Quick Viewpoint: Sameer Vidwans has beautifully created a world that is less about the backdrop & more about the humans of the pre independence era. He succeeds in telling us the inspiring story of India’s first female doctor!

What Works? 

• Anandi Gopal craft wise is one of the most superior films made in Marathi that are set in a different era. Yet as said earlier the film’s focus isn’t on the backdrop of that era or the overall British rule over India. Especially the camera work by Akash Agrawal maintains that personal feel in the film.
• The character arc of Gopalrao Joshi (Lalit Prabhakar) is so mindfully created that we understand the minute changes his character goes through because of the situations that he is put into. He is throughout believable as a person who can be both strong and weak in different scenarios.
• Bhagyashree Milind as Anandibai Joshi has given a sublime nuanced performance. Again because just like Gopalrao’s arc her character too is beautifully sketched out making us understand both the revolutionary, confident woman & the child that she was before.
• The film doesn’t over dramatize or underplay the difficulties that Anandibai & Gopalrao had to face to make their dream a reality. Every conflict that is show in the film & the way it is shown is very much believable. Hence we are throughout by their side routing for their dream to come true! And when it does it becomes an emotionally rewarding closure for us.
• Never does the film ever distract itself from it’s main narrative. I mention this because there was clearly scope for the film to indulge itself in the freedom struggle or the other social problems. The film wholly stays personal & specific.

What Fails? 

• Though Lalit Prabhakar shows sparks throughout his performance here & there, overall his performance remains inconsistent. Many a times his limitations to function only at two emotional extremes hampers the nuances the performance demanded at some occasions.

Final Verdict: ‘Anandi Gopal’ is a film that is a must watch for the inspiring tale of a woman who had the guts to work hard for achieving her goal/dream in a completely unfavorable situation & her husband who had the vision for a different society in India.

Lagi Toh Chhagi Review (Marathi Movie):

“Life is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound & fury, signifying nothing.” – William Shakespeare. I must be using this quote in my reviews for the second time! Well because again there’s another Marathi film that suits this statement perfectly. Though it’s not one bit poetic as Shakespeare had made life sound like, ‘Lagi Toh Chhagi’ is an unbearable tale full of sound & fury, signifying nothing! Having said that ‘Lagi Toh Chhagi’ is also an ambitious commercial film when analysed as a ‘Marathi’ film, but they earn no grace points for the intentions.

There’s a pointless argument heard from enthusiasts of south Indian dubbed movies that the use of editing, music & cinematography of those films is very superior to our Marathi films. In most of the cases ‘superior’ stands for over the top use of editing, music & camera angles. This overblown exploitation of the medium was also seen a few Bollywood movies when they were in that ‘south-inspired’ phase a few years ago. ‘Lagi Toh Chhagi’ does exactly that, it almost abuses the idea of non-linear story telling & cutting in between scenes. It’s so out of place & unnecessary that it keeps the audience at a safe distance from the narrative.

The confusion stays forever in the first half. By the time the film starts joining the points we as audiences are least interested in the narrative. Add to that the equally abusive use of background music that is over the top, stereotypical & outright chaotic at times. The film promoted itself on the basis that it had too many characters! These characters just don’t stop being introduced! Sometimes the same character is introduced twice, with a specific loud background sequence. Avenger: Infinity War must have had lesser characters than this!

The genre or story of the film is indescribable to be honest. It wishes to be a crime comedy of errors with an equally serious ‘suspense’ track while there are traits of a cop movie & buddy movie & god knows what else. Strangely most of the performances in the film are decent! The clear standout is the young lady cop from the narcotics department played by actress Nikita Giridhar. But in totality even her performance goes in vain. What kills ‘Lagi Toh Chhagi’ is being insanely ambitious. It’s just too much to focus on for any kind of audiences (class or mass).

Another aspect that contributes to the ‘messy’ part of the film is the use of language & giving different regional backgrounds to different characters. The film could easily be called ‘multi-lingual’. Hindi, English, Punjabi & even Gujarati, there’s room for everything! It desperately wanted to represent the new modern ‘metro’ lingual state of Maharashtra I guess, but again it makes the film even more messy & over the top. In hand of a different writer & director this setting could have resulted into a decent entertaining film, here it just becomes an unbearable mess.

Overall:

If at all you wondered about the title of the film, it stands for ‘chance’. It associated the game of cricket throughout the narrative maybe just to justify the title. If you connect! It’s six, well if you not? You’re out! This film swinged it hard desperately hoping to connect, but it didn’t. However this mad unrestrained approach might benefit the makers some other day with a different film, you never know!

