The grand premiere of ‘Var Khali Don Pay’ was recently concluded in the presence of countless Marathi & Hindi celebrities. The play is written & directed by acclaimed young playwright Hrishikesh Koli. It is based on the popular play from the 80s ‘Purush’ written by Jaywant Dalvi & starring Nana Patekar, Reema Lagoo.

This play takes the basic plot points & characters from the old play & makes changes according to today’s times. A play that interrogates the mentality behind ‘Rape’ & domestic violence has some jaw dropping moments. Overall the audiences would be shocked in a pleasing & enlightening way throughout the runtime of the play.

The whole boundaries of theatre in Marathi are broken with ease by Hrishikesh Koli & his team. A stellar star cast that includes Nandita Patkar-Dhuri, Sushil Inamdar, Rohan Gujar, Sangram Samel & Pallavi Patil has given truly rocking performances. Previously the play had been performed on the experimental stage, but now with the backing of Digital Detoxx who are now presenting this play, the play will be performed on a larger scale.This play is produced by ‘Rangalay’. The new presenter of this path-breaking play is Chaitanya Akolkar & Vaishali Rahul Bhosale, Sugandha Suhas Kamble are the producers while Pravin Kamble is the co-producer of ‘Var Khali Don Pay’.

Makrand Anaspure starrer Ranga Patanga has been getting good reviews and awards at various national and international film festivals. The film will be screened at River to River Indian Film Festival in Italy. This will be only Marathi film to be screened in this festival. The film is directed by Prasad Namjoshi.

The festival has been organized at Florence from 3 to 8 December. Earlier, the festival has screened Marathi films like Dombivali Fast, Matimai, and Fandry. Ranga Patanga is a story of a farmer and his hardships. The film stars Makrand Anaspure, Nandita Dhuri, Sandeep Pathak, Gauri Konge, Bharat Ganeshpure, Umesh Jagtap Tejpal Wagh et al.

The film was released theatrically in April and audience have liked it immensely. The critically acclaimed film also received Sant Tukaram Award and best director award. The film also received state awards for best rural film, Best Singer (Adarsh Shinde), best supporting actor (Sandeep Pathak). Chinmay Patankar also received award in Sahyadri Cine Awards for best story.

Rangaa Patangaa Marathi Movie Review:

Rangaa Patangaa is a film of two different halves. Like so many films made in our country it suffers from the second half syndrome. The film promises a genuinely well-made film at the interval point, however, much of that promise is not lived up to by the film in the second half, especially with that contrived ending.

‘Mere Ranga-Patanga jhapadna mangta hain’, we hear a man saying these words to a police officer in the opening scene of the film. Visibly Muslim, the man has adopted a forlorn demeanor that the peasants of our society naturally adopt in front of a government authority. The police officer after casually making a few usual religiously bigoted remarks throws the man named Jumman (Makarand Anaspure) out of his police station as he is aghast at the knowledge that Ranga-Patanga are not the peasant’s children but his two bulls. He also threatens ‘to make a bull out of him’ if he comes into the police station again with that sort of a complaint as he is already inundated with a lot of work. And with that the rest of the film follows Jumman on his search for his two bulls whom he has reared like his own children.

The first half raised my hopes quite high. In the recent past Marathi cinema has developed a reputation for coming up with a few gem of films every year. These gems tell a fresh, rooted tale and also many times push the envelope. Ranga-Patanga had all the making of such a film. The most notable thing about the film is the humour. Despite the plot not being rather upbeat, there are numerous humourous situations in the early half. All of them feel organic to the setting and they are certainly the high points of the screenplay. The humour here is gentle, quirky and slapstick, all at the same time and still that lingering sense of loss that Jumman feels is not lost on the viewer; such skillful direction is a rarity.

