Sonalee Kulkarni is one of the rare examples of beauty with brains. She has transformed herself from one of the pretty actresses to one of the most reliable performers on Marathi big screen. In her upcoming film ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ she is paired opposite the acting powerhouse Subodh Bhave. The film releases all over Maharashtra on 8th September. We chated with Sonalee on this occasion.

Tula Kalnar Nahi seems to be a hardcore emotional drama based on relationships. What made you say yes to the film?

I had done ‘Mitwa’ before with Swapna Tai (director of Tula Kalnar Nahi). And I was waiting to do something nice again with her. Then we found this script! In fact there isn’t much melodrama in this film. It is very light-hearted fun film. It can be easily relatable to the audiences. This story is about Rahul & Anjali & what happens between them after marriage. Their relationship goes through many obstacles throughout the journey. We had seen Shahrukh-Kajol as Rahul-Anjali. But their love story was up to their marriage, & this love story takes it from there & tells us what happens to Rahul-Anjali after marriage. They are on a journey of different places in Maharashtra throughout the film.

Tell us about your experience of working with director Swapna Waghmare-Joshi for the second time now. And what do you think are her positives as a director?

She is very emotional & sensitive. And I think she succeeds in transporting that in her films, that too in a subtle way. Even ‘Mitwa’ was an emotional film about relationships. Swapna Tai’s strongest point is the way she deals with relationships in her films. Moreover in her films there are strong female characters. My role of Nandini in ‘Mitwa’ was very complicated yet it was loved by the audiences. Here too my character ‘Anjali’ is very strong. She is today’s woman & is ambitious yet loving. She has her own perspective of looking at relations. She is also willing to change for her husband. In personal life too I have a great tuning with Swapna Tai. She knows me in & out. She knows my strong points as well as weak points & she also knows how to project them on the screen.

Sonalee Kulkarni & Subodh Bhave - Tula Kalnar Nahi Still PhotosThis is your first film with Subodh Bhave. How did the chemistry between you & him developed on & off screen?

It was a fun experience working with him. We weren’t friends before because we hadn’t worked together. But we knew each other & whenever we met talked about each other works. Subodh has guided me throughout. He is like a mentor to me. After watching my every film, he calls me & tells me what he liked & what he didn’t. He recommends me which films to watch, which books to read. In fact all that I have read in Marathi literature, it’s all recommended by him. So I was sure that I would get to learn a lot while working with him. We became good friends while working together in this film. There were many scenes where we had to quarrel like husband & wife. These quarrels needed to be very spontaneous. So we didn’t rehearse any scenes in this film. This film is actually only about Rahul & Anjali, hence it is necessary that a chemistry is developed between us so that the audiences connects with our journey.

One thing is common in almost all your films. That is good music! What do you think is the secret behind it?

I think music is a part of Indian cinema. Even in Marathi films music is very much essential. It also takes the story of our films forward. As a society we are all music lovers. We listen to different genres of music. I have been lucky too, that people have loved the music & songs of my films. In Tula Kalnar Nahi there are three songs. All these songs are in the background and they take the story forward. ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ is the title song of the film that is been used in the film at many occasions in different ways. The interesting fact about this song is that, the title of the film was not decided in the beginning. And then this song arrived & we listened to it, & all of us loved it & unanimously we decided that ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ should be the title of this film.

Tula Kalnnaar Nahi Marathi Movie Cast Photos Trailer Release Date Sonalee Subodh Wiki ImdbIn the future what kind of films would you love to do? Do you have a dream role as such?

I have done 2-3 film which will soon come out, which are of different genres. I have a different look in them & I have worked with different people on these films. Last 3-4 years I have been trying to work in different films.

Yes you did a film like ‘Shutter’ which was very well appreciated.

Yes. In the last three years I have done films like Rama-Madhav, Classmates, Mitwa, Shutter & Poshter Girl. All of these films are completely different from each other. In the future too there are 2-3 such films. Which are definitely different from whatever I’ve done up until now. The very next film of mine is ‘Hampi’ which is directed by Prakash Kunte. It has a truly out of the box character, & I am sure the audiences will love it. Then I am doing a film alongside Amruta Subhash.

