Synopsis : This is a Marathi feature film titled ‘Barayan’. 

As the title suggests it is a story or rather ‘Ramayan’ that revolves around the year Baravi (12th Standard).

Most of us in our school life are threatened by this number i.e. 12th standard board examination. The social surrounding of our society these days has given lot of importance to the board examination thereby resulting in unnecessary burden on the student and putting performance pressure on him/her. Parent’s knowingly or unknowingly go with the flow and expect the same from their children putting unrealistic burden on the student. The overall education scenario has become very commercial. If the student does not perform in his 12th than he cannot do anything good with his/her life is a general perception of parents in particular and the society in general. 12th has become a turning point year. If one does not perform in this year than that’s the end of his/her career. Traditional mindset of the society is that Medical or Engineering are the only two major options. The film has subtly but in an ‘entertaining manner’ tried to highlight this aspect of our educational system and how we are becoming part of this. 

The story of the film revolves around incidents based on this one year in the life of our protagonist and his journey to engineering college after that. A story that unfolds various experiences of our protagonist, his learning during the process of him seeking education and identifying his ultimate interest. How his social surrounding is enabling him to grow as a person. The protagonist of the film represents today’s student and the challenges faced by him to understand his passion. 

The story of the film is set in a serene and calm town of Konkan, surrounded by mesmerizing seashore and beautiful fort. It is purely a family drama.

Lot of Marathi films have been made in recent times involving a teenager as the main protagonist. But most of the times these films have been love stories. Other films which do involve the scenario of exam pressure where not dealing with this subject with a serious perspective. But ‘Barayan’ looks distinct from all those films. The trailer itself projects the serious perspective towards 12^th Board exams & the confusion towards choosing a stream after the exams.

But the serious subject seems to be given a perfectly relatable treatment by the makers. The film seems like a complete entertainer. ‘Barayan’ stars many seasoned actors like Sanjay Mone, Nandu Madhav, Pratiksha Lonkar, Om Bhutkar, Vandana Gupte & in the lead a familiar child artist Anurag Worlikar.

Vitthala Shappath Marathi Movie Review :

Vitthala Shappath is a film that fails on so many levels that it is impossible to remember all of them. To start with the most basic flaw is the hero itself. It seems like Marathi audiences should now develop the habit of accepting incompetent actors as their heroes & heroines. However if you still have an appetite for watching good acting you could be rewarded by one or two known seasoned actors in the supporting cast.

In case of Vitthala Shappath Mangesh Desai is that reward. No matter how unapologetically pointless the plot of the film is Mangesh Desai manages to be in the skin of his character throughout. I was reminded of veteran actor-singer Vasantrao Deshpande’s little part in the cult classic Ashtavinayak. Mangesh Desai portrays a gold hearted father to our incompetent hero, though Desai’s purpose in the conflict is equally pointless as the film.  

The most unbearable parts in the film represent a very strong south Indian influence. No not just the songs, & our incompetent hero’s antics, but also the backdrop of land mafia & the political connections. In one of the songs at the background we can notice the poster of Ankush Chaudhari starrer Guru. Guru was unfortunately among the first Marathi films in the mainstream that started employing the south formula in our films. However the audiences have never shown any adulation towards the formula in Marathi especially because our audiences are already consuming the same through different multimedia mediums. Even Hindi cinema learned its lesson & put a halt on manufacturing south formula films at an alarming pace (yes they were at one point). 

Vitthala Shappath’s another primary failure is that it doesn’t try one bit to get anywhere near the real devotion of Vitthal devotees. A Vitthal devotee has enough Vitthal in himself, that he would never be in a state to fight a war just for building a Vitthal temple. Even if we forgive this error, this whole phenomenon isn’t even strong enough on an emotional level. Yes even Mangesh Desai’s honest performance isn’t good enough to establish the emotional connect. Maybe (just maybe) if this film was riding completely on Desai’s shoulders it had a better chance to make that connect.

Another good actor has been wasted in ‘Vitthala Shappath’. Sanjay Khapre as a good hearted drunk lawyer. Honestly I could see a lot of scope for Khapre’s character to be the driving force in the second half. His character of the lawyer who is supposed to save our (incompetent) hero gets a decent amount of screen time to be established. But the shocking part is that we never see how he actually saves the hero. Yes the film skips the whole court battle part, with ubrittled confidence.

The music & background of this film matches the chaotic atmosphere of the film with utter dedication. This film has been credited with a number of writers but for many montage sequences it avoids using dialogues suggesting us as if they didn’t really exist in the first place & hence the montage were improvised instead. 

The film ends on a laughable sad end that again is a poor attempt to reinforce the conflict of the film. I couldn’t really figure out why did the film hints the climax in the opening scene of the film. Not that we care, but let’s assume if an audience is really bothered about the hero & heroine’s future, they must have already predicted it, while making the exercise of going through the runtime pointless. 

Overall:

You have to be a die-hard fan of Mangesh Desai to sit through ‘Vitthala Shappath’ & be mildly satisfied by it.

Aditya  Paithankar  starred Gopya’s music launch was done recently in Mumbai. “Ganesh Film & Entertainment” Presentation “Gopya” is a predominantly musical film and it is slated for release all over Maharashtra on April 21. The film is directed by Raj Paithankar.

On the occasion, present were the singers, music director and the director of the film. Kiran-Raj has composed the songs and lyrics are by Raj Paithankar. Kiran has sung “Taana Na Taana Na…” and “Tu Tujhya Jeevanacha Shilpakar…” while Neha Rajpal has sung “Kaay Asa Kela Mee Gunaha…” Master Rohit Wagh has crooned the number “Aapli Khod Kuni Kaadaichi Nahi…”

Besides Aditya  Paithankar who has played  the title role, the film also stars Madhavi  Juvekar, Kamlesh Sawant, Manisha Paithankar, Uday Sabnis, Jaywant Wadkar, Ajay Jadhav, Sameer Vijayan, Rajesh Bhosle, Prakash Dhotre, Amir Tadwalkar, Manasi Murudkar and Ajit Jadhav.

The film is produced by Amol Bhalerao, Nitin Pagare and Raj Paithankar and co-produced by Sarjerao Mote, Atulraje Gayali and Dhanaji Gaikwad and Subhash Jagadhne.  

Raj Paithankar who has dabbled in direction as well as lyrics has also written the subject. Yogesh Sabnis has written the screenplay and the dialogues.  Cinematography is by Aniket K while Art Direction is by Devdatt Raut and Nandu Moharkar. Atul Salve is the production executive while Chinni Chetan is the choreographer. Sonu Paitankar has designed the sound for the film while Vishal Kotkar has edited the film.
