Kaay Re Rascalaa Review –

Whatever issues the recently released ‘Kaay Re Rascalaa’ has, are actually secondary! The primary disbelief that we as audiences have is that this film is produced by Priyanka Chopra through her production banner. After bringing us a film like ‘Ventilator’ we expected if at all Priyanka produces another Marathi film it would at least be somewhere near the quality of Ventilator. Sadly Kaay Re Rascalaa is miles away from being called a decent film.

Comedy is a tricky affair. Yes, Marathi films do have an interesting history of Comedy but they stand strong on the superlatively talented actors like Ashok Saraf, Laxmikant Berde, Dada Kondke & few more! Those were legends & could truly make you forget other problems their films had. However the filmmakers who worked with them were aware about it & quite compactly wove the film around them. That is the essential error in ‘Kaay Re Rascalaa’. The lead hero ‘Raja’ played by Gaurav Ghatnekar appears secondary to the actual conflict of the film. The film could’ve easily been made without the existence of ‘Raja’. The same can be said about the heroine character played by Bhagyashree Mote. The story that arrives almost in the second half is actual about the little kid ‘Guddu’ played convincingly by child artist Nihar Gite.

The first half is a collage unnecessary gimmicks which are designed to convince us that this film is about ‘Raja’ a supposably smart con! Along with ‘Guddu’ the essential characters in the actual story are Nagesh Bhonsle who plays the Chief Minister & Akshar Kothari who plays his son-in-law! ‘Guddu’ gets connected to these men in a genuinely funny way! However the ‘fun’ part that did exist in the actual idea is nowhere translated in the actual film.

Among the rest of the cast Supriya Pathare, Nikhil Ratnaparkhi & the rest are there to make this film a Priyadarshan style ‘comedy of errors’ but instead it goes on to become a ‘comedy with tonnes of errors’. Nikhil Ratnaparkhi does manage to pull out a few laughs from us, but they aren’t enough! Supriya Pathare plays a south Indian character accompanied by a new actor who portrays ‘Muthu’ a wannabe criminal who is a huge fan of ‘Rajnikant’. Trust me, it’s a real test of patience to tolerate the nonsense these characters initiate in the already messy scheme of things.

Nihar Gite & to some extent Akshar Kothari’s character interest us. Had this film focused on these two completely & the CM played by Nagesh Bhonsle the result might have been slightly better. However later the way the director dealt with Guddu’s story also tested our patience. We keep wishing this whole pointless exercise should end once for all, but keeps on going & going on! The end to this truly unbelievable & is extremely to the character of Guddu! But anyways at this point we weren’t really concerned for Guddu!

The first half of this film was shot at sets that remind us of the 90s Bollywood in a really enexciting way! The second half is set in a five star hotel of sorts but there too the film doesn’t get anything substantial in terms of technical aspects. It really is difficult to believe that ‘Kaay Re Rascalaa’ did excite us when the first time we heard about it & also Priaynka’s name that was attached to it.

Overall: If you wish to watch a comedy where there are many characters & the whole idea of ‘comedy of errors’ I suggest you keep switching T.V. channels. You can easily find at least 3-4 films that are definitely worth a re-watch compared to watching ‘Kaay Re Rasacalaa’ in theatres.

Nihar Gite is a cute kid whose face has become so dear to us! He has been seen in many T.V. ads & has performed in different T.V. shows. He was also seen in Bollywood film ‘Ek Villain’. Nihar is now making his Marathi film debut in the upcoming Family entertainer Priyanka Chopra produced ‘Kaay Re Rascalaa’. We chatted with Nihar on this occasion.

First tell us in which std. are you studying?

I am now in 5^th Std.

This is your first Marathi film. Tell us do you watch Marathi films? Do you like them?

Yes I do watch Marathi films & I like them too. Makarand Anaspure is my favourite actor. I Love watching his films. ‘Gadhvacha Lagna’ is one of my favourite films.