Finally, how do you think ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ will connect with the audiences?

It will connect very easily with audiences. Every couple of all ages & who are at different stages of their relationship will relate to this film. In everyone’s lives there is love & there are quarrels too. I am 100% sure that every husband will find his wife in ‘Anjali’ & every wife will find her husband in ‘Rahul’.  I think we should celebrate ‘Relationship Maintenance Day’ on 8th September!

Known for his special talent of playing characters of all sorts in all sorts of films, Subodh Bhave will soon be seen playing another new character in his upcoming film ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’. The film is a light-hearted fun take on today’s relationships & stars Subodh Bhave & Sonalee Kulkarni. This film is set to release on 8th September & is directed by ‘Mitwa’ & ‘Fugay’ fame director Swapna Waghmare-Joshi.

From the trailer of ‘Tula Kalnnaar Nahi’ it seems to be an emotional relationship based film. What excited you about the film?

I think this story belongs to today’s times & it is relatable to all of us. And the treatment of this story is light-hearted & fun. It doesn’t pretend to be socially responsible in anyway. The film still speaks about the relationship of husband-wife in a simple, natural way. Both these characters (Rahul-Anjali) express themselves in an interesting way. They are a couple who were immensely in love with each other before marriage but soon post marriage their married life becomes stressful. This story could have been told in a serious way too, but since it is been treated in a fun way, the subject reaches the audiences even better.

You’ve been paired opposite actress of all age! You suit character of a young man perfectly & you also suit the character of a middle aged person perfectly! What is the secret behind this?

I don’t know the secret! But I try to search for the essence of the character. Once I get that the age doesn’t matter. I would rather thank my directors who consistently thought of me for different characters.Subodh Bhave & Sonalee Kulkarni - Tula Kalnar Nahi Photos

You, Swapna Waghmare-Joshi & Swwapnil Joshi you have teamed up together for the second time after ‘Fugay’. Was there ever a confusion about who would play this character between you & Swwapnil Joshi?

No there wasn’t any confusion because after ‘Mitwa’ Swapna & Sonalee wanted to work together & it was their decision to cast the perfect actor for this role. And I feel grateful that all three of them Swwapnil, Swapna & Sonalee jointly decided to cast me for this role.

This is your first film opposite Sonalee Kulkarni. How did the chemistry work out between you & her?

It was wonderful! I really like her work & I am a fan of her work. The way she has developed her career step by step & by playing different characters is commendable. She was looked at as an dancing actress, & now she has changed that perception. She has established a place for herself in our films. I always wanted to work with her, she too wanted to work with me, but the opportunity didn’t come our way. Finally because of ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ we are working together. We even think alike & we were on same grounds in terms of our creativity our hence journey was simple. Many a times even when I wasn’t aware about what exactly she’ll be doing in a scene, I would still match her & our chemistry worked out very naturally. And finally the job was done right, & it’s the most important thing.

This is your second film with Swapna Waghmare-Joshi after ‘Fugay’. Both films are completely different from each other. How did Swapna Mam’s process of direction changed with this film?

Swapna is good at making the story alive on the screen. She identifies the emotions in the story really well. And she helps us (actors) to emote the little places that are there in the story. So the director is the same, but the stories keep changing. And if the director understands the story well like Swapna then he/she can help to interpret more meanings from the story.Tula Kalnnaar Nahi Marathi Movie Still Photos

Finally tell us when is your next film as a director coming out? After giving us a path-breaking film like ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’.

This year nothing is coming out for sure. By next year when I am done with the writing process of the film, I would start shooting the film. I will surely declare once everything finalizes.

Is that film titled ‘Pushpak Viman’?

