Story Outline :

If we put life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje’s life into perspective we would realize that there have been ups & down in his life from childhood. He lost his mother at the age of 2 but he grew up under the influence of his grandmother Jijau. At the age of 9 his battle for Swarajya started when he met Mirza Raje. At the age of 10 little Sambhaji shocked King Aurangzeb at his palace in Agra. After escaping from Agra Sambhaji Raje traveled from Mathura to Rajgad on his own.

But then Shambhuraje became the prince & post Rajaram’s birth family disputes begin to rise within the empire. Corrupt stewards in the empire pushed Queen Soyrabai towards her motherhood. Shambhuraje’s life became full with accusations & insults. Post the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj both Swarajya & Shambhuraje lost their father! In the midst of these family disputes outsiders like the British, Portuguese, Siddhi’s, Adilshah; all of them became empire’s fierce enemies. Moreover Aurangzeb attacked Swarajya with his powerful army. The whole empire was worried for its existence & was clueless about how would Sambhaji Raje face all this!

What happens after this will be shown in a grand way in ‘Swarajya Rakshak Sambhaji’! Will Shambhuraje dave his empire or will he be betrayed by his own country men?

Viewpoint: Rinku Rajguru’s third outing in Marathi cinema, ‘Makeup’ turns out be problematic in terms of her performance but overall the film succeeds because it defies stereotypes and avoids usual sentimental melodrama! The two halves of the film though distinctly different in terms of plot and tone, they compliment each other well and give us a strangely unique mainstream entertainer!

What Works? 

• Ganesh Pandit has been an established writer in Marathi cinema for around a decade now, this film is his directorial debut & the film reflects his unique sense of comedy in many ways. One of the most effective ways is the way in which he uses certain details in objects or props to extract humour. Throughout the first half which is primarily a comedy he uses certain objects, elements in almost every scene to convey few underlying themes of that particular scene or about the characters. Whether it’s a mobile phone, simple entrance doors, an audio device that constantly chants “Shree Swami Samarth”, or a sizzler dish ordered in a restaurant! Not many filmmakers in Marathi use such elements creatively.
• ‘Makeup’ succeeds in protecting the film by not revealing too much in the promos, trailers. Many films don’t understand the risk of giving away too much. Here because of the protection we are pleasantly surprised with the turns the plot takes.
• The film defies the norm that we need a conventional hero, conventional heroine coming together conventionally in a romantic dramedy! The two of the main characters are put through strange circumstances and are made to go through things we all face in our lives.
• The strangeness of the second half is such that many a times we as audiences are conflicted on whether to laugh or to feel bad! While this could be frustrating for some lot of the audiences to me it was exciting! Seldomly our films put us in such conflicted two minds, I enjoyed it!
• The film silently stands for all the right things related to feminism in today’s times. But more so it also looks at family in a new way, one that could be easily relatable to today’s youth.
• The music of the film is really good. Especially because these days it has become rare in Marathi cinema. Though there’s one song which is a remake of a popular Hindi song.
• Chinmay Udgirkar who’s in the male lead along with the rest of the supporting cast except Rinku have given consistent performances.

What Fails? 

• Rinku’s performance falters majorly in all the humorous moments designed around her character. However she is completely effective in other moments. This inconsistency could have been worked upon. It reinstates the fact that ‘comedy’ is the most difficult part of acting, and you can’t be good in it by default.
• The dialogues of the film (especially in the 1^st half) most of the times are too cheesy. It might be deliberately done but it isn’t effective enough.
• It’s clearly evident that the film is directed by a first time director. This film under a more finessed director could have been even more effective! But nevertheless we can expect Pandit’s next film to be better directed!

Final Verdict: ‘Makeup’ is a film about which we can’t really be general in terms of whether all kinds of audiences would be able to enjoy it or not. But certainly if an audience is open minded enough to consume content that defies their expectations and presents a confusing but lifelike tale of love, romance & relationships, ‘Makeup’ can work for them!

Zee Marathi’s ‘Swarajya Rakshak Sambhaji’ serial has in no time gathered lots of love & appreciation from the audiences. Every character from Sambhaji Maharaj to others like Yesubai are making a connection with the audiences. Yesubai is played by actress Prajakta Gaikwad. Prajakta was trained in horse riding & sword fighting before the shooting of the serial commenced.

Prajakta feels it was a huge responsibility on her part to showcase the art of horse riding & sword fighting in it’s the purest way just as Yesubai would have showcased it! The horses used for the shooting of this serial are trained animals. They are only aware of a fixed race track while running. But in the shoot of Swarajya Rakshak Sambhaji, the horses were made run on an open ground & hence they didn’t stop running even if the shot is completed!

Prajakta too had to ride one such horse just didn’t stop & then the whole unit came together in stopping the horse from running rounds of the open ground! Prajakta says she was even hurt quite a few times during the filming of her sword fighting sequences. But once she gives a perfect shot all the hard work pays off, says Prajakta!

