the call & Anddy Sir himself called me & broke the news to me that I was selected for the part!

Anddy Sir is a choreographer  turned filmmaker, so it’s obvious that ‘dance’ would be an inherent part of this film. How much is dance important to you in your lives?

Yogita Chavan: My career started with dance, I used to perform in ‘Marathi Bana’ earlier, so yes dance is very close to my heart! And I think ‘acting’ is a part of dancing too.

Shrikant Patil: Well I am not really good at dancing, but in this film since my character has a raw ‘gavthi’ style of dancing I could do it & I enjoyed it too!

The Trailer of the film suggests it has many genres from romance, thriller & the second half feels completely different.

Shrikant Patil: In the film you can see the journey of the protagonist from being a teenager to a matured young man. The film isn’t just based in the village, neither is it just a love story, there are many conflicts in the film. There’s romance, there’s a family drama between the hero, hero’s father & mother & there is a strong social context of the village. This film cannot be type casted into one genre as such!

Yogita Chavan: As an audience when I look at the film I feel it’s a complete entertaining package. There’s romance, drama, comedy & overall it’s a pure entertainment package!

The first song ‘Disu Laglis Tu’ has already become a blockbuster among the audiences especially the youth. Recently in an event in Mumbai Bollywood star Tiger Shroff inaugurated this ‘Bhannat Song’! He even danced to it!

This song has fun ‘south Indian’ flavour in it. The director & choreographer ‘Anddy’ himself is seen dancing in this video. The hero of the film played a young actor Shreekant Patil however represents a common man in the film & hence dancing style too is more according to that!

‘Gavthi – Apman Nahi Abhiman’ is loosely based on the life of the film’s producer Mr. Sivakumar Ramchandran who was mocked by the city people when he first entered the city. The film presents the similar journey but from the perspective of a Marathi Manoos!

Music of Lord of Shinganapur was launched in a glamorous event recently. The film is based on a popular deity- Shani Maharaj and has been written-directed by Raj Rathod.

For the event, Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh, actress Varsha Usgaonkar, and TV celebrity Rahul Mahajan were present. Entire cast and crew of the film was present including Ashutosh Kulkarni, Milind Joshi, cinematographer Prashant Jadhav, Editor Ajit Devle. The film also marks debut of TV celebrity Rahul Mahajan in Marathi films.

The album contains five songs – Bali Umar, Nilanjan Samabhas, Deva Shani Deva, Hi Duniya re, Tu majhe aashiqui. The lyrics are by Farukh Barelvi and sung by singers like Bela Shende, Swapnil Bandodkar, Rupkumar Rathod, Sadhana Sargam, Javed Ali, Sukhvindar Singh, Ravindra Sathe and Vaibhav Vashisht. The music has been given by Farhan Shaikh and background music has been scored by Monty Sharma.

The film stars Milind Gunaji as Shani Maharaj. Review:

The promos of 3:56 Killari generated few questions. Is the film about reincarnation? Is it a horror story? But after watching it, none of these questions really matter. What matters is that this is yet another Marathi film this year that manages to find financers despite such content.

The story starts off when an adolescent girl Sharayu (Gauri Ingawale) is having a great time in a road trip with her parents until their car meets with an accident. Her parents are killed but she is saved. Her grandparents, staying at Killari, provide her shelter and care. At Killari, Sharayu gets strange and mysterious flashes at few places, which were destroyed during the 1993 earthquake.

Her grandparents realize that it is best to send her to a hostel managed by a Catholic Father (Jackie Shroff), who is helped by a counselor (Saie Tamhankar). Will Sharayu find peace finally? Or is this just the start of a mysteriously scary tale?

Despite the lack of novelty, 3:56 Killari has an interesting and intriguing concept. However, it is presented in a poor and immature manner. Plus, the final conclusion leaves some important questions unanswered and makes you wonder at the basic intention of the story.

The film also has some major issue with regards to keeping the audience guessing. The main plot is revealed right in the initial moments itself, which becomes a spoiler. Hence, the audience just has to wait for further development. The wait turns out to be long and painful.

Long because of the boring screenplay and painful because of the irritatingly loud background score, which forces you to cover your ears at times. It is an outdated technique where loud noises are added in a scene where nothing much is happening, just to make the audience feel the opposite. And to accompany this is some juvenile use of editing effects.

Perhaps, the camerawork (Vijay Mishra) is the only saving grace. Had the shots not been so artistic, things would have been worse. The songs are nothing to write about.

Performances provide some respite. Gauri Ingavwale plays a difficult character with ease. She is surely talented. Saie Tamhankar proves she is perfect for the character of a counselor. Jackie Shroff makes a confident debut in Marathi cinema while playing the character of a priest. Shrikant Moghe, Rama Joshi, Pankaj Vishnu and Anurag Sharma provide decent support.

Overall:

3:56 Killari has an interesting concept but the film fails in execution and presentation.

Few years back, an earthquake shook the entire Maharashtra and demolished an entire village of Killari. A film has been made on this tragedy and its aftermath “3:56 Killari” by director Deepak Bhagwat. The film stars Bollywood star Jackie Shroff and our own Marathi diva Saie Tamhankar in leading roles. Child artiste Gauri Ingawale also has a prominent role in this film.

The film will be releasing on 21 August all over Maharashtra. Jackie plays a role of the church padre who runs an orphanage. Saie will be seen in the role of a teacher in a completely non-glamorous avatar.

Music for this film has been composed by Mahesh Chinar and lyrics are by Chandrashekhar Sanekar. Hariharan and Mahalaxmi Ayyar has sung the songs. The story and screenplay has been written by Deepak BHagwat an Vijay Mishra is the DOP.
