Review:

Marathi cinema is going through an impressive period since last five years or so. Some bold, contemporary subjects are been tried and they are well-received too, even by non-Marathi audience. This year has also seen its share of cinematic gems.

Unfortunately, there has also been a regular dose of trashy Marathi films in 2015. Out of these, some even make you wonder as to how it attracted financers in the first place. Director Nishant Devidas Sapkale’s Dhinchak Enterprise is yet another film that adds to this dangerous trend.

The film is about Vishal Patil (Bhushan Pradhan), who is a salesman in a firm producing slimming tablets. His career gets a boost after he gets the Employee of the Month Award. When a fresh MBA graduate Meera (Manava Naik) joins his team, he instantly falls for her. However, Vishal’s perfect world starts crumbling suddenly. This compels him to start his own firm named Dhinchak Enterprise.

The only positive point one can find in Dhinchak Enterprise is few funny sequences in the first half. Despite the not-so-intelligent content, this part keeps you mildly entertained and generates some curiosity for the second half. But everything goes haywire post-interval.

The title indicates that the story is about the rise of a company named Dhinchak Enterprise. But the makers have given absolutely no footage to its formation and success. This is not a minor issue because this forms the crux of the main plot. However, the remaining part makes this error appear minor as you are dished out a series of silly incidents until you no longer care for the final outcome.

A (so-called) major twist in the second half is perceived by one of the main characters as an immoral and criminal activity. However, the character himself has made a fortune by unethical and illegal means. So, what right does he have to point fingers at others? More importantly, why should the audience feel for such a character?

Needless to say, the film provides a number of unintentionally hilarious moments. The biggest one is the reaction of few news reporters during a press conference.

The love track becomes a hindrance later on. It also brings with it few unwanted songs. There is also a disco track about tequila featuring the heads of a social organization. It goes against the characters and the film. The peppy and quirky background score triggers humor, mostly in the first half. The camerawork is fine.

Bhushan Pradhan displays his talent and charm yet again. However, he should seriously ponder over his choice of films. Manava Naik isn’t bad. Khursheed Lawyer, making his Marathi film debut, is irritating because of his forced bad Marathi pronunciation. His character’s over-Gujarati-ness at the start is embarrassing. But he shouldn’t be blamed as it is obvious that he was suggested to act this way.

Overall:

There is nothing dhinchak in Dhinchak Enterprise. The film suffers from a poor content. It will go unnoticed at the box office.

She is a terrific combination of a talented actress and a great director. Daughter of an actress and a writer, Manava Naik has always been choosy about her roles and given something more to her every role. After doing many shows on National Television, Manava acted in several Marathi films like Shahanpan Dega Deva, Fakta Ladh Mhana, Kaksparsh, No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey, to name a few. A film school graduate from US, she made her debut as a director with Por Bazaar, a powerful film about child-trafficking.

Her latest film as an actress “Dhinchak Enterprise” is releasing on 21 August. Marathistars.com spoke with Manava about her role in this film. Manava also speaks how the changes in Marathi cinema will affect the industry in the future.

Tell us more about your role and the film Dhinchak Enterprise?

Dhinchak is about today’s youth who wants to make more money in less time. It is not like they don’t want to do hard work, but they prefer shortcuts. In the film you will see two salesman struggling with their corporate life, however a turning point comes and they get sudden opportunity to earn vast amount of  money in short time. Whenever you get lot of money there is always a duality and dilemma about good and bad. So eventually the story is about their conscience and decision between these two.

The girl in Dhinchak is more career-oriented than what I am in real life. I am actually a laid back type of a person. She is a very sweet simple girl next door type. I think every girl of today’s generation can can identify with such characters as rat-race and competitive corporate life has become part of our lives.

You are being paired with Bhushan for the first time. How was the experience of working with him?

Ans: Bhushan and I were not very good friends earlier but we had a bunch of common friends. We started off as just acquaintances but while working for this film we became really good friends. He is a very co-operative and warm co actor. On film sets you are spending so much of a time such friendly relationships get developed and I think good chemistry between us can reflect on the screen as well.Dhinchyak Enterprise Marathi Movie Poster

The film stars Meenatai as Bhushan’s mother! She will be your mother-in-law in the film. How about that?

