Zindagi Virat Marathi Movie Review :

Many Marathi films have been made in recent times where the overall life of the plot is very little but the treatment has some novelty to it. Films like ‘Ranga Patanga’ for example. But there aren’t many films which actually succeed in employing a treatment that justifies the specific scope of the plot. And ‘Zindagi Virat’ is no exception here. The film starts off on a good note promising some kind of a black comedy. But that never happens.

The one liner for this film is actually the whole plot of the film. A young man in his early 20s (Om Bhutkar) has lost his father (Kishore Kadam) & he is supposed to fulfill his father’s last wish (of sort) of celebrating his birthday. But for that the son needs his father’s birth date. So the whole 2 hrs or so are spent in searching for that exact official birth date! The first half isn’t great but it isn’t unbearable in every way. At few of the instances the humor in it actually works. It could be credited for the chemistry shared between the hero & his best friend (Sumit Sanghamitra; who is also the director of this film).

But soon in the second half that chemistry too becomes tasteless & the whole exercise of finding the date becomes pointless & unbearable (on our part). Kishore Kadam keeps making entries in different fantasy sequences & flashbacks. This certainly isn’t one of his performances where he could hold the audiences by simply being in the film (which he has managed a few times before). Even Usha Naik’s fun interpretation of the historical (in Marathi cinema) ‘Kannada’ accent couldn’t save the second half.

‘Zindagi Virat’ doesn’t even have a social message of sort that could be hammered on us in the end. The film is literally out of thoughts. It appears as if the writer was so much fascinated by the basic one line itself that no efforts were taken to develop the entire story for this film. There are two songs that are completely irrelevant to the plot of the film. One being a ‘Sairat’ inspired romantic number & the other a Bhau Kadam starrer party song! Bhau Kadam exists in this film because, well he is Bhau Kadam! Isn’t he? In fact the Tele-vision promos of this film feature only those two scenes which have Bhau in it. Yes Bhau exists in merely two scenes & the party song!

Om Bhutkar though has done his part with sincerity & the director himself (Sumit Sanghamitra) too is a talented actor, but definitely not a talented director! I genuinely feel that editors of Marathi films should be given utmost authority even more than the directors! Maybe then just maybe we would have films that could be bad but short & hence bearable.

Marathi cinema has been regularly manufacturing rural comedies but in so many years very few of them have become memorable! This year started with another rural comedy ‘Zhalla Bobhata’ which at least had a message & some hilarious moments. Yet the film wasn’t well received by the audiences. Why don’t our filmmakers get it? There isn’t much audience to these films, especially when they don’t have enough content & considerably decent treatment.

Overall:

‘Zindagi Virat’ is a film that doesn’t even know why & how it was titled ‘Zindagi Virat’! What it knows doesn’t matter much. Yet if you’ve really liked the trailer, promos or the songs of this film you might even enjoy the films to some extent, provided you skip the entire second half! So the choice is yours!

Story Outline :

Last week in the 10.30 pm slot of Zee Marathi a new serial ‘Jago Mohan Pyare’ started its telecast. This new serial starring Atul Parchure, Supriya Pathare & Shruti Marathe replaced the hugely popular ‘Dil Dosti Dobara’ in that time slot. But ‘Jago Mohan Pyare’ too has grabbed the attention of our audiences with its unique blend of reality, humour & fantasy.

The story of a frustrated common man who lives in chawl with his dominating wife & the entry of a fairy like women who changes his life! The humour in these first few episodes of ‘Jago Mohan Pyare’ reminded us of the humour of Maharashtra’s favourite writer & performer Pu La Deshpande.

Moreover Shruti Marathe’s character brings in a unique twist of fantasy in this serial. This whole mixture together is definitely refreshing & once again Zee Marathi has succeeded in giving fresh new content to the audiences. Watch ‘Jage Mohan Pyare’ every Monday to Saturday at 10.30 pm on Zee Marathi.

During the promotions of Vishal Furia directed ‘Lapachhapi’ popular singer Vaishali Samant described a song which she sang for the film as the only breather in this horror film. The song was nothing but ‘Dil Khulas’ & it has been out on social media for some time now. As Vaishali Samant said this song truly is a source of positivity & will give the audience a breather in an otherwise intense horror film.

Pooja Sawant & Vikram Gaikwad are seen in a different happy mood in this song awaiting the birth of their child. They don’t seem to have a hint of what ‘horror’ lies in their path ahead, but we do!

The lyrics of this song are written by Prashant Ingole. It is composed by Shreyas Puranik & is sung by one of Marathi’s prominent singer Vaishali Samant. Lapachhapi releases all over Maharashtra on 14th July, don’t miss it.