No. Pushpak Viman is also there, but this film is different. I am collaborating with Vaibhav (Vaibhav Chinchalkar, producer/director) for ‘Pushpak Viman’. And the other film will be directed by me alone. Once the script is locked I will officially declare everything about it.

Many a times a title track of a film is irrelevant to the actual film & seems to be forcefully included in the film. That is not the case with ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ title song. This song & the video introduces us to the film, the characters & even the conflict of the film. Starring Sonalee Kulkarni & Subodh Bhave ‘Tula Kalnar Nahi’ is directed by ‘Fugay’, ‘Mitwa’ fame Swapna Waghmare Joshi & is produced by Shreea Yogesh Kadam, Arjun Singgh Baran, Kartik Nishandar & Swwapnil Joshi too!

This song is sung by Neha Rajpal & Swapnil Bandodkar, the lyrics are written by Kshitij Patwardhan & the music composer is our favourite Amitraj! This video song can well work as an alternate trailer for the film.

This song presents the complicated love & hate relationship between the lead characters played by Subodh Bhave & Sonalee Kulkarni. The audiences who love movies based on relationships will definitely be excited for this film!

Photocopy Marathi Movie Review :

Photocopy starts with a voice over narration by senior actress Vandana Gupte, where she stresses that the film focuses exclusively on this specific Mahabharat, out of the entire universe. So the story is set in the famous Italian styled township near Pune. What the film does here is that it establishes the world in which it’s set & in a way restricted. People here are mostly rich or higher upper class. So a triangular rom com is pretty convenient here.

Mala & Madhu (Parna Pethe) are twins & exact carbon copies of each other. As expectedly they are poles apart from the inside. So predictably this should lead to the famous comedy of errors which we have seen endless times. Refreshingly Photocopy avoids it. Instead it goes through a different route, the love triangle expressway. Again here there are ‘n’ number of films that we are reminded of. But two important reasons help us to still enjoy this ride.

The most important reason is the Photocopy herself. Parna is outstanding to say the least. It’s a treat to watch her explore the two poles apart characters, though the plot holes keeps hampering her performance. The first half establishes the twins well, but as the film progresses their personalities seems to be manipulated for convenience. In the second half two major logical errors (they are quite evident & self-explanatory) almost ruin the emotional attachment we managed to create with the principle characters. The second reason lies with a supporting character & his contribution towards taking the story forward. Devashish played by Shala fame Anshuman Joshi. Devashish is a unique take on that one guy who’s always there for his girl. By eliminating a romantic angle here, Devashish becomes even more relevant.

Photocopy has pleasing visuals, enjoyable song sequences & a lavish feel that we are used to see in decent rom coms. Another positive is that it manages to explore campus life to an acceptable extent. Earlier in the year we saw Phuntroo which was brilliant in establishing the campus life but lost it entirely when in the second half the plot turned out to be a debacle. Even though Photocopy doesn’t really qualifies to be a “campus life” film, it’s campus interpretations interest us.

The use of Lord Ganesha (the husband of Riddhi-Siddhi) as a metaphor is smartly executed but left in between where there was much scope to explore. Chetan Chitnis, the lead hero stays merely an object both in characterization as well as in the plot. One of the major logical errors involves the convenient ignorance the film shows to him. Hence it becomes difficult on our part & unfair on his part to judge his performance in this film. Chetan will soon be seen in Sachin Kundalkar’s Vajandar, hence we prefer to judge him in that film.

Vandana Gupte’s character (of a modern day grandma) deserved much better treatment in the key moments of the film, which definitely would have helped the cause. Photocopy is directed by actor turned director Vijay Maurya. Vijay has Bollywood films like Anurag Kashyap’s Paanch, Imtiaz Ali’s Socha Na Tha &Nishikant Kamat’s Mumbai Meri Jaan to his credit. He has done a few Marathi films too. As a writer two genuine beauties; Chillar Party & Striker are also to his credit. The reason I mention all this, is the fact that we expected a special Vijay Maurya touch to this film & unfortunately we couldn’t find it. Instead we see the special touch of singer turned producer Neha Rajpal. Don’t ask us how, it’s just that the film represents her personality aptly.

