Rama-Madhav, the landmark Marathi period drama is all set to release on November 30th in Hoyts Xtrem theatre in Auckland city, New Zealand. Rama-Madhav is the first Marathi film which has got the honour of being released in New Zealand.

The audience got the opportunity to experience the golden era of Peshwai through Rama-Madhav which was presented by Producer Bhupat Bodar’s Shivam-Jemin Enterprise Pvt.Ltd. and directed by Mrinal Kulkarni. Rama-Madhav has won the hearts of the audience from Maharashtra as well as audience from the Western countries like England and America.
In the film, Nanasaheb Peshwa and Gopikabai are portrayed by Ravindra Mankani and Mrinal Kulkarni. The role of cunning Raghobadada is played by Prasad Oak and the role of intelligent and beautiful Anandibai is played by Sonali Kulkarni. The newcomer duo Alok Rajwade and Parna Pethe are playing the leading pair in the film. Dr.Amol Kolhe has essayed the role of Sadashivrao bhau and Shruti Marathe has portrayed the role of Parvati bai.
The makers of the film are confident that the audience in New Zealand will love Rama Madhav which is based on unique and everlasting love story of Madhavrao Peshwa and his wife Ramabai.

Story Outline :

A bubbly and naughty Rama (Shruti Kalselar and later Parna Pethe) hailing from a middle-class background is married to Madhavrao Peshwa (Alok Rajwade), the prince of the royal Peshwa dynasty, during her childhood. As the two grow up, the political scenario lands the couple in some serious challenges that also affect their personal life. Madhavrao’s evil and scheming uncle Raghunathrao (Prasad Oak) makes things worse.

Review :

The mention of the word ‘Peshwa’ instantly brings to our mind the glory of the Maratha Empire and the fearless battles of honor the Peshwas fought and won with style. But amidst such acts of bravery and fearlessness, the era also saw an episode of pure selfless love that is successfully portrayed in Mrinal Kulkarni’s Rama Madhav.

The film takes the viewer back to the bygone era very successfully through some convincing set and costume designing (Poornima Oak) and finely sketched characters. But, obviously, the bigger reason why the film works is the honest approach while presenting a lesser known story.

This happens due to two reasons. Firstly, to see the spirit of the Peshwas in terms of the administration of the state and bravery in wars is sheer delight! Secondly, the love track between Rama and Madhav is smartly interwoven in between various political issues. The writers have also made sure the proceedings don’t become depressing even during tragic situations.

The only big problem here is the length of 147 minutes. There are times in the second half when the narrative loses the grip it had provided earlier. It is also unlikely for people of today’s era to accept the regressive-ness of that era, especially during the starting moments.

Rajiv Jain’s excellent camerawork adds more delight. You just can’t fail to notice the artistic touch in almost every frame, mostly during the scenes inside Shanwar Wada. Anand Modak, who passed away earlier this year, composed tunes are melodious and they go well with the genre. The Ganpati aarti song, ‘Loot Liyo’ and ‘Swapnihi Navhte Disle’ stand out.

Such a film needs to score high in performances and that is exactly what is provided by the actors. Parna Pethe is thoroughly convincing as the elder Rama. Shruti Kalsekar, as the younger one, is super cute. She displays great acting skills too. Alok Rajwade, as Madhavrao, shines with a thoroughly dedicated act.

Prasad Oak gets into the skin of the antagonist Raghunathrao with ease. Mrinal Kulkarni displays her utmost mature skills while playing Gopikabai. Ravindra Mankani and Dr. Amol Kolhe make sure they perfectly suit Nanasaheb and Sadashivrao. Sonalee Kulkarni and Shruti Marathe provide decent support as Anandibai and Parvatibai.

Overall:

Rama Madhav is an honest effort that deserves to be seen. The film needs rapid word-of-mouth to have a big impact at the box office.

The music launch of Rama Madhav was done by Vijay Kondke recently in a function. Lyricist Vaibhav Joshi and Music director Narendra Bhide recalled memories and experiments of late lyricist Sudheer Moghe and music director Anand Modak during the press meet of the function.

Rama Madhav has total five songs. This was the last movie where famous lyricist-music director duo Sudheer Moghe and Anand Modak worked together. Also, the film had additional songs by lyricist Vaibhav Joshi and Music director Narendra Bhide.

Sharayu Date and Aarya Ambekar has sung a children’s song “Hamama re Pora” a popular phrase from Sant Dnyaneshwar and used in a children’s song beautifully. Zunook Zunook is a song on the theme of Mangala gauri and uses traditional Maharashtrian rhythms. This song is sung by Medha Paranjape, Keerti Pathak, Manjiri Joshi, Durva Bagwe. Aditi Rao Hyderi Rao will be seen a Mujra based song “LutLiyo Mohe Shyam saware” The love song “Swapneehee Navhate Disale” has been sung by RishikeshRanade and Priyanka Barve. Also the music features a traditional Ganpati Aarti by Shankar Mahadevan.

The presenter for the music launch function was Dr.Nilesh Sable. The music has been distributed by Video Palace. The cast includes Alok Rajwade, Parna Pethe, Ravindra Mankani, Mrinal Kulkarni, Prasad Oak, Amol Kolhe, Suchitra Bandekar, Sonalee Kulkarni, Shruti Marathe and Shruti Karlekar. While speaking about this role Prasad said, “I had never done any historical role in my twenty year career. I always wished to perform such role. When my dear friend Mrunal approached for this role, I was thankful for her. This was a completely different experience for me. My first co-actor in television was Mrunal and now she has directed me. Raghobadada has various shades as short-tempered, loving husband, plotter and yet very brave. Portraying all these shades on one role was amazing, I hope audience will like me as Raghobharari.

Anandibai, wife of Raghobadada was known for her beauty and her intellect. Sonalee Kulkarni will be enacting this challenging role. She was not interested in court proceeding till the death of Madhavrao Peshwa. However, post his death, Anandibai becomes a prominent person in the politics. While speaking about her role, Sonali said, “I was really happy to be a part of historical Rama Madhav love story. This role has some negative shades and hence it was really unexpected for me. For the first time I worked under a female director and the experience was enthralling.”

Bollywood’s ace choreographer Saroj Khan has roped in Aditi Rao Hydari to do a special song for Mrinal Kulkarni’s Marathi period film “Rama Madhav”.

Saroj Khan had earlier choreographed Aditi in one of her southern films and the latter felt that the actress is a perfect choice for the song keeping in mind her “classic beauty” and her training in “classical dance”, said a statement.

Set in the 17th century, based on the love story of legendary warrior of Maratha empire Peshwa Madhavrao and his wife Ramabai, the film has historic, old world appeal.

“The characters, their clothes, etc are all exactly like it was in the 17th century. Given this, Aditi’s special song showcases her in a beautiful classic lehanga-choli with exquisite gold jewellery, right from the maang teeka to the round nose rings,” said a source.

“Keeping the look in mind and the fact that she needed a beautifully trained classical dancer, Sarojji immediately requested Aditi to do the song and the actress was happy to do it. Her classic beauty coupled with the fact that she’s a trained classical dancer, all the pieces just fit in beautifully,” the source added.

Saroj Khan is known for bringing out the best in some of the dancing divas of Bollywood including Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit.