Ans: Isn’t it amusing? When Nishant came to narrate the script, he met my mother. So I think he had this idea of casting her as Bhushan’s mother that time only. Surprisingly he cast my mother as Bhushan’s mother and Ashwini Ekbote is playing my onscreen mother. Surprisingly, whenever I have worked with mom she didn’t play my mother. In Abhalamaya she didn’t play my mother. We both did one episode for Pratima Kulkarni way back in the 90s, there also Savita Prabhune played my mother and not her. She has played mother in so many characters; all her onscreen boys and girls are excited about working with her. However, nobody seems to cast her as my mother.

Working with her is always a pleasant experience. When we both are working in the same project we are two completely different individual professionals. Even at home she doesn’t mother me too much. Similarly, she will treat me likeany other co actor on the sets.

Manava, you have also directed a movie, so while working as an actress, do you pay attention in the direction department?

Ans:. As an actor I have always believed that director is the captain of the ship. Sonali kulkarni told me stayed with me as an actor when you feel something, you express it on the sets immediately. There is no point in regretting afterwards. I always try to follow this and while doing a scene if I feel about it, I say it to the director.  It is always good to voice yourself, which I always do. But it is very important to put away your personal beliefs and follow the director’s instructions blindly. It is very important for an actor to go by director’s view because he has an overall perspective of the product where we actors might be thinking from our point of view only.  So I think should be open communication, at the same time respecting director’s view. When I was shooting for Dhinchak post production for Por Bazaar was going on simultaneously. So, I would share my experiences or problems with the director and then it helped us to get things better while shooting.

Where do you find yourself more comfortable as an actress or as a director?

Ans: Being a film maker is always pressure-oriented work. The levels of stress and chaos are very high and hence it becomes more of a hard work. When you are in front of camera, you have to concentrate on looking good and performing well. However, I love both these jobs. After directing I feel that now I just need to work in a nice movie, and get relaxed. Then, I feel like I am ready for my next adventure as a director.  So it is a vicious circle for me, but I enjoy it immensely.

So, you are ready for your next direction? Future projects?

Yes, currently we are working on Script. The screenplay will be ready by end of the month. The film will go on floors by the end of the year.

Will you be acting in it?

No, the cast is yet to be decided, but I will not star in it for sure. I am acting in other films. Shoot is almost over for Girish Kulkarni’s Jau Dya Na Balasaheb. I am also currently rehearsing for a play as well, can’t say much about it before official announcement.

You have done serials, Theatre and films. How is the journey so far?

Ans: I have always looked at my profession as something I like to do rather than a job. Since it always been love-oriented and passionate I have always enjoyed every moment of it. I prefer projects which I really wanted to do. I never did anything because I just had to do it to pay my EMI. Money and fame are of course there, but for me job satisfaction is what matters at the end of the day. Overall it has been a great happy journey. Obviously with ups and downs, but it is still very much enjoyable. After all these working years, I realize that be it, success or failure you should be able to handle it. There are moments of high success and high failures but these are just passing moments. How you handle these moments define you as a person. On either sides of these there depression and over-happiness, but your personality can be shaken. So it is very important to be rooted and loving your work.

It is said that Marathi film industry in changing radically. What do you think about these changes?

Ans: I think, in Marathi cinema we are creating a bubble for ourselves. We are talking about being golden age of Marathi cinema, awards, acclaims and recognitions, but what is happening in reality? More than two Marathi films are releasing every week- but what about the audience? There are five fantastic films every year, but there are more than fifty no so good films. Some of the films are getting good promotions, but many films are unattended and hence I fear that this bubble might burst. In the end, getting subsidy and making a film just for the sake of it can be a killing story for all of us. We should be able to make our films more content-oriented than making them market-oriented.

Everybody is looking at Marathi cinema with a different eye which also increases our responsibility of the industry to give good products.

Out budgets are increasing and production values are getting fine. Do you think we are ignoring the content of the film?

Ans: For making a good film, everybody’s intention should to sell the good content. We are trying right from the writers to actors to technicians to give a good content only. My point is if we are getting better technical team to make the film, unfortunately we have only Maharashtra state watching the film. So even if I hike my budget five times and decide to pay best cameraman more and increasing everything to a grand level, but problem lies with the fact that in Maharashtra there are only x number of people and out of them only y number of people will come to watch the film so my revenue is not building. We bring brilliant content with excellent technician but we need audience.

How are we going to increase the number of audience other than Marathi speakers?

