Review:

The title of Sachin Kundalkar’s Happy Journey is misleading, but in a good way. The film actually is a very happy journey; one which forces you to introspect and question yourself while you are filled with delight. It is yet another contemporary Marathi film with an international appeal.

Happy Journey revolves around the 35-year-old Niranjan (Atul Kulkarni) and his younger sister Janaki (Priya Bapat) and their unexpected and life-changing journey. Later on, Alice (Pallavi Subhash), Niranjan’s school friend, also becomes a part of the voyage.

After the initial few minutes, anybody’s obvious guess would be to see the film head into an obvious, particular direction. However, not only are we proved wrong but we are also dished out a huge surprise or a pleasant shock, if we can call it, in terms of the basic plot. The subject is way different form what we have seen in the promos, where the makers have smartly hidden it.

To simply put it, the storyline is unique. This itself is the biggest plus point. But the end result was possible due to Kundalkar’s mature handling of a sensitive subject. As the journey moves ahead, various layers are unveiled, which make you think a lot by just the visual medium. In other words, the film says a lot without saying much. Of course, there are emotional and, on few occasions, tear-jerking moments but they are in no way depressing.

The subject is such that it also has its share of flaws. There are few other questionable moments too, especially in the second half, where the pace also dips a bit. Thankfully, these issues don’t play spoilsport.

DoP Rangarajan Ramabadran has spectacularly captured the beautiful locations of the Konkan region. His work plays a large role in creating the desired effect. Karan Kulkarni composed tracks are soulful and they go perfectly with the situations.

Atul Kulkarni is easily one of the finest artists of the era. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that he delivers yet another outstandingly believable act while playing a complex character. But the scene-stealer is Priya Bapat. You just can’t stop adoring her due to the manner in which she gets her act right. Pallavi Subhash once again shows signs of talent. There is some issue with her Marathi pronunciation but it might be deliberate to go with her Catholic background.

Veteran artist Chitra Palekar returns as an actor after 32 years with this film. Despite having just a couple of scenes, we can say she has made a terrific comeback. Shiv Subramaniam too leaves behind a mark in just a single scene. Suhita Thatte, Madhav Abhyankar and Siddharth Menon play their respective characters perfectly.

Overall:

Happy Journey is an example of a modern tale, which is high on content. Given the end result and the presence of big names, the film will score well at the box office.

Pallavi Subhash always wanted to work with Atul Kulkarni and not just in a film, but as his romantic interest. The kind of cinema Atul generally does, she never thught her dream will come true. Well, thanks to Happy Journey, this wish has been fulfilled for this dimpled actress.

Pallavi said, “Though I had never worked with Atul, we always have been good friends. I have seen his every film. I am like his huge fan. After seeing him in Premachi Gosht as a complete hero, I desired to work with him in such romantic movie. However he does very selected movies and seldom will do similar film. So I never thought he will do a romantic role again. But then Happy Journey happened and my wish was heard by the heavens.”

Recently, Marathi Film industry has been witnessing a new trend of fresh talent and new faces in Music direction. Karan Kulkarni is such a promising music director whose music will be USP for Sachin Kundalkar’s Happy Journey. Shalmali Kholgade, a known playback singer in Hindi will also be singing two songs for this film. The movie will be releases on 19 September 2014 all over Maharashtra.

With a degree from Australian University in Music production, Karan is already in the limelight for his previous Shahid and Peddler nu Anurag Kashyap. Happy Journey will be his first movie in Marathi.

Happy Journey is one of the most awaited movies of this year, and audience is really curious about its music. “Sachin had a clear concept about music on the film, so it was a challenge for me to construct music around those concepts. Ultimately we succeeded in it. Sound engineer Alok Panjani’s distinctive style has taken my music to another level. Debarpita Saha’s background music contribution is one more thing which makes this very special. Shalmali’s fresh voice will make these songs more exciting.

While speaking about this experience Shalmali said, “I had earlier sung for Karan in Peddlers. In Happy Journey, I have sung two completely different songs. “Fresh” is a lively fascinating song and “Akash jhale” is a very sweet lullaby. To make this song more content oriented, I was supposed to sing it while crying. This was a definitely mile-stone experience for me.”

“HAPPY JOURNEY” the much awaited Marathi film is all set for release all across Maharashtra on 19th September 2014. The film is produced by Everest Entertainment led by Sanjay Chhabria, directed by Sachin Kundalkar and has noted Marathi and National Award winning actor Atul Kulkarni and actress Priya Bapat for the first time together on the big screen with Pallavi Subhash and Siddharth Menon.

The music of the film was released in Mumbai on Tuesday 8th July, 2014 in the presence of Amit Trivedi, the well known Music Composer, Musician, Singer and Lyricist.

Music for Happy Journey has been scored by the very young Karan Kulkarni who has assisted Amit Trivedi on films such as ‘Aiyya’, ‘Ishaq Zaade’, ‘Ek Main Aur Ek Tu’, ‘Trishna’ and ‘ English Vinglish’. Karan holds a Bachelors Degree in Music Production/ Sound Design from the Queensland University of Technology, Australia. Richly inundated with notes of the guitar, accordion and echoes of the pad, the music is the vehicular boost to the journey of each of the characters. With a contemporary folk fusion, the lyrics are in the language of the young, layered and mixed and yet retaining an aspect for the soul said Karan Kulkarni.

The very young , vivacious and versatile singer Shalmali Kholgade who has been topping the charts in Bollywood with her super hit songs like ‘Main Pareshaan’ from Ishaqzaaade, ‘Lat Lag Gayi’ from Race2, and ‘Balam Pichkaari’ from YJHD, is now coming with 2 brand new songs in Happy Journey’.

FRESH is a foot tapping fun song in the film which is picturized on Priya Bapat. It’s a combination of rock, pop and jazz, and Shalmali has dimensiolized it with her unique husky tonality of voice. The other song is a soothing lullaby again picturised on Priya Bapat. It’s a soulful & lyrical melody and has a touch of melancholy. Two contrasting genres of the songs proves Shalmali’s versatility and the range and also the control she has on her craft.
