Quick Viewpoint: Sanjay Jadhav’s ‘Khari Biscuit’ has it’s flaws if looked objectively without being emotionally attached. But the problem is, it is really hard to detach ourselves emotionally even while judging the film! If a film manages to do that to you, I consider it a really good film irrespective of the flaws!

What Works? 

• First & foremost the credit to the film’s effectiveness should go to the three writers who have worked on the film; Sanket Mane, Sachin Mote & Chetan Saudane. On all three fronts of story, screenplay & dialogues ‘Khari Biscuit’ is built with a singular objective of relating the audience on an emotional level. They primarily succeed when we are by the side of the protagonist (the brother ‘biscuit’) quite quickly when the film starts. And then throughout we look at the obstacles coming in the way of our protagonist in a very sensitive way.
• The performances of the two lead kids are wonderful. While the little girl Vedashree Khadilkar pours sweetness into many little moments in the film, her elder brother played by Adarsh Kadam is throughout brilliant. His earnestness and sincerity in every scene that he features in is eye catching!
• Along with the emotional connect through the children’s story the film connects to us emotionally on another important front! Cricket is a religion in our country and for the longest time Sachin Tendulkar has been it’s god! This film understands that & uses that to it’s benefit beautifully! If you have ever been that cricket fan who sits in one position throughout the game as some superstition towards India winning or Sachin scoring, ‘Khari Biscuit’ is a tribute to you and your kind!
• Many films are made in order to romanticize the message of ‘hope’. It’s a very common trait of film messaging from the beginning of time! I think new films made today about ‘hope’ don’t get any by default credit for choosing it as the film’s major inspirational strategy, but when those films actually make you ‘feel’ hopeful that is when you have to give the due credit to them! And ‘Khari Biscuit’ made me feel ‘hopeful’!
• There’s a dialogue in the film where the elderly, motherly figure played by Nandita Patkar makes the protagonist realize that why ‘lies’ are important in a poor man’s life. And how ‘lies’ make their reality liveable. That moment to me puts into perspective the entire film and also makes feeling ‘hopeful’ more logical and meaningful!

What Fails?

• The film will ask for suspension of disbelief from the audiences and those who can’t manage it won’t be diving deep emotionally in the film. And if there’s no emotional connection for a viewer the entire film will loose all of it’s charm on him/her.
• While the film is shot decently enough in actual real locations in Mumbai, the stress is not on making the reality hit hard. To some extent if the film made the audiences realize about the harsher obstacles kids living on their own on the streets face, the emotional grip of the film on us would have only been tighter!
• By the end of the film there’s a track where the protagonist and his friends gets involved into something that is morally, ethically questionable. However the treatment given to this is pretty casual and superficial. Again there was scope to make it more harsher and hence more emotionally effective!

Final Verdict: Sanjay Jadhav is a director who has always reinvented himself at regular intervals. ‘Khari Biscuit’ is the first film in his newest reinvention of himself! And in my opinion he has managed to bring together his stylistic (commercially) way of cinema along with the cinema that appeals to us on a human level for it’s emotional truth!

The trailer of the film though makes the film feel a little uneven but it surely seems to have a heart! A heart that can easily connect to an audience. Only time will tell if the screenplay of the film compliments this heart and makes the film a thoroughly entertaining affair! The child artists in the film feel talented and well directed.

His versatility though is not just restricted to venturing into different aspects of the industry but the versatility is also visible in his highly unique filmography as a director! The teaser of his new film ‘Khari Biscuit‘ is out and again Sanjay Jadhav has reinvented himself!

The film feels like a slice of life film based in the world of little children who are living life in a unfavorable scenario. Yet they seem to find happiness! The teaser introduces the lead character of the film ‘Khari’ and how she looks at her world with purely pleasant perspective, even when she isn’t gifted with eyes!

Sanjay Jadhav started his career with dark thriller films like ‘Ringa Ringa’ & ‘Checkmate’. Later with the success of ‘Duniyadari’ he moved on to make a couple of romantic dramas, that were a hit and miss at the box office. But Sanjay Jadhav still surprised one and all when he chose to make a film like ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ which was a heist comedy! He followed that up with another ambitious comedy ‘Luckee’!

While ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ became a huge hit, Luckee’s gamble didn’t pay off for Jadhav! But yet he is back with a brand new film in the same year on a completely brand new subject!

