गाण्यात दीपाली सय्यद, मनोज जोशी, किशोरी शहाणे, मकरंद अनासपुरे, रेणुका शहाणे, शिल्पा अनासपुरे, पुष्कर जोग, स्मिता गोंदकर, शरद पोंक्षे, वर्षा उसगावकर, मानसी नाईक, गायत्री दातार, नितीश चव्हाण, स्मिता शेवाळे, देवदत्त नागे, किरण गायकवाड असे दिग्गज कलाकार एकत्र दिसणार आहेत. गाण्याचे दिग्दर्शन व संकलन मकरंद शिंदे यांनी केले असून, संगीत जीवन मराठे यांनी दिले आहे, गाण्याचे शब्द वैशाली मराठे, सुरेखा मराठे, शौनक कंकाल यांचे असून हे जीवन मराठे, कविता राम, राजेश्वरी पवार, क्रिशा चिटणीस यांनी गायलं आहे. तर पोस्टर अनिल शिंदे यांनी बनवलं आहे. गाण्याची संकल्पना अभिनेत्री दीपाली सय्यद यांची असून हे गाणं रसिकांसमोर आणण्यासाठी श्रीनिवास कुलकर्णी, अमोल घोडके, राजेंद्र अनासपुरे यांनी पुढाकार घेतला.

Mantra Movie Review:

Mantra is a film that is weaker in craft & technique at many instances but the lasting impression it makes purely on what it wants to say & how clearly & confidently it says it overpowers it’s weakness when looked in totality, having said that the message or the philosophy that the film abides by could have been organically imbibed into the screenplay of the film.

The film begins with flashback hinting us that something drastic has happened in the life of the protagonist. While in most of recent Marathi films the use of flashback isn’t really justified, here it makes sense & makes us connect with the protagonist. Niranjan (Saurabh Gogate) belonging to a ‘purohit’ family is all set for his CA preparations, his father (Manoj Joshi) & his elder brother (Pushkaraj Chirputkar) aren’t unhappy with his decision of not taking up the ‘purohit’ work. But soon an opportunity lands up in the family which requires one of the priests from within the family (which also includes Niranjan’s uncle) to shift to Germany at a temple that requires a priest.

The elder brother has an inferiority complex about English or any foreign language & culture, he isn’t ready to move to Germany. This uncle is already interested but then Niranjan shows interest & since the requirement was of a young (& a physically fit person to adapt easily to the climate) priest, Niranjan’s father Shridhar Pant approves him! But only after confronting him about his sudden change of plan!

Now majority of the film’s ‘point’ relies on the characterization of ‘Shridhar Pant’ his values, his calmness & his studios nature about religion & spirituality. He is almost a ‘Gandhi-like’ figure of this field. Is he believable? To me he was! No matter how rare, there are people like him in all facets of life! People who are honest in their work & who search for ‘satisfaction’ in every little deed they do. Manoj Joshi gets to play an exact opposite version of a priest from what he played in ‘Dashkriya’! And he is very much effective here!

Moving onto Niranjan, he has enrolled into a German speaking class every evening accompanied by his best friend ‘Sunny’ (Shubhankar Ekbote), son of a politician. In the morning under his father’s guidance Niranjan is learning all the rituals which he needs to be aware of to function as a priest in Germany. Now enters the female lead of the film, Antara Joshi played by Deepti Devi, (she too is in the German speaking class) a hardcore atheist who has just got over a break up. Now Antara is a progressive modern day woman who smokes cigarettes, & has blacklisted every religion, religious practices, etc as she had been through a tragedy! Well, Antara is just as cliché as she could be, yet there’s a moment in the film in the climax where she becomes more than just a caricature & makes a healthy contribution in making the ‘point’ of the film.

While I can’t reveal what the film says about theism vs atheism or what it’s point is regarding ‘religion’ & the people who practice it professionally like the mentioned priests, I would still say that the film says something very fundamental! The purpose of religion & the idea of god had a fundamental purpose in our lives, one that gives us inner peace & is very much personal. But does the film say that religion is irreplaceable? Or it says that it’s all up to us? That’s for you to know!

Overall:

‘Mantra’ could have trimmed it’s length a bit, avoiding few scenes set in the German speaking class or from the Niranjan-Sunny track. The film could have been dubbed better. At many instances it’s evident that we are not hearing the actual voice from the scene. Sparing these flaws ‘Mantra’ needs to be seen in today’s religiously polluted atmosphere to find some clarity about the subject & it’s practical influence on our lives.

Then his father, a very honest believer, is the only person who can help the boy complete the journey of realisation by answering questions about God, religion and temples. The explanation of his father is decoded for the boy through the experience created by Antara.

Dashkriya Marathi Movie Review:

Dashkriya starts off on a highly dramatic ‘Dashkriya’ (10th Day Ritual of an deceased person) scene establishing Manoj Joshi as ‘Keshav Bhat’, an outright villain. Throughout the film no matter what the situations are ‘Keshav Bhat’ has been strictly projected as a villain, also in situations where he clearly classifies as ‘victim’. I agree that such scenes are few, but the point is that this film just doesn’t believe in ‘grey’. It feels to have a preconceived understanding of everything & has ruthlessly sorted the ‘black’ & ‘white’.

