In such a rich history of Marathi cinema very few times, we have seen the culture of Maharashtra’s very own paradise ‘Konkan’ being represented & explored! The ‘Shimga’ festival in Konkan is of utmost importance & there are countless religious & cultural activities that take place during it. Now finally we have a Marathi film titled ‘Shimga’ that is set in Konkan & where the festivals seem to be an important backdrop to the story.

The teaser of the film that stars Bhushan Pradhan, Rajesh Shringarpure & Kamlesh Sawant has truly captured the essence of the festival & also seems to have incorporated ”drama’ into it. It would be interesting to see what exactly is the plot of the film.

The beautiful locales of Konkan, the iconic ‘Konkan Railway’ all have found a place in the teaser. From the times of ‘Gomu Maherla Jaate ho Nakhwa” to the recent “Gaaz Yeta Go” there have been iconic songs set in the Konkan backdrop. Re Raya Review (Marathi Movie):

Re Raya is a film that lacks any serious inclination towards getting into the soul of the subject. It uses a usual sports drama template & adds anti-system rants to make it seem important. The film fails to make any connect with the audiences & struggles at basic technical aspects of cinema too.

The film starts off with Aadesh’s childhood (Bhushan Pradhan) & how he struggled a bit & made a mark as an athletic. This whole childhood sequence has very little to do with the actual film. The actual starting point of the film is when Aadesh doesn’t win the prestigious ‘Shiv Chhatrapati Puraskar’ (an actual award given to sportspersons & athletes of Maharashtra). The obsession of Indian athletes with such government awards is openly known, however never does ‘Re Raya’ think of it that it’s principally wrong for athletes to be so obsessed with a mere award! It never even tries to explain the importance of this award to us! However it uses the ‘award’ as the most important plot device! Later when Aadesh trains young kids for different athletic games he even says that he wants them to win the award which he couldn’t win!

These 3 young kids belong to the lowest strata of Aadesh’s village. None of them have any inclination towards sports. However they are good at certain talents that are tailor made for certain athletic events. This idea was certainly interesting but sadly the film never really uses it to it’s benefit. It fails at the basic stage of execution. Throughout the film suffers from abrupt & bad cinematography & editing. Another basic aspect at which the film fails is in creating characters. Aadesh’s friend (Nayan Jadhav), love interest (Sanskruti Balgude) have absolutely nothing to do in the film other than just being there for Aadesh, yet they have fair amount of screen time! What they do for a living? Even that is never known!

The only little positive about ‘Re Raya’ is that it manages to show High Jump, Archery to decently acceptable extent. The kid who plays the high jump athlete is probably a high jump athlete himself. However the ‘archery’ part also seems silly when it tries to create drama out of the competition. And the third sport, running is ruined throughout the film by jerky slow motion. Not even once did I see a running event in it’s normal speed! What’s with this obsession?

Talking about the performances, Bhushan Pradhan has again sank to the bottom where he previously was a couple of years ago, some of his recent performances (especially ‘Amhi Doghi’) under capable directors have been good enough but now he’s unbearable in every dramatic dialogue that he delivers. Among the three kids Hansraj Jagtap is the only ‘actor’ & he does decent work. Abhijeet Chavan gets a few decent scenes where we he uses his usual presence! Sanskruti Balgude’s performance stays irrelevant to the film just like her character’s existence. It’s sad that even after being directed by a talented actor like Milind Shinde, the film doesn’t even manage to work on a performance level of it’s ensemble cast.

This film made me think, the convenient use of post film text slide to wrap up the narrative should be officially banned from our films! I mean how simple it is to just say this, this & that happened. Anyways even without the slide ‘Re Raya’ had no chance of becoming a lesser bad film!

Overall:

Sports film is an extremely connectable film genre. And Marathi audiences can easily associate with such stories, provided they are well made films with a decent story to tell.

A sports film is a very rare genre in Marathi cinema & even more rare is ‘athletics’ in our films. Actor turned director Milind Shinde directorial ‘Re Raya..Kar Dhava’ is that very rare film releasing in theatres from 20^th July. Presented by ‘Radhe Motion Pictures’ & produced by Ajay Sukheja this film stars Bhushan Pradhan, Sanskruti Balgude, Uday Tikekar, Prakash Dhotre, Vivek Chabukswar & Hansraj Jagtap.

This film tells the story of the journey of rural kids who aspire to be athletes. Actor Bhushan Pradhan plays their coach. Director Milind Shinde believes there’s a natural physical strength in kids born in rural areas they just need the right guidance to achieve their dreams. He also believes that the ‘sports’ genre is difficult to deal with but he has made a very realistic sports film.

Milind Shinde who has also been a well-known actor, says while directing the film, the actor within him was distant from him. He thought of the film from a director’s point of view throughout. He didn’t show his actors how to act by doing it himself. He instead let every actor explore their character on their own & hence their performances turned out very natural & organic, believes Shinde.

Aamhi Doghi Marathi Movie Review:

‘Aamhi Doghi’ is based on a story by writer Gauri Deshpande. Not a lengthy novel but a compact 12 page story. However the time frame of the film (& the story) is larger & covers a span of around 10-12 years. The title of the film is a bit misleading as the film is more of an individual’s journey in the crucial years of her life. ‘Savitri’ or ‘Savi’ played by Priya Bapat is that individual & also the narrator of the film. She warns us both at the beginning & at the end of the film that since she’s the narrator she would always be in the foreground by force & in the background lies her step mother ‘Amla’ or ‘Ammi’ played by Mukta Barve. This isn’t a huge issue but I must warn Mukta Barve fans that she won’t have a lot of screen time, though her character is still essentially important to the film.