Ye Re Ye Re Paisa worked for quite a few audiences with it’s over the top humour and over stylistic choices from director Sanjay Jadhav. Now the teaser of it’s sequel is out & it’s directed by a different director! Hemant Dhome’s approach as a director might be different from Sanjay Jadhav’s but from the teaser it seems like the tone of the film is similar. Sanjay Narvekar, Anand Ingle & Vishakha Subhedar are repeating the same characters from the prequel.

But instead of Siddharth Jadhav, Tejaswini Pandit, Umesh Kamat we now have Aniket Vishwasrao, Mrinmayee Godbole & Priyadarshan Jadhav! These new characters certainly seem exciting. Moreover director Hemant Dhome’s fascination with London continues! His first directorial film ‘Baghtos Kay Mujra Kar’ was set in London in the second half, his recently announced ‘Jhimma‘ too is being shot in London and now Ye Re Ye Re Paisa 2 too is set in London!

The overall chaotic atmosphere seems to be doubled here from the prequel and the new cast is also used to doing high pitch over the top comedies! Hence there would be expectations from the film for sure! Let’s wait for the trailer to know more about the film! Because ‘Abhi toh Party Shuru hui hai’!

Viewpoint: Sanjay Jadhav again reinvented himself with ‘Ye Re Ye Re Paisa’ around one year ago, & he is absolutely exploiting the craft of cinema in every way! He carry forwards the same style here in ‘Luckee’. I mean again the cinematographer is over doing his cinematography, the background composer is overdoing the background score, the editor is completely going nuts with the pace of the film, the writer is overwriting, & the actors too are over acting! Everyone is doing their work with steroid injected over excitement, except the audiences! Who are bored & clueless.

What Works? 

• Probably the songs, but then one doesn’t need to visit the theatre for it! A Wifi connection or a data pack will do.

What Fails? 

• The plot of the film is mindlessly silly, though it still could have worked with a better screenplay as it had today’s sensibilities. The trailer of the film might suggest us it’s an adult comedy. But not really! It is more of an underdog story where the film tries to captivate on the drawbacks of it’s protagonist. But the film fails to create any connect between the audience & the protagonist (even after the in your face first person narration).
• One of film’s biggest failure is that it has the most uninteresting supporting characters who are given tremendous importance in the story as they drive our protagonist to do things. None of them make any connect again. Plus they all are cardboard cut out stereotypes.
• The film is basically about the moral conflict between love & lust. Which is really a good topic to base a film on, but in the attempt of making every thing entertaining it takes it’s hero on a foolishly exaggerated journey making him appear like a horny teenager who can do anything to get laid! The journey turns into a misadventure for him for outlandishly foolish reasons. The majority of the film is all about this misadventure making us wonder will the film ever get over it & start with the actual film!
• The editing of the film especially before the misadventures begin is frustratingly fast paced. The amount of information that is compressed into the film shot by shot never really gets the chance to be presented in a sober (non-steroid injected) way that can create some kind of communication from the film towards the audiences. This is another reason why the audiences are disconnected with the film from the very beginning.
• Over ambitiously the film keeps an open ending where nothing really resolves, (even if the conflict was resolved it wouldn’t have saved the film) & that would make some audiences feel cheated. One could also say that it has multiple endings. Though none of the endings have the impact to undo the mess the film has already been throughout the run time.

Final Verdict: When simply looked as a story, Lucky truly had the potential to be a terrific entertainer with lots of social commentary, but overall the film is a chaotic mess because of it’s stylistic choices. Sanjay Jadhav again proves that he has potential but again he throws everything away with his obsession to overdo everything.

Maharashtra Celebrity Cricket League is this year being played at Thane’s newly renovated Dadaji Konddev Stadium! And more importantly, the whole event will be live streamed on MarathiStars.com’s Facebook page! The tournament will be played over the period of three days; 1st, 2nd & 3rd February! The event is created by Thane Municipal Corporation & director Viju Mane, Akash Pendharkar & Swapnil Juvatkar.

There are six teams in the Maharashtra Celebrity Cricket League (MCCL); ‘Mumbaiche Mavale’ led by director-actor Sanjay Jadhav, ‘Banedar Thane’ led by Superstar Ankush Chaudhari, ‘Kokanche Wagh’ led by the super energetic Siddharth Jadhav, ‘Khatarnak Mulshi’ led by the iconic Pravin Tarde, ‘Parakrami Pune’ led by the chocolate boy hero Saurabh Gokhale & ‘Ladhvayye Media’ led by Bavesh Janavlekar (Head of Zee Talkies & Zee Yuva).
