Makrand Anaspure starrer Ranga Patanga has been getting good reviews and awards at various national and international film festivals. The film will be screened at River to River Indian Film Festival in Italy. This will be only Marathi film to be screened in this festival. The film is directed by Prasad Namjoshi.

The festival has been organized at Florence from 3 to 8 December. Earlier, the festival has screened Marathi films like Dombivali Fast, Matimai, and Fandry. Ranga Patanga is a story of a farmer and his hardships. The film stars Makrand Anaspure, Nandita Dhuri, Sandeep Pathak, Gauri Konge, Bharat Ganeshpure, Umesh Jagtap Tejpal Wagh et al.

The film was released theatrically in April and audience have liked it immensely. The critically acclaimed film also received Sant Tukaram Award and best director award. The film also received state awards for best rural film, Best Singer (Adarsh Shinde), best supporting actor (Sandeep Pathak). Chinmay Patankar also received award in Sahyadri Cine Awards for best story.

Ganvesh Marathi Movie Review:

Kishore Kadam and Smita Tambe are fast becoming the go to actors when it comes to playing a couple from the villages. Partu showed that the two actors share a chemistry that will light up any filmmaker’s eyes. No wonder they have been cast again, here in Ganvesh, as a blue collared couple from the villages who are struggling to make ends meet. And their performances again, much like it was in Partu, is the best part about the film.

It is a pleasure to watch how both of them, especially Smita Tambe, slip deep into their roles, and perfect not only the mannerisms but also the manual labour that their character has to go through. It speaks a lot about their commitment and gives the film a much needed authenticity. Their effortless performance leaves us glued to the screens. The two hardworking couple, Suresh and his wife, have a kid who has been selected to give a speech to a visiting Minister on the eve of Independence Day. But only those kids who will wear a new uniform will be given the opportunity before the minister. We then see Samar and his wife face one hurdle after another to get that uniform for their beloved child who has pinned all his hopes on giving the speech.

The premise is a little unbelievable, but the film is comprised of a few well written scenes, mostly involving Kishore Kadam, that makes the proceedings watchable. However, things drag a little too much and that becomes the film’s major undoing. For example, the scene at the tailor where Suresh is nervously egging on the tailor to sew his son’s uniform as time is running out, but the tailor keeps delaying citing one reason or the other. It is a well done scene, but could have been so much better if it was shorter than what it is.  We can totally relate to Suresh’s anxiety in getting the uniform home, but the scene overstays its welcome and we disconnect with the film. This is true of the film as a whole as well.

There are two other tracks in the film one involving police inspector Meera and the turmoil in her mind of how in modern India the respect the uniform of the police once had, is fast dwindling. Another one involves the Minister and a handspun cotton ‘uniform’ that he is attached to.  The minister track is about the irony in the Minister being Gandhian in his ideology and hence being a clean person with no material cravings, but still being attached to his uniform which indirectly makes life difficult for Suresh.

The screenplay by Tejash Ghadage sure is ambitious, and he has also managed to weave all the three together satisfactorily, buy you can’t help feel that the film has a little too much on its plate.The tracks involving Meera and the Minister don’t hold your attention and also the film falls into the trap of emotional melodrama towards the end.

Overall:

Despite strong performances, few well written scenes, a good background score and decent camerawork, Ganvesh turns out to be a lot less impressive than what it could have been had it have a little less on its plate.

Mukta Barve has been known for doing inspired characters for her roles. In Atul Jagdale’s “Ganvesh” Mukta will be seen as a dashing Police Inspector Meera Patil.

As Mukta was essaying role of a police officer for the first time, she worked really hard for this. She stayed with a lady PSI officer and understood her body language and style of working. Mukta also paid special attention to her physical training as she has to look fit on the screen.

The film is releasing on 24 June. The film also stars Kishor Kadam, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Smita Tambe, Suhas Palshikar, Nagesh Bhosale, Ganesh Yadav, Sharad Ponkshe, Guru Thakur and child artiste Tanmay Mande.

This is the first film by Atul Jagdale as a director who has earlier worked as a director of photography for many Marathi films. The story-screenplay and dialogues are written by Tejas Ghatge. Guru Thakur has penned the lyrics and Nihar Shembekar has composed the music. The songs have been sung by Urmila Dhangar and Nandesh Umap. Background music has been scored by Mangesh Dhakade. Art direction is by Dnyanadev Indulkar. The editing is done by Rajesh Rao. Makeup is by Lalit Kulkarni and costumes are designed by Smita Koli. Action scenes are done by Harpal Singh and Ravi Kumar and Kartik Paul has done the choreography.

The film is expected to release very soon in the theatres.

Ganvesh means uniform in marathi. And in the beginning of the trailer itself we come to know why the title. A minister is going to visit the school in a village of Maharashtra, so the teacher of the boy in our film tells him to wear a new uniform and only then will he be allowed to address the school in the presence of the minister.

This seems like another addition in the long list of marathi films in the recent past that want to tell their story through a child. Mukta Barve who is shown playing a police officer quips a little thoughtlessly that ‘is buying a uniform, like buying a bungalow?’. The boy belongs to an economicallyunderprivileged family and it indeed is a big task for them to get their darling boy a new uniform.Kishore Kadam is in his usual touch and impresses you in every frame he is part of. He seems to have got under the skin of the character of the impoverished father who tries his level best to get his boy the uniform. He is shown getting a little desperate to please his son.

Veteran actor Dilip Prabhavalkar is playing the role of the politician who visits the school. Mukta and him have a very touching conversation regarding whether we should celebrate our independence if we are not able to provide even basic amenities to the poor.

Ganvesh otherwise also seems like a moving drama that tries to throw some light on how wide the economic inequality in our country is. One can only hope that it doesn’t fall into the trap of becoming mawkish.

Reti Marathi Movie Review:

Reti has a rather interesting subject- Sand Mafia. A hitherto unexplored world in cinema, sand mafia are rampant in Maharashtra and other coastal regions of the country. With the construction boom in the urban areas the demand for sand also rose and that gave a push to the flourishing trade of the sand mafia. The film attempts to gives us a peek into this world most urban dwellers are unaware of, despite the urban real estate boom itself being one of the major reasons for the trade.

The film has three main characters Gajanan Mhatre (Shashank Shende), Kisan (Kishore Kadam) and Shankrya (Chinmay Mandlekar). Gajanan Mhatre is the king pin who has controlled the sand mafia for many years. Kisan, his associate, holds the ambition to take over the business from him. Shankyra is ready to help Kisan in his endeavor and they plot a vicious plan to snatch the business from Mhatre. The film then goes on to show how this sinister plan is executed.

The film tries to throw light on the nitty-gritties of the illegal business; victimised villagers, environmentalists, builders, politicians etc. all are dealt with. Now, such complex films that explore a crime syndicate have become popular in the recent past with Syriana and Traffic in the West and Gangs of Wasseypur closer home. However, Reti doesn’t seem to care too much about these widely acclaimed films as the story is given a very typical treatment and ends up being a typical filmy Indian film.

One wonders the need to add romantic songs in a film like Reti. You have a fairly interesting and fresh subjects in your hands, why break the tension with songs. It gives you the feeling that the makers have either succumbed to market pressures or don’t have enough faith in the subject matter.The dialogues are usually filmy and the action sequences typical. Despite having very capable actors, none of the actors in the film make any impact.

Overall:

An unexplored subject is given a run-of-the-mill treatment. A rather novel and relevant subject is wasted.
