After seeing the stories of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj & Sambhaji Maharaj over the years in different serials, plays & films we are now finally getting a chance to know more about the one great mother who created these kings & made them brave from their childhoods! Jijamata! We have seen actresses like Mrunal Kulkarni & Prateeksha Lonkar play her role in different films and shows before but now a brand new serial is all set to commence on Sony Marathi titled ‘Swarajya Janani Jijamata’!

Audiences and the whole entertainment industry is all excited for this new serial & are eager to know which actress will be playing Jijamata in this serial! These are the 5 actresses out of which we think one would be starring in this serial!

Mukta Barve

Mukta Barve has always proved her credibility as an actress over the years through her diverse performances. For an actress of her calibre returning back to T.V. has to be very special & hence we believe she would be perfect in the role of a strong yet soft hearted Jijamata!

Urmila Kanitkar Kothare

Another solid actress who has taken a break from acting for some time now & hence we feel this would be the right role for her to be back in audience’s eyes!

Sai Tamhankar

A true blue modern day female star! But as we are aware of, Sai’s acting abilities can help her transform into any character that comes her way. And she has a habit of giving her 100% for every character!

Girija Oak Godbole

One of the most underrated actresses working in the Marathi industry. We believe Jijamata’s role could be that one role that would finally give her talent the well deserved due!

Amruta Subhash

From Shwas to Gully Boy this Marathi actress has come a long way! But she first became popular among the audiences through the small screen. We wish she would return to the small screen some day & believe that ‘Swarajya Janani Jijamata’ could just be the right vehicle for that to happen!

Who among these actresses you think would be or should be playing Jijamata’s role in the upcoming Sony Marathi serial? Or do you have any other actresses in mind! Whatever the case let us know through your comments!

Ziprya Review (Marathi Movie):

Based on a novel of an acclaimed Marathi writer ‘Arun Sadhu’, ‘Ziprya’ is a film that manages to only give little glimpses of the actual world the story was set in. Firstly the film has no understanding of a cinematic structure in the screenplay. It feels abrupt from the beginning & ends on even more abrupt note.

There’s something inherently connectable about films that manage to capture the essence of Mumbai’s actual heart. It all started with one of the finest films ever made anywhere, Mira Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ to the recent Rajnikant epic ‘Kaala’ & many films in between. But then by default these films don’t become great just because of the subject! There’s a whole lot of expertise required to be perfected especially in this genre.

One of it is acting. Acting is not just connected to the talent of an actor but also to the choices they make along with the director, the choice of casting & finally the overall effect of all of it on the backdrop of the film. There’s just not enough coherence here in the overall effect. Amruta Subhash as ‘Leela’ looks a straight miscast playing the elder sister of ‘Ziprya’. Some scenes seem so serial-like & never remind us of the harsher reality on which they are based.

The original novel was published in 1990 but was set in the late 70s to early 80s. Now this film is clearly set in today’s times. But still we see a Amitabh Bachchan fanboy (Aslam played by Prathamesh Parab) reciting dialogues from ‘Deewar’ (1975). While on the other hand he also mentions Salman Khan! None of the main characters behave like they belong in today’s times. We see the kids selling mobile covers, but we never see them using a mobile!

Ziprya (Chinmay Kambli) and his boot polish gang do not create any emotional connection with the audiences, mainly because they never seem like real characters. The background score & the songs don’t help here, instead keep us even more distant from them. Still the only clear positive of the film is the locations where the film is shot. This is unfiltered Mumbai! If the makers managed to shoot at such real locations, more work on the script could have easily made ‘Ziprya’ an effective experience.

The performances in the film are not bad when looked individually but as said earlier the effect isn’t coherent in the context of the overall film. Prathamesh Parab’s ‘Aslam’ is made the centre of attention by the end of the film, for no real reason. Maybe the only logical explanation to this is that since Aslam was played by the most popular actor in the cast! Throughout it’s Parab’s performance that irritates us the most, we have seen him do the same thing so many times now!

Chinmay Kambli who plays Ziprya was earlier seen in the extremely effective feel good film about ‘farmer suicides’, ‘Jhing Chik Jhing’. He was very effective back then as a child artist, not now. Saksham Kulkarni’s performance is the only one that makes some impact on us, but sadly his character is left in between the film, & then suddenly brought back later.

It has been proved countless times before, that a highly relevant subject doesn’t process itself into a highly relevant film by default & it’s proved again. It needs better cinematic understanding & an approach to get precise performances from the cast.

Overall:

It’s an easier choice to make between ‘Ziprya’ the novel & ‘Ziprya’ the film for the audiences who really are excited by the idea & premise of this story.

Some writers have such a great following that their works represent a complete generation of our culture. Arun Sadhu was one such writer in Marathi literature. His novels like ‘Sinhasan’, ‘Mumbai Dinank’ & ‘Ziprya’ have become immortal in Marathi culture. So ever since the news of a film based on ‘Ziprya’ novel was out audiences were excited.

