Ti Ani Itar Marathi Movie Review :

Adapting a play into a film is always tricky! Many a times the story has the potential of a film within it, but very few times the makers manage to explore that potential. Among the many play to film adaptations in Marathi of recent times ‘Lalbaug Parel’ (adapted from Adhantar) & ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’ could be considered to be successful to some extent in exploring this potential. But in the first place these plays had that kind of canvas, which would suit a film. Even a play like ‘Natsamrat’ had that canvas. But ‘Lights Out’ (from which ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is adapted) seems to be a play that is strictly a play and doesn’t really give much scope for its canvas to be expanded for a film.  

Hence it becomes obligatory for ‘Ti Ani Itar’ to be in the same compact ‘play like’ form to keep the soul of the story & its commentary intact. This film is directed by one of the most respected Indian filmmakers Govind Nihalani. Nihalani started out being a cinematographer & most of the times shot his directorials himself alike ‘Ti Ani Itar’. The point is that even after being a cinematographer Govind Nihalani’s films have always been ‘compact’.

The story is simple & takes place in a couple of hours. Anirudh Godbole (Subodh Bhave) & Naina Godbole (Sonali Kulkarni) belong to the upper class & live in a lavish flat. They have two little daughters. They have arranged a small get together for a few close friends (Amruta Subhash, Bhushan Pradhan, Priya Marathe & Avishkar Darwhekar) for celebrating the launch of Naina’s (who is a singer) latest music album. In the midst of that, suddenly they start hearing a girl screaming. Naina & Anirudh reveals that this screaming has been happening for a couple of weeks now!

At this point we as audiences expect an immediate action. Amruta Subhash portrays a responsible journalist, & many a times our expectations are mentioned by her character. But the point this film tries to make can’t be made if there’s an immediate action! This restlessness that we undergo as viewers is the basic aim of this story! Well it might be immensely effective on stage, it still works reasonably well on the screen too. Post interval the film takes a more intense dramatic turn. And surprisingly the acting is not at all theatrical or dramatic! Subodh Bhave in particular gives a well controlled yet intense performance throughout. The whole of second half works purely on two things first the basic strength of the original story & second of course the performances. But overall the film isn’t error free.

So one of the errors of ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is the fact that the original play was on the lines of ‘absurd theatre’, where what we see is not really ‘reality’. It’s a setup to say certain things. Many of what we see can’t be taken literally. It has a different meaning ‘metaphorically’. But in the first half of ‘Ti Ani Itar’ this metaphoric setting of the play disrupts the cinematic sense of the film. There was definitely a scope to ‘show’ certain things!

Secondly throughout first half as well as second, there’s almost no use of light! The whole film almost works one stock light. The film doesn’t acknowledge the fact that natural light can really be used to bring an important visual dimension to the film.

Overall:

Yes ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is basically a play that doesn’t quite justify it’s ‘film’ adaptation, but its one hell of an impactful experience. Those who like morally confusing ‘food for thought’ ‘Ti Ani Itar’ is definitely a must watch as there isn’t any available medium to watch this story on stage.

Sachin Pilgaonkar has written lyrics for the first time for Govind Nihlani directed “Tee Ani Itar”. After being an actor, director, producer, presenter and music composer, Sachin has donned another cap as a poet. He has taken a pen name “Shafaq” for this new role. The gajhal is in pure Urdu language “Badal Jo Gheer Ke Aye”. The music for this gajhal has been composed by Vashudha Sharma and Aditi Paul has sung this soulful rendition. Sachin has fabulous command over Urud, as we have seen in “Katyar Kakjay Ghusli”

The film also has another song “Atur Mann” written by Mandar Cholkar and sung by Ankita Joshi. The film stars Subodh Bhave and Sonali Kulkarni in the lead roles. Along with these two, the film has talented star cast like Amruta Subhash, Avishkar Darvekar, Bhushan Pradhan, Priya marathe, Suman Patel and Ganesh Yadav. The film is produced by Prakash Tiwari, Puniit Singh, Dayal Nihlani and Dhananjay Singh. The film is based on Manjula Padmanabhan’s English Play “Lights Out”. The story and screenplay has been written by Shanta Gokhale.