You’ve danced so beautifully in ‘Yaari’ song from this film. Do you like to dance? Do you dance in your school events?

Yes I love to dance. I participate in dance competitions in my school.

Is there any particular form of dance that you love?

Yes. I do enjoy ‘Crumping Style’. It’s my favourite.

How recognized your talent of acting & performing first? Papa or Mummy?

First it was my Papa. But my Mumma too loves my performances.

Since you are in T.V. ads & shows, do people recognize you when you’re out? And how do you deal with them?

Yes they do recognize me most of the times. But it’s better if they didn’t! They call out my name ‘Nihar’ sometimes.

Do you want to become an actor when you grow up? Or do you have other plans?

As of now I want to become a good person when I grow up. What work I’ll do after being a grown up is better left for tomorrow. Right now I love to study!

Which is your favourite subject in school?

My favourite subjects are English & Maths!

Finally, tell us about ‘Kaay Re Rascalaa’. What will the audiences love about it?

Whoever are hearing & watching, reading about the film should watch the film on 14^th July. I am sure they’ll love it. My character is called ‘Guddu’ in this film. It’s a family entertainer. All little kids will also love ‘Kaay Re Rascalaa’. The film will make you laugh throughout & when you come out of the theatre you’ll still have a smile on your face.

Story Outline :

The film is based on the popular Bengali novel Sajano Bagan by Manoj Mitra. The story starts in the pre-independence era in a Konkan village where an elderly farmer Narba (Dilip Prabhavalkar) owns a precious piece of land (wadi). Fascinated by the wadi, the village Zamindar (Manoj Joshi) is desperate to lay his hands on it by hook or crook. But circumstances ensure that the Zamindar doesn’t get the land and he dies out of disappointment. Years later, his son (Manoj Joshi) tries fulfilling his late father’s wish of owning Narbachi Wadi.

Review :

When a respected veteran like Basu Chatterjee gets involved in a light-hearted film, you surely expect a good amount of satisfaction. Aditya Ajay Sarpotdar’s Narbachi Wadi lives up to that expectancy through its simple and amusingly funny tale that strikes many a chords. It once again reminds us that simplicity alone can provide pots of entertainment.

Although Mitra has written an interesting tale, the onus here is more on the situations and dialogues since it is a celluloid version. This responsibility is very well handled by Guru Thakur. The film is loaded with amusing situations and lines. As mentioned before, it’s the simplicity in the narration that takes the cake. However, in the latter part of the second half, the film does make you a bit impatient. But you would hardly think of this instance after witnessing the brilliantly conceived climax.

Apart from the above-mentioned point, other questionable aspects include the story of Narba’s grandson and the sub-plot about his love interest being a lookalike of an actress. But these points don’t appear too big due to the various plusses.

The film wouldn’t have been a pleasing experience without Rahul Jadhav’s artistic camerawork. He lives up to his name by making Konkan look more beautiful. As music doesn’t play a big role, the makers have used on few non-lip-sync tracks, which are soulful compositions by Mangesh Dhakde. The background score too adds to the effect.

The film is blessed by Dilip Prabhvalkar’s outstanding act, as expected from a respected name. You just can’t help but feel amused every time he appears. Manoj Joshi does full justice to his villainous character. Despite the presence of these two performers, Nikhil Ratnaparkhi succeeds in impressing yet again. Vikas Kadam suits the character of Narba’s grandson. Kishori Shahane, Jyoti Malde and the actor in the role of a thief provide decent support.  Bhau kadam is hilarious in a cameo.

Overall :

Narbachi Wadi deserves to be seen for its honest narration and Prabhavalkar’s bravura act. The film requires some rapid word of mouth to succeed at the box office.

Note :

Note: Sajano Bagan was also adapted in a Hindi film in 1992 named Isi Ka Naam Zindagi. It starred Pran, Shakti Kapoor, Aamir Khan and Farha. Unlike Narbachi Wadi, its Hindi adaptation was a dud.
