८० च्या दशकातील मुंबईतील गॅंगवॉर आणि ड्रग्स माफिया यांच्या भोवती सत्य घटनेवर आधारित वेब सिरीज म्हणजे एक थी बेगम..
क्राईम सस्पेन्स थ्रिलर या सदरात मोडणारी ही सिरीज मुळे मुंबई ते दुबई पर्यंत सगळ्यांचे धाबे दणाणून सोडणाऱ्या एका स्त्री ची गोष्ट आहे, जिचा नवऱ्याला नाहक मारलं जातं आणि ती सगळ्यांचा सूड घेते..

हसून हसून पोट दुखायला लावणारी कॉमेडी म्हणजे Zee5 वरील काळे धंदे..ही विकी या तरूण छायाचित्रकारची गोष्ट आहे.. वेगवेगळ्या अप्रत्याशित परिस्थितीमुळे त्याचे जीवन कसे बदलते याबद्दल ही कहाणी फिरत आहे. गोष्टी व्यवस्थित लावण्याच्या बेताने तो आणखी गडबडीत अडकतो. निव्वळ करमणूक म्हणून
महेश मांजरेकर, संस्कृति बालगुडे आणि शुभंकर तावडे मुख्य भूमिका असलेला ही वेब सिरीज बघायला हरकत नाही..

४. पांडू–

कदाचित ही सिराज पाहून तरी मुंबई पोलिसांच्या परिस्थिती आपल्याला कल्पना येईल.. निदान ह्या लॉकडाऊन मध्ये तरी.. मुंबई शहरातील एका पोलिसांच्या रोजच्या जीवनात आपल्याला घेऊन जाईल. हा नर्म विनोद आहे..पोलीस हा पण एक माणूसच असतो, पोलिसांच्या मानवी बाजूचा शोध म्हणजे पांडू.. पांडु भ्रष्ट नाही, किंवा तो एक माचो नायकही नाही, त्याला शक्य तितक्या चांगल्या मार्गाने आपल्या मुलाचे संगोपन करायचे आहे.

५. ..आणि काय हवं–

प्रिया बापट आणि उमेश कामत या जोडगोळीची ‘..आणि काय हवं’ म्हणजे एक गोड गुलाबी कथा आहे जी तुम्हाला प्रेमात पाडते, पुन्हा पुन्हा प्रेम करायला लावते आणि ओठांवर हसू खुलवते.. पुण्यात राहणाऱ्या विवाहित मध्यमवर्गीय जोडप्याच्या जीवनातील प्रेमकथेचे गोड गुलाबी क्षण या सिरीज मधून आपल्याला पहायला मिळतात. नवरा बायको म्हणून असणारी भावनिक गुंतागुंत,एकमेकांना समजून घेणं हे या सगळ्या वर भाष्य करणारी ही सिरीज एकदा नक्की बघायला हवी..

Viewpoint: Sujay Dahake’s ‘Kesari’ stands out strong & bold among the crowd of sports dramas being made everywhere in India. More than the plot of the film it’s the visual experience that the film gives matters here which in turn reflects into our emotional experience throughout the film.

What Works? 

• 5 Minutes into the film and you know you are in for a rare visual treat coming from a Marathi film. A wider aspect ratio has been used for the film which makes the visuals come out of the frame without any 3D effect. The way the camera caresses the protagonist preparing for the ‘Kusti’ shows how the beauty of a human body should be captured on the celluloid (or a digital celluloid). The lush green locales of the village in which the film is set, are actually contrasting in a film about ‘Kusti’. Probably indicating that it’s not really about ‘Kusti’!
• The lead actor of the film, Virat Madke is a real find. He fits the part perfectly in every way and keeps us backing him throughout the journey of the film.
• Every important character in the film has clear established traits that makes them feel real even when they don’t have any conventional tracks of their own and are in the story just to facilitate the protagonist.
• The dialogue writing especially in the first half, is extremely effective. It strikes the right balance of authenticity and a tad bit of filmyness. The dialogues are more effective because they are not thrown at us all the time, they come in at specific dramatic situations which take the film forward.
• There’s a scene in the film when our protagonist decides to enter a traditional “Kusti Taalim Akhada” to be trained & groomed under a master. The master played by Jaywant Wadkar understanding the economic situation of the protagonist introduces his “Akhada” in a way that is not insulting to the hero but also opens his eyes (and ours), shows him the reality that “Kusti” today is not a sport for the poor, it’s for the privileged ones. Countless films have come about “Kusti” in recent times, every other film probably missed this reflection of reality!