Family Katta Marathi Movie Review :

Long back Maharashtra’s greatest playwright Vijay Tendulkar wrote an unusually simplistic play, “Madhlya Bhinti”. Simplistic because it was nothing like his other works. There were hardly any metaphors or something offensively violent for which he was known. Even in the sense of realism the play didn’t have much to offer. Though what it offered was a voice to the usual awkward silences. These silences can creep into any random middle class (& upper middle) family. People living in the same house hardly speak their hearts out. But a play is the correct medium for this outlet. Technically a film might not be the suitable medium for such an outburst. Family Katta is a remake of ‘Celebration” (a Marathi play by the same team) & it’s a welcome exception. The characters speak their heart out without sounding loud or animated. No they are not bombarding melodramatic monologues or glorifying the traditional concept of a big happy family. Instead their outburst appears completely genuine & non-theatrical.

So in Family Katta the whole family isn’t living together & doesn’t even consider doing so at any point, which is appreciable & path-breaking to much extent. Vandana Gupte & Dilip Prabhawalkar play the elderly couple (Mr. & Mrs. Sabnis) who are the central characters of this film. Their three sons (Kiran Karmarkar, Sanjay Khapre & Sachin Deshpande) are living in different cities & their grand kids (Alok Rajwade & Gauri Nalawade) too are well-settled in their respective careers. The fourth child, Manju (Sai Tamhankar) is somewhat disconnected from the family as she ran away with her lover during her college days. Manju is particularly a father’s daughter & her father was the hero of her life. This additional info has a unique context in the film& works pretty well. Manju has been forgiven by her mother but not by her father.

Alike last year’s Rajwade & Sons, Family Katta too uses the third generation as an ideal model for the generation that went wrong, the middle one (the four children). Though it’s pretty much debatable that no matter what it’s always the middle generation that’ll take all the beating (that’s what Rajwade & Sons stressed on & Family Katta didn’t). Sadly none of the two films ever propagated that this whole process is a cycle & will keep repeating itself till the end of time.

However Family Katta stresses on more simplistic topics & succeeds in propagating them efficiently. The first half focuses on the little treasures of human life. Those we all have an easy access to yet we all take them for granted. Even our quarrels are most of the times on so little issues. The first half is filled with many such minute moments & its positivity reaches the audiences. The second half has a potential satirical tone to it but it wasn’t explored much. It might be a conscious decision by the makers to not go that way. But the path they chose still help them in reaching the desired destination.

After Dusri Goshta it’s good to see Chandrakant Kulkarni getting over his political hangover. We now expect many such genres to be explored by him on the silver screen. Vandana Gupte has given her most smashing performance on the big screen. If she was exceptional in Double Seat & Maatichya Chuli, here she is unmatchable! Dilip Prabhawalkar as usual gives a refreshing performance & doesn’t remind us of any of his previous roles. Among the rest of the cast the two animated daughter-in-laws (Pratiksha Lonkar & Sulekha Talwalkar) have the most obvious cliché characters, yet they generate humour. Pratiksha Lonkar doesn’t really have a history of playing such characters before& it becomes quite evident but Sulekha Talwalkar is smooth in her antics!

Family Katta can be straight forwardly slotted into the A-list category of Marathi films but somewhere we feel what if the film was a little more ambitious towards defining the meaning of life in its own way through the humans it had in it, just a little more?

Overall:

Family Katta is the need of this hour, predominantly because we (Indian film viewers) deserve the right family film which is not bounded by age old ideas of how an Indian family lives happily ever after. Yet what it propagates is that even with our differences & personal spaces we should still manage to be connected to each other & react sensitively towards each other as for the long time the big differences become irrelevant & what stays are those little treasures!

Murli Narlappa’s debut production venture ‘Tujhya Vin Mar Jaavan‘ is up for release and we spoke to the soft spoken Marathi film producer director about his new film.

How did your journey begin?

For five years my TV show ‘Raja Aur Rancho’ was popular on Doordarshan and subsequently I did many serials for DD1 and when I got this script of Tujhyavin Mar Jaavan, I immediately thought of making a Marathi film along with my co- director friend Ashok Karlekar..

How did you cast for the film?

Since it’s a teen love story and a college story, we wanted fresh faces and Prarthana Behere was finalized initially but for the hero’s role , we undertook many auditions but couldn’t find one. But one day
I was sitting for my song recording at a studio when this young boy Vikas Patil walked in and I immediately asked him to come to my office and I finalized him for the hero’s role.

What is the story of the film?

It’s about a Maharashtrian family and a Punjabi family who are at loggerheads with each other due to a misunderstanding but the son and daughter of the respective families fall in love with each other and
how their love story culminates into marriage inspite of opposition is the theme of the film.

What is the other cast like?

We have Hemangi Rao, Pratiksha Lonkar, Atul Parchure, etc.

What is the music like of the film?

The music by Avdhoot Gupte is peppy and melodious and is the USP of the film.

What is the budget of the film?

Approximately two crores.