Now the trailer is out & the film looks like a good enough adaptation of the novel. While the original story was based in Mumbai a few decades earlier, this film seems to have converted it to today’s times. Sadly even now the state of Mumbai is no different. In fact, the story has become even more relevant in today’s times, as the people living in slums & on the footpaths have only increased in number.

The film stars known faces like Amruta Subhash, Prathamesh Parab & Pravin Tarde along with other new actors too, who look convincing in their part. The film is set to release in theatres on 22nd June in theatres all over Maharashtra. After a long time, we will see a film in theatres which showcases the reality of Mumbai & tells the story of the poor & the downtrodden.

Ti Ani Itar Marathi Movie Review :

Adapting a play into a film is always tricky! Many a times the story has the potential of a film within it, but very few times the makers manage to explore that potential. Among the many play to film adaptations in Marathi of recent times ‘Lalbaug Parel’ (adapted from Adhantar) & ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’ could be considered to be successful to some extent in exploring this potential. But in the first place these plays had that kind of canvas, which would suit a film. Even a play like ‘Natsamrat’ had that canvas. But ‘Lights Out’ (from which ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is adapted) seems to be a play that is strictly a play and doesn’t really give much scope for its canvas to be expanded for a film.

Hence it becomes obligatory for ‘Ti Ani Itar’ to be in the same compact ‘play like’ form to keep the soul of the story & its commentary intact. This film is directed by one of the most respected Indian filmmakers Govind Nihalani. Nihalani started out being a cinematographer & most of the times shot his directorials himself alike ‘Ti Ani Itar’. The point is that even after being a cinematographer Govind Nihalani’s films have always been ‘compact’.

Sonali KUlkarni & Subodh Bhave in ti ani itarThe story is simple & takes place in a couple of hours. Anirudh Godbole (Subodh Bhave) & Naina Godbole (Sonali Kulkarni) belong to the upper class & live in a lavish flat. They have two little daughters. They have arranged a small get together for a few close friends (Amruta Subhash, Bhushan Pradhan, Priya Marathe & Avishkar Darwhekar) for celebrating the launch of Naina’s (who is a singer) latest music album. In the midst of that, suddenly they start hearing a girl screaming. Naina & Anirudh reveals that this screaming has been happening for a couple of weeks now!

At this point we as audiences expect an immediate action. Amruta Subhash portrays a responsible journalist, & many a times our expectations are mentioned by her character. But the point this film tries to make can’t be made if there’s an immediate action! This restlessness that we undergo as viewers is the basic aim of this story! Well it might be immensely effective on stage, it still works reasonably well on the screen too. Post interval the film takes a more intense dramatic turn. And surprisingly the acting is not at all theatrical or dramatic! Subodh Bhave in particular gives a well controlled yet intense performance throughout. The whole of second half works purely on two things first the basic strength of the original story & second of course the performances. But overall the film isn’t error free.

So one of the errors of ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is the fact that the original play was on the lines of ‘absurd theatre’, where what we see is not really ‘reality’. It’s a setup to say certain things. Many of what we see can’t be taken literally. It has a different meaning ‘metaphorically’. But in the first half of ‘Ti Ani Itar’ this metaphoric setting of the play disrupts the cinematic sense of the film. There was definitely a scope to ‘show’ certain things!

Secondly throughout first half as well as second, there’s almost no use of light! The whole film almost works one stock light. The film doesn’t acknowledge the fact that natural light can really be used to bring an important visual dimension to the film.

Overall:

Yes ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is basically a play that doesn’t quite justify it’s ‘film’ adaptation, but its one hell of an impactful experience. Those who like morally confusing ‘food for thought’ ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is definitely a must watch as there isn’t any available medium to watch this story on stage.

Sachin Pilgaonkar has written lyrics for the first time for Govind Nihlani directed “Tee Ani Itar”. After being an actor, director, producer, presenter and music composer, Sachin has donned another cap as a poet. He has taken a pen name “Shafaq” for this new role. The gajhal is in pure Urdu language “Badal Jo Gheer Ke Aye”. The music for this gajhal has been composed by Vashudha Sharma and Aditi Paul has sung this soulful rendition. Sachin has fabulous command over Urud, as we have seen in “Katyar Kakjay Ghusli”

The film also has another song “Atur Mann” written by Mandar Cholkar and sung by Ankita Joshi. The film stars Subodh Bhave and Sonali Kulkarni in the lead roles. Along with these two, the film has talented star cast like Amruta Subhash, Avishkar Darvekar, Bhushan Pradhan, Priya marathe, Suman Patel and Ganesh Yadav. The film is produced by Prakash Tiwari, Puniit Singh, Dayal Nihlani and Dhananjay Singh. The film is based on Manjula Padmanabhan’s English Play “Lights Out”. The story and screenplay has been written by Shanta Gokhale.

The film will be releasing on 21 July all over Maharashtra.
