Marathi cinema had two Major comic icons in the post ‘Dada Kondake’ era, they were Ashok Saraf & Laxmikant Berde. Along with another comic star emerged & became an equally iconic Marathi actor & a household name in Marathi houses. Vijay Chavan entertained the audiences through more than 350 movies & many plays too!

His iconic characters include the title role in superhit play ‘Moruchi Mavshi’. A play that was remade into a Hindi film ‘Aunty No. 1’ starring Govinda. In the earlier part of his career he collaborated with Laxmikant Berde & director Purushottam Berde, Mahesh Kothare countless times.

In his second inning his collaboration with director Kedar Shinde & actor Bharat Jadhav entertained the audiences through plays like ‘Shrimant Damodar Pant’ & films like ‘Jatra’ & ‘Kho Kho’. His role of ‘Kanhole’ in ‘Jatra’ has become one of the most loved characters of Marathi cinema. From Dada Kondke to Siddharth Jadhav Vijay Chavan has worked in the industry with generations of artists!

He was suffering from a prolonged lung disease. Battling with the disease the actor passed away this morning at Fortis Hospital in Mulund, Mumbai. Recently Vijay Chavan was honored with the prestigious V. Shantaram Award at Maharashtra State Marathi Film Awards. He was obliged & very happy to be honored with this award.

Vijay Chavan’s contribution to Marathi cinema & theater will always keep him in the memories of the audiences forever.

Braveheart Marathi Movie Review :

Braveheart is a film that’s not technically or logically flawless, but manages to strike the most essential chord, the ‘emotional’ one. 2017 hasn’t been a great year for Marathi cinema so far & Braveheart is one of those few films that the audiences should definitely give a try.

The film is based on a true story. A young man named Nikhil Karkhanis (Sangram Samel) suffers from a deadly disease of the spinal cord, with no possibilities of surviving. The scene in which the doctor reveals this sad truth to him & in his father Sacchidanand Karkhanis (Arun Nalawade) is where the film starts rising above average. Nikhil’s first reaction to this is not just shocking but extremely uplifting. He asks the doctor how many months, years he has with him. Nikhil is passionate about many little things in life from trekking, traveling to food & he wishes to complete as many dreams as he can in whatever time he has left.

However the narrative of the film reflects more on his struggle with the deadly disease that works like slow poison, affecting his legs first making them useless & slowly the entire body. Throughout this struggle there are two faithful helping hands to Nikhil, one being the company he works for ‘Tech Mahindra’ & the other & the most important his father Mr. Sacchidanand Karkhanis. Nikhil grew up under the love of his father & grandmother (Sulabha Deshpande) as his mother too died from a disease when he was 12-13 years old.     

Apart from this really inspiring real struggle of Nikhil, the strongest points of this film include the performances by the two lead actors Sangram Samel & Arun Nalawade. Sangram, the debutant has truly poured his heart into the performance. Both physically & emotionally he lives Nikhil’s character. Arun Nalawade is an actor who has a tendency to go over the top, but when he doesn’t he has a great gift to make his characters human! And he did make Mr. Sacchidanand Karkhanis very much human.

Talking about flaws, ‘Braveheart’ could have avoided a clichéd approach to the character of Nikhil’s love interest played by Dhanashri Kadgaonkar. A girl who is madly in love with Nikhil & wishes to marry him disregarding his disease. But after the marriage, she changes drastically without any solid reason. She was married to Nikhil for almost four years, if they wanted the character to change so drastically they could’ve shown the transition slowly & without directly making her a vamp.

‘Tech Mahindra’ as I said earlier is an important helping hand to Nikhil, but unfortunately we never really witness Nikhil’s office routine or the reason why he is so important to the company. Another major flaw is the ever-present narrator (Atul Parchure) who contributes nothing substantial to the narrative.

Many a times some important incidents in Nikhil’s journey are simply narrated by the narrator, which should’ve been shown to the audience. Obviously there are financial constraints that could’ve made the director take these decisions.

This film is written by the ‘Ek Hazarachi Note’ fame writer ‘Shrikant Bojewar’ & his dialogues are very much important for making the emotional connect. Another refreshing aspect is the background score given by Amar Mohile. Yes it’s melodramatic but still displays a lot of craftsmanship & an intent to contribute to the film’s emotional context.

