]]>A horror comedy is a genre seldom explored in Marathi cinema. Horror itself is a rarely explored genre. So there was certainly a curiosity regarding the film. The main cast were also all quite capable enough. However, the film turns out to be a disappointment as it does not meet expectations at all.
The plot isn’t bad at all. Abhay (Vaibhav Tatwawadi) is your quintessential ‘cool dude’ who spends most of his time cheating others (and hence the title of the film). Mrudala (Pooja Sawant) aka Mimo is a rich girl from Mauritius studying in the college and also happens to be Abhay’s girlfriend. Mimo’s rich family purchases another big bungalow in Mauritius and she called there to celebrate the event. But, as you can expect, the bungalow is haunted. Mimo asks Abhay to send an exorcist from India there. Abhay senses an opportunity here and goes himself to Mauritius disguised as an exorcist. Given his care free attitude he doesn’t believe in ghosts, but that turns out to be a problem here as the ghost is indeed haunted.
The problem here is that in trying to explore the horror comedy genre the film feels like being confused between the two genre. There doesn’t seem to be any proper assimilation between the two different kinds of style. At times you forget that there is any supernatural element in the film. And at other times the romantic genre completely overtakes the film. As a result, the film ends up becoming an odd mix. Neither does it convince you as a horror film and neither as a romantic film.
The budget also doesn’t seem to be a problem. As the film has pretty decent production values for a marathi film. There is a considerable use of CGI as well. But the problem here is that there doesn’t seem to be any uniformity in the aesthetic design of CGI.The various kinds of graphics come across as disparate from each other.
The cast of the film does manage to do its job well, but sadly, that isn’t enough for the film to affect you in any substantial manner.
A rather unconvincing mix of horror and romantic comedy, that leaves you unaffected.

]]>The post Pooja Sawant Interview : Cheater is a lovely horror comedy appeared first on MarathiStars.
]]>Pooja Sawant is one of the most glamorous face of Marathi industry. Since her debut in Kshanbhar Vishranti in 2010, Pooja is seen in various films and dance reality TV shows. An enchanting smile, good dancing skills and a complete diva material Pooja is really excited about her upcoming “Cheater” where she is paired against Vaibhav Tattwawadi. Marathistars.com spoke with Pooja about this film and her role.
Here are the excerpts from this interview.
Can you please tell us about your role in the film Cheater?
In this film I am playing role of a girl called Mimo. That is her pet name and everybody from the family adores her. Basically she is from a rich family of Mauritius, but her grandmother (played by Suhas Joshi) wants her to get good Indian Sanskar and hence sends to Pune for further education. She is a psychology student. In Pune, I meet this conman cheater played by Vaibhav. He falls in love with me and he comes to Mauritius along with me. Hrishikesh Joshi and Asawari Joshi are playing role of my parents. This is a lovely horror comedy. Though this is a comedy film, the element of horror is also very important in this story. It is a completely family oriented film.
In this film, Vaibhav has donned a completely new avatar. What do you think of his character?
Looking cool and confident was the basic requirement for his role, but he was worried about being loud. He used to ask me whether he is being gaudy as he has never done such type of roles. I always told him that you should leave that Coffeewala serious look behind and be happy with this new avatar. He was constantly asking the director about whether he was overacting. However, everybody on the sets used to convince him that he is going on the right track. He is a cheater from Pune so he has to look very overconfident, brash and street-smart. His persona should portray that he is pretty sure that he will never get caught. While shooting Vaibhav explored this character beautifully and as the promos are suggesting, people love his new cool avatar.
Ajay Phansekar is directing after gap of so many years. How was your experience working with him?
Ajay has done such a brilliant films like Ratra Arambh, Encounter, Ramchandra Purushottam Joshi. He has taken a gap of so many years as he was working on the scripts. During shoot breaks, he used to narrate us stories from his research. He traveled at various places to write his scripts and do the research. After so many years, he is coming with this new film. After Cheater he has lined up many projects. This is more like a comeback for him.
You are mostly known for your glamorous roles. What is your though process behind your looks and costumes?
This has to be done according to requirement of the role. I have done a completely deglamourized role for Nilkanth Master because that was the prerequisite of the script. I prefer personally discussing with the stylists and costume designer about my look. I get involved in the process of designing the look as well as selecting the costumes and the makeup. This helps me to know my character very well and also I get to know what I will be wearing for every scene. I pay attention to these details, so I am ready before the film goes on the floor.
You are a fabulous dancer. Have you learnt dancing?
Dance is my god-gift. I have never learnt any classical dance, but I enjoy dancing and I am passionate about it. I love live performances as they give lots of positive energy. However, I make sure that I don’t overdo it. I don’t want to see myself performing in each and every event or the award show. I have to be selective about the events so my performances remain fresh and interesting.
What are your criteria for choosing a film?
Choosing films I don’t have any boundaries. I want to different type of cinema. For the length of the role does not matter, but the importance of that role in the story matters. For Nilkanth Master, I was given an option to select between the two female leads. Lengthwise other character had more scenes, but Indu had less scenes. After reading the script, I decided to do Indu because she is more promising and I could identify myself with that character.
Marathi films are doing really well on the box office. What do you think about it?
This is a golden era for Marathi cinema. I am think I am blessed because I am getting an opportunity to work in this scenario. When the future generation will look back they will take my name as a part of this era. Now we are promoting our films vigorously. We are getting box office collection in crores. This is a great achievement for Marathi film fraternity as well as for Marathi audience. It encourages filmmakers to keep experimenting and make good films.
What is your fitness Mantra?
I love to dance and that keeps me fit. I also do yoga regularly. Other than that I don’t follow any strict regime for my fitness. I eat everything because I love food.

