Vikram Phadnis directorial ‘Smile Please‘ starring the likes of Mukta Barve, Lalit Prabhakar, Prasad Oak, Aditi Govitrikar & others is set to release this Friday! We chatted with the Bollywood fashion designer turned Marathi filmmaker on this occasion regarding the film & beyond!

You have worked in Bollywood for many years. What was the first revelation you had when you entered Marathi film industry? 

Nice question! Yes, I did a mistake. I underestimated the talent of Marathi artists! More than underestimating them I think I didn’t really knew them. But then I became familiar to the power of Marathi talent!

You used to watch Marathi films? 

No, not really. I recently started watching Marathi films after many years! When I was a kid my parents used to take me to watch Marathi plays & I had a fading memory of it. Now during Hrudayantar (his first Marathi film) I started watching other Marathi films to know what is happening! I didn’t even knew

Marathi actors face to the name! I only knew Sachin Pilgaonkar, Sachin Khedekar, Mahesh Manjrekar & Ashwini Bhave!

Do you believe the Marathi audience is different from Hindi audience and so on? Or you think audience is audience and it’s same everywhere! 

Hindi is a universal language in India so everybody watches it. We don’t watch Telugu and Tamil films much unless we are a part of that industry or we are passionate about that cinema! And those people won’t watch Marathi films! That’s why it’s called regional cinema. So the difference is there but there is no problem that it is there! Every state has their regional cinema and Hindi releases everywhere. It is bound to be that way. Having said that sometimes some film rise above this and people watch movies of other regions!

This is your second consecutive film with Mukta Barve. How was the process different than the first time? 

Both of my films are emotional. In both my films the woman is the main protagonist. In the first film she was the narrator, and now in the second film she revolves around the main conflict. It could have gone wrong, we would have falled on our face and people would have said that this is a sequel of Hrudayantar! It could have been risky for her for more and people could have said that he has made the same film again. Because people look at actors later but they will see the teaser/trailer and say that it looks like the first!

But it doesn’t look like that!

Because I am doing a sensitive subject! If I was doing a comedy, horror, action, rom com it would not have! since the genres are similar. I know my weaknesses that I can’t do an out & out and comedy or an action film. And I also know my strengths. Like in chess we know which pawn should be moved in which direction similarly I know how to Mukta in the right direction. If I moved her to the same direction or the wrong direction I would be moving her to the dead end. But Mukta has the versatility in her that she can give two different option in films with similar genres! Also I wanted Mukta to be a part of this journey as this is a tribute to my mother!

You said now that both your films are emotional. Along with that both your films are also concerned with illness, in this case mental illness. 

I would hate to call it a illness! Because I’ve seen it from close quarters. I don’t think it’s a illness, it’s a phase that you go through. I am happy right now. 6 minutes later if I’m sad doesn’t mean I’m ill! I would hate to call it a sickness also! It’s a condition. People who think it’s a sickness or illness, it’s not right. Stability and instability comes in your life like day and night! After the night the day comes! I want to bring this to the forefront that when such condition arise in our lives defeat is not the answer! We shouldn’t loose hope and say to others ‘Chal Pudhe Chal Tu’!

For whatever this film is about there may not be pharmaseutical remedies. You may not be taking a pill to cure yourself. But if your mind and your soul are right are positive and healthy, you can face what the condition of this film is!

Fashion Designer turned filmmaker Vikram Phadnis is back with his second Marathi film ‘Smile Please‘ after the success of Subodh Bhave-Mukta Barve starrer ‘Hrudayantar‘. This time too with he continues his partnership with Marathi’s most loved actress of our time Mukta Barve. And this time around Mukta is being paired along side the young & dashing Lalit Prabhakar. Whereas Prasad Oak is also a part of the star studded cast.

The teaser of the film was recently released. While the film again looks as lavish as Vikram Phadnis’ previous film the teaser doesn’t give away much about the film. Maybe there is a hint that Mukta Barve in this film is suffering from the Alzheimer’s disease! In ‘Hrudayantar’ we saw Vikram Phadnis dealing with subject of cancer & now too it seams the subject might be about another disease!

This film also marks the comeback of super model turned actress Aditi Govitrikar into Marathi cinema. She was long back seen in a few Marathi films mainly Sanjay Jadhav directorial psychological thriller ‘Ringa Ringa’! ‘Smile Please’ truly seems to be one of the most awaited Marathi films of 2019!

Hrudayantar Marathi Movie Review :

Almost five decades ago Indian Cinema got one of its most iconic masterpieces, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s ‘Anand’. Ever since then the whole phenomenon of death in Hindi & beyond, many a times reflected resemblance to the philosophy of ‘Anand’. Most known films in that type include ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’. Though ‘Hrudayantar’ can’t be added to this list, this film is certainly benefitted by one of Anand’s essential traits. That trait doesn’t keep death as a suspense element. It’s almost certain that the concerned character will eventually die. It’s all about the little journey towards death & how one makes the most of it.

