Marathi cinema has come a long way from the last decade. Not only is there a rise in the quality of the films, a few of them have also managed to have a great run in the theatres. Here’s an attempt to look at the most successful Marathi films in terms of gross collections at the box office.

Timepass 2

Ravi Jadav is a star director of marathi cinema. He has only given superhits to the marathi film industry. Natrang, Balak Palak, Timepass all were huge hits. But the sequel to Timepass was a bigger hit than all the previously mentioned films. The film rode on the popularity of the first film. It supposedly earned close to Rs. 35 crore at the box office.

Lai Bhaari

Ritiesh Deshmukh debuted in the marathi film industry with a bang. Directed by Nishikant Kamat, Lai Bhaari was an instant hit. It used all the tropes of usual commercial Indian cinema and came up with a winner of a film. The music by Ajay-Atul was also popular. Lai Bhaari also earned close to Rs. 40 crores at the box office, but supposedly a little less than Katyar.

Katyar Kaljaat Ghusli

Again an adaptation of a classic Sangeet Natak, this film that released in 2015 had enthralled one and all. The delectable classical music and the solid story was a winning combination. Great performances by Sachin Pilgaonkar and Subodh Bhave further lend the film the much needed push at the box office. Produced by Zee studios, this film also approximately earned close to Rs. 40 crores at the box office, but supposedly a little less than Natsamrat which also earned from shows in US and other countries.

Natsamrat

The Nana Patekar starrer melodrama adapted from a seminal play by the created a furor at the box office at the beginning of the year. The story of a retired thespian being ill-treated by his own children touched the heart of Maharashtra. Nana Patekar gave one of his best ever performances and impressed one and all. Produced by Great Marathi Entertaiment, Fincraft Media and Gajanan Chitra and distributed by Zee, Natsamrat was till a few months back the highest grossing Marathi film with a collection of approx. Rs. 40 crores.

Sairat

Even two weeks into its release, Sairat still has the whole of Maharashtra under its spell. People are still queuing up outside cinema halls in every nook and corner of the state. Within 2 weeks itself it has broken the all-time record of a marathi film’s collection at the box office. The epic love story with a tragic end has struck a chord with the classes as well as the masses of Maharashtra. Ajay-Atul’s music is superhit! sairat has the rare distinction of being the film that has won over the critics and the audiences alike. It has grossed Rs. 41 crore till now and the numbers are still pretty much steady. Most trade analysts are not counting off Sairat crossing the Rs. 60 crore mark, with the Rs. 50 crore mark well in sight. This is a massive jump from the second highest grosser of Rs. 40 crore. This shows that the film is working due to its content and not only due to the massive promotions by Zee.

Review:

A musical saga filled with numerous outstanding songs can gain acceptance even if the overall content falls in the above-average category. But this is not the case with Subodh Bhave’s Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. The film excels in every department and turns out to be a treat for your senses.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli is based on the Marathi musical play of the same name. The story takes place in the pre-independence era in Vishrampur, Madhya Pradesh. Pandit (Shankar Mahadevan), a master in classical singing, has been a Rajgayak at the King’s court. As a reward for being a Rajgayak, the king decides to present him a royal dagger (Katyar).

Pandit comes across Khan Saahab (Sachin Pilgaonkar), a singer of a different gharana, at another village. Bowled over by his talent, he suggests Khan Saahab to migrate to Vishrampur so that he earns a decent living. After migrating to Vishrampur, Khan Saahab gives and outstanding performance during a jugalbandi with Pandit. However, the King declares Pandit the winner. This is just the start of Khan Saahab’s frustration. Later on, a young aspiring singer (Subodh Bhave) becomes an important part of Khan Saahab’s enmity with Pandit.

Normally, a musical film deals with subjects like romance or some serious drama. But KKG is a rare music-oriented film whose subject is a mixture of one-upmanship, betrayal and revenge. The writer has blended each of these aspects naturally with music through a intelligent, fast moving script. The duration of 2 hours and 41 minutes doesn’t appear lengthy at all.

The film is Bhave’s first as a director. But he has handled the film like a pro. There is a long list of scenes that leave behind a mark. In fact, it won’t be an overstatement that his next directorial venture is keenly awaited.

Music is the soul in this genre. So, the music just has to be impressive. But what the composers have achieved here is pure excellence! The tracks lead you to a trance.

The film also triumphs in the technical aspects. You can’t help but notice the artistic abilities of the DoP. The background score and editing too are praiseworthy.

The film does have few incidents in the second half that are questionable. On one or two occasions in this half, the going gets a bit dull.