Lapachapi Marathi Movie Review :

First & foremost ‘Horror’ is a genre that has been ignored in Marathi cinema since ages, especially in the recent years when the basic technical skills have improved of our films. Surprisingly our community of Marathi people have always been attracted towards horror through our folk tales & literature. There’s a decent following of writers who have been writing in this genre. So, director Vishal Furia deserves credit for attempting a Marathi horror film & getting many things right!

The story begins when a young couple Tushar & Neha (Pooja Sawant & Vikram Gaikwad) decide to take shelter at their driver’s village. Tushar had been beaten up & he wishes to protect his pregnant wife from any undesirable incident. The film doesn’t feel the need to establish or explain the ‘danger’ other than through dialogues. So, then Tushar & Neha start living in a mysterious old house for a few days surrounded by nothing but sugarcane fields!

The driver’s wife played by senior actress Usha Naik takes care of their basic needs. Then the story slowly introduces the ‘horror’ parts with irregular impact. The second half is more regular & scarier. Though the twists & turns are pretty obvious they still engross you. The film unnecessarily mixes up two conflicts, rather two issues! One that makes sense but the other loses on logic feels forcefully imbibed into the scheme of things.

This film falls in the category of “could have been much better, but still not bad!”. The most important error is a confusing plot. The film has a convenient ‘compact’ feel in terms of budget & locations but plot wise it becomes a little too ambitious. The confusion isn’t deliberate it exists because the film tries to justify everything & fails to back it up with logic. Certain films especially in horror or mystery genre deliberately flaunt a confusing plot & keep it ambiguous, but then they focus on other aspects of presenting a specific philosophy or simply mocking the existence of a well rounded plot. Lapachhapi had no such intentions in any possible way.

Then it is Pooja Sawant’s performance, there is a sense of repetition in the way she expresses or maybe it’s her limitations. She definitely tried to be better, but this role needed a more matured actress. Usha Naik’s character could have been the twist in the plot & could’ve added to the suspense of the film. Instead it becomes obvious. There are other characters which bring in more impact to the film but discussing them would be a spoiler.

The strongest aspect of ‘Lapachhapi’ is certainly its background score & sound design. This film could have lost most of what it achieves if it had a ‘scary for scary’s sake’ background. However the background can’t be called realistic. As many a times, the visuals fail to justify certain sounds & we accept that as a liberty taken on the director’s part. The most important reason why we’ve given this film ‘3 stars’ is because it achieves a mystic nature in an important sequence in the second half. The illusions are masterfully crafted & Pooja seems above average at least in them. If this film had more such sequences the result would have been different. Nevertheless this is Vishal Furia’s debut film & in the future we can expect him to improve his craft as a storyteller.

Overall:

Lapachhapi definitely deserves a watch from audiences who cherish ‘horror’ genre. But we would also advice to not carry tonnes of expectations. This is without a doubt the most decent attempt at ‘horror’ in Marathi cinema’s recent history. Actually we can’t even remember a single decent Marathi ‘horror’ film made before.

Ever since the trailer of ‘Lapachhapi’ has been posted on social media, it has gone viral. And the thrill of horror film has grasped one & all. This film was shot in a thrilling manner too. In a sugarcane field, away from livelihood this film’s team shot the film & had to face many obstacles.

The old house used in the film has been there for years & without humans living in it. And since the sugarcane field was far from the village, the villagers used to throw away snakes which were caught in the village. And these snakes caused lot of problems while the shooting of the film. Many a times, actress Pooja Sawant had to give her scene with a fear of snakes in her mind, even she hurt herself while shooting but kept going on.

Moreover Pooja who never sleeps alone, she is always accompanied by her mother purposefully stayed alone in that house to get into the character. Her character is of a pregnant woman & who has to stay alone in that house facing many obstacles. Lapachhapi directed by Vishal Furia is set to release on 14th July & is set to create a new milestone in ‘horror’ genre of Marathi cinema.

Horror film is a genre that we don’t see often in Indian films let alone Marathi films. Though we’ve a huge group of passionate audiences who actually like to be scared. Those audiences have to look for Hollywood or other International horror films.

But now we have our very own international horror film in Marathi ‘Lapachhapi‘. Yes the film has been internationally acclaimed too. It has won over 15 awards in film festivals around the world. The trailer of this film is thrillingly scary. The whole backdrop of an old house in the middle of nowhere in a village. The glimpses of performances by Pooja Sawant, senior actress Usha Naik & the terrific looking child artists too are promising.

The audience would readily welcome such a fine looking horror film. Technically the trailer looks superb too & the sound design & background score adds to the overall ‘horror’ factor of the film. This film will hopefully set a benchmark for future horror movies that would be made in Marathi or even elsewhere in Indian Cinema.
