The National Award Winning and critically acclaimed movie ‘Fandry‘ will premiere on ‘Zee Marathi’ on 29th June 2014. Going beyond the gamut of vanilla promotions, Zee Marathi has endeavored to make a difference through Fandry. The campaign woven around the concept ‘Jaaniv Zhali, Badal Havaa’ aims at bringing about change in society and making a difference in the lives of children. The channel has tied up with 10 NGOs that work in the area of children development and protection and will raise funds for these NGOs through the movie. This will be done through special break content that has been created for the movie. The channel has roped in some of the most popular Marathi actors to pledge their support for this cause and thereby create awareness and raise funds towards the cause of these NGOs. Some of the celebrities who will be part of this campaign include Nana Patekar, Sonali Kulkarni, Urmila Matondkar, Sachin Khedekar, Makarand Deshpande, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Atul Kulkarni, Amol Gupte along with vereteran Artists Vikram Gokhale and Dilip Prabhavalkar. Story Outline :

In Akolner, a small village in the interiors of Maharashtra, lives an adolescent Jambawant Kachru Mane aka Jabya (Somnath Avghade), who constantly faces wrath of his father (Kishore Kadam) for his mischievous ways.

Review :

From the promotional material, Nagraj Manjule’s directorial debut Fandry appeared similar to Shala and Timepass due to the adolescent love angle. Although that is very much its subject, it is far different from these two films since it mainly deals with the issue of caste discrimination. But instead of being a direct attack on casteism, it follows an indirect hard-hitting route full of artistic brilliance. Such a description, however, also means that the film suits more for the lovers of art-house or festival cinema.
As expected from a contemporary village flick, Fandry slowly but steadily gets the audience involved into the world of Jabya through a series of appealing moments born out of his daily routine. The protagonist’s restrained yet strong desires mostly portrayed through his innocent conversations with his best friend Piraji (Suraj Pawar) instantly make you sympathetic towards him.

It is remarkable how in his very first film Manjule has presented the issue of casteism and exploitation of the supposed lower castes by simply using the visual medium. This ensures you are glued to the screen despite the film not having a conventional storyline. Along with the fixing of Jabya’s sister’s wedding, jatra scene and the long climax, the very last second deserves special mention for its symbolism and the thrilling 3D-like effect it generates (watch the film to know more about this). It also brings back memories of Shyam Benagal’s Ankur.

The only negative aspect is that such an arty film should have been told in a lesser duration. They could have shortened few scenes. And needless to say, the film won’t appeal to those who prefer conventional entertainment.

Vikram Amlady’s beautifully creative camerawork makes the film what it is. Aloknanda Dasgupta’s background score brilliantly complements various situations. Using loud drum sounds during thrilling moments works very well. There are no songs but the one recited by the character of Piraji a couple of times is super pleasing.

Manjule has churned out brilliant performances from his cast although most of them are non-actors. Somnath Avghade deserves immense praise for his excellent portrayal of Jabya in his first film. At times he had the difficult task of portraying emotions through expressions but he does that exceedingly well. The reliable Kishore Kadam scores brownie points this time too with a thoroughly dedicated act.

Suraj Pawar too is excellent as Piraji. Manjule himself plays the role of Charkhya perfectly. It is surprising to see Rajeshwari Kharat playing just a cameo and getting hardly any chance to speak. To be fair to her, she does well of whatever opportunity she gets. The film is also blessed with a number of good supporting acts.

Overall :

Fandry is an artistically crafted hard-hitting drama that deserves a watch if you prefer unconventional, realistic cinema. The film’s triumph at various international film festivals has ensured a positive word-of-mouth, which is reflected in the good opening it has received. If the word continues to spread, it will be a winner at the box office.

फँड्री- सामाजिक विषमतेतून बाहेर पडण्याची धडपड –

फँड्री गोष्ट आहे एका सामाजिक विषमतेची ज्यात आपला समाज अजूनही गुरफटला आहे आणि त्यातून बाहेर येणाऱ्याला परत परत कसं त्यातच ढकललं जातं याची. दिग्दर्शक नागराज मंजुळे यांचा फँड्री, ही सामाजिक तेढ एका शोडशवर्षीय मुलाच्या प्रेमाच्या आकर्षणातून मांडण्याचा प्रयत्न करतो आणि एकंदरीत त्यावर विचार करण्यास नक्कीच भाग पाडतो.