Another clear bifurcation is evident in the very next song sequence that follows the ‘dramatic’ opening scene. It’s the usual fun song for kids, alike countless others seen before in other films. There is nothing wrong with the song, but it’s placement itself is so baffling to the audience. It’s like you have to instantly change your state of the mind. And then this same exercise needs to be continued throughout the runtime! It’s like watching two different films at the same time, scene by scene alternatingly! One that follows the opening ‘drama’ & the other that is a ‘slice of life’ comedy! A better story teller could’ve chosen neither of the two & would have preferred a ‘dark satire’ instead!

So is it just the treatment where ‘Dashkriya’ baffles, disappoints? No! The basic story itself is baffling. There are just too many things happening! ‘Paithan’ is the place where this story is set. Most of the men (Milind Shinde, Nandkishor Choughule & Santosh Mayekar) among the important characters are drunkards. A socially relevant subject is included here, that has nothing to do with the main conflict. Now these drunkards are a part of every social, religious activity in the village. They almost appear normal when they are sober. So in a way this makes us feel that everything’s fine with their lives. And hence the whole point of alcoholism becomes weak.

Then what is the main conflict? There are two plots in my observation one is a little boy’s story & another is Keshav Bhat’s story. This little boy ‘Bhanya’ (belonging to a lower caste) skips school & works on the river banks of ‘Paithan’ where tourists come to perform ‘Dashkriya’ for their closed deceased ones. The god men who perform these rituals belong to a specific sub-caste of ‘Kirvant’. Now Bhanya works with them as a apprentice of sort, there’s another weaker ‘Kirvant’ played by Milind Phatak with whom Bhanya has a better connect than with the powerful ‘Keshav Bhat’. Then there’s an elderly righteous man ‘Savkar’ played by Dilip Prabhawalkar. Though ‘Savkar’ has less to do directly throughout the film, he seems to be important only because he is played by Dilip Prabhawalkar, a veteran!

Many tourists that come to ‘Paithan’ are supposedly feeling exploited by ‘Keshav Bhat’. In a cameo Jaywant Wadkar plays a tourist & speaks how these god men are asking too much money. The thing is we never see what actually happened. We just see Wadkar confronting Savkar about it.

Bhanya’s mother is trying her best to make ends meet, her husband (Milind Shinde) does nothing substantial. At first she scolds Bhanya for skipping school but later she seems to be happy & proud about her son who starts earning a better sum working on the river banks! This shift of perspective has never been explained! Meanwhile ‘Keshav Bhat’ & his whole sub-caste where insulted in a social gathering by Savkar. Why? Wasn’t Savkar a righteous man! Even in this situation the background score suggests that ‘Keshav Bhat’ is the baddie!

At the end of the film, bits & pieces of the two stories are hurriedly jointed & the climax is created, a climax which actually is a lot stronger than the whole film. That makes a strong social statement! But by then we are too much exhausted by the proceedings that came before. That statement makes sense to just the climax, not to the whole film. The whole film is a jumble if we try to make interpretations about social messages or statements.

Overall:

Dashkriya is a missed opportunity. Had the film realized that the whole process is as important as the final statement, we could’ve got a more pure film. Dashkriya is polluted by a need to be commercially viable to all audiences, even at that it doesn’t succeed much.

The best part about this trailer is that it is perfectly crafted & timed. It doesn’t reveal anything from the conflict of the film, yet it gives a good idea about the whole atmosphere of the film, the story & its social context.

Sanjay Krishnaji Patil who has previously written a masterpiece like ‘Jogwa’ is back with ‘Dashkriya’ after a long time. This trailer makes us think that this film touches on a sensitive topic about class difference & religious customs & rituals. Actor Manoj Joshi who won a national award for his role in this film looks in top form. The young child actor too looks perfect for the part. It is definitely one of the most important film of this year releasing by the end of the year!

Synopsis : After the cremation of the deceased, certain rituals are performed for the next thirteen day, as there is a belief that these rituals lead the deceased to Moksha i.e. salvation from the cycle of rebirths. Immersion of ashes is performed on the third day and the final round of rituals takes place on the tenth day. These rituals are to be performed on the banks of the Ganges, the sacred river. The emotionally vulnerable family of the deceased readily performs the rites as per the instructions of the Kirvant i. e. the section of the Brahmin community who is supposed to lead all the last rites and thereby earn their living. The Kirvants, looked down upon by the rest of the Brahmin community, exploit the emotions of the bereaved family to satiate their greed. The whole exercise is thus commercialized crossing all the limits. ‘ Dashakriya ’ ( The Tenth Day Ritual) profoundly depicts this harsh reality.

While revealing the disturbing reality around the last rites, their commercialization and the emotional exploitation of the bereaved family ‘ Dashakriya ’ focuses on how even the Kirvant kids mindlessly get involved in the business due to extreme poverty.

Over the years the Goa Film Festival has developed a sense of credibility regarding Marathi movies. This year many National award winning movies were lined up for screenings at the festival. Among them was the National award winning Marathi film ‘Dasahkriya‘.

Our Maharashtra is one state where on one hand we have made many scientific & technological advancements but on the other hand our food providers our farmers have always struggled to live a satisfying life & to fulfill their basic needs. Very few films have managed to showcase this stark reality convincingly.

Upendra Limaye starrer “Kshitij” seems to be an welcome exception. The film’s trailer was recently posted on social media & the trailer looks both technically & emotionally impactful. Somewhere the trailer hints us that education could eventually turn out to be a boon to help the farmers.
