Hostel Days Marathi Movie Review:

If someone would have asked me which is the safest scenario to set a film in (before watching ‘Hostel Days’) I might have answered ‘a hostel’. But now I definitely won’t. ‘Hostel Days’ is a revelation of sorts in taking this genre, the overall Marathi cinema, & the ‘musical’ genre altogether to a new low! The film is life threateningly 2 & a half hours long! But the main conflict arrives in the last 45 minutes or so. But does it mean at least then the film becomes marginally interesting? No!

Normally when a film has a hostel scenario it’s mostly secondary or a by product of the college scenario. Yes there could be other exceptions too, but then those films justify why the film is only about hostel life! ‘Hostel Days’ tries to figure out the same throughout the film. As said earlier the actual conflict arrives much late but before that the film relies on a cardboard cutout love triangle between Aroh Welankar, Prarthana Behere & a much younger looking Virajas Kulkarni. Then there are also few other characters in which Akshay Tanksale has been given more footage. Tanksale as ‘Buchchan’ plays an Amitabh Bachchan fan for a silly reason revealed later in the film. He is also the narrator of the film, where he speaks too much but actually has very little to say. Sanjay Jadhav as ‘KuKu’ (Kumar Kulkarni) is said to be the rector of the hostel & along with his wife together they both represent the entire teaching or administrating staff of the whole college!

But then the film keeps avoiding the term ‘college’. Instead it constantly tries to convince us that it’s about the ‘hostel’. Not a single character appeals to us. Akshay Tanksale tries too hard with his usual antics but ends up making no sense. Aroh Welankar looks the part of a tough guy, the hostel GS ‘Shiva’, but delivers his dialogue with utter innocence of a studious teenager. Virajas Kulkarni as ‘Jay Dharmadhikari’ a rich spoilt brat is the exact opposite where he forcefully plays a villain while looking like a just passed out 10th grade student. Jay and his gang of friends from Mumbai & other cities who are now in a small village hostel are clearly a version of Shekhar Malhotra and his gang from ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander’!

The film has around 8 songs or so. None of them is memorable. Technically the film isn’t really bad but it’s like a body without a soul. The soul of ‘Hostel Days’ is merely a collection of a few gags, usual college film clichés & a melodrama about the rich vs poor, the corrupt vs the honest, hardworking. ‘Hostel Days’ calls itself a film about hostel life but doesn’t really get what exactly it is. It uses a hostel the way an older film used the slums, where the residents strive to save their homes from the builder mafia!

The only positive is that Sanjay Jadhav comes out as a decent minimalist character actor out of this film. But again it’s also because other actors are either trying too hard or not trying at all in their respective roles. ‘Hostel Days’ biggest issue is it’s length of around 2 & a Half hours. Had that been curbed by around 40-45 minutes this film might have entertained at least some audiences.

Overall:

We definitely deserve a lot better film about hostel life that can make an ex-hostelite nostalgic & others excited about it. ‘Hostel Days’ only manages to be a terribly tasteless clichéd ‘film’ that actually abuses the purity of hostel life. It definitely affected my personal memories of my ‘Hostel Days’, not in a nostalgic way.

Hostel life stays as a special memory for many who have gone through it. And those who couldn’t live in a hostel ever are always fascinated by it. Ajay Naik revealed the poster of the film recently on the occasion of his birth day. The poster too represents the spirit of hostel & college life.

The story of this film is based in the 90s. Hostel life back then was definitely more exciting & different from now, & hence today’s audiences will be reminded of those simpler times. And for those who lived in hostels in the 90s this film would bring back many of their memories & make them nostalgic.

The cast of ‘Hostel Days’ has been kept under wraps as of now.Hostel Days Marathi movie First Look Postyer

Love stories are an eternal subject that challenge film makers. Love and its many facets have been interpreted and presented in many different ways over a number of years. But love still remains unconquered and the subject continues to tempt film makers to further explore its depths. And that is why after his directorial debut with Lagna Pahave Karun Director Ajay Naik is yet again set to bring to the audience his second feature film a romantic musical – Baawre Prem He.

