Nagraj Manjule starer, Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti directorial ‘Naal‘ has collected 14 Crores in its opening weekend which is the biggest opening a Marathi film has received post ‘Sairat’! It has also become this year’s highest grossing Marathi film! Zee Studios have released the film across the country including Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Surat, Vadodara, and Chennai with subtitles for non-Marathi viewers!

Producer and actor Nagraj Manjule said, “ I’m overwhelmed with the response by the audience. It is almost as if there is a renaissance across the Marathi cinema; the success of this film is definably a triumph of the art.”

Quick Viewpoint: After the super success of ‘Sairat’ Nagraj Manjule (as actor & producer) & Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti (cinematographer & director) have again collaborated through ‘Naal’, though in different roles! And in my opinion they have altogether given a complete cinematic experience that also connects emotionally with the audiences taking Marathi cinema to new heights!

What Fails?

• Absolutely nothing fails here!!

What Works?

• Naal dwells on the meaning of motherhood. While doing so it keeps the audiences with the boy & not with the mother. Letting us understand what the boy is going through! And how he perceives his mother & motherhood in a larger way!

• Naal captures the essence of childhood curiosity & innocence in a way which was never seen before in a Marathi film.
• Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti succeeds magnificently in executing film’s each & every aspect. Including acting of the little kid (Shrinivas Pokale) & every other aspect!
• Up until the first half the film reaches the most beautiful form of simplicity. But in the later half it goes places where very few Marathi films manage to go! It creates an everlasting bittersweet emotionally ambiguous atmosphere using the same setting that was explored for a sweet little feel good film!
• It now dwells on life in a larger way creating a symphony between birth & death. It understands the meaninglessness of life yet embraces it with both hands, lovingly! The last Marathi film that I was reminded of that gave a similar experience, was Umesh Kulkarni’s Vihir.
• Though different from films of this kind, it doesn’t question the norms of life & hence it is never about finding answers. Those films don’t provide specific answers either, but they dwell on questions more specifically. In Naal, both the question & the answers are blurred & the film still beautifully acknowledges their existence.

Final Verdict: ‘Naal’ has opened to a great response from the audiences & it succeeds in enthralling them & also encouraging them to interpret cinema on their own. Knowing things on their own, without being spoon feed, which is a rare achievement in our films!

Pari Hoon Main Review (Marathi Movie):

‘Pari Hoon Main’ belongs to a group of films where the positives & the negatives both are the exact same! I mean the film will appeal more to the family audiences who are usually exposed to television, the shallow treatment to the theme wouldn’t matter much to the audiences who are used to hammering the same thing over & over again. The theme & the basic story is certainly interesting, unique & yet relatable to the current times. But the film doesn’t go beyond the basic, it keeps running around the bush with multiple scenes & sequences designed to hammer the same things that have been said earlier.

One important issue here is the execution of the world of television! It just doesn’t make sense that such films or serials can’t project their own world anywhere close to reality. The shooting set of a huge Hindi serial, where a majority of the film is based never really feels like a real set. The journey of a kid from a small skit on school stage to the Hindi serial never lets us see the talent in her, it’s almost taken from granting that the little girl is just born talented & she doesn’t even need to prove it to the film audiences.

The trailer of the film tells the entire plot in the exact order as it occurs in the film. And there are absolutely no surprises in the narrative of the actual film too. Yet after all these points mentioned ‘Pari Hoon Main’ will instantly strike a chord with our middle-class dreams & aspirations that today’s parents have for their kids. The whole dilemma of how would a celebrity kid manage to still enjoy the little pleasures of the growing up days is also equally relatable.

What the film tries to say about temporary fame & how it’s disappearance affects little children is right in theory but the point appears silly due to the execution. Nandu Madhav & Devika Daftardar as the parents of the little girl are the strongest positives of the film. They have an instant chemistry together & with the girl that quickly makes the little family believable. In the past 2-3 years or so Nandu Madhav seems to have consciously made film choices with criteria of them being majorly family oriented & concerning kids. It’s, in fact, a commendable thing for a Marathi actor to be so planned & thoughtful in his choices. Devika Daftardar being a regular in the Bhave-Sukthankar films has hardly been seen in films of other filmmakers, here she never feels like a misfit. It would be pleasing to see an actor of her caliber more often in the mainstream.