The film will be releasing on 21 July all over Maharashtra.

Suspense thriller film 1234 directed by Milind Kavade is slated for release all over Maharashtra on 5th August 2016. The film stars Bhushan Pradhan, Priya Marathe, Sanjay Narvekar, Vijay Patkar, Vijay Kadam, Ganesh Yadav, Yatin Karyekar, Jaywant Wadkar, Pradeep Patwardhan, Teja Deokar, Arun Kadam, Mrinalini Jamble, Vishakha Subedhar, Aniket Kelkar, Anshuman Vichare, Jagannath Nivangune, Kamlesh Sawant, Guru Anand and Pranav Raorane in the key roles.

The film is produced by Kalpesh Patel under the banner of his K. P. Cinevision and Shailesh Pawar under his banner Sheetal Films productions.

Milind Kavade has always directed films which are different from the league and hence it would not be farfetched to claim that the film 1234 will be a step forward for him. The title does not let anyone get a whiff of what exactly is in store for the viewer. “There is no doubt that 1234 will set out to tell a gripping story which is daringly different. I’d say that all the actors have contributed in great measure to enhance the audience interest in the film which has a unique title and out of the box content. I have til date given a lot of importance to experimenting with different subjects. The USP of the film is that besides entertaining the audiences, the film also sets out to drive home a profound message.

Milind Kavade has not only written the subject and the screenplay but also directed the film besides writing the dialogues in tandem with Sagar Wankhede.

“Sunya Sunya Otanche Bol Saare…” is the only duet in the film and it has been sung by Kunal Ganjawala and Anandi Joshi. Lyrisc has been written by Sachin Andhare and the song has been composed by Amitraj. The duet was picturised at the Ramoji Rao Studios in Hyderabad on Bhushan Pradhan and Priya Marathe. Choreography for the film has been done by Bhanu of South. Sentanio Terezio has cranked the camera. Sandeep Kunchikore is the art director, Vaibhav Wagh the Casting Director and Vaishali Deshmukh the costume designer.

Subodh Bhave upped his reputation and popularity by a few notches, courtesy Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. There was no doubt about his acting skills but Subodh’s direction of the film left everyone pleasantly surprised. So, needless to mention, film enthusiasts keep a close watch on what Subodh does these days. After Bho Bho and Bandh Nylon Che, he is ready with another film called Kiran Kulkarni vs. Kiran Kulkarni and the trailer of the romantic comedy film is out.

Kiran Kulkarni Vs Kiran Kulkarni is written and directed by Kanchan Adhikari who has made films like ‘Manini, Don Ghadeecha Daav, Mokala Shwaas’ before. The film certainly seems to have a fun premise. Kiran Kulkarni (Kranti Redkar) plays a con woman who is expert at forging credit cards. She shops and enjoys her life by swiping other’s credit cards. Then the trailer introduces us to another Kiran Kulkarni (Subodh Bhave) – an office going straight forward man whose credit card is apparent being misused by the lady Kiran. Then we are given a glimpse of a murder taking place in a pub in which the lady Kiran is involved. She has used the credit card in the pub through which money is getting used from of our man Kiran’s bank account. The police start investigating our man Kiran as the police thinks he was in the pub as his credit card details are shown as used. The lady Kiran is involved in some fishy matter and a gunman is chasing her. Our office going Kiran finally manages to locate, the con woman Kiran and goes to confront her. And at the same time the gunman reaches there. The two then are shown on the run as the gunman is chasing them. The two Kirans are later shown bonding with each other on the run.

All in all, Kiran Kulkarni vs. Kiran Kulkarni looks like an enjoyable film with a premise that is fresh for Marathi cinema. Both the actors Kranti and Subodh are capable enough to carry the film on their shoulders. So, here’s wishing the film releases in the theatres soon.
