Review: Dokyala Shot
Cast: Suvrat Joshi, Prajakta Mali, Ganesh Pandit, Omkar Govardhan, Rohit Haldikar & Sameer Choughule
Director: Shivkumar Parthasarathy

Viewpoint: ‘Dokyala Shot’ has a certain sense of novelty to it, because of it’s overall tone of comedy which mixes situational humor & slapstick humor together but the convenient turns it takes in the narrative are totally devoid of logic. Even if it’s intentional it keeps bothering us as more work on the script could have easily made the film lot more interesting.

What Works?

  • The film’s lead cast is of four friends out of whom one (Suvrat Joshi) is suffering from retrograde amnesia (temporary memory loss). His friends played by Ganesh Pandit, Rohit Haldikar & Omkar Govardhan are somehow responsible for this condition and are now trying to make him alright. And all of this has happened just before two days of his wedding! The first half is full of sublime performances of all the four actors. The chemistry between them is instantly believable.
  • The dialogue writing compliments the performances which makes many little moments (especially in the first half) uniquely hilarious.
  • There’s one quality of a good situational comedy that the characters in the situation are actually very serious & the situation itself is a serious situation for them, but for the audiences those situations are presented such that they become funny. Here too this seriousness part is very effective. We understand that for the characters this isn’t all fun & games!
  • There’s an undertone of a slight psychological suspense drama in the first half that is well included in the film through it’s treatment.

What Fails?

  • The second half is extremely overstretched & that too in situations that are lesser important in the narrative.
  • There’s a certain style of repetitive humor in the film, which is fine, & it even works well a couple of times but the film keeps overdoing it. Then it becomes a drag & the title of the film becomes our condition!
  • As said earlier the narrative is conveniently designed just to makes certain situations happen, it is totally devoid of logic. We do understand that for a comedy of this kind logic can’t be a criteria to judge but still there’s a limit to the liberty one can take in this department.
  • This film is an official remake of a Tamil film, while we are not sure if the original film had something to say through the film, but here we surely saw a possibility. It definitely isn’t a rule that a film should have something to say but when the film falters as an ‘entertainer’ we do look for a message or a statement & especially when the film is said to be based on a real incident!

Final Verdict: ‘Dokyala Shot’ surely deserves one watch as this is a fresh kind of humor for the Marathi audiences. While this film isn’t totally a great film the debutante director of the film Shivkumar Parthasarathy has shown a glimpse of his talent, which makes us anticipate for the movies he might come up with in the future.

Andya Cha Funda Marathi Movie Review :

Films that star kids in lead roles are very sensitive in general. Pulling out natural performances from them is a skill. Very few directors are truly good at it. So the point is watching the kids in Andya Cha Funda perform is an exhausting experience. And we can’t even see anything wrong with the kids. It’s the makers who deserve the blame. But again this is one of the many errors this film has.

One peculiar thing that can be observed about many such interesting but half baked ideas. Many of these stories seems to have initiated from the climax. And the rest of the story is constructed based on it. While doing so, many set pieces too are added. Many of these makers tend to believe too much in their climax & it’s impact. They forget the fact that the audience would lose their interest in the film until reaching the climax. The same is the case with Andya Cha Funda. Somewhere in the late second half we find something interesting, but it’s too late.

As the trailer suggests the film’s lead are the two kids Andya (Atharva) & Fundya (Falgun).  Atharva belongs to a wealthy family which lives in a lavish beach house (supposedly in Madh). Fundya is a kid from the nearby slum. So it’s Andya & Fundya against the world. Fundya has some intuitions (of sorts) & he shouts in pain as his head seems to be in too much pain. (Nothing of it is explained, whether his parents ever felt a need to consult a doctor too is not mentioned, instead his father considers his ‘dreams’ as one of his mischiefs.)

Now the conflict of the film arrives when Fundya dies, hit by a truck, when he visits konkan with his parents. Just after that Fundya appears in front of Andya, but clueless & then suddenly he remembers everything. Now this is concerned with Andya’s mother Kumud (Deepa Parab). More description would be a spoiler.

So with that the film has suddenly turned into a mystery thriller. The further actions take place at a village in Konkan. But the film wastes just too much time when it shifts to Konkan. Mrunal Jadhav the popular child artists joins Andya & Fundya in their mission & makes the whole thing even more unbearable.

