Zhala Bobhata Marathi Movie Review :

Written by the ‘Chala Hawa Yeu Dya’ fame writer Arvind Jagtap ‘Zhalla Bobhata’ has a genuinely funny tale to narrate. Though it shares a few similarities with another Dilip Prabhawalkar film of recent times, ‘Murder Mystery’, it’s primary humor elements are different.

Marathi cinema has a long history of typical social comedies based in the rural setting. In recent times too there have been lots of films that aspire to explore this style. Most of these movies are technical disasters & are filled with loud background scores, double meaning dialogues & absolutely no sense of cinematic vision. In case of ‘Zhalla Bobhata’ it’s definitely not a technical disaster. Yes the background score is equally irritating & loud, but the editing, cinematography & continuity is surprisingly decent. Maybe it’s Dilip Prabhawalkar’s credibility that reflects here. The first half is filled with certain humorous scenes that are supposed to make you laugh no matter how hard you try to pretend.

The problem as always is with the second half. A story of a good for nothing village has been rounded off quite abruptly with a dosage of social awareness. Dilip Prabhawalkar’s Appa is an elderly man who is visibly a madcap but is sort of the only responsible citizen of this village. He executes a childish plan to make the whole village realize the importance of hard work & other ‘ideal’ aspects for a community.

Among other actors the longest screen time is bagged by Kamlesh Sawant as the Sarpanch of this village. Kamlesh Sawant has been playing the same role since ages & so he is impressive in it. There is a romantic track inspired heavily by ‘Sairat’ that has been woven with the conflict of this film. One song that reminds us of the ‘Sairat’ soundtrack actually is shot beautifully & it’s worth watching in a theatre. Mayuresh Pem is a talented young actor who gets an interesting opportunity in this film. Among others Sanjay Khapre is genuinely funny in the first half but is criminally underused in the second.

The problem with such average budget Marathi films is that they think every aspect should reflect their budget. Even after that the film isn’t visually appealing in any way. Zhalla Bobhata is a film you would most probably watch on TV & have a nice laugh. There are certain elements that can be called ‘double meaning’. But maybe we should stop calling them ‘cheap’ & makers of such film should actually be a little bolder to not just make them ‘double-meaning’ but rather more ‘erotic’.

We mean yes if you’re enticing the audience why don’t you just go ahead & actually give us some below the belt humor. Because well made ‘below the belt’ humor can really be more meaningful than just enticing the audiences with it.

Dilip Prabhawalkar is used as a vehicle both for the plot & the actual film. He hasn’t got much to do in his role but whatever he does he does it the best way it can. Bhau Kadam has an aura of sorts now, so he has been used assuming that the audiences will burst into laughter hjust by watching him onscreen. Sadly nothing of that happens but Bhau still has it’s moments in the film.

The film is considerable predominantly because of Arvind Jagtap’s writing. That encompasses a remark on the concept of adultery & how our priorities as a community are so stupidly wrong. ‘Kon Ahe Re Tikde’ was his best work till date which was a madcap political, social satire. This film wishes to be a satire but gives away at crucial points. It’s funny nevertheless.

Overall:

If you enjoy typical rural humor of our Marathi films or maybe you’re in a mood for some mindless fun, ‘Zhalla Bobhata’ might just suit you.

After a blockbuster film like Sairat, it was pretty clear that we will have similar themes and songs in the upcoming films. After watching “Painjan” from Zala Bobhata, the same thought will cross your mind.

The song is an ultimate romantic number shot in the rural Maharashtra with some real but eye-catchy locations. The song is shot in Mayuresh Pem and Monalisa Bagal. The colorful costumes, the rural scenery and extensive use of slo-motion remind us Sairat songs. The song is composed by AV Prafullchandra and he has sung this song. The tune of the song has a folk music background. However, the lyrics by Mangesh Kangane and the tune fail to capture attention of the audience.  The singer has mispronounced many Marathi words.

Mayuresh looks like a “mad in love” teenager, however, Monalisa Bagal keeps smiling in each and every frame. She has very cute looks, but that fake smile and constant head nod easily put us off. The film is directed by Anup Jagdale.

National award winning senior actor Dilip Prabhavalkar has been entertaining us for over 3 decades now! He has played varied roles in all kinds of films. But a comedy has always been his strongest point. ‘Zhalla Bobhata’ appears one such sharp social comedy.

Though overall the trailer appears slapstick, beneath it hints that this film deals with something important. The film is written by the ‘Chala Hava Yeu Dya’ fame writer Arvind Jagtap. ‘Kon Ahe Re Tikde’ was a sharp comedy previously written by Jagtap. So we are predicting ‘Zhalla Bobhata’ to be the surprise hit essential for Marathi cinema.

Alongside Dilip Prabhavalkar the film stars Bhau Kadam, Sanjay Khapre, Kamlesh Sawant, Teja Devkar, Mayuresh Pem & Monalisa Bagal. At the end of the trailer we see Kamlesh Sawant’s character waiting desperately for Dilip Prabhavalkar to reveal someone’s name! Whose name is it? & what’s it got to do with the plot of the film? Such questions arise in our mind which is great sign for a satirical comedy.

Director Anup Ashok Jagdale has an interesting backstory of being a touring talkies owner. His life’s story inspired a Hindi film titled ‘Road, Movie’ which starred Abhay Deol in Anup’s character. So this transition from a touring talkies owner to a film director is definitely admirable!

Review:

Marathi Tigers is a film based on the Belgaum issue. It has Dr. Amol Kolhe in the lead and also has stalwarts like Ashish Vidyarthi, Vikram Gokhale, Vidyadhar Joshi and Vikas Patil.

Amol Kolhe - Marathi Tigers PosterBelgaum lies in Karnataka, but the marathi speaking population of the district cry discrimination and want Belgaum to become a part of Maharashtra. It is a very sensitive issue that has caused a huge uproar in Karnataka. The film tries to exploit this issue under the garb of preaching the message of unity in diversity. And therein lies one of the biggest issues with Marathi Tigers. Its approach is rather confusing. On one hand you are preaching unity in diversity but on the other you back the Marathi population with their demand to be included in Maharashtra. The title itself takes clear sides.

In the film, we have Lingappa (Ashish VIdyarthi), a powerful politician, who takes down a board in a village called Yellur that claims the village to be a part of Maharashtra. Anna (Gokhale) is a local leader and Shiva is his protégé. Anna has also raised Rachappa like his own son. Shiva is a leader who fights for the Marathis in the town. Lingappa’s right hand man Chana’s daughter Seema (Kiran Sharad) falls for Shiva, but Rachappa has feelings for Seema.

There you have a run of the mill, done to death love story. Marathi Tigers tries to tackle the important political issue under the garb on this love story. It not only does injustice to the political topic in hand, but the love story too is very unimaginative and drab. It lacks any kind of originality.

Another major issue I had with the film are the provocative intentions. Right from the posters itself it is clear that the film is taking sides and trying to exploit the sensitive issue for its own good. The film’s release has been severely opposed in Karnataka and other border regions.

Overall:

Provocative and unimaginative love story pretending to tackle a sensitive and relevant political issue.

The soldiers who are stationed at 9000 feet above sea level lead a very tensed and rough life. Yet, their sense of duty and patriotism in unparallel. The challenge for organizers was to get everybody at this station, as geographical conditions of this terrain are very tough. The fourteen hour journey was especially very difficult for the performers.