What Fails? 

• Almost until the end of second half we don’t really see actual “Kusti” ploys being practiced by our protagonist. That is not necessarily a problem up until then as the film addresses that and the protagonist himself is frustrated about it. But by the end Mahesh Manjrekar’s character (Protagonist’s Guru) says that throughout he wasn’t preparing our hero for the Kusti match alone but for life itself, that definitely doesn’t coincide with the overall sensibilities of the film & it clearly feels melodramatic. Adding to that melodrama there’s a twist added to the climax of the film that also feels very unnecessary.

Final Verdict: ‘Kesari’ is a must have theater experience! “Kusti” is a inherent part of our culture and yet there are hardly any decent films made about it in Marathi. ‘Kesari’ changes that totally and through the use of modern cinematic tools & sensibilities!

Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star is Mumbai’s beloved film festival that showcases the best of Indian and foreign films to the passionate film lovers of Mumbai! The festival is now in it’s 21st year! And like every year they are again screening Marathi films under their various sections!

in India Story section three Marathi films are being showcased. ‘Chivati’ directed by Rajkumar Tangade is about generations of a closely-knit, humorous community of sugarcane labourers who have been migrating yearly in search of work. ‘Y’ directed by Dr. Ajit Wadikar and starring popular actress Mukta Barve, is a collage of four different, interconnected stories that address sex-selective abortion and female foeticide. And the third film in this section being ‘A Thing of Magic’ directed by Nithin Anil which is about a struggling harmonium player, who aspires to join a local drama troupe.

In the ‘Marathi Talkies’ section three Marathi films are to be featured. ‘Dithi’, the much awaited multi-starrer film about the ‘Warkari’ sect directed by Sumitra Bhave stars the likes of Kishor Kadam, Dr. Mohan Agashe, Amruta Subhash, Dilip Prabhavalkar, Girish Kulkarni, Anjali Patil, Shashank Shende & others. The section also features ‘Bhonga’ by the national award winning director Shivaji Lotan Patil. Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Panghrun’ which is a period drama film about a widow starring Manjrekar’s daughter Sai Manjrekar will also be a part of the ‘Marathi Talkies’ section in the festival!

‘About Love’ is another Marathi film that is part of MAMI this year! A documentary film directed by Archana Phadke about the three generations of her family inside their ancestral home – the 102-year-old Phadke Building in downtown Mumbai. Mining their daily routines and rituals, ‘About Love’ deconstructs the dynamics of one eccentric household, studies its gender dynamics and brings unexpected revelations for a daughter rediscovering her family from behind the lens.

Actor Sagar Deshmukh known for Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Bhaai – Vyakti Ki Valli’ and Hindi film ‘Hunterr’ has joined the cast of Mohit Takalkar’s ‘Medium Spicy’. The film produced by Vidhi Kasliwal of Landmarc Films also stars Sai Tamhankar, Lalit Prabhakar and Parna Pethe.

This is the fourth film that Sagar is doing with Sai Tamhankar after Hunterrr, YZ and Girlfriend. Confirmed Producer Vidhi, “Yes, Sagar is part of the Medium Spicy ensemble and we are so happy to have him on board. Medium Spicy has a mélange of many interesting characters and Sagar’s character is an integral part of the story.”

After playing writer P L Deshpande in Manjrekar’s film, Sagar is currently seen playing the titular role of Babasaheb Ambedkar in a TV series based on Dr. Ambedkar’s life. Medium Spicy is touted to be an urban tale of relationships and the shooting of the film is almost complete. While Mohit Takalkar is known for his award-winning works in theatre, Vidhi Kasliwal is known for producing commercial films with strong content. The coming together of these two surely makes Medium Spicy one of the films to look forward to.