Lastly, the performances take the film few notches higher. Sachin Pilgaonkar surprises you with his brilliant act as Khan Saahab. This is easily one of his career best acts. Subodh Bhave once again excels by showing a lot of dedication.

Shankar Mahadevan makes an impressive acting debut. His acting skills are on display in the latter part. Amruta Khanvilkar, Mrunmayee Deshpande and Pushkar Shrotri are good in supporting roles.

Overall:

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli is an overwhelming musical saga. The film will do well at the box office despite the presence of Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 and Bollywood’s hugely awaited Prem Ratan Dhan Payo.

Movies has different genre, one is the prestigious and second one is the sequel. Both movies are important for Audience even they expressed their feelings towards these two movies.

What will happen on 12th November, will time of these 3 movies clashed or what? There is all over confusion going on in mind of every marathi movie’s fan.

If we think positively then it means it’s an advantage, because we can celebrate Diwali watching these movies. But little worry also of ONE releasing date of both the movies. Yes! Both movies are worth to watch and fans can’t even think of loss because Marathi movies are breaking records at box office, marathi film industry is now on the top. And we feel proud of this. Audience doesn’t want to lose its dignity. However, hope that marathi movie lovers will now change their mind and feel free to post on media that ‘no problem, we will book another show also.’

May be if producers decided, date is fixed then it cannot be changed in any condition. Might be there is some reasons behind choosing the date, we don’t know everything. Just keep faith and trust in our love towards marathi industry. They entertain us with full energetic performance.

Sachin started his journey in the film industry as a child artiste, after doing many roles in Hindi and Marathi, he became director and producer. His movies became milestones in Marathi industry and box office was always favourable to him. His latest role as Khansaheb in Subodh BHave’s Katyar Kaljat Ghusali has already made audience very curious!

Why is this film so important to you?

This is a classic role. Vasantrao Deshpande has taken this role to another level with his performance. Though I do not wish to get compared with him, I was a bit skeptical about this role. I have never played a Muslim classical singer previously. Subodh was very insistent that I will be able to do justice to this role. I did a screen-test with costumes and makeup which made me more confident.

How did you prepare for the role of Khansaheb?

My look was designed by ace make-up artiste Vikram Gaikwad. Judging by the audience reactions of promo, we will say this has really paid off. The results are fantastic. The look is very elegant, authentic andtrue to the core of this character. Though I am a director, I left myself totally under the baton of Subodh. His vision will be different from me, I trusted his vision and his instincts.  I had seen the original play six to seven times, and I have personally met Vasantrao Deshpande. He has sung for some of my films as playback singer, however, I never thought that time about performing this same role.

You are a singer too. But you have not sung for this film?

A person should know his weaknesses and I don’t know classical music,  so I left the singing to the original Khansaheb,  Vasantrao Deshpande’s grandson Rahul Deshpande. He has sung nine songs in the film composed by Shankar  Mahadevan. Shankar has done role of Panditji and as he is a fabulous singer, he has sung all his own songs. However, I have been given a playback and it is the correct way.

Any memorable incidents while shooting for the film?

There are many! Film like this not only looks grand on the screen, but making is also filled with little anecdote.
Shankar and me are ardent foodies. On the sets, we used to keep ordering from various restaurants and always exchanged information about which cuisines and restaurants are worth trying. It was also good to work with good artistes like Amruta Khanvilkar and Saakshi Tanwar.

How happy are you with this film?

I am very happy because I have played a character with a negative shade for the first time. Very few people know my passion about Urdu. This film gave me a chance to speak Urdu throughout this film as my character hails from Bareilly. I have learnt Urdu many years back and my wife and daughter used to make fun of me whenever I speak Urdu. But see, all that practice has come handy for this film!

The official promo of epic “Katyar Kaljat Ghusali” is out and it has wowed us again! The promo features some of the emotional scenes and a brief storyline of the film, and it is surely power-packed. The promo shows Sachin’s entry as Khansaheb and his constant rivalry with Panditji- played by Shankar Mahadevan.

