In recent times we have seen quite a few Marathi films which have used adult humour as a primary mode of entertainment. However none of them have really made any deeper intrusion beyond the surface level stereotypes in this genre. Will ‘Atpadi Nights‘ break this norm? Only time will tell!

But for now the trailer of the film seems slightly better than many other films that have come become of similar kind. The lead paring of Pranav Raorane and Sayali Sanjeev is unusual yet surprisingly exciting. The film seems to have authentic backdrop of the the rural setting.

Films that came before of this kind many a times had a forceful moral message at the end of the film, almost abruptly attached to not be blamed by any moral policing members of the society. However in ‘Aatpadi Nights’ through the trailer the social context seems genuine and not forced. The taboo about men’s sexual problems could be talked about more fluently if this film succeeds to reach more audiences!

Quick Viewpoint: Certain films avoid being ‘certain’ in many ways. Welcome Home’s uncertainty is it’s biggest strength. It’s like a breeze of fresh air but air that has a conscience of it’s own.

What Works? 

• The singular most important aspect one needs to address here is how essential good actors are in this film. As usual though in a Bhave-Sukthankar film! These filmmakers use their actors so organically that the whole set up of the film never feels like a set up, it just feels like an actually existing world. Mrunal Kulkarni under Bhave-Sukthankar feels completely at ease, it’s like we always knew there was this intense (at the same time subtle) actor waiting to explode out of her! It won’t be exaggeration to call this her career defining performance!
  
• Story telling in films usually manipulates the time factor. Sometimes certain films do not skip or jump time as normally most of the films do. They linger over it, they let you go through the suffocated routine of the time passing. Smallest of things are amplified to their actual size in life. It’s like being trapped with those characters in a very specific time frame of their life. All of this results into a very lively experience of human existence & ‘Welcome Home’ does exactly that!
• ‘Welcome Home’ gets deeper into our upper middle class society’s skin. It tries to experiment and find what if so & so happens & our people are made to instantaneously react to it! What if an independent middle aged woman suddenly decides to leave her husband’s house & come back to her previous home (or her parent’s home). The results of this experiment are not really demotivating! While going through this the film stumbles upon it’s main subject of research which is the idea of home! And how does a modern day independent woman explores it.
• Usually ‘coming of age’ is a genre trait that can be spotted in films mainly with teenage protagonists. But here Mrunal Kulkarni’s character comes off age in a very organic and gradual process! And again the time factor let’s us actually understand the process better & how & exactly what triggered the process! One of the main triggers is a charm of character played by Sumeet Raghavan!
• As said earlier uncertainty is Welcome Home’s biggest strength, by uncertainty I do not mean in terms of the narrative and what would happen next in their life, but in terms of what exactly do we interpret from the proceedings. And it’s something that viewers need to experience on their own in a theatre! 

What Fails?

• Spruha Joshi though has given a much smoother performance when compared to her recent filmography but the only flaw of the film rests on her little track in the film. Her presence within the ‘home’ is quite essential in the film, but the point film wished to make through the rest of her track doesn’t quite gel in the scheme of things and doesn’t feel essential to the film. Moreover the track had a really irritating song.

Final Verdict: In the rich & diverse filmography of filmmakers Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukthankar, ‘Welcome Home’ is a welcome entry! Like in most of their films they have again explored our societal patterns through the case study of family dynamics in a well educated, cultured upper middle class!

While we would love to see Subodh Bhave doing Rahul Gandhi biopic, most probably all this was just said in fun. But one can never rule out the possibility as Subodh Bhave’s name is forever associated with the ‘Biopic’ genre!

Lot was riding on Marathi cinema’s Diwali release Ani..Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar & the film came out with flying colors! The Subodh Bhave starrer has made this Diwali more special for the audiences. The word of mouth for the film both on social media & in the real world is extremely positives. ‘Ekdam Kadaak..’ has become a new slogan now!

The audiences have specifically loved Subodh Bhave’s & Vaidehi Parshurami’s performance in the film. The young actress was sharing the screen with stalwarts like Subodh Bhave, Sonali Kulkarni & others & she has impressed one & all. And Vaidehi is being called the next big thing in Marathi cinema.

While no office box office numbers have been revealed yet, but one can easily understand that the film is a huge success just by seeing the number of shows that are being increased after the opening day! Quick Viewpoint: While the film doesn’t quite match the expectations it still delivers as a honest account of a flawed protagonist.

What Works?

• Every actor casted in the film has delivered effectively from Sonali Kulkarni, Prasad Oak, Nandita Dhuri, Sumeet Raghavan & others. While Subodh Bhave continues his usual perfection of getting into the skin of the character & catching the right emotional tone of the character. Young actress Vaidehi Parshurami too stands out for her subtle brilliance in a challenging role.
• The dialogues! Again something that had tonnes of expectations from the audiences! Especially that dialogues that involve the theatrical backdrop.
• The entire graph of Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar’s life is very well covered in the film, at times the periodic jumps may seem abrupt but overall they feel exhaustive & the makers have managed to cover many aspects of his eventful life.
• For the audiences who have watched Dr. Ghanekar in action & have been a witness to that period this film will surely make them nostalgic, & for the younger audiences the film will introduce them to a world that once existed in our world & how it still has importance in our culture!

What Fails?

• The superficial depiction of certain scenes that were supposed to show the darker side of Dr. Ghanekar. They are so subtle (in a negative way) that many audiences won’t even get the real purpose of those scenes, & what they were meant to interpret.
• We are not really rooting for the protagonist. There isn’t real emotional connect to put us by the side of the protagonist. We are distant from the film emotionally.
• At many instances the production design of the film feels fake, & it affects the impact of the overall scene.
• Above the dialogues are mentioned in the ‘positive’ section yet sometimes they feel forceful, especially when every character put their one-liner definition of what Dr. Ghanekar is like, they feel to be forcefully added in the scheme of things & had no real context to the scenes.

Final Verdict: ‘Ani..Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar’ is a film that doesn’t really have any major flaws yet the positives of the film aren’t that impactful. The film entertains & serves the purpose of documenting the life of a flawed superstar but it lacks the magic that it promised in it’s teasers & trailers.