Watch out for the hilarious cameo by our favorite character star Jaywant Wadkar!

Overall:

Photocopy is worth a watch for Perna Pethe alone. The film has a soul that will connect with today’s youth in particular. The plot holes are present throughout but can be ignored if you are not looking for logic every single time. For Rom Com fans Photocopy is a sure shot treat not to be missed!

Bollywood has made numerous films about identical twin with a specialized lost and found formula. Photocopy, a new Marathi film directed by Vijay Maurya also attempts to tell us a story about identical twins. However, it is not about two lost and found sisters.

The official trailer of this film portrays story about two identical twins who look exactly same (Double role by Parn!) but clearly very different personalities. Chatan Chitnis enters in their lives and brings out a love interest. The story unfolds as the emotional twists enter. The two sisters do not realize that they are dating same boy, and he is unaware that these two girls are completely different. This leads to a romantic comedy drama with some emotional roller coaster ride.

The trailer promises us a good film with solid entertainment. Parn already has shown her caliber in YZ and Rama Madhav.  Debutant Chetan Citnis has the charm and screen presence to match with Parn.

The film also stars Vandana Gupte in a very important role. The film is produced by Akash and Neha Rajpal. Moharir, Rohan-Rohan, A.V. Prafullachandra, Praful, Karlekar, Shreyas Puranik, Neha Rajpal has composed the music. The film is slated to release on 16 September all over Maharashtra.

The college romantic comedy Photocopy had its music launch recently. At the event I got an opportunity to chat with Vijay Maurya who has written the screenplay and has also directed the film. An actor popular for his roles in Hindi films, Photocopy is his debut as a director. Here are excerpts from the conversation:

How did you get into direction?

It all started from acting, of course. But then you work with very talented writers and directors and then you get inspired from them. I used to write from college days and slowly found success. Success in the sense people started liking my writing work. That is also how I got inspired from directors I was working with and have now got into direction.

You mentioned that certain directors you worked with inspired you. Who would those be?

Anurag Kashyap with whom I worked in Paanch and Black Friday; Imtiaz Ali (Socha Na Tha); Nishikant Kamat (Mumbai Meri Jaan); Nagesh Kukunoor (Bombay to Bangkok). Working with all these directors inspired me to direct a film.

How did Photocopy happen to you?

The producer Neha Rajpal and I have a common friend in composer Shailendra Barve. They asked Shailendra whether they know Vijay Maurya as they wanted me to write the film based on a story in their mind. Shailendra introduced us to each other and that is how I got attached to the project.

Cast of photocopy unveiled - Chetan Chitnis and Parna Pethe is lead rolesWhat made you take the decision to direct Photocopy?

First of all the story by Neha and Akash Rajpal was very charming. It is about twin sisters falling in love with the same guy. It is a beautiful story with a lot of potential to be fleshed out into a film. I have admired the cinema of Vijay Anand, Mansoor Khan and Imtiaz Ali. They have made romantic films in their own style and with a difference. After the producers approached me with the film, I told them that I will work on the script first. After finishing the script I thought I could attempt to direct the film and at least manage to come up with 10% of what the above mentioned director have achieved. I conveyed this to the producers and they were glad to hear this. And then we started with the filmmaking process.

Now that you have turned director would we continue to see you acting in films as well?

Yes, certainly. But I have become very choosy about the roles. I recently played the lead role in a Konkani film named Naachom la Kumpasar for which I won the Goa State Award. It has been running to packed theatres for the last one and a half year.

I am curious to know your mother tongue.

My mother tongue is Hindi, but I have been born and brought up in Mumbai so Marathi comes easily to me. And Konkani is not too different from Marathi either.

And what about directing films in the future?

It all depends on the script. If the screenplay is good enough I would certainly like to direct a film. I have been directing ad films for a while now. I have made at least 150-200 ad films. But this is my first feature film, so the excitement is that much higher.