The look of the film is very grand and unlike any Marathi film till date. The costume drama takes place in a state where the king organizes a contest to choose a “Court Singer” i. e. Raj Gayak. The title is very prominent and comes with lavish palace. What happens in this contest sets off an emotional drama and brings out the various shades of these characters. The film is based on a classic Marathi play written by Purushottam Darvekar. The play became immoral with its astounding and spellbinding music by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki. The film’s promo features some of the songs in the background and it is mesmerizing again.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali– a film directed by Subodh Bhave has already been in the news for its awesome music. Soor Niragas Ho by Shankar Mahadevan and Dil KI tapish by Rahul Deshpande are already becoming popular among audience. The complete album of 20 songs for this film was launched recently in a grand event. The entire cast and crew of the film was present for this music launch ceremony.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli has been a mile-stone for Marathi theatre. The play was written by Purushottam Darvekar and its immortal music was composed by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki. Actor-director Subodh Bhave has turned this play into a feature film. The film stars Sachin, Amruta Khanvilkar, Subodh Bhave, Sakshi Tanvar, Mrunmayee Deshpande and Shankar Mahadevan in leading roles.

Subodh Bhave said on this occasion, “Though this film is based on the play, this is a new approach and should not be compared to the original. Along with the songs from the play, the film also has some new songs. I am sure people will love these songs equally”

Shankar Mahadevan commented that he is emotionally involved in this project due to its music. “I have always been passionate about Marathi Sangeet natak. It was a challenge for me to compose music for this film, which will be having songs composed by Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki as well. The soul of these songs is spirituality of classical music. Maintaining that spirituality throughout the film was a herculean task for us.”

Ehsaan Noorani, another composer for the music has expressed that even today’s generation will love this Indian Classical music. “This is our first film where we have composed classical music. Our love and passion for classical music has made us to work really hard on this project.”

The album features twenty songs and singers include eminent names like Mahesh Kale- disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Bollywood singers Arijit Singh, Divya Kumar, Sawani Shende. Highlight of the album are the voices of Rahul Deshpande- grandson of Pandit Vasantrao Deshpande and renowned classical singer and Shankar Mahadevan. The lyrics of this film have been penned by Prakash Kapadiya, Sameer Samant, Mangesh Kangne, and Mandar Cholkar.
The film will release on 12 November all over Maharashtra.

We have already told you how much we are excited by Subodh Bhave’s “Katyar Kaljat Ghusali”. The new song released by this film on social media has taken this excitement to another level altogether.

Dil Ki Tapish features Sachin Pilgaonkar as Khan Saheb. The song is picturized in a darbar on Sachin singing in front of the royal audience. What are we excited about this time? Rahul Deshpande. We have seen him acting as a Khansaheb in a recently revived play on TV where he excelled in singing and acting. Here we can hear him as a playback singer. His clearcut voice, excellent command over the raag and expressions has made this song as a gem. The music given by Shankar Ehsan Loy stays true to the soul of the song and keeps the freshness of classical music as it is.

The trailer also features sweet smiling Shankar appreciating the song in the darbar. Sachin as Khansaheb has lots of different shades to his role, his simplicity and understanding of the classical music makes him more believable as a classical singer.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusli, a film by Subodh Bhave has already created huge expectations from audience. The first song of this film was released recently on social media. The song “Soor Niraagas Ho” is a Ganesh vandana which has been released on the occasion of Angaraki Chaturthi.

This is an original song and not taken from the play. The song is composed by Shankar Ehsan Loy and sung by magical Shankar Mahadevan. Shankar is also starring the film in the role of Panditji and this song is picturised on him.

The complete look of the film is very grand at the same time very subtle. The sets or costumes are not very splendid in comparison with SLB, but they seem to be relevant with the storyline and period.

Shankar Mahadevan, a legendary singer and composer will be making his acting debut with Subodh Bhave’s Katyar Kaljat Ghusali. This is a cinematic adaptation of the play which created history with its melodious songs and tunes. Shankar Mahadevan will be seen in the role of Pandit Bhanushankar Shastri. His look in the film was unveiled recently in an event in Mumbai. Along with cast and crew of the film, Tabla Maestro Taufiq Qureshi was present for this event.

The main attraction of this film will be its music as the plot revolves around feud between two musical performers and their traditional gayaki gharanas. Interestingly, Shankar Mahadevan along with Ehsan and Loy has given music for this film. While speaking on the occasion Shankar said, “The story of this play is still relevant today. What Pandit Abhisheki has done in terms of music is a history in itself. I am just glad that I am working on this project as a music director as well. Acting made me nervous as the role of Panditji was very challenging. I just gave myself completely to director Subodh Bhave and he explained the nuisances of this character. We have added a new song “Soor Niragas Ho” for Ganesh Vandana. The song is a summary of this film. Purity is soul for music and we have tried to maintain that purity through this music.”

This film will also mark a directorial debut for Subodh Bhave. He commented, “I cannot sing, but I have immense love and faith for classical music. This is just a small tribute from my side to this vast ocean of music.”

The film will release on 13 November all over Maharashtra.