But then arrives an essential flashback sequence, which could have saved the film had it arrived at least 45 minutes earlier. Sandesh Kulkarni a truly talented actor shines in whatever chance he gets to save this sinking ship (the film). Some scenes here are technically good & bring in the thrill factor. But not good enough to improve the film overall.

By the way the film also stars Sushant Shelar & Arun Nalawade. Arun Nalawade gives a perfect anti-climax to the film & unintentionally a few laughs.

The cinematography of this film is decent in it’s aesthetics but cluelessly keeps giving us top angle shots for no specific reason. The main issue with this film is not that it fails as a mystery, rather it fails by misusing it’s title characters. The chemistry between them has no heartfelt moments, or truly funny incidents. It fails here, to establish the lead characters & develop a connect with the audience.

Few years back we had one well made children adventure-mystery film “Chintoo 2”. The reason to it’s success was that it treated kids like kids! It had a compact, to the point plot & even with poor special effects the film essentially entertained.

Overall:

If you’re planning to watch this film with or for your kids, think again they might get bored!

Deepa Parab-Chaudhari is one of the few actresses who have always been in audience memory even after being very selective about her work. She has been active in different mediums of entertainment in both Hindi as well as Marathi. She is all set to make a comeback in the role of a mother in upcoming fantasy Marathi film ‘Andya Cha Funda’.

Andya Cha Funda is your comeback film. What is it that excited you to act in this film?

It’s a mystery film. The content of the film is too strong since the film is written by Ganesh Pandit, Ambar Hadap & Shripad. I knew that the writers are good, the director is good so I took this film!

You’ve worked in all mediums of entertainment from theatre to serials, films & even ad films. You started from inter-collegiate theatre! Would you like to make a comeback on stage?

I would love to, but practically speaking my child is very small right now so it won’t be possible. But yes theatre is close to me & in the future I would definitely like to be a part of good project in theatre.

This film has an exciting ‘fantasy’ element. Do you think such films should be made more in Marathi?

I don’t know whether such films should be made more or not, But I believe that Marathi audiences like films with good content even if it’s a fantasy film. Looking at today’s trend where people from outside the industry too are quite impressed, & are eager to work here.

Deepa Chaudhari & Atharva Bedekar - Andya Cha Funda StillYou’ve acted in many Hindi serials a few years back. Do you anything has changed in Hindi serials today or in general serials of today?

The last serial I did was ‘Thodi Khushi Thoda Gum’ & now 8 years post that, I don’t how many things have changed. But I change that is easily recognizable is that the sets have travelled from Goregaon to Mira Road & Bhayandar! Though our T.V. has become technically more advanced now & many other good changes too have occurred.

But what about the shooting schedule? Is there any difference in ‘then’ & ‘now’? Is it more hectic now?

Not just now, back then too, the shooting schedule was equally hectic. But I remember my call time used to be of 9 in the morning. And when you’re on time early they leave you early too. And I have been very passionate about my work, so all those hours weren’t stressful. I’m a early morning bird, I can get up early but I have to be home early too.

Tell us about your experience of working with the child artists who star in ‘Andya Cha Funda’.

They are very natural. I enjoyed working with them. Overall today’s generation is too advanced. We can’t really call them small children, they are so matured! Just as the camera starts rolling they are so amazing in their work. Their awareness of their dialogues, their sense of humour all of it is so amazing. There are so many things to learn from them.

Finally, what you think would the audience love about ‘Andya Cha Funda’?

The audiences would definitely love the film. Along with the children it’s for adults too. Just like friendship is an important aspect of the film, so is the mother-son relationship. A son’s struggle for his mother is depicted really well in the film. ‘Andya Cha Funda’ is a complete package. There’s fantasy, there’s family entertainment & all these aspects will definitely be loved by the audiences.

Marathi cinema though is well-known for it diverse subjects, not many times do we see a genuine fantasy film. Andya Cha Funda is an upcoming Marathi which looks to be an healthy exception here. A beautiful story about two friends in which one friend has unfulfilled wish & the other helps him complete it. The other friend of course is no longer alive, but is a spirit.

Technically the film looks beautiful & the natural beauty of Konkan region only adds to the overall finesse of the film. The child artists also seem to be playing their characters with great understanding & sensibility.

Andya Cha Funda is set to release on 30th June. Which means our family audiences can replenish their holiday memories while watching this film. Though there is also a darker context to the film, its presentation seems to be kid-friendly & even emotionally involving for adult audiences.
