Nikhil Mahajan’s Baji achieves a rare feat of being a powerful action saga narrated and crafted in an artistic way. It is a benchmark of sorts for Marathi cinema when it comes to presenting a story. However, the film doesn’t rise as much as you expect after a brilliant first half due to various reasons. But there is enough in Baji for the masses to savor it.

Baji is based in the village of Shrigangpur, where Chidu (Shreyas Talpade) lives a simple life with his mother. Chidu is honest but lags behind in intelligence and bravery. This is the reason why he doesn’t find acceptance from the girl he is madly in love with – his childhood friend Gauri (Amruta Khanvilkar). The village is also known because of the savior Baji, who is believed to exist decades ago.

But there are some like Chidu who don’t believe such tales. But Gauri is a firm believer in Baji as the hero had saved her life during her childhood. She has been in love with Baji ever since and is still waiting for him. Chidu is eager to be her Baji but will he succeed? Meanwhile, Martand (Jitendra Joshi), a harmless villager, turns into a greedy devil when he comes to know that tons of gold lies underneath the land of Shrirangpur.

Baji is a rare example of a close to three hour movie that doesn’t force you to look at the clock even once. As far as the first half is concerned, the fascinating and intriguing storyline, creative narration and Mahajan’s mature handling of the subject leave you super-impressed! The shadow fighting sequence is a sheer pleasure and it deserves special mention. At this point itself you realize the film is an achievement for Marathi cinema.

But alas, things aren’t so similar in the second half. Although it continues to be a well-shot entertaining affair till the end, it is the twist that plays spoilsport. After such an out-of-the-box first half, you really don’t expect the story to tread on the age old, tried-and-tested formula lines, but this is exactly what happens. In fact, the basic plot is almost the same as that of a Marathi film released not-so-long-ago, which itself was a mish-mash of a number of Hindi films.

Vasu Rane’s camerawork plays a large role in making Baji look like an international product. Be in the picturesque locales of Konkan or the high octane action sequences, he excels throughout. The background score and editing also make sure the final product turns out to be technically impressive. Atif Afzal joins the party too with well composed tracks, from which the title song is the best of all.

The film will also be remembered for its action and stunts, especially the train sequence. However, the use of a huge hammer to beat up could have been avoided. Such visuals can’t be digested by a large section of the audience since the film is aimed at people of all age groups.

Coming to the performances, this film required Shreyas Talpade to give his best performance till date and he does that. This act also adds on to his versatility since he manages to excel even in this genre. Jitendra Joshi matches up to him with an excellent, powerful villainous act. This will surely be one of his most talked about act always.

Amruta Khanvilkar too displays her talent playing a tough village belle. Actors playing Chidu’s friend and mother too play their parts well. Nagraj Manjule (director of Fandry) scores in a cameo.

Overall:

Baji is an entertainer worth your time and money. It also ensures Nikhil Mahajan to be a lookout for the future. With the tremendous hype and its commercial nature, it is most likely to be a box office success.

Baji is all getting ready for its release. The Item Song of The year, Masoli, has also been on top of the charts. The sensuous song is sung by Bela Shende and been picturized on Shruti Marathe. After doing some sizzling magical dance performances in South, this will be Shruti’s first item song in Marathi films.
Here is some little chat bits with Shruti about this song.

What was your reaction when Masoli song was offered to you?

I have always done serious and sober roles in Marathi, be it film or television. I wanted to do something fun and dhamaal. Masoli was a perfect song for me. After listening to this song, I immediately liked it and said, let’s do it! However, that does not mean that I will keep doing such dance numbers in future. I should be able to enjoy my work, that’s my main criteria.

How was your experience while shooting for this song?

I have done dance numbers in south. However, this was my first Marathi dance song. We had rehearsed a lot and I was confident about it. We shot entire song in just two days, as preparation was very good and there were no technical glitches in production. I really admired the way shoots were planned and executed.

Any amusing moment while shooting this song?

Yeah, I didn’t realise this while shooting, but after finishing the shoot I went home and as usual took a shower. My eyes were red and swollen. The smoke of that fire while shooting went into my eyes and nose. While shooting, it never bothers you as you are completely engrossed in your work, after going home, you realise what it actually was. It was hilarious for my family as well. It took three days to get my eyes normal.

Any Upcoming projects?

I have done a Hindi film tentatively titled “Wonder Boy” I have finished shooting for my part and post-production is going on. Additionally, I am doing a very different film with Mahesh Manjrekar. There are some other offers as well. Lets see!

Which medium you like more for working, you have done TV, films and theatre?

It is very difficult to say. I have done daily soaps. Currently I am doing theatre. Also, I have been working on films. I like all these mediums, each medium has its own strong and weak points. I prefer working in films, but theatre is more engaging and intriguing.

Marathi film industry is becoming more and more glamorous…

That’s good. We have a fine balance of content-driven and market driven films. I think this balance should continue in future. We should have more solid scripts and also we should have more glamorous content as well.

2. Nikhil Mahajan has earlier directed Pune 52. Though the film was not very successful on Box office, critics had loved this film. This time Nikhil is back with Baji, a superhero film. Hollywood has loved its superheroes. Bollywood has started this trend with Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish. However, for Marathi films, this is a big budget super hero film. Audience can expect a roller coaster ride of entertainment from Baji for sure.