जब्या (सोमनाथ अवघडे) हा अकोळनेर या एका लहानश्या गावातील एका मागास जातीतील अत्यंत गरीब कुटुंबामधला शोडशवर्षीय मुलगा, ज्याला त्याच्याच शाळेमधील शालू (राजेश्वरी खरात) ही एका वरच्या जातीतील आणि श्रीमंत घरातील मुलगी आवडते. वरकरणी ह्या एका ओळीत संपणाऱ्या कथेत दिग्दर्शकाने खूप साऱ्या बाजू मांडण्याचा प्रयत्न केला आहे. जब्या अशा एका जमातीमधे जन्माला आला आहे की ज्यांना गावातील ‘फँड्री’ म्हणजेच डुक्करे पकडण्यासारखे खालचे काम करावे लागते जे त्याला स्वतःला मान्य नाही. जब्याचे वडील कचरू (किशोर कदम) हा एक उतारवयाकडे झुकणारा गरीब माणूस, ज्याला आपल्या मुलाला शाळा सोडून काम करायला लावणं आणि तसच पारंपारिक डुक्करे पकडण्यासाठी त्याच्या इच्छेविरुद्ध ओढणं आणि मग यातूनच जब्याचा त्याच्या वडिलांबरोबर आणि समाजसंस्थेविरुद्धचा संघर्ष म्हणजेच फँड्री!

जब्याची तरल प्रेमकहाणी उभी करत असतानाच त्याचं एका गरीब कुटुंबात जन्माला आल्याने त्याची होणारी ससेहोलपट, ऐन शिकण्यासवरण्याच्या काळात वडिलांसोबात कष्ट करून कुटुंबाला करावी लागणारी मेहनत, हलक्या प्रतीची कामे शाळेतल्या मुलांसमोर आणि तसेच आपल्या आवडत्या मुलीसमोर करायला लागू नयेत म्हणून करायला लागणारी धडपड अशी बरीचशी अंगे समोर आणण्यात दिग्दर्शक यशस्वी झालाय. जब्याची कौटुंबिक आणि सामाजिक फरफट बऱ्याचदा काळीज चिरून जाते. साध्या साध्या आणि दैनंदिन गोष्टीत दाखवून दिला जाणारा जातीय कमीपणा आपल्यातल्या ‘स्वयम’ला सुद्धा विचार करायला लावतो. जब्याचं जाणतं अजाणतं वय, मग त्यातून त्याचा समाजव्यवस्थेविरुद्ध होणारा नकळत विरोध, पण तोच समाज त्या विरोधाला झुगारून त्याला परत परत त्यातच ढकलणाऱ्या या समाजाबद्दल राग आल्यावाचून राहत नाही. नागराज मंजुळे ही सामाजिक तेढ दाखवण्यात जेवढा यशस्वी झालाय तेवढाच यशस्वी तो एका लहानश्या खेड्यातलं दैनंदिन जीवन दाखवण्यात सुद्धा तितकाच यशस्वी झालाय. गावातली समाजव्यवस्था, राहणीमान, बोली या गोष्टी तर उत्तम साधल्या आहेतच परंतु गावात आजकाल शौचालय नसून इंटरनेट कनेक्शन वाले मोबाईल फोन, फेसबुक, आयपीएल सारख्या लेटेस्ट गोष्टींचं आकर्षण एवढा पुढारलेपणा असूनही काहीशी काळ्या जादूची छटा वैगेरे त्याने डार्क ह्युमर प्रकारात दाखवून दिल जीत लिया है.

एवढ्या सगळ्या जमेच्या बाजू असताना काही तांत्रिक बाबीत चित्रपट काहीसा मागे पडल्यासारखा वाटतो. चित्रपटाची कथा, संवाद, पार्श्वसंगीत, कलाकारांच्या भूमिका उत्तमच आहेत परंतु चित्रपटाला एक कंटेम्पररी लुक देण्यासाठी बऱ्याच ठिकाणी अर्धवट सोडून दिलेले सीन्स थोडे खटकतात. ते वगळता सर्व कलाकार भूमिका करत नसून ती भूमिका स्वत: जगत असल्याचा फिल म्हणजे  जबरदस्तच. किशोर कदम बेस्टच, कायम प्रमाणे. त्यांचा ‘कचरू’ किंवा ‘कचर्या’ जमून आलाय. जब्याचा खास मैतर ‘पिर्या’ म्हणजेच सुरज पवार याची जब्याला साथ फक्त भूमिकेतच नाही तर अॅक्टिंगमध्येपण समर्थ साथ म्हणता येईल. राजेश्वरी खरातची ‘शालू’ खरच प्रेमात पडण्यासारखी. बाकी गावकरी एकसे एक इरसाल आणि नमुने म्हणजेच नागराजच्या परफेक्ट निवडीची पावती. या सगळ्यांमध्ये ‘छा’ गया म्हणजे सोमनाथ अवघडेचा जब्या. सोमनाथने जब्या सिम्पली परफेक्ट आपल्यासमोर उभा केला आहे.