Ans: I have two perspectives for this. If you look at south Indian film industry, everybody watches their own films. They do not even allow dubbed movies. In Maharashtra out of ten hardly two people are watching Marathi cinema. We should make more and more people towards theatre to watch the film. The films should reach in Marathi speaking pockets globally. Second part is Marathi cinema should be so good, that it should be viewed by various language speakers as well. That is why we should focus on reaching out and creating the curiosity for the film. But only promotions will not help. Our agenda should be to make good films; if we concentrate on just selling the films then we might die as an industry.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Ans: I don’t have goal based conditions and ambitions. I am more interested in being happy and enjoying every phase of my life. I just wish to have good work and good life. I do not want to keep running in a rat race, but desire for moments making me enjoy the happiness of my life.

Tell us about your Fitness Mantra.

Ans: I don’t really follow any fitness mantra. I tend to eat less in the night, and prefer having heavy breakfast. My bedroom in on the third floor, and hall is on first floor, so going up and down on staircases becomes my workout regime.

What you like to do when you are free?

I love to travel. I make it an attempt to travel to one foreign country for the past six-seven years not just a pleasure trip, but understanding the culture by visiting museums, artiste villages. I do some free workshops for not so priviledged people and screening films for people in my locality. I also like to cook. I am a non-vegetarian so I like to prepare typical Marathi style Chicken and fish rassa.

Manava, it was really nice speaking with you. We wish you every success for Dhinchak and other future project. Talented artistes like you always make us proud in our Marathi cinema.

Bhushan Pradhan is one of the most loved faces of Marathi entertainment industry. His role as “Veer” in TV serial Pinjara and Anish in the the film Coffee aani barach kahi has made him a popular name. Recently Bhushan did a thriller Time Bara Vait which was loved by the audience and critics praised his work. Bhushan is ready with his next release “Dhinchak Enterprise” The film is directed by Nishant Sapkale and has already created lots of anticipation.

Marathistars.com spoke with Bhushan about this film and his journey as an actor.

Tell us about the film Dhinchak Enterprise. How was the experience?

Ans: From the day one when the script came to me what I liked about was the professionalism of this team. Director Nishanta and producer Charmi, both were clear about what they are going to do. After listening to the title of the film I was curious what this film all about is. Earlier I thought this is a comedy film, so I was a bit skeptical even before reading the script. After reading the script I just loved the concept. We had lively discussion on the script level. They also took our suggestions into consideration and some were implemented, as an actor this gives you a boost to your performance.

My role in Dhinchyak is something which I have never done before. This is a journey of a boy from his college days to his working experience as a salesman and how he becomes an entrepreneur. How he changes throughout this journey. He is a very hardworking at the same time he is smart working. What happens next, how he changes during this journey is all Dhinchyak is all about. My character has many shades, as I play urban Marathi youth from his college days to a successful businessman. I have portrayed these years through my looks, body language.

You himself have completed your MBA in advertising and marketing. Did it help you while doing this character?

Ans: Yes, definitely! I could relate to this character. I started working very early age. I have worked as a door-to-door salesman. So, I have experienced people slamming door to my face. All such experiences made me portray this character. Even, when the charecer completes his education and starts working, I can use that post MBA attitude. I all those exp helped me. Post MBA attitude, when my character turns a businessman phase, I could strongly relate to it.Dhinchyak Enterprise Marathi Movie

You and Manva have been paired together for the first time. How was the experience?

Ans: I knew Manva. Though we never worked together, we did some acting workshops together. We were acquaintances, but not very good friends. But once I get to know that Manva has been cast for this role, I felt better. During this shoot, I got to know her so much, we became good friends. We discussed about many things while shooting. This ease shows on the screen, the friendship off screen converts in chemistry on screen especially during intense scenes.

I was a bit doubtful whether people will accept us as a romantic couple. However, now the trailer is out and everybody is telling us that our pair looks good on screen. That really feels good.

Manva is also a director..

Ans: Definitely this was an added advantage. Though she has directed a movie, she never interfered in other departments while working as an actress. Yes, the team discussed with her and she gave her inputs. Also, she was ready to listen to suggestions given to her; She never threw that attitude of “I am the director, I know better than you”. That was such a relief.

Interestingly, Meena Naik, real life mother of Manva is playing your mother in this film.

Ans: Oh yes, it was interesting that she is Manva’s mother in real life, but on screen she has played my mother. I had earlier worked with Meenatai in my TV serial Char Chaughi, so I was more comfortable with her. It was a superb experience for me to work with this mother and daughter though Manva has very few scenes with Meenatai.