Who doesn’t want to be famous? But fame has a price! For television actors, this is reflected through their immense hardwork. Even though actors are well remunerated for their work, their work is defined by sheer hardwork. Extended work hours is one of the major issues affecting actors. Unending work schedules and hours often become a cause of concern for actors and also prompts them to leave a show. Actors who act in shows aired once or twice in a week aren’t much affected by the long work hours. But it becomes a serious cause of concern for actors starring in daily soaps.

Similar is the case with actress Suruchi Adarkar who plays the lead role in the serial Anjali which goes on air from Monday 22nd May. A lot of portions of the show have not been completed as the per stipulated schedule. Generally, the shooting schedule which starts at 9 am IST in the morning gets over within a span of 12 hours i.e 9 pm IST. However, due to technical issues, the complete bank of episodes is not yet ready. And this has been well understood by Suruchi who has taken the onus of finding a solution for the same. The actress is working tirelessly in order to ensure that audiences do not suffer and also the serial has a sufficient bank of episodes. In the previous week, the actress worked for a non stop jaw dropping stretch of 48 hours! Director Chandrakant Kanase and the other cast members are in awe of Suruchi thanks to her endless efforts and immense dedication.

So immersed is the actress in her role, that all the people present on the set have started calling her by the name of ‘Toofani Anjali’. The actress is sportingly taking this in her stride even as she continues to give her best for the role. One will get to know whether audiences will warm up to Suruchi’s efforts once the serial begins airing daily from Monday to Friday 8 PM IST on Zee Yuva Channel.

Story Outline : 

Zee Yuva has always given a great content rich program for the audience. Now they are coming up with a new serial. The serial is called Anjali and we will see Suruchi Adarkar playing the lead role in this serial.

The serial starts from 22 May at 8 pm Monday to Friday on Zee Yuva. The serial is based on workings of a multi-speciality hospital. Anjali Kshirasagar (Suruchi) joins this hospital as an intern and dreams of becoming a great doctor so she can open up mobile hospitals in the rural area. She is a lovely, intelligent and very soft spoken girl. Along with Anjali- Omkar and Anuradha joins as interns. Dr. Janardan Khanapurkar (Rajan Bhise) is a very famous surgeon, who owns this hospital. His son Yashaswi Khanapurkar has returned from US with higher degree and runs the hospital along with his father. He is very practical by nature and though he is a skilled surgeon, he is more interested in administration of the hospital.

The serial stars Harshad Atkari, Resham Shrivardhankar, Abhishek Gavkar, Bhakti Desai, Uma Sardeshmukh, Yogesh Soman, Meena Sonawane, Umesh Thakur, Sanket Dev, Archana Dani etc.

The concept is developed by Zee Yuva and written by Parag Kulkarni. The serial will be directed by Chandrakant Kanse (who has earlier delivered a hit film Dagdi Chaal). The title song is composed by Rohan Rohan and sung by Rohan Pradhan. The serial is produced by Sanajay Jadhav’s banner Dreaming 24 Seven Entertainment.

A true superstar from Marathi theatre, Prashant Damle has been engaged in various social activities through his “Prashant Damle Fan Fundation”. He is all set to take his social commitment a notch higher with his decision to donate eyes. With his upcoming play, ‘Nakalat Disle Sare’ which deals with the life of blind people, Prashant has decided to take up the cause of eye donation, which according to him, is the need of the hour, with India lagging way behind in this field. He is going to fill up the “eye donation form” in the presence of audience at the time of releasing his new play “Nakalat Disle Sare” on 8^th November.

The play revolves around two blind characters. It tells us about how a person who is blind by birth guide a person who, while being at the peak of his fame, suddenly becomes blind. The story, written and directed by Yogesh Soman, is presented in very light hearted manner. Prashan Damle besides playing main role has also produced this play.

On the occasion of ‘World white cane day’, the Muhurt of this play was also done in a unique way on 15^th October 2013 in the presence of some of the eminent personalities who have overcome the hurdle of blindness and have become successful in their life. On this occasion, Mr. Anand Athalekar, the Honarary Secretary of “National Association of Blinds” (NAB), Mr. Dabholkar, an IBM certified NAB’s faculty, Sampada Palnitkar, NAB’s Centre head, Prashant Naik, the inventor of ATM for blind were present. The Muhurt was done at the hands of Nupur Joshi who is Blind by birth. Nupur is best example of courage and wisdom who stood in life barring the visually challenge. Chief Editor of Zee 24 taas, Mr. Uday Nigudkar was also present at this occasion.

Prashant Damle announced his wish to donate eyes on this occasion. He said, “a small country like ‘Shri Lanka’ is on top in Eye donation and we having population of 120 crore is far away from that rank which is ridiculous” “As an Artist, I would be glad if I could create awareness about eye donation and its importance, therefore, I have decided to donate my eyes” He said on this occasion.