Then it is the earthiness of the film that works like a charm. It is set in the arid Vidarbha region of Maharashtra and the characters, the language they speak all come across as very authentic. The top quality of acting by the leads is also crucial to the humour and earthiness. Makarand Anaspure who is a star in his own right gives a display of how underused an actor he is. He underplays his part to great effect and is mighty successful in bringing out the turmoil in the mind of the childless farmer whose two bulls whom he has reared like his children have gone missing. Sandeep Pathak too shines in his role as his mischievous and street smart childhood friend, bringing just the right amount of humour into play.

Amol Gole’s evocative camerawork makes Vidarbha a character in itself here. For once, a marathi film manages to get its background score right and Kaushal Inamdar should be lauded for it and also the moving song in the film with some great lyrics.

However, after the interval point it all starts taking somewhat of a dip. The film enters the Peepli Live territory of media exploiting the crisis in hand which is quite done to death by now, to be honest. The humour becomes typical, the acting by the supporting cast ordinary. The freshness that the film had in the first half starts to vanish as the screenplay covers grounds that has already been explored in other films. But, this detour into how the media reacts to the Jumman’s crisis doesn’t hurt the film as much as the finale, though.

The end of the film is quite contrived. I was left rather disappointed by the unconvincing and contrived ending as the film has so many things going for it. It seems as if the end has been purposefully concocted keeping the commercial interests in mind. The finale somewhat dampens what could have been a genuinely good film that one can praise without any reservations.

Overall:

Well-acted, humourous and rooted Rangaa Patangaa has a promising first half. But the second half doesn’t live up to expectations and ends in a contrived and unconvincing manner spoiling what could have been a genuinely good film. It is still eminently watchable, though.

Synposis :
Rangaa Patangaa is a simple tale of companionship. Of Jumman’s companionship with his wife Noor, with his cattle and also with fellow farmer, Popat. The film talks about a farmer’s struggle. Jumman, who has been treating his bullocks as his own children, finds them absconding from the shed on one fateful day. Thus starts the farmer’s journey in search of his bullocks. It becomes an issue and takes a political turn with the media that has come to cover drought, finds a ‘story’ in Jumman’s lost bullocks.

Zee Marathi has geared up for launch of new serial, Maze Pati Saubhagyawati, with a unique concept which has already created huge buzz and curiosity in the viewers. We spoke to the multi-talented actor Vaibhav Mangle about his new role. Here is what Vaibhav told us ex-tempore.

What is the tele-scenario of the show?

It is said that to understand a woman one needs to step into her shoes. Maze Pati Saubhagyawati is a story about a man who realizes the worth of a woman when he himself has to essay the role of one. Vaibhav is a struggling actor who came to Mumbai 14 years ago along with his wife Lakshmi and dreams of becoming a successful actor. But unfortunately Vaibhav and Lakshmi have not been able to accomplish their dreams and are still where they started from. However, after a series of rejections, Vaibhav has reached a stage where his belief in himself has slowly begun to crumble. He’s got one last chance to give himself and Lakshmi a better life. A role, if he performs well, will not only start his career but also change his perspective of looking at life. But, call this his fortune, or add it to list of despairs, the role is such that he cannot disclose it to anyone. It’s the role of female lead in a show.

Does this change your character in any way?

Yes. In the process, Vaibhav who is a chauvinistic husband and has always took his wife for granted starts realizing her worth. He starts to realize experiences the struggles of a woman, her pain, her happiness and her aspirations making him empathize with his wife more.

What are the other credits of the show?

This intriguing drama is produced by Teamwork Ultra creations banner, and directed by Mandar Devsthali, who has given extremely popular serials like Honar Sunn Mi Hya Gharachi to the audience. Stage and film actress Nandita Dhuri will be playing my wife’s role. She is an extremely talented actress. Ashok Shinde and Ramesh Bhatkar will be also seen in the supporting roles.

How did you prepare yourself for the role?

I have played such characters earlier in shows like ‘FU BAI FU’ and other plays and I could easily get into the character and since I had earlier worked with Ramesh Bhatkar and Ashok Shinde, Uday Sabnis, Ajit Kelkar, it was easier for me to essay the character.
