From 18th June a new serial started it’s telecast on Star Pravah. ‘Chatriwali’ instantly has made a connection with the audiences. Namrata Pradhan plays the lead role of a simple-minded middle-class girl who’s the biggest identity is her ‘Chatri’. On this occasion here’s the conversation we had with her!

This is your first serial. How were you selected for ‘Chatriwali’?

I am fond of acting from my childhood. I knew about the auditions for this serial & I sent my photos to them. I was selected for it & I underwent two look tests. They liked my look & found the ‘Chatriwali’ within me & in a way my dream came true.

Is there anything common between you & ‘Madhura’ (Chatriwali)?

Yes. Madhura & me, we are no different because I am very close to my family just like her. Madhura takes all her decisions after thinking thoroughly, I am no different here too. Moreover, I am a confident girl just like Madhura. Hence, I needn’t do anything extraordinary to play her part!

There are quite a few experienced actors alongside you in this serial. How is your experience working with them?

Too good! We have fun all the time on the set. Hence, the atmosphere on the set is pleasant. More importantly, we rehearse every scene together. Everyone take care of me while rehearsing. They help me if I am going wrong. I have developed great chemistry with all of them.

Star Pravah has given opportunities to many new actors. Now you are one of them. How do you feel about it?

It’s my luck that I am making my debut with Star Pravah. Many artists of recent times started their careers with Star Pravah. I have made a nice relation with Star Pravah’s creative team, our producer & director.

Madhura & her ‘Chatri’ have a close relation. How special is ‘Chatri’ for you?

I am fond of ‘Chatri’ for sure. In a way, it’s a need during monsoons but I also use ‘Chatri’ during the summer season. Now because of this serial ‘Chatri’ has become an inseparable part of my life!

Review:

This is a love tale about a westernized boy Indrajeet (Kashyap Parulekar) and Shubhangi (debutant Manasi Moghe) a lavni folk dancer. Subhangi is an orphan raised by a Tamasha dancer Chandraprabha Sanglikar (Deepa Chaphekar) who has a relationship with Raosaheb (Mohan Joshi). Keeping the trend of Tamasha movies in Marathi, however the film fails to grasp the nuisances of this genre.

The film is directed by veteran director Mansingh Pawar. Indrajeet is a rich heir who comes to India after ten years in US learning western classical singing. His parents Appasaheb and Padmaja Mohite (Ramesh Bhatkar and Illa Bhate) express the need to look after the family business. However, Indrahjeet has other interests, he wants to study the lavni and tamashas singing and so he befriends the beautiful folk dancer Shubhangi. Songs, dances, music, lavani.. what else is required here? These both artistes fall in love. However given their family backgrounds, we are assured that this is not going to be a mushy love story. On top of that Raosaheb, a perfect villain has an eye on Shubhangi. Well, anybody can guess.

For this type of film, the biggest strength should be its music. Bugadee completely fails on this aspect. No song is remembered by the audience once film is over. Even during the film, the songs hinder the drama. The first half is just spent on good ol’ Boy meets girl scenario. Second half has some drama, but it’s too predictable. The plot of the revolves around tamasha, yet it does not give any justice to this folk art. The main lead looks completely alien in traditional lavani dress. Neither she has any grace or dance skill for such role. Mansi Moghe, a pageant beauty queen does not look even an inch of Lavni dancer. Even in acting department, it is better not to comment.

Choreographer Deepali Vichare’s has done a wonderful job while keeping the dance routines simple and traditional. But it has no impact on audience, which is a pity! Kashyap proves himself to be a good actor and does better than his debut film ‘Taptapadi’. Illa Bhate, Ramesh Bhatkar, Deepjyoti Naik, Deepa Chaphekar, Megha Ghadge support, well. Mohan Joshi is his usual evil self and essays his role with aplomb. The editor could have trimmed the film in the first half as the tempo of the film in the first half is slow and doesn’t grab the audience’s attention other than the interesting opening sequence.

All in all a film meant for the interiors and stations like Kolhapur, Sholapur but the multiplex audiences won’t patronize the film and the film is likely to do well in the single screens only.

    Rating : **½

    Story Outline :

Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story, the film is set during the pre-independence era in Maharashtra. Meera has been staying with her aunt (Ashwini Ekbote) and uncle (Sharad Ponkshe) ever since her mother passed away when she was six years old. Over there, Meera develops a close bond with her cousin Madhav.

As they grow up (as Veena Jamkar and Kashyap Parulekar), their friendship slowly blossoms into love. When Madhav is studying to become a doctor, they get married. The couple is enjoying their marital bond until Meera has a miscarriage. There’s further agony in store for her when she becomes disabled. This results in another woman Sunanda (Shruti Marathe) entering Madhav’s life. Will Madhav betray Meera by marrying Sunanda?

    Review :

Adapting Rabindranath Tagore’s story on celluloid in a different cultural setting and that too in your first film is no mean task. Debutant Sachin Baliram Nagargoje does show signs of maturity in his adaptation of the legendary writer’s tale in his Marathi filmTaptapadi. However, few problem areas stop the film from being superlative. Nevertheless, it is worth watching once due to Veena Jamkar’s outstanding act.Taptapadi Marathi Movie Main Poster

Although the story takes place in the very olden days of the pre-independence era, it is shot and narrated in a completely new age manner. As a writer, Nagargoje has used simple yet smart techniques to connect scenes and take the story forward. The important and delicate issue of Meera’s disability too is introduced and developed intelligently. Santosh Suvarnakar’s artistic camerawork is also something that makes the film a visual treat.

However, all is not hunky dory for Taptapadi. The film loses pace after a point in the second half. But there are two other questionable aspects that hurt the most. Firstly, the change of heart of an important character doesn’t appear convincing. You can’t ignore this point since it is an important development in the story. Lastly, although the twist at the very end takes you by surprise and appears pleasurable, it is incomplete and lacks proper logic. It also brings back memories of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Parineeta.

Sumeet Bellari and Rohit Nagbhide composed songs are soulful and apt for the situations but a couple of songs affect the narration. The background score is as per the need.

Talking about the performances, it is Veena Jamkar all the way! She gets into the skin of a difficult character and produces a performance that is worthy of all the applause. In fact, this will be one of the talked about acts of her career. Kashyap Parulekar too plays his part perfectly. It’s just that he doesn’t appear a college student on few occasions.

Neena Kulkarni, as Madhav’s aunt, is excellent as the regressive and manipulative lady. You just love to hate her! Shruti Marathe fits the character well and gives a good performance. As Meera’s brother, Ambarish Deshpande is perfect as the revolutionary and a protective elder brother. Sharad Ponkshe and Ashwini Ekbote and the rest of the supporting actors offer decent support.

    Overall :

Taptapadi is a one-time watch, mostly due to Veena Jamkar.
