Review:

In today’s era of Facebook, the mention of Slam Book brings a dose of nostalgia and so does Ruturaj Dhalgade’s movie of the same name. Slam Book is a heartwarming and entertaining take on teenage love of the bygone era. Yes, 15 years ago is a bygone era since the world around us has changed drastically since the arrival of the internet at the start of the new millennium.

The film is based in the year 2000 in Aurangabad, where Hruday (Shantanu Rangnekar) is staying with his maternal uncle and aunt. A new family shifts to the house opposite theirs. Hruday instantly falls for the young girl from the family, Aparna (Ritika Shrotri). He is encouraged in his pursuits by his maternal grandfather (Dilip Prabhavalkar). Will Hruday succeed in winning his love?

Slam Book is an example of a sweet and lighthearted tale oozing simplicity and honesty. Normally, such tales are narrated in a span of two hours but Slam Book goes beyond. However, you don’t feel the length due to a smart screenplay and witty dialogues thereby providing light-hearted entertainment. The film shows that even the simplest of situations can provide lot of laughter.

The basic tale over here has a lot of similarities with Ravi Jadhav’s Timepass. The characters and situations also look inspired from them. But, apart from treatment, there is a difference between both the films. Slam Book is a more sensible take on teenage love. However, the film falls short of being superlative.

Apart from being predictable at times, the ending portions don’t provide the kind of satisfaction one expects after such an interesting ride. Something appears amiss. They could have at least solved one misunderstanding (can’t reveal more to avoid spoilers).

The music contains some simple and soft romantic numbers complement the theme. The track ‘Morya’, featuring Shruti Marathe, is also impressive. The camerawork and background score go well with the simplicity of the content.

Shantanu Rangnekar displays the right mannerisms and behavior needed from a mischievous love-struck teenager. Ritika Shrotri is adorable as Aparna. Dilip Prabhavalkar is once again reliable. Siddharth Menon, playing the elder Hruday, shows a lot of maturity. He deserves to be seen more. The same can be said about the girl playing the elder Aparna. The rest of the actors provide good to decent support.

Overall:

Slam Book can be seen once for the nostalgia it provides. With not much hype, the film needs urgent word-of-mouth to make any mark at the box office.

The love story of Marathi Movie ‘Slambook’ is based in the early 2000’s – the age of landlines. The concept of Slambooks was at its peak in the early 2000s for teenagers. Director, Ruturaj Dhalgade has portrayed this story with new teenage actors – Shantanu Rangnekar and Ritika Shrotri. The film releases on 21st of August, 2015. The film is produced by Surekha Dhalgade, Ruturaj Dhalgade and co-produced by Rohit Mhatre.

The cast of the movie includes renowned actors like Dilip Prabhavalkar, Usha Nadkarni, Mangesh Desai, Madhavi Soman, Kushal Bhadrike, Supriya Pathare, Abhijeet Chavan, Yogesh Thirsat, Shruti Marathe.

Actor Shreyas Talpade was present at the special screening of Marathi film ‘Siddhant’ and was completely floored by the film. The emotional drama features an adolescent boy played by Archit Dewadhar, his struggle with mathematics and other close relationships.

Shreyas told media, “I love watching good films and Siddhant is a great film combined with amazing performances.”

One of the pivotal characters of the grandfather is played by legendary actor across Marathi and Hindi films, Vikram Gokhale. An ardent fan of Gokhale since childhood, Shreyas said, “I don’t have the right to comment on a legend like Gokhale’s performance. We’ve grown up watching him in plays, television and films and as usual he is fantastic in Siddhant.”

Shreyas was particularly impressed with the subject of the movie. He explains, “It’s a combination of various relationships, one is of a grandfather-grandson relationship and another about brother bonding. In a way, it is also an underdog story. The manner in which the makers have given closure to the subject is something we should all learn from.”

The film has been selected as Official Film at prestigious festivals IFFSA Toronto, New York Film Festival and Mumbai Film Festival. It is directed by Vivek Wagh and the makers were previously associated with critically acclaimed films, Fandry and Shala. Madhavi Soman, Sarang Sathaye and Swati Chitnis among others play crucial roles.

The grand music launch function of ‘Siddhant’ was recently held amidst the august gathering of actors Vikram Gokhale, Swati Chitnis, Kishor Kadam, Ganesh Yadav, Sarang Sathaye, Neha Mahajan, Madhavi Soman, Chandrashekhar Kulkarni, Prashant Tapasvi, Suraj Satav, Baba Afle, and Kanchan Jadhav. The evening was regaled by the singing of Shankar Mahadevan and Makarand Deshpande with lyrics like ‘Thodese Guntlele’ ani Ghatt Kahi Sutle’ written by Soumitra aka Kishore Kadam and composed by Shailendra Barve and both the singers confessed that the songs were the soul of the film. And the film is making waves on foreign shores like the selection for Toronto International Film Festival of South America (IFFSA) and the New York Film Festival .

The film revolves around a grandson Vakratund Deodhar played Archit Devdhar and his grandfather Appa Thosar played by Vikram Gokhale and the thin thread of relationship between them and their performances are the crowning glory of the film. The director Vivek Wagh thanked the cast and the producers for showing confidence and implicit trust in a debutante director like him . Vivek who till now has been the Executive Producer in many successful films like Ringa Ringaa, Checkmate, Ajinkya, Shala, Fandry , expressed that direction has given him a different sensibility from producing which has really touched him. Producer Kajaria said that film is a medium of social change and the mirror of society and it is their endevour to present a film which gives out a message to society and Siddhanth has done precisely that and the entire team is responsible for taking this film to a glorious high.