The music of the film is just like the music of many recent forgettable films, it is soothing to the ears when it comes in the film & beyond that, it just doesn’t survive, it doesn’t stay in our memory for long after the film is over. This is a major concern in today’s Marathi film music.

‘Pari Hoon Main’ could have definitely been a better film had it worked on the layers in the basic story & worked harder on its execution, but it could have also been a much worse film if it hadn’t been as compact as it is in the narrative.

Overall:

I was reminded of the recent disaster ‘Truckbhar Swapna’ which wanted to achieve tonnes of things & failed miserably without achieving anything. So ‘Pari Hoon Main’ has at least achieved considerable things that can interest a major group of the audiences.

Kaasav Marathi Movie Review :

Earlier this year Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar were honored with the most important film award for a film in India the Golden Lotus for ‘Kaasav’. Many film lovers felt they were honored as more on the basis of their phenomenal career as filmmakers then specifically for ‘Kaasav’. I had seen the film at a festival last year & felt maybe it wasn’t their best film. But now in the second viewing I loved the film more. It is probably their finest film!

The idea of using an animal as a metaphor to a different conflict is not new to Marathi films. The best of the lot could be ‘Valu’. Even the other two films of the makers ‘Astu’ & ‘Devrai’ which are also about mental disorders make use of metaphors, though in case of ‘Devrai’ it wasn’t an animal but the Devrai tree. Here the ‘Kaasav’ symbolizes a young boy ‘Manav’ (Alok Rajwade) who is suffering from depression. While watching this film the audiences need to understand that depression is not a state of mind. And it’s not because something bad has happened to the character. Once you accept the existence of depression this film will open up your mind.

Janaki (Irawati Harshe) finds Manav stranded on the roads. Accompanied by her help (Kishore Kadam) she brings him home, a beach house. Post that almost throughout we can hear the waves at the seashore. Janaki sees herself in Manav, as she once suffered from depression, she could relate the nothingness inside Manav. Even now Janaki suffers from panic attacks once in a while. The reason she was in this small village by the sea is because her doctor/councilor told her to find a project, in a sense a purpose. The purpose that Janaki finds is helping Datta Bhau (Dr. Mohan Agashe) in his work of sea turtle conservation! So in a way she is conserving two turtles at a time!

The way the film keeps relating the turtle project with the condition of Manav is in a way cathartic. It’s a time consuming process that would help find these turtles a life & Manav a new life. In the second viewing the character played by Kishore Kadam & a little kid who sells tea at the nearby S.T. depot makes me understand the hidden lessons of philosophy imbibed in this film. Around the climax of this film Manav accompanies this kid (who has now become his good friend) to a place. This little journey that they make completes a circle in Manav’s life & in the film. The way Kishore Kadam, a simple minded servant, looks at Manav’s depression & Janaki’s efforts towards helping Manav out of it reflects how a common man would look at depression. However when the servant tries understanding Manav & his conflict we see that he gets it! He gets it in his own way.

Just like the characters & the metaphor the sea & the beach play a vital role in this film. This is without a doubt the most visually stunning film made by the duo. There are two songs in this film that have the musical form of this film’s soul. Especially ‘Leher Samandar Re’ that again reminds us of the cathartic nature of this film. While ‘Astu’ was lot more complexly philosophical ‘Kaasav’ is more simplistically philosophical. However it’s difficult to choose between the two. What’s need to be noted is that even after spending so many years in filmmaking Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar have an urge to adapt new things & keep improving the cinematic richness of their films, which is a rare quality in Marathi industry!

Overall:

‘Kaasav’ is a film that needs patient. Just like a dialogue in this film, we have eyes, we have ears, but we still need to learn seeing & hearing. To those who have learned it ‘Kaasav’ is a must watch, & to those who are now willing to learn it ‘Kaasav’ is the perfect film to begin with.