एकंदरीत फँड्री वेगळ्या धाटणीचा, सामाजिक संस्थेवर बोट ठेवणारा आणि तितकंच प्रभावीपणे विचार करायला लावणारा सिनेमा आहे. चित्रपटातले सर्वात उत्तम आणि आणि प्रभावी सीन्स म्हणजे जब्या आणि त्याची बहीण पकडलेले डुक्कर घेऊन जात असताना बॅकग्राउंडला असणारी शाळेच्या भिंतीवर काढलेली बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर, सावित्रीबाई फुले, शाहू महाराज, जोतिबा फुले आणि संत गाडगेबाबा यांची चित्रे. या महान लोकांच्या सामाजिक चळवळी कशा आपण धुळीत मिळवल्यात याची जाणीव करून देणारी फ्रेम. हा सीन म्हणजे सिंपली अमेझिंग! आणि लास्ट बट नॉट लिस्ट म्हणतात तसंच सिनेमाचा शेवटचा सीन ज्याला तुम्ही घेऊन बाहेर पडता. इस दो सीन्स के लिये बाकी सब गलतियाँ माफ! या सीन्स बद्दल एकच शब्द- चपखल.

समाजव्यवस्थेतील जातव्यवस्थेचं दाहक वास्तव प्रेमकथेच्या रूपातून नागराज मंजुळे याने ‘फॅंड्री’ मध्ये मांडलंय. दोन विभिन्न जातीतील जब्या आणि शालूची ही कथा. शालूचं प्रेम मिळवण्यासाठी, आपल्या भावना तिच्यापर्यंत पोचवण्यासाठी जब्याची चाललेली आंतरिक धडपड अजय गोगावलेने आपल्या शब्दांतून अचूकपणे मांडली आहे. “ तुझ्या पिरतीचा हा इंचू मला चावला” असे या गाण्याचे शब्द आहेत. दोनेक वर्षांच्या मोठ्या विश्रांतीनंतर अजय-अतुल मराठी श्रोत्यांसाठी हे एक सरप्राईज घेऊन येत आहेत. लोककलेचा बाजूअसलेल्या या गाण्यात ढोल, ताशा, संबळ, हलगी अशा विविध वाद्यांचा वापर अजय – अतुल यांनी मोठ्या खुबीने केलाय. या वाद्यांच्या सोबतीला अजयचा आर्त सूर आणि तेवढेच सुरेख शब्द यामुळे हे गाणं श्रोत्यांच्या मनाचा ठाव घेणारं झालं आहे. यु ट्युबवर अपलोड केलेलं हे गाणं सध्या चाहत्यांमध्ये तुफान लोकप्रिय ठरत आहे. या गाण्याला अनेक हिट्स, लाईक्स मिळत आहेत शिवाय फेसबुक, टि्वटर सारख्या सोशल नेटवर्क साईट्स आणि व्हॉट्स अॅप सारख्या लोकप्रिय अॅप्सच्या माध्यमातून हे गाणं मोठ्या प्रमाणावर शेअरही केल्या जात आहे.

विविध आंतरराष्ट्रीय चित्रपट महोत्सवांत कौतुकाचा वर्षाव मिळालेल्या ‘फॅंड्री’ ला नुकताच पार पडलेल्या पुणे आंतरराष्ट्रीय चित्रपट महोत्सवात सर्वोत्कृट मराठी चित्रपटासह इतर मानाचे चार पुरस्कार मिळाले. कथा, पटकथा, अभिनय, दिग्दर्शन अशा सर्वच बाजूने भक्कम असलेल्या ‘फॅंड्री’ ला लाभलेली अजय-अतुल या राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार विजेत्या संगीतकाराच्या भक्कम योगदानाची जोड यामुळे ‘फॅंड्री’ बद्दल रसिकांच्या मनात चित्रपटाबद्दल कमालीचं औत्सुक्य आहे. सोमनाथ अवघडे, सूरज पवार, राजेश्वरी खरात आणि किशोर कदम यांच्या दमदार अभिनयाने सजलेला ‘फॅंड्री’ हा चित्रपट  येत्या १४ फेब्रुवारीला संपूर्ण महाराष्ट्रात प्रदर्शित होईल.