]]>Vaibhav and Pooja’s new release Cheater is all set to hit the theatres on 10th June 2016. The new romantic song from the film has released recently called “Man Maajhe”. The song has been sung by Sonu Nigam and Anandi Joshi. The music has been composed by Abhijeet Narvekar and Akhil Joshi has penned the lyrics.
The song stars Vaibhav and Pooja at exotic locations of Mauritius. The song has been picturized very tenderly and Pooja looks very glamorous in that red shor dress. Vaibhav oozes the charm of a prince for this role and looks very handsome. The pair has an amazing on-screen chemistry. However, though audio-wise song is very romantic and lovey-dovey, it also hints at some terrible things. The video shows Vaibhav (who plays a con-artiste) looking at a very sinister-looking traditionally dressed lady. The lady appears mysteriously and Vaibhav looks scared by her presence.
The film also has a comic touch and the trailer has promised us a very light-hearted comedy drama. The film also stars Hrishikesh Joshi, Asawari Joshi and Suhas Joshi in prominent roles.

]]>Remember that oft silky voice of Sonu Nigam which became a rage few years back. You can now relive that experience in Cheater’s new song “I love you”. Composed by Abhijeet Narvekar, this ultra-romantic track has been picturised on Vaibhav and Pooja- the film’s leading pair.
The song comes as a typical romantic element of the film. Vaibhav is looking very handsome and Pooja looks stunning in short dresses. Her screen presence is very glamorous and she has been emerging as a romantic girl for last few films.
The USP of this song is silken voice of Sonu Nigam and Anandi Joshi. Sonu sings Marathi words very effortlessly; also he can create that romantic mood of the song nicely. The picturisation of the song is very typical but it uses beautiful backdrops of Mauritius.
The film is directed by Ajay Phansekar and it will be releasing on 13th May 2016.

The trailer is neatly cut which tells us that this is a story of a conman who falls in love with a girl. Pooja looks every bit of glamorous and lovely on the screen. Vaibhav looks really good and his mannerism of a conman has been taken very effectively. His disguises and makeup has been done very brilliantly. He also delivers punch lines on the time. The film seems to be giving a full chance to exploit the acting potential of this young actor. The film has been extensively shot at Mauritius. ]]>The post Review: Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 – Only for Swapnil & Mukta fans appeared first on MarathiStars.
]]>It is normal to have high expectations from the sequel of a film as loved as Mumbai Pune Mumbai. But it is almost impossible to recreate the magic of something as great as the 2010 film.
At the same time though, one would, at least, expect a decent amount of satisfaction from Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen. Although the film has enough elements for the target audience and the fans of two lead actors, it falters on the story level.
Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 continues from where the first film ended. Gautam (Swapnil Joshi) and Gauri (Mukta Barve) are deeply in love with each other after spending a day together. Hence, they have decided to get married. Even their respective parents are very pleased with the alliance. Both families share an excellent rapport.
Soon, Gautam and Gauri get engaged. However, in the midst of such positivity, something out of the blue takes place, which threatens to tear the happy couple apart. Will their love succeed in standing tall against such testing times? Or does their love lags behind in something?
There is no doubt that Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 is made by keeping the family audience in mind. The film succeeds in this task till some level. There are enough family moments in the form of lighthearted conversations and scenes where characters are excitedly preparing for an important marriage. Swapnil and Mukta’s pairing is obviously plus factor. Avinash-Vishwajeet’s music too tilts towards the positive side. ‘Saath De Tu Mala’ is the best of the lot.
Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 is by far the first sequel that has a completely different theme from its first film. But this is not a problem here. The problem is the main point that takes the story forward. It is just unconvincing and it also makes one of the two characters appear silly. It is impossible to ignore this point because the entire film is based on it. And its consequences and the culmination (which is anybody’s guess) too are far from satisfactory.
Although the content doesn’t give much of a chance for the DoP to experiment, he has done a fair job. The story does appear more like a daily soap. But, thankfully, the background score doesn’t give that soapy feeling.
It is a pleasure to see Swapnil Joshi and Mukta Barve opposite each other yet again. Both have once again come up with pleasing acts. And like always, they complement each other very positively. This time, they were required to do something very different from the first film.
The film has a host of supporting actors in the form of Savita Prabhune, Asawari joshi, Suhas Joshi, Mangal Kenkre, Vijay Kenkre and Shruti Marathe and they all have provided decent acts.
Mumbai Pune Mumbai 2 is just an average affair, which is not what one expects from the film. However, due to the popularity of the franchise and the leading pair, it will score big at the box office. The presence of Katyar Kaljat Ghusli and the Bollywood biggie Prem Ratan Dhan Payo won’t be able to stop it.