Equally important is Savi’s father ‘Appa’ played by the mighty effective Kiran Karmarkar. Even the rest of the cast that includes Savi’s friends, colleagues, & her love interest are important to the story in their own little ways. Savi is unlike any female protagonists we’ve seen in Marathi cinema. She represents the independent woman of today’s age & not in a caricature-like way. In a way this is the biographical story of Savi’s life & how she groomed herself to become the independent woman of today’s age. ‘Appa’ is the opposing force in her life & he consciously groomed her to become a lot like himself. But from her teenage years Savi didn’t feel the need to let ‘Appa’ decide for her, the first moment of Savi’s journey towards attaining independence begins here, enters ‘Ammi’ Appa’s newly-wed wife only 7-8 years older than Savi, n exact opposite of Savi in every way. Savi grew up without a mother & adapted herself accordingly. Ammi meets Savi at a point where Savi isn’t searching for a mother. Savi has a best friend already! So how & why does she connect with Ammi? She does, but how & why needs to be seen in the film.

Now the problem with this first half that deals with Savi’s teenage years is that the film doesn’t bother much to create a period in which things are happening. Since the story begins with a flashback, building a period is very essential to capture the realness of the lives of those people. The visual tone of the film too remains bland throughout. The good thing is that the film gives scope to silence! It doesn’t spoon feed the audience by bombarding loud background score telling them what to feel all the time. By the end of the first half we are unconvinced about Mukta Barve’s existence in the film. But later in the second half her character returns to give the defining meaning to the film. A meaning that shapes the whole film & Savi’s conflict in a completely different way! It gives a lot of food for thought to the audiences after they leave the cinema hall.

Priya Bapat as Savi is extraordinary & extremely real. There’s an inherent softness in her that actually would go opposite to the character of Savi, but instead that softness blends in with Savi’s toughness to give a much more believable portrait of a strong independent woman! Mukta Barve would have easily been a more obvious choice to this role but Priya Bapat brings in an x-factor! Mukta Barve too shines in a role that will linger for a long time in our memory even with limited screen time. Bhushan Pradhan for the first time seemed into the skin of his character! He plays ‘Ram’ who tells Savi in their very first meet that Rahul Dravid is his idol in every way! ‘Ram’ (in another way an ideal ‘man’ or ‘husband material’) does represent ‘Rahul Dravid’ himself or should we say vice-versa!

Overall:

‘Aamhi Doghi’ could have been better directed for sure but it still works beautifully. The strength of the original story & Priya Bapat’s lively ‘Savi’ makes ‘Amhi Doghi’ a must watch for all kinds of audiences especially the family audiences!

Ti Ani Itar Marathi Movie Review :

Adapting a play into a film is always tricky! Many a times the story has the potential of a film within it, but very few times the makers manage to explore that potential. Among the many play to film adaptations in Marathi of recent times ‘Lalbaug Parel’ (adapted from Adhantar) & ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’ could be considered to be successful to some extent in exploring this potential. But in the first place these plays had that kind of canvas, which would suit a film. Even a play like ‘Natsamrat’ had that canvas. But ‘Lights Out’ (from which ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is adapted) seems to be a play that is strictly a play and doesn’t really give much scope for its canvas to be expanded for a film.  

Hence it becomes obligatory for ‘Ti Ani Itar’ to be in the same compact ‘play like’ form to keep the soul of the story & its commentary intact. This film is directed by one of the most respected Indian filmmakers Govind Nihalani. Nihalani started out being a cinematographer & most of the times shot his directorials himself alike ‘Ti Ani Itar’. The point is that even after being a cinematographer Govind Nihalani’s films have always been ‘compact’.

The story is simple & takes place in a couple of hours. Anirudh Godbole (Subodh Bhave) & Naina Godbole (Sonali Kulkarni) belong to the upper class & live in a lavish flat. They have two little daughters. They have arranged a small get together for a few close friends (Amruta Subhash, Bhushan Pradhan, Priya Marathe & Avishkar Darwhekar) for celebrating the launch of Naina’s (who is a singer) latest music album. In the midst of that, suddenly they start hearing a girl screaming. Naina & Anirudh reveals that this screaming has been happening for a couple of weeks now!

At this point we as audiences expect an immediate action. Amruta Subhash portrays a responsible journalist, & many a times our expectations are mentioned by her character. But the point this film tries to make can’t be made if there’s an immediate action! This restlessness that we undergo as viewers is the basic aim of this story! Well it might be immensely effective on stage, it still works reasonably well on the screen too. Post interval the film takes a more intense dramatic turn. And surprisingly the acting is not at all theatrical or dramatic! Subodh Bhave in particular gives a well controlled yet intense performance throughout. The whole of second half works purely on two things first the basic strength of the original story & second of course the performances. But overall the film isn’t error free.

So one of the errors of ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is the fact that the original play was on the lines of ‘absurd theatre’, where what we see is not really ‘reality’. It’s a setup to say certain things. Many of what we see can’t be taken literally. It has a different meaning ‘metaphorically’. But in the first half of ‘Ti Ani Itar’ this metaphoric setting of the play disrupts the cinematic sense of the film. There was definitely a scope to ‘show’ certain things!

Secondly throughout first half as well as second, there’s almost no use of light! The whole film almost works one stock light. The film doesn’t acknowledge the fact that natural light can really be used to bring an important visual dimension to the film.

Overall:

Yes ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is basically a play that doesn’t quite justify it’s ‘film’ adaptation, but its one hell of an impactful experience. Those who like morally confusing ‘food for thought’ ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is definitely a must watch as there isn’t any available medium to watch this story on stage.