3. Stunt Silva, a name known for fantastic action sequences has done stunts for Baji. Stunt Silva has earlier done thrillers like 3, Thalaiva, Jilla in Tamil. He has also done stunts for Malayalam and Telugu movies. Baji will be his first Marathi film. The film has some unusual fight sequences such as shadow fighting. It will be great to watch such stunts in Marathi.

4. Glamour. Amruta Khanvilkar will be seen in this film sans her diva image. She has not used any make up for this film. Although looking at promos and songs, one can definitely say this girl knows how to look glamorous even without makeup. Also, Shruti Marathe’s item number “Masoli” has added glamour quotient of the film. The film is rumoured to have some cameos by other actresses as well.

5. Jitendra Joshi. What can we say more about this actor! Be it serious, comic or villainous roles, he knows how to deliver. His penchant for role of baddies has given us Duniyadari. Now he is ready to take up against our Superhero Baji. Jitu has shaved his head, puffed his muscles and done many other things to get this Supervillain. Martand looks not only bad, but very very bad in the promos. Audience will be in treat to watch these two talented actors against each other.

Shreyas Talpade-starrer Marathi film “Baji“, a superhero entertainer, will feature a unique shadow fight sequence.

In order to make the scene look interesting, action directors Stunt Silva and Nikhil Mahajan came up with the idea of shadow fighting. The scenes are shot in such a way that the action is showcased via shadows.
Though the whole sequence was difficult to shoot, the way it was executed is something which will pique the audiences’ interest.

Shreyas is all praise for the act.

“When Stunt Silva and Nikhil Mahajan told me about the idea of shadow fighting, I was very excited and it was something which I have never done before and was challenging. In order to get the sequence correct, we had done intense training not only practising shadow fighting but also my body posture, my stance and sword training,” Shreyas said in a statement.

The film boasts some never before seen action sequences. All the stunts in the film have been performed by Shreyas himself.

Baji, the lead character, is an action-adventure laced superhero-vigilante who takes it upon himself to protect the common man against oppression and injustice in this small village of Shrirangpur.

Nobody can be a superhero, if super villain is not in the picture. For a impeccable superhero, you need a menacing villain. For Baji, first Marathi superhero, Martand is such super villain. Jitendra Joshi who has earlier done a negative character in college drama Duniyadari, Baji was a different game altogether. He has done everything for this role, from working out a fabulous bod to shaving his head. His sweet and poetic looks are gone and scary wicked smile is gripping Marathi audience. In this interview with us, Jitu spoke about his experience for working this super film.

How was your experience of working in this big budget movie?

I consider this as my luck to be able to work in this film. Most of the time especially in Marathi films there are many big budget films where budget can be seen only on paper. While watching that movie on screen does not present any budget at all. That is not the case with Baji. In Baji you can see where the money has been spent. For example, Shreyas has been cast as lead role. Shreyas will not do any low budget film. He is a big star! Jokes apart, the film is big budget because the story and its presentation requires all such elements. Producers have not spent money on frivolous things, but they have made sure that production values are up to the mark. When you see the film, you will understand why this film needed more budget.

How was your experience working in a negative character?

Earlier, I did a negative character in Duniyadari. That was a smashing hit, but I enjoyed working. Sometimes you do a film for money sometimes you do a film because you enjoy that type of working. Baji had given me both these satisfaction. Professionally, it is a very good opportunity and at the same time, as an artiste it has fulfilled me internally. This is taking me one step ahead in my career. Martand could have been portrayed in many ways. But Nikhil knew how he would like this character on screen, I liked his vision. When you trust your director, your job becomes very easy. The character of Martand is completely different in first half and second half. Also, working with Shreyas was a bonus. I hope this will give me more recognition.

Tell us about Nikhil Mahajan and his working style.

Some directors are good in improvisation, some are good in story-telling, and some can do amazing shot division. Nikhil is master in all these things. He knows what will be clicked at the box office. Look at the music of this film. The music director is not Marathi, yet Nikhil has done an astonishing job of getting perfect music from him. When I heard two songs of this film, I immediately disliked them. However, when you see these songs in the film I understood why these songs are in such way. When they came with visuals came that total impact was different. It just fits beautifully in the picture. Nikhil knows the pulse of audience. Baji songs are already chartbusters. Nikhil knew what he wanted and how he wanted.

Tell us something more about your co-stars.

Shreyas is such a down to earth person. Even after being so successful in Bollywood and Marathi, he is still that simple and sweet guy. He has never allowed his fame to get in his head. His hard work dedication and simplicity are things I would like to imbibe in me. Working with Amruta was a different experience. Amruta is a successful actress, but this film has given her a chance to showcase her talent. We will see her in a never seen avatar for this film. She has been known for her glamorous roles. In this film she has faced without any makeup. That was actually relieving for us, as we did not have to wait even for once “Madam ka touch up karana hai” She was always ready on the sets. That was really delightful experience. The action sequences of this film are highlight. We had Stunt Silva, a famous action director from South for this film. I can vouch that Marathi films never had such action scenes till date. Shreyas had many injuries while shooting for this film.

How different is Jitendra Joshi in real life from Martand?

I don’t think I can relate to Martand in any way. Any actor comes into this profession because he wants to be somebody else. Living another person’s life is every actor’s dream. No actor would like to live like his characters. Shreyas can not ride one horse everyday, that’s why he does Baji. This villain Martand is such a violent person, I cannot tolerate this much violence. But still if you look everywhere violence is present. As an actor I can reflect such violence through my acting. If I Had to do roles just like myself wouldn’t that be very boring?