This is a story of Ananya Shirodkar (Urmila Kanetkar -Kothare) and Neel Rajyadhyaksh (Siddharth Chandekar) and their love that blossoms in the beautiful and scenic Goa. Their love meets unexpected twists and takes unanticipated turns but will they live happily ever after?

Ajay Naik has written the story himself while screenplay and dialogues have been written by ChinmayKelkar along with Ajay Naik. The natural beauty of Goa has been captured by cinematographer SalilSahastrabuddhe. Ajay Naik’s lyrics have been beautifully rendered by Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, BelaShende, HrishikeshRanade and ApekshaDandekar. Spruha Joshi debuts as a lyricist with one song in the film. The soundtrack also has an instrumental piece titled ‘Margaret’s Theme’ and has the mouth organ, accordion and violin playing in it. 72 year old KishorNaik has played the mouth organ for this instrumental track.

A love story that has a soulful soundtrack pulls at your heart in different ways. The director Ajay Naik has himself composed all songs of the film. This is his third film after Satrangi Re and Lagn Pahave Karun. The music of the film was launched in a grand affair held in Mumbai in the presence of the cast, singers and musicians on Monday evening.
Presented by Trio Entertainments and produced under the banners of Maitri Productions and Shivtara Entertainment Production; Nilesh Singh, Nimesh Ramesh Desai, VirendraNarhariChavan, Kishore Naik and Jaideep Yole are the producers of BawrePrem He, which is set to release all over Maharashtra on September 26th.

    Story Outline :

Nishant Barve (Umesh Kamat), who works in the U.S, returns home in Pune on a short break to marry a girl chosen by his mother through a marriage bureau headed by a lady (Swati Chitnis) strictly believing in horoscopes. While on leave, Nishant loses his job in

the US. The news exposes the true face of his to-be wife and he breaks up with her. Nishant, who always was a disbeliever in horoscopes and other such things, insults the head of marriage bureau and rubbishes off her profession.

He comes across a stranger Aditi (Mukta Barve) who slowly becomes a friend. Aditi is eager to start a unique marriage bureau. Impressed by Aditi’s determination, Nishant agrees to be her partner in the venture. Everything goes smooth for Aditi and Nishant, who also start developing feelings for each other. Their bureau also tastes its first success through the marriage of Rahul (Siddharth Chandekar) and Anandi (Tejashree Pradhan). But the business partners face a big hurdle in the form of the head of the rival marriage bureau, whom Nishant had insulted.

    Review :

Most of the modern day Hindi film love stories cannot be enjoyed by the entire family due to various obvious reasons. But that is not the case with Marathi cinema these days. No doubt, films like Shree Partner, Premachi Goshta and Time Please were new age romantic films but they also maintained a fine balance between modernism and traditions. This legacy of appealing, modern yet clean love stories is continued with debutant Ajay Naik’s Lagna Pahave Karun.

The film surely has the boy-meets-girl saga but like all intelligent love stories, it doesn’t appear filmy and has a good flow and realistic touch to it. A mixture of wit and emotions in the dialogues keep you engrossed throughout.

Umesh Kamat & Mukta Barve – Lagna Pahave karun

But what truly sets this love story aside is the background of marriage bureau and the rivalry born out of it. This topic is hardly explored before. On a personal note, my hatred towards marriage bureaus has diminished after witnessing the working of the one explored here.

The closing moments, however, stop the film from being truly exceptional. Although the climax is heartwarming, it could have been presented in a better way. But what is more questionable is not including a triumphant scene between Nishant and the owner of rival bureau, for which there was every scope. This would have surely generated applause. Nevertheless, these points don’t reduce your overall satisfaction much.

Naik’s soulful compositions are placed well and suit the need of the film. The camerawork is impressive and so is the background score. The editing should also be lauded for keeping the length of the film inside two hours.

Like every love story, performances play a key role here too. Umesh Kamat once again gets every emotion right and provides a lovable act. Mukta Barve too deserves similar praise for her impressive performance. Siddharth Chandekar and Tejashree Pradhan play a troubled couple aptly. Swati Chitnis succeeds in providing the antagonistic effect very well. The rest of the supporting cast fits the bill.

    Overall :

Lagna Pahave Karun is yet another mature love story of the year.