‘Hrudayantar’ is based on a family of four; Shekhar (Subodh Bhave), Samaira (Mukta Barve), Nittya (Trushnika Shinde) & Naysha (Nishtha Vaidya). Then there’s a grandmother (Meena Naik) along with Sonali Khare (a marriage counsellor) & Amit Khedekar (a doctor) who are extended family. Shekhar is an hotelier & Samaira works in the field of advertising. Now as the trailer suggests Shekhar & Samaira’s marriage is on the verge of a breakdown. In the middle of that their 10 year old daughter Nittya suffers from blood cancer.

Now the first error in ‘Hrudayantar’ is the way it mixes the two plots especially in the first half. It keeps switching between them without respecting the sensitiveness of one of its plot over the other. In one of the dialogues Samaira says that her priority right now is her child Nittya, the same was expected from the screenplay here. The second half is designed specifically to make you weep. The good thing is it might work for most of the audiences who are habituated to it. But in this critic’s opinion one major logical error makes the connection weaker.

In the first half we see the doctors talking about the treatment & Nittya’s health, even in the second half. But later the audience is taken for granted. The film doesn’t feel the need to explain why is it impossible to hope for the alternative? We never see the parents’ state of mind when they first understand that this is it. Yes in one of the scenes the little girl herself tells that & the parents break down then & there. But again that is pretty much earlier in the timeline. Post that we do see a few positive episodes that generate hope. This film keeps the hope unresolved! Then enters the ‘Anand Trait’ mentioned above.

Technically the film reflects its lavish production value. After all it is directed by a popular fashion designer from Bollywood. This lavishness also includes an interesting cameo by Hrithik Roshan. The few songs are sweet to the ears & do not disrupt the rhythm of the film. Overall Subodh gets more chances to reflect his calibre compared to Mukta. A few days back another Marathi film about one’s battle with death was released; ‘Braveheart’. That film had more power in its story but was technically weak. Comparatively ‘Hrudayantar’ is a better made film, but somewhere it could have had more emotional depth. Having said that to some ‘Hrudayantar’ is just about accurate, emotionally.

One good thing about this film is that it sells the exact same product which it advertises. Hence the audiences who loved the trailer of the film will most likely love the film too. To those who were a little sceptical about the film can still watch the film at least once. Director Vikram Phadnis displays good control over the medium in his debut films. We can definitely expect better films from him in the future in Marathi & maybe in Hindi too!

Overall:

‘Hrudayantar’ is a film that reflects today’s filmmaking. It’s a well polished, heartfelt attempt whose ultimate impact differs from person to person.

The trailer of Mukta Barve, Subodh Bhave starrer & designer turned filmmaker Vikram Phadnis’ debut Marathi film ‘Hrudayantar‘ went viral since yesterday post it’s upload on social media.

We don’t remember the last time we saw a Marathi film that deals with the issue of separation with such maturity & emotional brilliance. The trailer is simply perfect in creating the right image in the audience’s mind about what the film is about.

The concept of arrange marriages is still very relevant in our society, but it doesn’t mean that such marriages are completely tasteless. This film deals with a middle aged couple (Subodh & Mukta) who have two lovely daughters. But suddenly they start realizing that there aren’t reasons for the husband & wife to stay in this marriage as the ‘love’ part seems to be missing.

By the end of the trailer we also see a glimpse of none other than Hrithik Roshan who plays a cameo in the film. Hrudayantar is a film that should be in your must-watch list if you love Marathi films & want them to blossom more & more commercially & content wise.

Mukta Barve will be seen on Vikram Phadnis directed Hrudayantar as Samaira Joshi. She will be playing role of the mother of two kids for the first time. The recent poster shows Mukta along with these two kids pouting. The poster shows the level of comfort and friendship between mother and her kids. The poster has been unveiled on the occasion of Mother’s Day.

Mukta commented, “I have never played a role of a mother before. This role made me realize what motherhood is. Also, it gave me a realization what my mother has done for me. After reaching the pinnacle of success, it is my mother who has still kept my feet firmly on the ground. When my mother saw first cut of this film, she did not anything to me, but she told Vikram that I have become speechless. For me, this comment is everything in the world.”

The film will be releasing on 7 July all over Maharashtra.

Famously known as Bollywood’s ‘Greek God’ Hrithik revealed the release date of this film 9th June 2017 through his official social networking handle. Moreover he also revealed in his twit that he is a part of the film & he is happy to declare its release date.

Director Vikram Phadnis expressed his excitement & also the pressure that he is currently in. He has been waiting for this film for three years & now finally it’s releasing on 9th June. Whereas producer Purvesh Sarnaik says that this film is extremely close to his heart & it deals with Family & relationships.