This film being produced by the actual Mr. Sachhidanand Karkhanis (real Nikhil’s father) avoids any unnecessary “commercial”, “masala” sorts of additions. Directed by a non-Marathi director Dasbabu, ‘Braveheart’ is a film that could’ve been even better if it had a bigger budget & more work on the screenplay, but nevertheless this story of a real life ‘Braveheart’ & his equally brave father manages to inspire us positively & value our lives more.   

Overall:

If you love inspiring real life stories, ‘Braveheart’ is a must watch, for others too ‘Braveheart’ can surprise you emotionally!

We get to see the true story of the relationship between father and son in the forthcoming Marathi Movie ‘Braveheart Jidd Jagnyachi’. Under the banner of Nikhil films, producers Sachidanand Gopinath Karkhanis and Santosh Yashwant Mokashi, have produced this film and veteran Bengali director Dasbabu has directed this movie. ‘Braveheart Jidd Jagnyachi’ comes to the theatres on the 7th of April.

The movie has won commendations and laurels in many film festivals. In the recently concluded 15th Third Eye Asian film festival, critics and the general audience appreciated the movie. The story of the tenacity of the father-son duo, their struggles, their effort to lead a meaningful life and their fighting spirit, is what we are going to see in the movie ‘Braveheart’. The movie’s director, Dasbabu, has nearly 20 years of experience working in the Marathi entertainment industry.

Kaul Manacha Marathi Movie Review :

Many a times we have a tendency of typecasting films. Very few times we watch a film with a complete clean slate. And we recommend that watching Kaul Manacha with a complete clean slate can be an enjoyable experience. A month back came another film based in a boarding school & revolving around adolescent kids. It was pointless, silly & a technical disaster unlike this one. Yes even technically Kaul Manacha is acceptable!

The story belongs to Raj (AshutoshGaikwad) who is an out & out Bollywood addict. Just like Om PrakashMakhija from ‘Om Shanti Om’ but Raj is still in his earlier years. He is studying in a boarding school. His father passed on this ‘filmy’ legacy to him. So Raj is now all set to live his romantic dream. The first woman that blew his mind is not surprisingly his teacher Miss Hema (AmrutaPatki). Just like a true blue filmy maniac he imagines her in chiffon sarees& lip syncs to a truly beautiful romantic number (‘SundariTu’ is truly beautiful & you’ll keep humming it for a day or so after coming out!) And then with his contemporary Ritika (GirijaPrabhu)! A new admission in the school!

Ok we admit the plot is predictable & has been repeated many times in recent past but yet Kaul Manacha has a novelty factor. The film is genuinely funny in some parts & well even unintentionally funny at others. But we are bought into it, we are engaged, we are bothered about the three kids (Raj, Ritika & Prathamesh) who ran away from the boarding to get their questions answered! (the ‘Kaul’ part).

In the first half Raj is excitingly a bit of an Anti-Hero, but the point the makers wish to make is quite opposite of it. The reason we are giving thumbs up to this slightly immature treatment is the fact that throughout the second half Kaul Manacha keeps making essential points. They don’t become preachy as well! They have used the available plotline itself. The second half is quite wholesome were nothing is hurried to throw the message on our face. The lead kids Ashutosh & Girija have performed really well with interesting contributions from Rajesh Shringarpure & Kamlesh Sawant.

Yes there are quite a few emotionally melodramatic moments which could have been avoided, but still Kaul Manacha manages to strike a chord! The writers Bheemrao Mude (also the director) & Shweta Pendse (who has also acted in the film, a familiar face on TV) deserve credit for being pretty sure about exactly what they want to say & managing to keep the process engaging.

However we wish one day we will be ready to accept a complex anti-hero without any justification by the end of the film. We are not asking for glorifying such characters but a sensibility to accept them the way they are without thinking even once about the negative impact it might make on the younger audience because it doesn’t!

The length of the film is nearly two hours & still we felt it could have been a bit longer provided they had a bigger outdoor budget.The dialogues could have been simplistic as at times they really get on your nerves. Two out of three songs are enjoyable & well essential to the film. Better direction could have made Kaul Manacha the surprise good film of the year, but still we aren’t complaining!

Overall:

Don’t go on the publicity stills or other promotional content & activities coming at your way about this film, Kaul Manacha will surprise you!