Q: Time Bara Vait,. Coffee aani barach kaahi you seem to be exploring various genres as an actor.

Ans: Honestly, that’s what I am aiming for. There are always misconceptions about good looking hero should only do romantic films. I prefer playing diverse characters. Time bara wait was a challenging role for me with action sequences. The film was a thriller suspense, audience has never seen me in such avatar. Similarly coffee aani barch kahi it was such an amazing and lovely character. He was so simple witty yet completely in control of himself. Dhinbchyak is again something different It is an executive corporate-savvy and ambitious character. I am truly glad that I am getting such different roles. Hope this continues.

Q: Your image in TV has been a simple sweet boy next door, films are changing this image. How is this journey coming up?

Ans:  It has been fantastic. I have done five TV shows. I received an overwhelming response. My Aryan character in Kunku had negative shades, and people actually started disliking me. Then I did Veer in Pinjra, so people accepting me from a negative role to positive is a challenge for me. I could relate to the character of Veer. So it was very easy to portray these characters. However, I am an actor and I want to challenge myself. I cannot choose a comfort zone and keep doing same thing. Audience will get bored after some time if I keep doing same roles.Bhushan Pradhan Marathi Actor

What is your current focus: TV or films?

Ans: While working on Pinjara, I started doing films, so I realized that it becomes very difficult to manage the work between these two mediums, especially when you are a lead actor. As no matter how carefully you have planned the schedules, there are always some uncontrollable situations making everything unorganized. The kind of growth films are providing me is enormous so I am focused on films. But then, I am always ready to do something special in TV as long as it is time bound. Whatever recognition I have got is through TV first. I learned the technique of acting in front of camera in small screen.

Q: Trend in Marathi serials they keep on dragging for many years.

Concept of seasons should be introduced. Slowly and steadily it will be acceptable by people, it won’t happen overnight. At the same time we take audience for too much granted that they won’t like this. For example, Zindagi channel showed Pakistani serials, and they were liked immensely by our audience. We loved the simplicity and honesty in those programs. Some channels have started this trend slowly. They have started realizing that people can like this and accept this. We often say that our show has wonderful storyline and it won’t be dragged unnecessarily for the sake for TRPs. or it will finish at a certain point. However, as actors we do not have control over the creative team. However we can’t quit shows so easily, I think it is our duty the serial which has given us immense popularity remain faithful to it. I know I am not liking this but I can’t leave my job and decide to take this fame with me. I have to do it conviction. Marathi TV industry was always ahead of its time. We have given such creatively brilliant and path-breaking shows few years back, and will continue to do so. Nowadays we are borrowing from Hindi serials so rater than that we need better shows with good concepts.

Q: Marathi movies are changing. We are slowly marketing our movies very aggressively.

Ans: It definitely feels great. I have seen this growth and been a part of it. I have been in this industry for 6-7 years. My first film Parambi to Dhinchyak I have seen this vast and good difference. Better movies are being made and then responsibility of audience is increasing. We don’t get screens easily. Every week minimum three films are releasing in Marathi. So reaching competition is so tough, plus we have a direct challenge with Hindi movies. No other regional film industry has this problem. But slowly we are realizing our audience. Now Hindi producers are interested I making Marathi films. This is the right time to be a part of this industry.

Success of our audience lies in the fact they always accept films with strong content. Films like Killaa , Court are open to have good entertainment and also rich with thoughtful content. This is the superpower of Marathi films.

Q: How do you spend your free time?

Ans: I like to travel; unfortunately nowadays travelling has been turned into promotional tours and shoots. I am a work-out freak. Even if I would not have been an actor, I would still be taking care of my body in such way.. I have been working out for almost 13 years though it was not very serious. last few years I have become very regular about it. Even on shoot, I see to it that I get at least an hour to work out. I do not follow any special diet. I do have very good metabolism so I don’t have to follow a very strict diet. I eat healthy I eat at time, right proportions.

What will be your future projects?

Ans: My next film One Two Three Four will be releasing very soon. It is a very interesting film. Also, I am doing a film with Trishala Shah called Jeet. Another two are in the floors, one is with Prarthana Behere, and second is with Sanskruti Balgude.

Bhushan, thanks a lot for speaking with us. We wish best luck to you and your team for Dhinchyak Enterprises.
